El Sermón del monte
5 Cierto día, al ver que las multitudes se reunían, Jesús subió a la ladera de la montaña y se sentó. Sus discípulos se juntaron a su alrededor, 2 y él comenzó a enseñarles.
Las bienaventuranzas
3 «Dios bendice a los que son pobres en espíritu y se dan cuenta de la necesidad que tienen de él,
porque el reino del cielo les pertenece.
4 Dios bendice a los que lloran,
porque serán consolados.
5 Dios bendice a los que son humildes,
porque heredarán toda la tierra.
6 Dios bendice a los que tienen hambre y sed de justicia,
porque serán saciados.
7 Dios bendice a los compasivos,
porque serán tratados con compasión.
8 Dios bendice a los que tienen corazón puro,
porque ellos verán a Dios.
9 Dios bendice a los que procuran la paz,
porque serán llamados hijos de Dios.
10 Dios bendice a los que son perseguidos por hacer lo correcto,
porque el reino del cielo les pertenece.
11 »Dios los bendice a ustedes cuando la gente les hace burla y los persigue y miente acerca de ustedes y dice toda clase de cosas malas en su contra porque son mis seguidores. 12 ¡Alégrense! ¡Estén contentos, porque les espera una gran recompensa en el cielo! Y recuerden que a los antiguos profetas los persiguieron de la misma manera.
Enseñanza acerca de la sal y de la luz
13 »Ustedes son la sal de la tierra. Pero ¿para qué sirve la sal si ha perdido su sabor? ¿Pueden lograr que vuelva a ser salada? La descartarán y la pisotearán como algo que no tiene ningún valor.
14 »Ustedes son la luz del mundo, como una ciudad en lo alto de una colina que no puede esconderse. 15 Nadie enciende una lámpara y luego la pone debajo de una canasta. En cambio, la coloca en un lugar alto donde ilumina a todos los que están en la casa. 16 De la misma manera, dejen que sus buenas acciones brillen a la vista de todos, para que todos alaben a su Padre celestial.
Enseñanza acerca de la ley
17 »No malinterpreten la razón por la cual he venido. No vine para abolir la ley de Moisés o los escritos de los profetas. Al contrario, vine para cumplir sus propósitos. 18 Les digo la verdad, hasta que desaparezcan el cielo y la tierra, no desaparecerá ni el más mínimo detalle de la ley de Dios hasta que su propósito se cumpla. 19 Entonces, si no hacen caso al más insignificante mandamiento y les enseñan a los demás a hacer lo mismo, serán llamados los más insignificantes en el reino del cielo; pero el que obedece las leyes de Dios y las enseña será llamado grande en el reino del cielo.
20 »Les advierto: a menos que su justicia supere a la de los maestros de la ley religiosa y a la de los fariseos, nunca entrarán en el reino del cielo.
Enseñanza acerca del enojo
21 »Han oído que a nuestros antepasados se les dijo: “No asesines. Si cometes asesinato quedarás sujeto a juicio”[a] . 22 Pero yo digo: aun si te enojas con alguien,[b] ¡quedarás sujeto a juicio! Si llamas a alguien idiota,[c] corres peligro de que te lleven ante el tribunal; y si maldices a alguien,[d] corres peligro de caer en los fuegos del infierno.[e]
23 »Por lo tanto, si presentas una ofrenda en el altar del templo y de pronto recuerdas que alguien tiene algo contra ti, 24 deja la ofrenda allí en el altar. Anda y reconcíliate con esa persona. Luego ven y presenta tu ofrenda a Dios.
25 »Cuando vayas camino al juicio con tu adversario, resuelvan rápidamente las diferencias. De no ser así, el que te acusa podría entregarte al juez, quien te entregará a un oficial y te meterán en la cárcel. 26 Si eso sucede, te aseguro que no te pondrán en libertad hasta que hayas pagado el último centavo.[f]
Enseñanza acerca del adulterio
27 »Han oído el mandamiento que dice: “No cometas adulterio”[g] . 28 Pero yo digo que el que mira con pasión sexual a una mujer ya ha cometido adulterio con ella en el corazón. 29 Por lo tanto, si tu ojo—incluso tu ojo bueno[h]—te hace caer en pasiones sexuales, sácatelo y tíralo. Es preferible que pierdas una parte de tu cuerpo y no que todo tu cuerpo sea arrojado al infierno. 30 Y si tu mano—incluso tu mano más fuerte[i]—te hace pecar, córtala y tírala. Es preferible que pierdas una parte del cuerpo y no que todo tu cuerpo sea arrojado al infierno.
Enseñanza acerca del divorcio
31 »Han oído la ley que dice: “Un hombre puede divorciarse de su esposa con solo darle por escrito un aviso de divorcio”[j] . 32 Pero yo digo que un hombre que se divorcia de su esposa, a menos que ella le haya sido infiel, hace que ella cometa adulterio; y el que se casa con una mujer divorciada también comete adulterio.
Enseñanza acerca de los juramentos
33 »También han oído que a nuestros antepasados se les dijo: “No rompas tus juramentos; debes cumplir con los juramentos que le haces al Señor”[k] . 34 Pero yo digo: ¡no hagas juramentos! No digas: “¡Por el cielo!”, porque el cielo es el trono de Dios. 35 Y no digas: “¡Por la tierra!”, porque la tierra es donde descansa sus pies. Tampoco digas: “¡Por Jerusalén!”, porque Jerusalén es la ciudad del gran Rey. 36 Ni siquiera digas: “¡Por mi cabeza!”, porque no puedes hacer que ninguno de tus cabellos se vuelva blanco o negro. 37 Simplemente di: “Sí, lo haré” o “No, no lo haré”. Cualquier otra cosa proviene del maligno.
Enseñanza acerca de la venganza
38 »Han oído la ley que dice que el castigo debe ser acorde a la gravedad del daño: “Ojo por ojo, y diente por diente”[l] . 39 Pero yo digo: no resistas a la persona mala. Si alguien te da una bofetada en la mejilla derecha, ofrécele también la otra mejilla. 40 Si te demandan ante el tribunal y te quitan la camisa, dales también tu abrigo. 41 Si un soldado te exige que lleves su equipo por un kilómetro,[m] llévalo dos. 42 Dales a los que te pidan y no des la espalda a quienes te pidan prestado.
Enseñanza acerca de amar a los enemigos
43 »Han oído la ley que dice: “Ama a tu prójimo”[n] y odia a tu enemigo. 44 Pero yo digo: ¡ama a tus enemigos![o] ¡Ora por los que te persiguen! 45 De esa manera, estarás actuando como verdadero hijo de tu Padre que está en el cielo. Pues él da la luz de su sol tanto a los malos como a los buenos y envía la lluvia sobre los justos y los injustos por igual. 46 Si solo amas a quienes te aman, ¿qué recompensa hay por eso? Hasta los corruptos cobradores de impuestos hacen lo mismo. 47 Si eres amable solo con tus amigos,[p] ¿en qué te diferencias de cualquier otro? Hasta los paganos hacen lo mismo. 48 Pero tú debes ser perfecto, así como tu Padre en el cielo es perfecto.

5 And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him:
2 And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,
3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.
21 Ye have heard that it was said of them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:
22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.
23 Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee;
24 Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.
25 Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.
26 Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.
27 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:
28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.
29 And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
30 And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
31 It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:
32 But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.
33 Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths:
34 But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne:
35 Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King.
36 Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black.
37 But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.
38 Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:
39 But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.
40 And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also.
41 And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.
42 Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.
43 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.
44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;
45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.
46 For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?
47 And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so?
48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.
