²⁴ When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel^(A) of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife.

²¹ Was not our father Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar?^{(A) 22} You see that his faith and his actions were working together,^(B) and his faith was made complete by what he did.^{(C) 23} And the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,”^[a](D) and he was called God’s friend.^{(E) 24} You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone.

²⁵ In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction?^{(F) 26} As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.^(G)

¹⁴ You are my friends^(A) if you do what I command.^(B)

⁷ By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen,^(A) in holy fear built an ark^(B) to save his family.^(C) By his faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that is in keeping with faith.^(D)

⁸ By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance,^(E) obeyed and went,^(F) even though he did not know where he was going.

⁵ His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”^(A)

⁶ Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing,^(B) each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.^[a]

⁷ Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.

⁸ Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”

They did so,

³² They washed whenever they entered the tent of meeting or approached the altar,^(A) as the Lord commanded^(B) Moses.

²⁷ and burned fragrant incense on it, as the Lord commanded^(A) him.

²⁵ and set up the lamps^(A) before the Lord, as the Lord commanded^(B) him.

¹⁹ Then he spread the tent over the tabernacle and put the covering^(A) over the tent, as the Lord commanded^(B) him.
