La visita de los sabios
2 Jesús nació en Belén de Judea en los tiempos del rey Herodes. En aquel tiempo, unos sabios que venían desde el oriente llegaron a Jerusalén 2 y preguntaron: «¿Dónde está el rey de los judíos, que ha nacido? Porque hemos visto su estrella en el oriente, y venimos a adorarlo.» 3 Cuando el rey Herodes oyó esto, se turbó, y toda Jerusalén con él. 4 Convocó entonces a todos los principales sacerdotes y a los escribas del pueblo, y les preguntó dónde había de nacer el Cristo. 5 Ellos le dijeron: «En Belén de Judea; porque así está escrito por el profeta:
6 »“Y tú, Belén, de la tierra de Judá,
no eres la más pequeña entre los príncipes de Judá;
porque de ti saldrá un guía
que apacentará[a] a mi pueblo Israel.”»(A)
7 Luego, Herodes llamó en secreto a los sabios para saber de ellos el tiempo preciso en que había aparecido la estrella. 8 Los envió a Belén, y les dijo: «Vayan y averigüen con sumo cuidado acerca del niño, y cuando lo encuentren, avísenme, para que yo también vaya a adorarlo.» 9 Después de escuchar al rey, los sabios se fueron. La estrella que habían visto en el oriente iba delante de ellos, hasta que se detuvo sobre el lugar donde estaba el niño. 10 Al ver la estrella, se regocijaron mucho. 11 Cuando entraron en la casa, vieron al niño con su madre María y, postrándose ante él, lo adoraron. Luego, abrieron sus tesoros y le ofrecieron oro, incienso y mirra. 12 Pero como en sueños se les advirtió que no volvieran a donde estaba Herodes, regresaron a su tierra por otro camino.
Matanza de los niños
13 Después de que los sabios partieron, un ángel del Señor se apareció en sueños a José y le dijo: «Levántate, toma al niño y a su madre, y huye a Egipto. Quédate allá hasta que yo te diga, porque Herodes buscará al niño para matarlo.» 14 Cuando él despertó, tomó de noche al niño y a su madre, y se fue a Egipto, 15 y se quedó allá hasta la muerte de Herodes. Esto sucedió para que se cumpliera lo que dijo el Señor por medio del profeta: «De Egipto llamé a mi Hijo.»(B)
16 Cuando Herodes vio que los sabios lo habían engañado, se enojó mucho y, calculando el tiempo indicado por los sabios, mandó matar a todos los niños menores de dos años que vivían en Belén y en sus alrededores. 17 Se cumplió así lo dicho por el profeta Jeremías:
18 «Se oye una voz en Ramá;
gran llanto y gemido:
es Raquel, que llora a sus hijos,
y no quiere ser consolada, porque ya no existen.»(C)
19 Después de que murió Herodes, un ángel del Señor se apareció en sueños a José en Egipto, 20 y le dijo: «Levántate, toma al niño y a su madre, y regresa a Israel, porque los que querían matar al niño han muerto ya.» 21 Entonces José se levantó y llevó al niño y a su madre de regreso a Israel. 22 Cuando supo que Arquelao reinaba en Judea en lugar de su padre Herodes, tuvo temor de ir allá, pero en sueños fue advertido y se dirigió a la región de Galilea. 23 Allí se estableció en una ciudad llamada Nazaret,(D) para que se cumpliera lo que fue dicho por los profetas, que el niño habría de ser llamado nazareno.(E)

2 Cuando Jesús nació en Belén de Judea en días del rey Herodes, vinieron del oriente a Jerusalén unos magos, 2 diciendo: ¿Dónde está el rey de los judíos, que ha nacido? Porque su estrella hemos visto en el oriente, y venimos a adorarle. 3 Oyendo esto, el rey Herodes se turbó, y toda Jerusalén con él. 4 Y convocados todos los principales sacerdotes, y los escribas del pueblo, les preguntó dónde había de nacer el Cristo. 5 Ellos le dijeron: En Belén de Judea; porque así está escrito por el profeta:
6 Y tú, Belén, de la tierra de Judá,
No eres la más pequeña entre los príncipes de Judá;
Porque de ti saldrá un guiador,
7 Entonces Herodes, llamando en secreto a los magos, indagó de ellos diligentemente el tiempo de la aparición de la estrella; 8 y enviándolos a Belén, dijo: Id allá y averiguad con diligencia acerca del niño; y cuando le halléis, hacédmelo saber, para que yo también vaya y le adore. 9 Ellos, habiendo oído al rey, se fueron; y he aquí la estrella que habían visto en el oriente iba delante de ellos, hasta que llegando, se detuvo sobre donde estaba el niño. 10 Y al ver la estrella, se regocijaron con muy grande gozo. 11 Y al entrar en la casa, vieron al niño con su madre María, y postrándose, lo adoraron; y abriendo sus tesoros, le ofrecieron presentes: oro, incienso y mirra. 12 Pero siendo avisados por revelación en sueños que no volviesen a Herodes, regresaron a su tierra por otro camino.

13 Después que partieron ellos, he aquí un ángel del Señor apareció en sueños a José y dijo: Levántate y toma al niño y a su madre, y huye a Egipto, y permanece allá hasta que yo te diga; porque acontecerá que Herodes buscará al niño para matarlo. 14 Y él, despertando, tomó de noche al niño y a su madre, y se fue a Egipto, 15 y estuvo allá hasta la muerte de Herodes; para que se cumpliese lo que dijo el Señor por medio del profeta, cuando dijo: De Egipto llamé a mi Hijo.(B)
16 Herodes entonces, cuando se vio burlado por los magos, se enojó mucho, y mandó matar a todos los niños menores de dos años que había en Belén y en todos sus alrededores, conforme al tiempo que había inquirido de los magos. 17 Entonces se cumplió lo que fue dicho por el profeta Jeremías, cuando dijo:
18 Voz fue oída en Ramá,
Grande lamentación, lloro y gemido;
Raquel que llora a sus hijos,
Y no quiso ser consolada, porque perecieron.(C)
19 Pero después de muerto Herodes, he aquí un ángel del Señor apareció en sueños a José en Egipto, 20 diciendo: Levántate, toma al niño y a su madre, y vete a tierra de Israel, porque han muerto los que procuraban la muerte del niño. 21 Entonces él se levantó, y tomó al niño y a su madre, y vino a tierra de Israel. 22 Pero oyendo que Arquelao reinaba en Judea en lugar de Herodes su padre, tuvo temor de ir allá; pero avisado por revelación en sueños, se fue a la región de Galilea, 23 y vino y habitó en la ciudad que se llama Nazaret,(D) para que se cumpliese lo que fue dicho por los profetas, que habría de ser llamado nazareno.(E)

8 et mittens illos in Bethlehem, dixit: Ite, et interrogate diligenter de puero: et cum inveneritis, renuntiate mihi, ut et ego veniens adorem eum.
9 Qui cum audissent regem, abierunt, et ecce stella, quam viderant in oriente, antecedebat eos, usque dum veniens staret supra, ubi erat puer.
10 Videntes autem stellam gavisi sunt gaudio magno valde.
11 Et intrantes domum, invenerunt puerum cum Maria matre ejus, et procidentes adoraverunt eum: et apertis thesauris suis obtulerunt ei munera, aurum, thus, et myrrham.
12 Et responso accepto in somnis ne redirent ad Herodem, per aliam viam reversi sunt in regionem suam.
13 Qui cum recessissent, ecce angelus Domini apparuit in somnis Joseph, dicens: Surge, et accipe puerum, et matrem ejus, et fuge in AEgyptum, et esto ibi usque dum dicam tibi. Futurum est enim ut Herodes quaerat puerum ad perdendum eum.
14 Qui consurgens accepit puerum et matrem ejus nocte, et secessit in AEgyptum:
15 et erat ibi usque ad obitum Herodis: ut adimpleretur quod dictum est a Domino per prophetam dicentem: Ex AEgypto vocavi filium meum.
16 Tunc Herodes videns quoniam illusus esset a magis, iratus est valde, et mittens occidit omnes pueros, qui erant in Bethlehem, et in omnibus finibus ejus, a bimatu et infra secundum tempus, quod exquisierat a magis.
17 Tunc adimpletum est quod dictum est per Jeremiam prophetam dicentem:
18 Vox in Rama audita est ploratus, et ululatus multus: Rachel plorans filios suos, et noluit consolari, quia non sunt.
19 Defuncto autem Herode, ecce angelus Domini apparuit in somnis Joseph in AEgypto,
20 dicens: Surge, et accipe puerum, et matrem ejus, et vade in terram Israel: defuncti sunt enim qui quaerebant animam pueri.
21 Qui consurgens, accepit puerum, et matrem ejus, et venit in terram Israel.
22 Audiens autem quod Archelaus regnaret in Judaea pro Herode patre suo, timuit illo ire: et admonitus in somnis, secessit in partes Galilaeae.
23 Et veniens habitavit in civitate quae vocatur Nazareth: ut adimpleretur quod dictum est per prophetas: Quoniam Nazaraeus vocabitur.

The Magi Visit the Messiah
2 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea,(A) during the time of King Herod,(B) Magi[a] from the east came to Jerusalem 2 and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews?(C) We saw his star(D) when it rose and have come to worship him.”
3 When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. 4 When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born. 5 “In Bethlehem(E) in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written:
6 “‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for out of you will come a ruler
who will shepherd my people Israel.’[b]”(F)
7 Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. 8 He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.”
9 After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him.(G) Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts(H) of gold, frankincense and myrrh. 12 And having been warned(I) in a dream(J) not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.
The Escape to Egypt
13 When they had gone, an angel(K) of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream.(L) “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”(M)
14 So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, 15 where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled(N) what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.”[c](O)
16 When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. 17 Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:(P)
18 “A voice is heard in Ramah,
weeping and great mourning,
Rachel(Q) weeping for her children
and refusing to be comforted,
because they are no more.”[d](R)
The Return to Nazareth
19 After Herod died, an angel(S) of the Lord appeared in a dream(T) to Joseph in Egypt 20 and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child’s life are dead.”(U)
21 So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. 22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream,(V) he withdrew to the district of Galilee,(W) 23 and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth.(X) So was fulfilled(Y) what was said through the prophets, that he would be called a Nazarene.(Z)
