17 (A)Now on the first day of [a](B)Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus and [b]asked, “Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover?” 18 And He said, “Go into the city to (C)a certain man, and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, “(D)My time is near; I am keeping the Passover at your house with My disciples.”’” 19 The disciples did as Jesus had directed them; and they prepared the Passover.

The Last Passover

20 (E)Now when evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the [c]twelve. 21 And as they were eating, He said, (F)Truly I say to you that one of you will betray Me.” 22 Being deeply grieved, they began saying to Him, each one: “Surely it is not I, Lord?” 23 And He answered, (G)He who dipped his hand with Me in the bowl is the one who will betray Me. 24 The Son of Man is going away (H)just as it is written about Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! (I)It would have been good [d]for that man if he had not been born.” 25 And (J)Judas, who was betraying Him, said, “Surely it is not I, (K)Rabbi?” Jesus *said to him, (L)You have said it yourself.”

The Lord’s Supper Instituted

26 (M)Now while they were eating, Jesus took some bread, and [e](N)after a blessing, He broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.” 27 And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; 28 for (O)this is My blood of the covenant, which is being poured out for (P)many for forgiveness of sins. 29 But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it with you, new, in My Father’s kingdom.”

30 (Q)And after singing a [f]hymn, they went out to (R)the Mount of Olives.

31 Then Jesus *said to them, “You will all [g](S)fall away because of Me this night, for it is written: ‘(T)I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be (U)scattered.’ 32 But after I have been raised, (V)I will go ahead of you to Galilee.” 33 But Peter replied to Him, “Even if they all [h]fall away because of You, I will never fall away!” 34 Jesus said to him, (W)Truly I say to you that (X)this very night, before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” 35 Peter *said to Him, “(Y)Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You!” All the disciples said the same thing as well.

The Garden of Gethsemane

36 (Z)Then Jesus *came with them to a place called [i](AA)Gethsemane, and *told His disciples, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37 And He took (AB)Peter and the two sons of Zebedee with Him, and began to be grieved and distressed. 38 Then He *said to them, (AC)My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death; remain here and (AD)keep watch with Me.”

39 And He went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let (AE)this cup pass from Me; (AF)yet not as I will, but as You will.” 40 And He *came to the disciples and *found them sleeping, and He *said to Peter, “So, you men could not (AG)keep watch with Me for one hour? 41 (AH)Keep watching and praying, so that you do not come into temptation; (AI)the spirit is [j]willing, but the flesh is weak.”

42 He went away again a second time and prayed, saying, “My Father, if this cup (AJ)cannot pass away unless I drink from it, (AK)Your will be done.” 43 Again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. 44 And He left them again, and went away and prayed a third time, saying the same thing once more. 45 Then He *came to the disciples and *said to them, [k]Are you still sleeping and resting? Behold, (AL)the hour [l]is at hand and the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Get up, let’s go; behold, the one who is betraying Me is near!”

Jesus’ Betrayal and Arrest

47 (AM)And while He was still speaking, behold, (AN)Judas, one of the twelve, came [m]accompanied by a large crowd with swords and clubs, who came from the chief priests and elders of the people. 48 Now he who was betraying Him gave them a sign previously, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the one; arrest Him.” 49 And immediately Judas went up to Jesus and said, “Greetings, (AO)Rabbi!” and kissed Him. 50 But Jesus said to him, (AP)Friend, do what you have come for.” Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and arrested Him.

51 And behold, (AQ)one of those who were with Jesus [n]reached and drew his (AR)sword, and struck the (AS)slave of the high priest and [o]cut off his ear. 52 Then Jesus *said to him, “Put your sword back into its place; for (AT)all those who take up the sword will perish by the sword. 53 Or do you think that I cannot appeal to My Father, and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve [p](AU)legions of (AV)angels? 54 How then would (AW)the Scriptures be fulfilled, which say that it must happen this way?”

55 At that time Jesus said to the crowds, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me as you would against a man inciting a revolt? (AX)Every day I used to sit within the temple grounds teaching, and you did not arrest Me. 56 But all this has taken place so that (AY)the Scriptures of the prophets will be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples left Him and fled.

Jesus before Caiaphas

57 (AZ)Those who had arrested Jesus led Him away to (BA)Caiaphas, the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were gathered together. 58 But (BB)Peter was following Him at a distance, as far as the (BC)courtyard of the high priest, and he came inside and sat down with the [q](BD)officers to see the outcome.

59 Now the chief priests and the entire [r](BE)Council kept trying to obtain false testimony against Jesus, so that they might put Him to death. 60 They did not find any, even though many false witnesses came forward. But later on (BF)two came forward, 61 and said, “This man stated, ‘(BG)I am able to destroy the [s]temple of God and to rebuild it [t]in three days.’” 62 The high priest stood up and said to Him, “Do You offer no answer for what these men are testifying against You?” 63 But (BH)Jesus kept silent. (BI)And the high priest said to Him, “I (BJ)place You under oath by (BK)the living God, to tell us whether You are the [u]Christ, (BL)the Son of God.” 64 Jesus *said to him, (BM)You have said it yourself. But I tell you, from now on you will see (BN)the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of power, and (BO)coming on the clouds of heaven.”

65 Then the high priest (BP)tore his [v]robes and said, “He has blasphemed! What further need do we have of witnesses? See, you have now heard the blasphemy; 66 what do you think?” They answered, “(BQ)He deserves death!”

67 (BR)Then they (BS)spit in His face and beat Him with their fists; and others [w]slapped Him, 68 and said, “(BT)Prophesy to us, You [x]Christ; who is the one who hit You?”

Peter’s Denials

69 (BU)Now Peter was sitting outside in the (BV)courtyard, and a slave woman came to him and said, “You too were with Jesus the Galilean.” 70 But he denied it before them all, saying, “I do not know what you are talking about.” 71 When he had gone out to the gateway, another slave woman saw him and *said to those who were there, “This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.” 72 And again he denied it, with an oath: “I do not know the man.” 73 A little later the bystanders came up and said to Peter, “You really are one of them as well, (BW)since even the way you talk [y]gives you away.” 74 Then he began to curse and swear, “I do not know the man!” And immediately a rooster crowed. 75 And Peter remembered the statement that Jesus had [z]made: (BX)Before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.

The Last Supper(A)(B)(C)

17 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread,(D) the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Where do you want us to make preparations for you to eat the Passover?”(E)

18 He replied, “Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, ‘The Teacher says: My appointed time(F) is near. I am going to celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your house.’” 19 So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them and prepared the Passover.

20 When evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the Twelve. 21 And while they were eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me.”(G)

22 They were very sad and began to say to him one after the other, “Surely you don’t mean me, Lord?”

23 Jesus replied, “The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me.(H) 24 The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him.(I) But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”

25 Then Judas, the one who would betray him,(J) said, “Surely you don’t mean me, Rabbi?”(K)

Jesus answered, “You have said so.”

26 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it(L) and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.”

27 Then he took a cup,(M) and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. 28 This is my blood of the[a] covenant,(N) which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.(O) 29 I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you(P) in my Father’s kingdom.”

30 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.(Q)

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial(R)

31 Then Jesus told them, “This very night you will all fall away on account of me,(S) for it is written:

“‘I will strike the shepherd,
and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’[b](T)

32 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”(U)

33 Peter replied, “Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will.”

34 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.”(V)

35 But Peter declared, “Even if I have to die with you,(W) I will never disown you.” And all the other disciples said the same.

Gethsemane(X)

36 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee(Y) along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow(Z) to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”(AA)

39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup(AB) be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”(AC)

40 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me(AD) for one hour?” he asked Peter. 41 “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.(AE) The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

42 He went away a second time and prayed, “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.”(AF)

43 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. 44 So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing.

45 Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour(AG) has come, and the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”

Jesus Arrested(AH)

47 While he was still speaking, Judas,(AI) one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people. 48 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him.” 49 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Greetings, Rabbi!”(AJ) and kissed him.

50 Jesus replied, “Do what you came for, friend.”[c](AK)

Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him. 51 With that, one of Jesus’ companions reached for his sword,(AL) drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.(AM)

52 “Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword.(AN) 53 Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?(AO) 54 But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled(AP) that say it must happen in this way?”

55 In that hour Jesus said to the crowd, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I sat in the temple courts teaching,(AQ) and you did not arrest me. 56 But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled.”(AR) Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.

Jesus Before the Sanhedrin(AS)

57 Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas(AT) the high priest, where the teachers of the law and the elders had assembled. 58 But Peter followed him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest.(AU) He entered and sat down with the guards(AV) to see the outcome.

59 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin(AW) were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death. 60 But they did not find any, though many false witnesses(AX) came forward.

Finally two(AY) came forward 61 and declared, “This fellow said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’”(AZ)

62 Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” 63 But Jesus remained silent.(BA)

The high priest said to him, “I charge you under oath(BB) by the living God:(BC) Tell us if you are the Messiah,(BD) the Son of God.”(BE)

64 “You have said so,”(BF) Jesus replied. “But I say to all of you: From now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One(BG) and coming on the clouds of heaven.”[d](BH)

65 Then the high priest tore his clothes(BI) and said, “He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy. 66 What do you think?”

“He is worthy of death,”(BJ) they answered.

67 Then they spit in his face and struck him with their fists.(BK) Others slapped him 68 and said, “Prophesy to us, Messiah. Who hit you?”(BL)

Peter Disowns Jesus(BM)

69 Now Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came to him. “You also were with Jesus of Galilee,” she said.

70 But he denied it before them all. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said.

71 Then he went out to the gateway, where another servant girl saw him and said to the people there, “This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth.”

72 He denied it again, with an oath: “I don’t know the man!”

73 After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, “Surely you are one of them; your accent gives you away.”

74 Then he began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know the man!”

Immediately a rooster crowed. 75 Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: “Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.”(BN) And he went outside and wept bitterly.
