O sermão da montanha. As beatitudes(A)

5 Jesus, vendo a multidão, subiu a um monte, e, assentando-se, aproximaram-se dele os seus discípulos; 2 e, abrindo a boca, os ensinava, dizendo:

3 Bem-aventurados os pobres de espírito, porque deles é o Reino dos céus; 4 bem-aventurados os que choram, porque eles serão consolados; 5 bem-aventurados os mansos, porque eles herdarão a terra; 6 bem-aventurados os que têm fome e sede de justiça, porque eles serão fartos; 7 bem-aventurados os misericordiosos, porque eles alcançarão misericórdia; 8 bem-aventurados os limpos de coração, porque eles verão a Deus; 9 bem-aventurados os pacificadores, porque eles serão chamados filhos de Deus; 10 bem-aventurados os que sofrem perseguição por causa da justiça, porque deles é o Reino dos céus; 11 bem-aventurados sois vós quando vos injuriarem, e perseguirem, e, mentindo, disserem todo o mal contra vós, por minha causa. 12 Exultai e alegrai-vos, porque é grande o vosso galardão nos céus; porque assim perseguiram os profetas que foram antes de vós.

Os discípulos são o sal da terra e a luz do mundo

13 Vós sois o sal da terra; e, se o sal for insípido, com que se há de salgar? Para nada mais presta, senão para se lançar fora e ser pisado pelos homens.

14 Vós sois a luz do mundo; não se pode esconder uma cidade edificada sobre um monte; 15 nem se acende a candeia e se coloca debaixo do alqueire, mas, no velador, e dá luz a todos que estão na casa. 16 Assim resplandeça a vossa luz diante dos homens, para que vejam as vossas boas obras e glorifiquem o vosso Pai, que está nos céus.

O cumprimento da lei e dos profetas

17 Não cuideis que vim destruir a lei ou os profetas; não vim ab-rogar, mas cumprir. 18 Porque em verdade vos digo que, até que o céu e a terra passem, nem um jota ou um til se omitirá da lei sem que tudo seja cumprido. 19 Qualquer, pois, que violar um destes menores mandamentos e assim ensinar aos homens será chamado o menor no Reino dos céus; aquele, porém, que os cumprir e ensinar será chamado grande no Reino dos céus. 20 Porque vos digo que, se a vossa justiça não exceder a dos escribas e fariseus, de modo nenhum entrareis no Reino dos céus.

21 Ouvistes que foi dito aos antigos: Não matarás; mas qualquer que matar será réu de juízo. 22 Eu, porém, vos digo que qualquer que, sem motivo, se encolerizar contra seu irmão será réu de juízo, e qualquer que chamar a seu irmão de raca será réu do Sinédrio; e qualquer que lhe chamar de louco será réu do fogo do inferno. 23 Portanto, se trouxeres a tua oferta ao altar e aí te lembrares de que teu irmão tem alguma coisa contra ti, 24 deixa ali diante do altar a tua oferta, e vai reconciliar-te primeiro com teu irmão, e depois vem, e apresenta a tua oferta. 25 Concilia-te depressa com o teu adversário, enquanto estás no caminho com ele, para que não aconteça que o adversário te entregue ao juiz, e o juiz te entregue ao oficial, e te encerrem na prisão. 26 Em verdade te digo que, de maneira nenhuma, sairás dali, enquanto não pagares o último ceitil.

27 Ouvistes que foi dito aos antigos: Não cometerás adultério. 28 Eu porém, vos digo que qualquer que atentar numa mulher para a cobiçar já em seu coração cometeu adultério com ela. 29 Portanto, se o teu olho direito te escandalizar, arranca-o e atira-o para longe de ti, pois te é melhor que se perca um dos teus membros do que todo o teu corpo seja lançado no inferno. 30 E, se a tua mão direita te escandalizar, corta-a e atira-a para longe de ti, porque te é melhor que um dos teus membros se perca do que todo o teu corpo seja lançado no inferno. 31 Também foi dito: Qualquer que deixar sua mulher, que lhe dê carta de desquite. 32 Eu, porém, vos digo que qualquer que repudiar sua mulher, a não ser por causa de prostituição, faz que ela cometa adultério; e qualquer que casar com a repudiada comete adultério.

33 Outrossim, ouvistes que foi dito aos antigos: Não perjurarás, mas cumprirás teus juramentos ao Senhor. 34 Eu, porém, vos digo que, de maneira nenhuma, jureis nem pelo céu, porque é o trono de Deus, 35 nem pela terra, porque é o escabelo de seus pés, nem por Jerusalém, porque é a cidade do grande Rei, 36 nem jurarás pela tua cabeça, porque não podes tornar um cabelo branco ou preto. 37 Seja, porém, o vosso falar: Sim, sim; não, não, porque o que passa disso é de procedência maligna.

38 Ouvistes que foi dito: Olho por olho e dente por dente. 39 Eu, porém, vos digo que não resistais ao mal; mas, se qualquer te bater na face direita, oferece-lhe também a outra; 40 e ao que quiser pleitear contigo e tirar-te a vestimenta, larga-lhe também a capa; 41 e, se qualquer te obrigar a caminhar uma milha, vai com ele duas. 42 Dá a quem te pedir e não te desvies daquele que quiser que lhe emprestes.

43 Ouvistes que foi dito: Amarás o teu próximo e aborrecerás o teu inimigo. 44 Eu, porém, vos digo: Amai a vossos inimigos, bendizei os que vos maldizem, fazei bem aos que vos odeiam e orai pelos que vos maltratam e vos perseguem, 45 para que sejais filhos do Pai que está nos céus; porque faz que o seu sol se levante sobre maus e bons e a chuva desça sobre justos e injustos. 46 Pois, se amardes os que vos amam, que galardão tereis? Não fazem os publicanos também o mesmo? 47 E, se saudardes unicamente os vossos irmãos, que fazeis de mais? Não fazem os publicanos também assim? 48 Sede vós, pois, perfeitos, como é perfeito o vosso Pai, que está nos céus.

Jesus ensina a multidão

(Lc 6.20-23)

5 Quando Jesus viu a grande multidão, subiu para o alto de um monte e se sentou. Os seus discípulos se aproximaram 2 e ele começou a ensiná-los, dizendo:

3 —Felizes são os que reconhecem que precisam de Deus,
    pois é esse tipo de pessoa que fará parte do reino de Deus.
4 —Felizes são os que choram,
    pois Deus os consolará.
5 —Felizes são os humildes,
    pois eles herdarão a terra que Deus prometeu.[a]
6 —Felizes são os que têm fome e sede de justiça,
    pois Deus fará com que fiquem satisfeitos.
7 —Felizes são os que têm misericórdia dos outros,
    pois Deus terá misericórdia deles.
8 —Felizes são os que têm coração puro,
    pois verão a Deus.
9 —Felizes são os que promovem a paz,
    pois Deus os chamará de “filhos”.
10 —Felizes são aqueles que são perseguidos por fazerem a vontade de Deus,
    pois a eles pertence o reino de Deus.

11 —Felizes serão vocês quando forem insultados, perseguidos e receberem todo tipo de calúnias pelo fato de me seguirem. 12 Alegrem-se e fiquem realmente muito felizes, pois grande é a recompensa que receberão no céu. Foi desta mesma maneira que os profetas que viveram antes de vocês também foram perseguidos.

O sal e a luz

(Mc 9.50; 4.21; Lc 14.34-35; 8.16)

13 —Vocês são o sal da terra! Se o sal, porém, perder o seu sabor, não poderá voltar a ser salgado e não presta para mais nada. Só serve para ser jogado fora e pisado pelos que passam.

14 —Vocês são a luz do mundo! Uma cidade situada no alto de uma montanha não pode ser escondida. 15 Da mesma forma, ninguém acende um lampião para colocá-lo debaixo de uma bacia, mas sim para colocá-lo em cima de uma mesa, para que possa iluminar a todos os que estão na casa. 16 Que a luz de vocês brilhe diante das pessoas de tal forma que, ao verem o bom comportamento de vocês, elas deem glória ao Pai que está no céu.

Jesus ensina a respeito da lei

17 —Não pensem que eu vim para acabar com a lei de Moisés ou com o ensino dos profetas. Não vim acabar com eles, e sim dar o verdadeiro significado deles. 18 Digo a verdade a vocês: Enquanto o céu e a terra durarem, nem uma letra ou mesmo um único acento desaparecerá da lei até que todas as coisas aconteçam. 19 Portanto, quem desobedecer ao menor dos mandamentos e ensinar outras pessoas a fazerem o mesmo, será considerado o menor no reino de Deus. Por outro lado, quem obedecer aos mandamentos e ensiná-los a outras pessoas será considerado o maior no reino de Deus. 20 Digo a verdade a vocês: A não ser que superem os professores da lei e os fariseus em fazer o que Deus quer, jamais entrarão no reino de Deus.

Jesus ensina sobre o relacionamento entre as pessoas

21 —Vocês ouviram que aos nossos antepassados foi dito isto: “Não mate”(A) e “Quem matar alguém será levado a julgamento”. 22 Mas eu lhes digo: Qualquer um que ficar com raiva de uma outra pessoa será julgado. Qualquer que insultar uma outra pessoa será levado ao Conselho Superior. Quem chamar uma outra pessoa de “tolo” merece ser jogado no fogo do inferno.

23 —Portanto, se você for até o altar para dar a sua oferta e se lembrar ali de que alguém tem alguma coisa contra você, 24 deixe a sua oferta lá mesmo, diante do altar. Primeiro vá e faça as pazes com aquela pessoa; depois volte e dê a sua oferta.

25 —Entre em acordo sem demora com o seu adversário, enquanto você estiver a caminho com ele. Caso contrário, ele o entregará ao juiz, o juiz o entregará aos guardas e você será colocado na prisão. 26 Digo a verdade a você: Só sairá de lá após pagar tudo o que deve.

Jesus ensina sobre o adultério

27 —Vocês ouviram o que foi dito: “Não cometa adultério”.(B) 28 Eu, porém, lhes digo que todo aquele que olhar para uma mulher desejando possuí-la, já cometeu adultério em seu coração. 29 Portanto, se o seu olho direito faz com que você peque, arranque-o e jogue-o fora, pois é melhor que uma parte do seu corpo seja destruída do que todo o seu corpo ser jogado no inferno. 30 Da mesma forma, se a sua mão direita faz com que você peque, corte-a e jogue-a fora, pois é melhor que uma parte do seu corpo seja destruída do que todo o seu corpo ir para o inferno.

Jesus ensina sobre o divórcio

(Mt 19.9; Mc 10.11-12; Lc 16.18)

31 —E também foi dito: “Se alguém se separar de sua esposa deve dar-lhe uma certidão de divórcio”.(C) 32 Eu, porém, lhes digo que qualquer um que se divorciar de sua esposa sem que ela seja culpada de imoralidade sexual, estará fazendo com que ela cometa adultério. E quem se casar com ela também estará cometendo adultério.

Jesus ensina sobre os juramentos

33 —Vocês também ouviram o que foi dito aos nossos antepassados: “Não quebre um juramento, mas cumpra o que você jurou ao Senhor que ia fazer”.[b] 34 Eu, porém, lhes digo: Não jurem por nada. Não jurem pelo céu, pois é o trono de Deus; 35 nem pela terra, pois é onde Deus coloca os seus pés; nem por Jerusalém, pois é a cidade do grande Rei. 36 Não jurem nem por suas próprias cabeças, pois vocês não são capazes de fazer com que um só fio de cabelo se torne branco ou preto. 37 Se vocês quiserem dizer “sim”, digam somente “sim”; se vocês quiserem dizer “não”, digam somente “não”. O que passar disso vem do maligno.

Jesus ensina sobre a vingança

(Lc 6.29-30)

38 —Vocês também ouviram o seguinte: “Olho por olho e dente por dente”.(D) 39 Eu, porém, lhes digo: Não se oponha aos perversos. Mas, ao contrário, se alguém lhe bater na face direita, vire-lhe também a esquerda. 40 Se alguém quiser processar você a fim de tomar a sua capa, deixe que leve também a sua túnica. 41 Se alguém lhe obrigar a carregar uma carga por um quilômetro[c], leve-a por dois quilômetros. 42 Dê a quem lhe pedir alguma coisa e não vire as costas a quem lhe pedir emprestado.

Jesus ensina sobre o amor

(Lc 6.27-28,32-36)

43 —Vocês também ouviram que foi dito: “Ame o seu próximo(E) e odeie os seus inimigos”. 44 Eu, porém, lhes digo: Amem os seus inimigos e orem por aqueles que perseguem vocês. 45 Dessa forma o Pai de vocês que está no céu os considerará seus filhos. Ele faz com que o sol brilhe tanto para os bons como para os maus. Ele também manda a chuva tanto para os justos como para os injustos. 46 Se vocês amarem somente as pessoas que amam vocês, o que é que vocês ganham? Até mesmo os cobradores de impostos fazem isto! 47 E se cumprimentarem somente os vizinhos que são seus amigos, o que fazem de mais? Até mesmo os que não creem em Deus fazem isso. 48 Portanto, sejam perfeitos assim como o Pai de vocês, que está nos céus, também é perfeito.

34 But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne:

37 But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.

46 For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?

47 And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so?

Believers Are Salt and Light(R)

13 “You are the salt of the earth; (S)but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.

14 (T)“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do they (U)light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, (V)that they may see your good works and (W)glorify your Father in heaven.

Christ Fulfills the Law

17 (X)“Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. 18 For assuredly, I say to you, (Y)till heaven and earth pass away, one [b]jot or one [c]tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled. 19 (Z)Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds (AA)the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.

Murder Begins in the Heart(AB)

21 “You have heard that it was said to those [d]of old, (AC)‘You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’ 22 But I say to you that (AD)whoever is angry with his brother [e]without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. And whoever says to his brother, (AE)‘Raca!’[f] shall be in danger of the council. But whoever says, [g]‘You fool!’ shall be in danger of [h]hell fire. 23 Therefore (AF)if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 (AG)leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. 25 (AH)Agree with your adversary quickly, (AI)while you are on the way with him, lest your adversary deliver you to the judge, the judge hand you over to the officer, and you be thrown into prison. 26 Assuredly, I say to you, you will by no means get out of there till you have paid the last penny.

Adultery in the Heart

27 “You have heard that it was said [i]to those of old, (AJ)‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that whoever (AK)looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 (AL)If your right eye causes you to [j]sin, (AM)pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to [k]sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.

Marriage Is Sacred and Binding(AN)

31 “Furthermore it has been said, (AO)‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’ 32 But I say to you that (AP)whoever divorces his wife for any reason except [l]sexual immorality causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a woman who is divorced commits adultery.

Jesus Forbids Oaths

33 “Again you have heard that (AQ)it was said to those of [m]old, (AR)‘You shall not swear falsely, but (AS)shall perform your oaths to the Lord.’ 34 But I say to you, (AT)do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is (AU)God’s throne; 35 nor by the earth, for it is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of (AV)the great King. 36 Nor shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black. 37 (AW)But let [n]your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ For whatever is more than these is from the evil one.

Go the Second Mile(AX)

38 “You have heard that it was said, (AY)‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ 39 (AZ)But I tell you not to resist an evil person. (BA)But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. 40 If anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let him have your cloak also. 41 And whoever (BB)compels you to go one mile, go with him two. 42 Give to him who asks you, and (BC)from him who wants to borrow from you do not turn away.

Love Your Enemies(BD)

43 “You have heard that it was said, (BE)‘You shall love your neighbor (BF)and hate your enemy.’ 44 [o]But I say to you, (BG)love your enemies, bless those who curse you, (BH)do good to those who hate you, and pray (BI)for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, 45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for (BJ)He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 (BK)For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet your [p]brethren only, what do you do more than others? Do not even the [q]tax collectors do so? 48 (BL)Therefore you shall be perfect, just (BM)as your Father in heaven is perfect.

Introduction to the Sermon on the Mount

5 Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, 2 and he began to teach them.

The Beatitudes(A)

He said:

3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit,
    for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.(B)
4 Blessed are those who mourn,
    for they will be comforted.(C)
5 Blessed are the meek,
    for they will inherit the earth.(D)
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
    for they will be filled.(E)
7 Blessed are the merciful,
    for they will be shown mercy.(F)
8 Blessed are the pure in heart,(G)
    for they will see God.(H)
9 Blessed are the peacemakers,(I)
    for they will be called children of God.(J)
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,(K)
    for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.(L)

11 “Blessed are you when people insult you,(M) persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.(N) 12 Rejoice and be glad,(O) because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.(P)

Salt and Light

13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.(Q)

14 “You are the light of the world.(R) A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.(S) 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others,(T) that they may see your good deeds(U) and glorify(V) your Father in heaven.

The Fulfillment of the Law

17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.(W) 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.(X) 19 Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands(Y) and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.(Z)

Murder(AA)

21 “You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder,[a](AB) and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ 22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry(AC) with a brother or sister[b][c] will be subject to judgment.(AD) Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’[d] is answerable to the court.(AE) And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.(AF)

23 “Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, 24 leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.

25 “Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still together on the way, or your adversary may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. 26 Truly I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.

Adultery

27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’[e](AG) 28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.(AH) 29 If your right eye causes you to stumble,(AI) gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to stumble,(AJ) cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.

Divorce

31 “It has been said, ‘Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.’[f](AK) 32 But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, makes her the victim of adultery, and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.(AL)

Oaths

33 “Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not break your oath,(AM) but fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made.’(AN) 34 But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all:(AO) either by heaven, for it is God’s throne;(AP) 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King.(AQ) 36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. 37 All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’;(AR) anything beyond this comes from the evil one.[g](AS)

Eye for Eye

38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’[h](AT) 39 But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.(AU) 40 And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. 41 If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. 42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.(AV)

Love for Enemies

43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor[i](AW) and hate your enemy.’(AX) 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,(AY) 45 that you may be children(AZ) of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.(BA) 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get?(BB) Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47 And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.(BC)
