Las bienaventuranzas(A)

5 Cuando vio a las multitudes, subió a la ladera de una montaña y se sentó. Sus discípulos se le acercaron, 2 tomó él la palabra y comenzó a enseñarles diciendo:

3 «Dichosos los pobres en espíritu,
    porque el reino de los cielos les pertenece.
4 Dichosos los que sufren,
    porque serán consolados.
5 Dichosos los humildes,
    porque recibirán la tierra como herencia.
6 Dichosos los que tienen hambre y sed de justicia,
    porque serán saciados.
7 Dichosos los compasivos,
    porque serán tratados con compasión.
8 Dichosos los de corazón limpio,
    porque ellos verán a Dios.
9 Dichosos los que trabajan por la paz,
    porque serán llamados hijos de Dios.
10 Dichosos los perseguidos por causa de la justicia,
    porque el reino de los cielos les pertenece.

11 »Dichosos serán ustedes cuando por mi causa la gente los insulte, los persiga y levante contra ustedes toda clase de calumnias. 12 Alégrense y llénense de júbilo, porque les espera una gran recompensa en el cielo. Así también persiguieron a los profetas que los precedieron a ustedes.

La sal y la luz

13 »Ustedes son la sal de la tierra. Pero si la sal pierde su sabor, ¿cómo lo recobrará? Ya no sirve para nada, sino para que la gente la deseche y la pisotee.

14 »Ustedes son la luz del mundo. Una ciudad en lo alto de una montaña no puede esconderse. 15 Tampoco se enciende una lámpara para cubrirla con una vasija. Por el contrario, se pone en el candelero para que alumbre a todos los que están en la casa. 16 Hagan brillar su luz delante de todos, para que ellos puedan ver las buenas obras de ustedes y alaben a su Padre que está en los cielos.

El cumplimiento de la Ley

17 »No piensen que he venido a anular la Ley o los Profetas; no he venido a anularlos, sino a darles cumplimiento. 18 Les aseguro que mientras existan el cielo y la tierra, ni una letra ni una tilde de la Ley desaparecerán hasta que todo se haya cumplido. 19 Todo el que infrinja uno solo de estos mandamientos, por pequeño que sea, y enseñe a otros a hacer lo mismo, será considerado el más pequeño en el reino de los cielos; pero el que los practique y enseñe será considerado grande en el reino de los cielos. 20 Porque les digo a ustedes que no van a entrar en el reino de los cielos a menos que su justicia supere la de los fariseos y la de los maestros de la Ley.

El homicidio(B)

21 »Ustedes han oído que se dijo a sus antepasados: “No mates”.[a] También se les dijo que todo el que mate quedará sujeto al juicio del tribunal. 22 Pero yo digo que todo el que se enoje[b] con su hermano quedará sujeto al juicio del tribunal. Es más, cualquiera que insulte[c] a su hermano quedará sujeto al juicio del Consejo. Y cualquiera que le diga: “Insensato”, quedará sujeto al fuego del infierno.

23 »Por lo tanto, si estás presentando tu ofrenda en el altar y allí recuerdas que tu hermano tiene algo contra ti, 24 deja tu ofrenda allí delante del altar. Ve primero y reconcíliate con tu hermano; luego vuelve y presenta tu ofrenda.

25 »Si tu adversario te va a denunciar, llega a un acuerdo con él lo más pronto posible. Hazlo mientras vayan de camino al juzgado, no sea que te entregue al juez, el juez al guardia y te echen en la cárcel. 26 Te aseguro que no saldrás de allí hasta que pagues el último centavo.[d]

El adulterio

27 »Ustedes han oído que se dijo: “No cometas adulterio”.[e] 28 Pero yo digo que cualquiera que mira a una mujer y la codicia ya ha cometido adulterio con ella en el corazón. 29 Por tanto, si tu ojo derecho te hace pecar, sácatelo y tíralo. Más te vale perder una sola parte de tu cuerpo y no que todo él sea arrojado al infierno. 30 Y si tu mano derecha te hace pecar, córtatela y arrójala. Más te vale perder una sola parte de tu cuerpo y no que todo él vaya al infierno.

El divorcio

31 »Se ha dicho: “El que se divorcia de su esposa debe darle un certificado de divorcio”.[f] 32 Pero yo digo que, excepto en caso de inmoralidad sexual, todo el que se divorcia de su esposa la induce a cometer adulterio y el que se casa con la divorciada comete adulterio.

Los juramentos

33 »También han oído que se dijo a sus antepasados: “No faltes a tu juramento, sino cumple con tus promesas al Señor”. 34 Pero yo digo: No juren de ningún modo: ni por el cielo, porque es el trono de Dios; 35 ni por la tierra, porque es el estrado de sus pies; ni por Jerusalén, porque es la ciudad del gran Rey. 36 Tampoco jures por tu cabeza, porque no puedes hacer que ni uno solo de tus cabellos se vuelva blanco o negro. 37 Cuando ustedes digan “sí”, que sea realmente sí; y cuando digan “no”, que sea no. Cualquier otra cosa que digan más allá de esto proviene del maligno.

Ojo por ojo

38 »Ustedes han oído que se dijo: “Ojo por ojo y diente por diente”.[g] 39 Pero yo digo: No resistan al que les haga mal. Si alguien te da una bofetada en la mejilla derecha, vuélvele también la otra. 40 Si alguien te pone pleito para quitarte la capa, déjale también la camisa. 41 Si alguien te obliga a llevarle la carga una milla,[h] llévasela dos. 42 Al que te pida, dale; y al que quiera tomar de ti prestado, no le vuelvas la espalda.

El amor a los enemigos

43 »Ustedes han oído que se dijo: “Ama a tu prójimo[i] y odia a tu enemigo”. 44 Pero yo digo: Amen a sus enemigos y oren por quienes los persiguen,[j] 45 para que sean hijos de su Padre que está en los cielos. Él hace que salga el sol sobre malos y buenos, y que llueva sobre justos e injustos. 46 Si ustedes aman solamente a quienes los aman, ¿qué recompensa recibirán? ¿Acaso no hacen eso hasta los recaudadores de impuestos? 47 Y si saludan a sus hermanos solamente, ¿qué de más hacen ustedes? ¿Acaso no hacen esto hasta los gentiles? 48 Por tanto, sean perfectos como su Padre celestial es perfecto.

5 Ed egli, vedendo le folle, salí sul monte e, come si fu seduto i suoi discepoli gli si accostarono.

2 Allora egli, aperta la bocca, li ammaestrava, dicendo:

3 «Beati i poveri in spirito, perché di loro è il regno dei cieli.

4 Beati coloro che fanno cordoglio perché saranno consolati.

5 Beati i mansueti, perché essi erediteranno la terra.

6 Beati coloro che sono affamati e assetati di giustizia, perché essi saranno saziati.

7 Beati i misericordiosi, perché essi otterranno misericordia.

8 Beati i puri di cuore, perché essi vedranno Dio.

9 Beati coloro che si adoperano per la pace, perché essi saranno chiamati figli di Dio.

10 Beati coloro che sono perseguitati a causa della giustizia, perché di loro è il regno dei cieli.

13 «Voi siete il sale della terra; ma se il sale diventa insipido, con che cosa gli si renderà il sapore? A null'altro serve che ad essere gettato via e ad essere calpestato dagli uomini.

14 Voi siete la luce del mondo; una città posta sopra un monte non può essere nascosta.

15 Similmente, non si accende una lampada per metterla sotto il moggio, ma sul candeliere, perché faccia luce a tutti coloro che sono in casa.

16 Cosí risplenda la vostra luce davanti agli uomini, affinché vedano le vostre buone opere e glorifichino il Padre vostro che è nei cieli».

17 «Non pensate che io sia venuto ad abrogare la legge o i profeti; io non sono venuto per abrogare, ma per portare a compimento.

18 Perché in verità vi dico: Finché il cielo e la terra non passeranno, neppure un iota, o un solo apice della legge passerà, prima che tutto sia adempiuto.

19 Chi dunque avrà trasgredito uno di questi minimi comandamenti e avrà cosí insegnato agli uomini, sarà chiamato minimo nel regno dei cieli; ma colui che li metterà in pratica e li insegnerà, sarà chiamato grande nel regno dei cieli.

20 Perciò io vi dico: Se la vostra giustizia non supera quella degli scribi, e dei farisei, voi non entrerete affatto nel regno dei cieli.

21 Voi avete udito che fu detto agli antichi: "Non uccidere" e: "Chiunque ucciderà, sarà sottoposto al giudizio";

22 ma io vi dico: Chiunque si adira contro suo fratello senza motivo, sarà sottoposto al giudizio; e chi avrà detto al proprio fratello: "Raca", sarà sottoposto al sinedrio; e chi gli avrà detto: stolto sarà sottoposto al fuoco della Geenna.

23 Se tu dunque stai per presentare la tua offerta all'altare, e lí ti ricordi che tuo fratello ha qualcosa contro di te,

24 lascia lí la tua offerta davanti all'altare e va' prima a riconciliarti con tuo fratello; poi torna e presenta la tua offerta.

25 Fa' presto un accordo amichevole con il tuo avversario, mentre sei sulla via con lui, che talora il tuo avversario non ti dia in mano del giudice e il giudice ti consegni alla guardia e tu sia messo prigione

26 In verità ti dico, che non uscirai di là finché tu non abbia pagato a l'ultimo centesimo.

27 Voi avete udito che fu detto agli antichi: "Non commettere adulterio"

28 Ma io vi dico che chiunque guarda una donna per desiderarla, ha già commesso adulterio con lei nel suo cuore.

29 Ora, se il tuo occhio destro ti è causa di peccato, cavalo e gettalo via da te perché è meglio per te che un tuo membro perisca, piuttosto che tutto il tuo corpo sia gettato nella Geenna;

30 e se la tua mano destra ti è causa di peccato, mozzala e gettala via da te, perché è meglio per te che un tuo membro perisca, piuttosto che tutto il tuo corpo sia gettato nella Geenna.

31 E' stato pure detto: "Chiunque ripudia la propria moglie, le dia l'atto del divorzio".

32 Ma io vi dico: Chiunque manda via la propria moglie, eccetto in caso di fornicazione, la fa essere adultera e chiunque sposa una donna ripudiata commette adulterio.

33 Avete inoltre udito che fu detto agli antichi: "Non giurare il falso; ma adempi le cose promesse con giuramento al Signore".

34 Ma io vi dico: Non giurate affatto, né per il cielo, perché è il trono di Dio.

35 né per la terra, perché è lo sgabello dei suoi piedi, né per Gerusalemme, perché è la città del gran Re.

36 Non giurare neppure per la tua testa, perché non hai il potere di fare bianco o nero un solo capello;

37 ma il vostro parlare sia: Sí, sí, no, no; tutto ciò che va oltre questo, viene dal maligno.

38 Voi avete udito che fu detto: "Occhio per occhio e dente per dente".

39 Ma io vi dico: Non resistere al malvagio; anzi, se uno ti percuote sulla guancia destra, porgigli anche l'altra,

40 e se uno vuol farti causa per toglierti la tunica, lasciagli anche il mantello.

41 E se uno ti costringe a fare un miglio, fanne con lui due.

42 Da' a chi ti chiede, e non rifiutarti di dare a chi desidera qualcosa in prestito da te.

43 Voi avete udito che fu detto: "Ama il tuo prossimo e odia il tuo nemico".

44 Ma io vi dico: Amate i vostri nemici, benedite coloro che vi maledicono, fate del bene a coloro che vi odiano, e pregate per coloro che vi maltrattano e vi perseguitano,

45 affinché siate figli del Padre vostro, che è nei cieli, poiché egli fa sorgere il suo sole sopra i buoni e sopra i malvagi e fa piovere sopra i giusti e sopra gli ingiusti.

46 Perché, se amate coloro che vi amano, che premio ne avrete? Non fanno altrettanto anche i pubblicani?

47 E se salutate soltanto i vostri fratelli, che fate di straordinario? Non fanno altrettanto anche i pubblicani?

48 Voi dunque siate perfetti, come è perfetto il Padre vostro, che è nei cieli».

Jesus Teaches the People(A)

5 When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on ·a hill [the mountain] and sat down. His ·followers [disciples] ·came to [gathered around] him, 2 and he began to teach them, saying:

3 “·They are blessed [or Blessed are those…; C and so through v. 10] who ·realize their spiritual poverty [L are the poor in spirit],
    for the kingdom of heaven ·belongs to them [is theirs].
4 They are blessed who ·grieve [mourn],

The Importance of the Law and the Prophets(C)

25 “If your ·enemy [opponent; adversary; accuser] is taking you to court, ·become friends [reach agreement; settle matters] quickly, ·before you go [on the way] to court. Jesus Teaches About Sexual Sin(E)

27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You ·must [shall] not ·be guilty of [commit] adultery [Ex. 20:14; Deut. 5:18].’ 28 But I tell you that if anyone looks at a woman ·and wants to sin sexually with her [lustfully; L with a desire for her], in his ·mind [heart] he has already ·done that sin [committed adultery] with her. 29 If your right eye causes you to ·sin [L stumble], ·take [tear; gouge] it out and throw it away. Jesus Teaches About Divorce(F)

31 “It was also said, ‘Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a written divorce ·paper [notice; certificate; Deut. 24:1].’ 32 But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife ·forces [causes; makes] her ·to be guilty of [commit] adultery. ·The only reason for a man to divorce his wife is if she has sexual relations with another man [L …except in the case of sexual immorality]. And anyone who marries that divorced woman ·is guilty of [commits] adultery.

Make Promises Carefully

33 “[L Again] You have heard that it was said to ·our people long ago [our ancestors; the ancients], ‘Don’t break your ·promises [vows; oaths], but ·keep [fulfill] the ·promises [vows; oaths] you make to the Lord [Lev. 19:12; Num. 30:2; Deut. 23:21].’ 34 But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all. ·Don’t swear an oath using the name of heaven [L …neither by heaven], because heaven is God’s throne. 35 ·Don’t swear an oath using the name of the earth [L …nor by earth], because the earth ·belongs to God [L is his footstool; Is. 66:1]. ·Don’t swear an oath using the name of Jerusalem […nor by Jerusalem], because it is the city of the great King [Ps. 48:2]. 36 Don’t even swear by your own head, because you cannot make one hair on your head become white or black. 37 ·Say only yes if you mean yes, and no if you mean no [L Let your word “yes” be “yes”; your “no” be “no”]. ·If you say more than yes or no, it [L Anything more than this] is from the Evil One.

Don’t Retaliate(G)

38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth [Ex. 21:24; Lev. 24:20; Deut. 19:21].’ 39 But I tell you, don’t ·stand up against [resist; retaliate against] an evil person. Love All People(H)

43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy [Lev. 19:18].’ 44 But I say to you, love your enemies. Pray for those who ·hurt [persecute] you.[b] 45 ·If you do this, […so that] you will be ·true children [L children; or sons] of your Father in heaven. 5 Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, 2 and he began to teach them.

The Beatitudes(A)

He said:

3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit,
    for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.(B)
4 Blessed are those who mourn,
    for they will be comforted.(C)
5 Blessed are the meek,
    for they will inherit the earth.(D)
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
    for they will be filled.(E)
7 Blessed are the merciful,
    for they will be shown mercy.(F)
8 Blessed are the pure in heart,(G)
    for they will see God.(H)
9 Blessed are the peacemakers,(I)
    for they will be called children of God.(J)
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,(K)

Salt and Light

The Fulfillment of the Law

17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.(W) 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.(X) 19 Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands(Y) and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.(Z)

21 “You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder,[a](AB) and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ 22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry(AC) with a brother or sister[b][c] will be subject to judgment.(AD) Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’[d] is answerable to the court.(AE) And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.(AF)

23 “Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, 24 leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.

25 “Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still together on the way, or your adversary may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. 26 Truly I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.

Adultery

27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’[e](AG) 28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.(AH) 29 If your right eye causes you to stumble,(AI) gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to stumble,(AJ) cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.

Divorce

31 “It has been said, ‘Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.’[f](AK) 32 But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, makes her the victim of adultery, and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.(AL)

Oaths

33 “Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not break your oath,(AM) but fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made.’(AN) 34 But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all:(AO) either by heaven, for it is God’s throne;(AP) 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King.(AQ) 36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. 37 All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’;(AR) anything beyond this comes from the evil one.[g](AS)

Eye for Eye

38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’[h](AT) 39 But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.(AU) 40 And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. 41 If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. 42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.(AV)

Love for Enemies

43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor[i](AW) and hate your enemy.’(AX) 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,(AY) 45 that you may be children(AZ) of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.(BA) 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get?(BB) Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47 And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.(BC)
