La demanda de una señal(A)
16 Los fariseos y los saduceos se acercaron a Jesús para ponerlo a prueba, y le pidieron que les mostrara una señal(B) del cielo. 2 Pero él les dijo: «Al llegar la noche, ustedes dicen: “Va a hacer buen tiempo, porque el cielo está rojizo.” 3 Por la mañana, ustedes dicen: “Hoy habrá tempestad, porque el cielo está rojizo y nublado.” ¡Bien que saben distinguir el aspecto del cielo, pero no pueden distinguir las señales de los tiempos! 4 La generación mala y adúltera demanda una señal,(C) pero no recibirá más señal que la del profeta Jonás.»(D) Y los dejó y se fue.
La levadura de los fariseos(E)
5 Los discípulos llegaron al otro lado, pero se olvidaron de llevar pan. 6 En eso, Jesús les dijo: «Abran los ojos y cuídense de la levadura de los fariseos(F) y de los saduceos.» 7 Ellos comentaban entre sí: «Dice esto porque no trajimos pan.» 8 Pero Jesús se dio cuenta y les dijo: «Hombres de poca fe. ¿Por qué discuten entre ustedes que no tienen pan? 9 ¿Todavía no entienden, ni se acuerdan de los cinco panes entre cinco mil hombres,(G) y cuántas cestas recogieron? 10 ¿Ni de los siete panes entre cuatro mil,(H) y cuántas canastas recogieron? 11 ¿Cómo es que no entienden? Si les dije que se cuidaran de la levadura de los fariseos y de los saduceos, no fue por el pan.» 12 Entonces ellos entendieron que no les había dicho que se cuidaran de la levadura del pan, sino de las enseñanzas de los fariseos y de los saduceos.
La confesión de Pedro(I)
13 Al llegar a la región de Cesarea de Filipo, Jesús preguntó a sus discípulos: «¿Quién dice la gente que es el Hijo del Hombre?» 14 Ellos dijeron: «Unos dicen que es Juan el Bautista; otros, que es Elías; y otros, que es Jeremías o alguno de los profetas.»(J) 15 Él les preguntó: «Y ustedes, ¿quién dicen que soy yo?» 16 Simón Pedro respondió: «¡Tú eres el Cristo, el Hijo del Dios viviente!»(K) 17 Entonces Jesús le dijo: «Bienaventurado eres, Simón, hijo de Jonás, porque no te lo reveló ningún mortal, sino mi Padre que está en los cielos. 18 Y yo te digo que tú eres Pedro,[a] y sobre esta roca[b] edificaré mi iglesia, y las puertas del Hades no podrán vencerla. 19 A ti te daré las llaves del reino de los cielos. Todo lo que ates en la tierra será atado en los cielos, y todo lo que desates en la tierra será desatado en los cielos.»(L) 20 Entonces mandó a sus discípulos que no dijeran a nadie que él era Jesús, el Cristo.
Jesús anuncia su muerte(M)
21 Desde entonces Jesús comenzó a explicar a sus discípulos que él debía ir a Jerusalén y padecer mucho a manos de los ancianos, de los principales sacerdotes y de los escribas, y morir, y resucitar al tercer día. 22 Pedro lo llevó aparte y comenzó a reconvenirlo: «Señor, ¡ten compasión de ti mismo! ¡Que esto jamás te suceda!» 23 Pero él se volvió y le dijo a Pedro: «¡Aléjate de mi vista, Satanás! ¡Me eres un tropiezo! ¡Tú no piensas en las cosas de Dios, sino en cuestiones humanas!»
24 A sus discípulos Jesús les dijo: «Si alguno quiere seguirme, niéguese a sí mismo, tome su cruz, y sígame.(N) 25 Porque todo el que quiera salvar su vida, la perderá; y todo el que pierda su vida por causa de mí, la hallará.(O) 26 Porque ¿de qué le sirve a uno ganarse todo el mundo, si pierde su alma? ¿O qué puede dar uno a cambio de su alma? 27 Porque el Hijo del Hombre vendrá en la gloria de su Padre con sus ángeles,(P) y entonces pagará a cada uno conforme a sus obras.(Q) 28 De cierto les digo que algunos de los que están aquí no morirán hasta que hayan visto al Hijo del Hombre venir en su reino.»

The Demand for a Sign
16 And the Pharisees and Sad′ducees came, and to test him they asked him to show them a sign from heaven. 2 He answered them,[a] “When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather; for the sky is red.’ 3 And in the morning, ‘It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. 4 An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign shall be given to it except the sign of Jonah.” So he left them and departed.
The Yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees
5 When the disciples reached the other side, they had forgotten to bring any bread. 6 Jesus said to them, “Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sad′ducees.” 7 And they discussed it among themselves, saying, “We brought no bread.” 8 But Jesus, aware of this, said, “O men of little faith, why do you discuss among yourselves the fact that you have no bread? 9 Do you not yet perceive? Do you not remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? 10 Or the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? 11 How is it that you fail to perceive that I did not speak about bread? Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sad′ducees.” 12 Then they understood that he did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sad′ducees.
Peter’s Declaration about Jesus
13 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesare′a Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do men say that the Son of man is?” 14 And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Eli′jah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jona! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. 18 And I tell you, you are Peter,[b] and on this rock[c] I will build my church, and the powers of death[d] shall not prevail against it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” 20 Then he strictly charged the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.
Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection
21 From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. 22 And Peter took him and began to rebuke him, saying, “God forbid, Lord! This shall never happen to you.” 23 But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance[e] to me; for you are not on the side of God, but of men.”
The Cross and Self-Denial
24 Then Jesus told his disciples, “If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25 For whoever would save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 26 For what will it profit a man, if he gains the whole world and forfeits his life? Or what shall a man give in return for his life? 27 For the Son of man is to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay every man for what he has done. 28 Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.”

2 He replied, “When evening comes, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,’ 3 and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.[a](D) 4 A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.”(E) Jesus then left them and went away.
The Yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees
5 When they went across the lake, the disciples forgot to take bread. 6 “Be careful,” Jesus said to them. “Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”(F)
7 They discussed this among themselves and said, “It is because we didn’t bring any bread.”
8 Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked, “You of little faith,(G) why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread? 9 Do you still not understand? Don’t you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?(H) 10 Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?(I) 11 How is it you don’t understand that I was not talking to you about bread? But be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” 12 Then they understood that he was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.(J)
Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah(K)
13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”
14 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist;(L) others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”(M)
15 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”
16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”(N)
17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood,(O) but by my Father in heaven.(P) 18 And I tell you that you are Peter,[b](Q) and on this rock I will build my church,(R) and the gates of Hades[c] will not overcome it. 19 I will give you the keys(S) of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be[d] bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be[e] loosed in heaven.”(T) 20 Then he ordered his disciples not to tell anyone(U) that he was the Messiah.
Jesus Predicts His Death(V)
21 From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem(W) and suffer many things(X) at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law,(Y) and that he must be killed(Z) and on the third day(AA) be raised to life.(AB)
22 Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. “Never, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to you!”
23 Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan!(AC) You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”
24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.(AD) 25 For whoever wants to save their life[f] will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.(AE) 26 What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 27 For the Son of Man(AF) is going to come(AG) in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.(AH)
28 “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”
