²⁴ When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife,

^21 (A)Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up his son Isaac on the altar? ²² You see that ^(B)faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed ^(C)by his works; ²³ and the Scripture was fulfilled that says, ^(D)“Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”—and he was called a ^(E)friend of God. ²⁴ You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone. ²⁵ And in the same way was not also ^(F)Rahab the prostitute justified by works ^(G)when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way? ²⁶ For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead.

¹⁴ You are ^(A)my friends ^(B)if you do what I command you.

²⁴ By faith Moses, when he was grown up, ^(A)refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, ^25 (B)choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy ^(C)the fleeting pleasures of sin. ^26 (D)He considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking to ^(E)the reward. ²⁷ By faith he ^(F)left Egypt, ^(G)not being afraid of the anger of the king, for he endured ^(H)as seeing him who is invisible. ²⁸ By faith ^(I)he kept the Passover and sprinkled the blood, so that the Destroyer of the firstborn might not touch them.

²⁹ By faith ^(J)the people crossed the Red Sea as on dry land, but the Egyptians, when they attempted to do the same, were drowned. ³⁰ By faith ^(K)the walls of Jericho fell down after they had been encircled for seven days. ³¹ By faith ^(L)Rahab the prostitute did not perish with those who were disobedient, because she ^(M)had given a friendly welcome to the spies.

⁷ By faith ^(A)Noah, being warned by God concerning ^(B)events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household. By this he condemned the world and became an heir of ^(C)the righteousness that comes by faith.

⁸ By faith ^(D)Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place ^(E)that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going.

⁵ His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

⁶ Now there were six stone water jars there ^(A)for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty ^(B)gallons.^{[a] 7} Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. ⁸ And he said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.” So they took it.

¹¹ But Naaman was angry and went away, saying, “Behold, I thought that he would surely come out to me and stand and call upon the name of the Lord his God, and wave his hand over the place and cure the leper. ¹² Are not Abana^[a] and Pharpar, the rivers of ^(A)Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? Could I not wash in them and be clean?” So he turned and went away in a rage. ¹³ But his servants came near and said to him, ^(B)“My father, it is a great word the prophet has spoken to you; will you not do it? Has he actually said to you, ‘Wash, and be clean’?” ¹⁴ So he went down and dipped himself seven times in the Jordan, according to the word of the man of God, ^(C)and his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child, ^(D)and he was clean.

³² When they went into the tent of meeting, and when they approached the altar, they washed, as the Lord commanded Moses.

²⁷ and burned fragrant incense on it, as the Lord had commanded Moses.
