Parábola del sembrador
13 Mas tarde, aquel mismo día, Jesús salió de la casa y se dirigió a la orilla del lago. 2 Pronto se congregó una multitud tan inmensa que se vio obligado a subir a una barca y enseñar desde allí a la gente que lo escuchaba con atención en la orilla. 3-4 En su sermón, empleó muchos simbolismos que ilustraban sus puntos de vista. Por ejemplo, usó el siguiente:
«Un agricultor salió a sembrar sus semillas en el campo. Mientras lo hacía, algunas semillas cayeron en el camino, y las aves vinieron y se las comieron. 5 Otras cayeron sobre terreno pedregoso, donde la tierra no era muy profunda. Las plantas nacieron pronto, pero a flor de tierra, 6 y el sol ardiente las abrasó y se secaron, porque casi no tenían raíz. 7 Otras semillas cayeron entre espinos, y los espinos las ahogaron. 8 Pero algunas cayeron en buena tierra y produjeron una cosecha de treinta, sesenta y hasta cien granos por semilla plantada. 9 ¡El que tenga oídos, oiga!».
10 Sus discípulos se le acercaron y le dijeron:
―¿Por qué usas esos simbolismos tan difíciles de entender?
11 Él les explicó que ellos, los discípulos, era a los únicos a los que se les permitía entender las cosas del reino de los cielos, pero no a los demás. Y añadió:
12 ―Al que tiene se le dará más, pero al que no tiene nada, aun lo poco que tiene le será quitado. 13 Usé estos simbolismos porque esta gente oye y ve, pero no entiende. 14 Así se cumple la profecía de Isaías:
»“Oirán, pero no entenderán; verán, pero no percibirán, 15 porque tienen el corazón endurecido, no oyen bien y tienen los ojos cerrados. Por lo tanto, no verán ni oirán ni entenderán ni se convertirán ni dejarán que yo los sane”.
16 »¡Dichosos los ojos de ustedes, porque ven! ¡Dichosos los oídos de ustedes, porque oyen! 17 Muchos profetas y muchos hombres justos anhelaron ver lo que ustedes están viendo y oír lo que están oyendo; pero no lo lograron. 18 Y ahora les voy a explicar el simbolismo del sembrador.
19 »El camino duro en que algunas de las semillas cayeron representa el corazón de las personas que escuchan las buenas nuevas del reino y no las entienden. Por eso, cuando Satanás llega, les quita lo que se les sembró. 20 El terreno pedregoso y poco profundo simboliza el corazón del hombre que escucha el mensaje y lo recibe con gozo, 21 pero no hay profundidad en su experiencia, y las semillas no echan raíces profundas; luego, cuando aparecen los problemas o las persecuciones por causa de sus creencias, el entusiasmo se le desvanece y se aparta de Dios. 22 El terreno lleno de espinos es el corazón del que escucha el mensaje, pero se afana tanto en esta vida que el amor al dinero ahoga en él la Palabra de Dios, y cada vez trabaja menos para el Señor. 23 La buena tierra representa el corazón del hombre que escucha el mensaje, lo entiende y sale a ganar treinta, sesenta y hasta cien almas para el reino de Dios.
Parábola de la mala hierba
24 Otra de las parábolas o simbolismos que usó Jesús fue la siguiente:
«El reino de los cielos es como el labrador que planta la buena semilla en el campo; 25 pero por la noche, mientras la gente duerme, su enemigo va y siembra malas hierbas entre el trigo. 26 Cuando las plantas empiezan a crecer, la mala hierba crece también. 27 Al verlas, los trabajadores del labrador corren a donde está este y le dicen: “Señor, el terreno en que sembraste aquellos granos de buena calidad está lleno de hierbas malas”. 28 “Seguro que alguno de mis enemigos las sembró”, explicó el labrador. “¿Quieres que arranquemos la mala hierba?”, preguntaron los trabajadores. 29 “No”, respondió el labrador, “porque pueden dañar el trigo. 30 Dejen que crezcan juntos, y cuando llegue el tiempo de la cosecha daremos instrucciones a los segadores para que arranquen primero la cizaña y la quemen; y después, que pongan el trigo en el granero”».
Parábolas del grano de mostaza y de la levadura
31 Jesús también refirió esta otra parábola:
«El reino de los cielos es como una pequeña semilla de mostaza plantada en un campo. 32 La semilla de mostaza es la más pequeña de todas las semillas, pero se convierte en un árbol enorme en cuyas ramas los pájaros hacen sus nidos».
33 Y les dijo también:
«El reino de los cielos es como la levadura que una mujer toma para hacer pan. Luego la mezcla con tres medidas de harina, y leuda toda la masa».
34 Jesús siempre usaba estas ilustraciones cuando hablaba con la multitud. Sin parábolas no les hablaba. 35 Así se cumplió lo que el profeta había dicho:
«Hablaré en parábolas y explicaré las cosas que han estado escondidas desde la fundación del mundo».[a]
Explicación de la parábola de la mala hierba
36 Cuando despidieron a la multitud y regresaron a la casa, sus discípulos le pidieron que les explicara el simbolismo de la mala hierba y el trigo.
37 ―Muy bien —comenzó—: Yo soy el labrador que siembra el grano selecto. 38 El terreno en que se sembró es el mundo y las buenas semillas son los súbditos del reino; las malas hierbas son los súbditos de Satanás. 39 El enemigo que sembró la mala hierba entre el trigo es el diablo; la siega es el fin del mundo, y los segadores son los ángeles. 40 De la misma manera que los segadores separan el trigo de la mala hierba y queman esta, en el fin del mundo 41 enviaré a mis ángeles a arrancar del reino a los que tientan a los demás y a los que hacen el mal. 42 Y una vez arrancados, ¡irán a parar al fuego! Allí será el llorar y el crujir de dientes. 43 Entonces los justos brillarán como el sol en el reino del Padre. ¡El que tenga oídos, oiga!
Parábolas del tesoro escondido y de la perla
44 »El reino de los cielos es también como un tesoro escondido en un terreno. Un hombre viene y lo encuentra. Emocionado y lleno de ilusiones, vende todo lo que tiene y compra el terreno, con lo cual está adquiriendo también el tesoro.
45 »El reino de los cielos es como un mercader de perlas que anda en busca de perlas finas. 46 Por fin descubre una verdadera oportunidad cuando le ofrecen a buen precio una perla de gran valor. Entonces corre, vende todo lo que tiene y la compra.
Parábola de la red
47 »El reino de los cielos es como el pescador que tira la red al agua y recoge peces de todo tipo, buenos y malos. 48 Cuando se llena la red, la lleva a la orilla y se sienta a escoger los pescados. Los buenos los echa en una canasta y los malos los desecha. 49 Así sucederá cuando llegue el fin del mundo. Los ángeles vendrán y separarán a los malos de los justos 50 y arrojarán aquéllos al fuego. Allí será el llorar y el crujir de dientes. 51 ¿Entienden ahora?».
―Sí —contestaron—. Gracias.
52 Entonces Jesús añadió:
―Los maestros de la ley que se han convertido en mis discípulos tienen a su alcance un tesoro doble: las antiguas verdades de las Escrituras y las verdades nuevas que mis enseñanzas revelan.
Un profeta sin honra
53 Al terminar de exponer estos simbolismos, Jesús fue 54 a Nazaret de Galilea, el pueblo de su niñez, y allí enseñaba en la sinagoga. La gente estaba maravillada con su sabiduría y por sus milagros.
55 ―¿Será posible? —comentaban—. Este es hijo de María y del carpintero, y hermano de Jacobo, José, Simón y Judas. 56 Sus hermanas viven aquí mismo. ¿De dónde habrá sacado tanta sabiduría?
57 Y terminaron enojándose con él. Entonces Jesús les dijo.
―Al profeta nunca lo aceptan en su propia tierra ni entre su propia gente.
58 Por causa de la incredulidad de la gente no hizo allí muchos milagros.

La parábola del sembrador(A)
13 Aquel mismo día salió Jesús de casa y se sentó a la orilla del lago. 2 Como se reunió mucha gente, Jesús subió a una barca y se sentó, mientras la gente se quedaba en la playa. 3 Entonces se puso a hablarles de muchas cosas por medio de parábolas.
Les dijo: «Un sembrador salió a sembrar. 4 Y al sembrar, una parte de la semilla cayó en el camino, y llegaron las aves y se la comieron. 5 Otra parte cayó entre las piedras, donde no había mucha tierra; esa semilla brotó pronto, porque la tierra no era muy honda; 6 pero el sol, al salir, la quemó, y como no tenía raíz, se secó. 7 Otra parte de la semilla cayó entre espinos, y los espinos crecieron y la ahogaron. 8 Pero otra parte cayó en buena tierra, y dio buena cosecha; algunas espigas dieron cien granos por semilla, otras sesenta granos, y otras treinta. 9 Los que tienen oídos, oigan.»
El porqué de las parábolas(B)
10 Los discípulos se acercaron a Jesús y le preguntaron por qué hablaba a la gente por medio de parábolas. 11 Jesús les contestó: «A ustedes, Dios les da a conocer los secretos del reino de los cielos; pero a ellos no. 12 Pues al que tiene, se le dará más, y tendrá bastante; pero al que no tiene, hasta lo poco que tiene se le quitará. 13 Por eso les hablo por medio de parábolas; porque ellos miran, pero no ven; escuchan, pero no oyen ni entienden. 14 Así, en el caso de ellos se cumple lo que dijo el profeta Isaías:
“Por más que escuchen, no entenderán,
por más que miren, no verán.
15 Pues la mente de este pueblo está entorpecida,
tienen tapados los oídos
y han cerrado sus ojos,
para no ver ni oír,
para no entender ni volverse a mí,
para que yo no los sane.”
16 »Pero dichosos ustedes, porque tienen ojos que ven y oídos que oyen. 17 Les aseguro que muchos profetas y personas justas quisieron ver esto que ustedes ven, y no lo vieron; quisieron oír esto que ustedes oyen, y no lo oyeron.
Jesús explica la parábola del sembrador(C)
18 »Escuchen, pues, lo que quiere decir la parábola del sembrador: 19 Los que oyen el mensaje del reino y no lo entienden, son como la semilla que cayó en el camino; viene el maligno y les quita el mensaje sembrado en su corazón. 20 La semilla que cayó entre las piedras representa a los que oyen el mensaje y lo reciben con gusto, 21 pero como no tienen suficiente raíz, no se mantienen firmes; cuando por causa del mensaje sufren pruebas o persecución, fallan. 22 La semilla sembrada entre espinos representa a los que oyen el mensaje, pero los negocios de esta vida les preocupan demasiado y el amor por las riquezas los engaña. Todo esto ahoga el mensaje y no lo deja dar fruto en ellos. 23 Pero la semilla sembrada en buena tierra representa a los que oyen el mensaje y lo entienden y dan una buena cosecha, como las espigas que dieron cien, sesenta o treinta granos por semilla.»
La parábola de la mala hierba entre el trigo
24 Jesús les contó esta otra parábola: «Sucede con el reino de los cielos como con un hombre que sembró buena semilla en su campo; 25 pero cuando todos estaban durmiendo, llegó un enemigo, sembró mala hierba entre el trigo y se fue. 26 Cuando el trigo creció y se formó la espiga, apareció también la mala hierba. 27 Entonces los trabajadores fueron a decirle al dueño: “Señor, si la semilla que sembró usted en el campo era buena, ¿de dónde ha salido la mala hierba?” 28 El dueño les dijo: “Algún enemigo ha hecho esto.” Los trabajadores le preguntaron: “¿Quiere usted que vayamos a arrancar la mala hierba?” 29 Pero él les dijo: “No, porque al arrancar la mala hierba pueden arrancar también el trigo. 30 Lo mejor es dejarlos crecer juntos hasta la cosecha; entonces mandaré a los que han de recogerla que recojan primero la mala hierba y la aten en manojos, para quemarla, y que después guarden el trigo en mi granero.”»
La parábola de la semilla de mostaza(D)
31 Jesús también les contó esta parábola: «El reino de los cielos es como una semilla de mostaza que un hombre siembra en su campo. 32 Es, por cierto, la más pequeña de todas las semillas; pero cuando crece, se hace más grande que las otras plantas del huerto, y llega a ser como un árbol, tan grande que las aves van y se posan en sus ramas.»
La parábola de la levadura(E)
33 También les contó esta parábola: «El reino de los cielos es como la levadura que una mujer mezcla con tres medidas de harina para hacer fermentar toda la masa.»
Cumplimiento de la Escritura(F)
34 Jesús habló de todo esto a la gente por medio de parábolas, y sin parábolas no les hablaba. 35 Esto fue para que se cumpliera lo que había dicho el profeta:
«Hablaré por medio de parábolas;
diré cosas que han estado en secreto
desde que Dios hizo el mundo.»
Jesús explica la parábola de la mala hierba
36 Jesús despidió entonces a la gente y entró en la casa, donde sus discípulos se le acercaron y le pidieron que les explicara la parábola de la mala hierba en el campo. 37 Jesús les respondió: «El que siembra la buena semilla es el Hijo del hombre, 38 y el campo es el mundo. La buena semilla representa a los que son del reino, y la mala hierba representa a los que son del maligno, 39 y el enemigo que sembró la mala hierba es el diablo. La cosecha representa el fin del mundo, y los que recogen la cosecha son los ángeles. 40 Así como la mala hierba se recoge y se echa al fuego para quemarla, así sucederá también al fin del mundo. 41 El Hijo del hombre mandará a sus ángeles a recoger de su reino a todos los que hacen pecar a otros, y a los que practican el mal. 42 Los echarán en el horno encendido, y vendrán el llanto y la desesperación. 43 Entonces los justos brillarán como el sol en el reino de su Padre. Los que tienen oídos, oigan.
La parábola del tesoro escondido
44 »El reino de los cielos es como un tesoro escondido en un terreno. Un hombre encuentra el tesoro, y lo vuelve a esconder allí mismo; lleno de alegría, va y vende todo lo que tiene, y compra ese terreno.
La parábola de la perla de mucho valor
45 »Sucede también con el reino de los cielos como con un comerciante que andaba buscando perlas finas; 46 cuando encontró una de mucho valor, fue y vendió todo lo que tenía, y compró esa perla.
La parábola de la red
47 »Sucede también con el reino de los cielos como con la red que se echa al mar y recoge toda clase de pescado. 48 Cuando la red se llena, los pescadores la sacan a la playa, donde se sientan a escoger el pescado; guardan el bueno en canastas y tiran el malo. 49 Así también sucederá al fin del mundo: saldrán los ángeles para separar a los malos de los buenos, 50 y echarán a los malos en el horno de fuego. Entonces vendrán el llanto y la desesperación.»
Lo nuevo y lo viejo
51 Jesús preguntó:
—¿Entienden ustedes todo esto?
—Sí —contestaron ellos.
52 Entonces Jesús les dijo:
—Cuando un maestro de la ley se instruye acerca del reino de los cielos, se parece al dueño de una casa, que de lo que tiene guardado sabe sacar cosas nuevas y cosas viejas.
Jesús en Nazaret(G)
53 Cuando Jesús terminó de contar estas parábolas, se fue de allí 54 y llegó a su propia tierra, donde comenzó a enseñar en la sinagoga del lugar. La gente, admirada, decía:
—¿Dónde aprendió éste todo lo que sabe? ¿Cómo puede hacer esos milagros? 55 ¿No es éste el hijo del carpintero, y no es María su madre? ¿No es el hermano de Santiago, José, Simón y Judas, 56 y no viven sus hermanas también aquí entre nosotros? ¿De dónde le viene todo esto?
57 Y se resistían a creer en él. Pero Jesús les dijo:
—En todas partes se honra a un profeta, menos en su propia tierra y en su propia casa.
58 Y no hizo allí muchos milagros porque aquella gente no tenía fe en él.

撒种的比喻
13 当天，耶稣离开房子，坐在湖边。 2 有一大群人聚集到祂周围，祂只好上船坐下，众人都站在岸上。 3 祂用比喻给他们讲许多道理，说：“有一个农夫出去撒种。 4 撒种的时候，有些种子落在路旁，被飞鸟吃掉了； 5 有些落在石头地上，因为泥土不深，种子很快就发芽了，然而因为没有根， 6 被太阳一晒，就枯萎了； 7 有些落在荆棘丛中，荆棘长起来便把嫩苗挤住了； 8 有些落在沃土里，就结出果实，收成多达三十倍、六十倍、一百倍。 9 有耳朵的，都应当听。”
用比喻的目的
10 门徒上前问耶稣：“你为什么要用比喻来教导他们呢？”
11 耶稣回答说：“天国的奥秘只让你们知道，不让他们知道。 12 因为凡有的，还要给他更多，他就丰富有余；凡没有的，连他仅有的也要夺去。 13 我用比喻教导他们是因为他们视而不见，听而不闻，闻而不悟。 14 以赛亚的预言正应验在他们身上，
“‘你们听了又听，却不明白；
看了又看，却不领悟。
15 因为这些人心灵麻木，
耳朵发背，眼睛昏花，
以致眼睛看不见，耳朵听不见，
心里不明白，无法回心转意，
得不到我的医治。’
16 “但你们的眼睛是有福的，因为看得见；你们的耳朵也是有福的，因为听得见。 17 我实在告诉你们，以前有许多先知和义人曾渴望看见你们所看见的，听见你们所听见的，却未能如愿。
解释比喻
18 “所以，你们应当留心这撒种的比喻。 19 种子落在路旁，是指人听了天国的道理却不明白，魔鬼乘虚而入，把撒在他心里的夺走了； 20 种子落在石头地上，是指人听了道后，立刻欢喜地接受了， 21 但因为他心里没有根基，不过是暂时接受，一旦为道遭受患难或迫害，就立刻放弃了信仰； 22 种子落在荆棘丛中，是指人虽然听过道，但生活的忧虑和钱财的迷惑把道挤住了，以致不能结出果实。 23 种子落在沃土里，是指人听了道，并明白了道，就结出果实来，有的多达一百倍，有的六十倍，有的三十倍。”
毒麦的比喻
24 耶稣又给他们讲了一个比喻，说：“天国就像一个人，将好种子撒在田里。 25 人们睡觉的时候，仇敌过来把毒麦撒在他的麦田里，就走了。 26 当麦子长苗吐穗时，毒麦也长起来了。 27 奴仆看见了就来问主人，‘主人啊！你不是把好种子撒在田里了吗？从哪里来的毒麦呢？’
28 “主人回答说，‘这是仇敌做的。’奴仆问道，‘要我们去拔掉它们吗？’
29 “主人说，‘不用了，因为拔毒麦会连麦子一起拔掉。 30 让它们跟麦子一起生长吧，到收割的时候，我会吩咐收割的工人先把毒麦收集起来，扎成捆，留着烧，然后将麦子存入谷仓。’”
芥菜种和面酵的比喻
31 耶稣又给他们讲了一个比喻：“天国就像一粒芥菜种，人把它种在田里。 32 它虽然是种子中最小的，却长得比其他蔬菜都大，并且长成一棵树，天空的飞鸟也来栖息。”
33 祂又给他们讲了个比喻：“天国就像面酵，妇人拿来掺在三斗面里，使整盆面都发起来。”
34 耶稣总是用比喻对众人讲这些事，祂每次对他们讲话时都用比喻。 35 这是要应验先知的话：“我要开口讲比喻，道出创世以来隐藏的事。”
解释毒麦的比喻
36 后来，耶稣离开人群，进到屋里。门徒也跟着进去，对耶稣说：“请为我们解释毒麦的比喻。”
37 耶稣说：“那撒下好种子的就是人子， 38 麦田代表整个世界，那些好种子就是天国的子民。毒麦就是那些属于魔鬼的人， 39 撒毒麦的仇敌就是魔鬼。收割的日子便是世界的末日，收割的工人就是天使。
40 “毒麦怎样被拔出来丢在火里烧，同样，在世界末日的时候， 41 人子也将派天使把一切引人犯罪和作孽的人从祂国里挑出来， 42 丢进火里。那时，他们将在那里哀哭切齿。 43 那时，义人要在他们天父的国度像太阳一样发出光辉。有耳朵的，都应当听。
宝藏与珍珠的比喻
44 “天国就像藏在地里的宝贝，有人发现了，就把它埋好，然后欢然变卖他所有的财产去买那块地。
45 “天国就像一个四处搜购贵重珍珠的商人。 46 他找到一颗极贵重的珍珠，就变卖了一切的产业，把它买下来。
撒网的比喻
47 “天国就像一张渔网，撒在海里捕到了各种鱼。 48 网满了，人们把网拉上岸，然后坐下来挑选，好的就收起来，不好的就丢掉。 49 世界末日的时候也是这样。天使必把恶人从义人中拣出来， 50 丢在火炉里，让恶人在那里哀哭切齿。 51 你们明白这些事了吗？”
他们回答说：“我们明白了。”
52 耶稣说：“律法教师成为天国的门徒后，就像一个家的主人，能从他的库房里拿出新的和旧的东西来。”
拿撒勒人厌弃耶稣
53 耶稣讲完了这些比喻，就离开那里， 54 回到自己的家乡拿撒勒，在会堂里教导人。人们很惊奇，说：“这个人从哪里得到如此的智慧和神奇的能力呢？ 55 这不是那木匠的儿子吗？祂母亲不是玛丽亚吗？祂的弟弟不是雅各、约瑟、西门和犹大吗？ 56 祂的妹妹们不也是住在我们这里吗？祂究竟从哪里得来这一身本领呢？” 57 他们就对祂很反感。
耶稣对他们说：“先知到处受人尊敬，只有在本乡本家例外。” 58 因为他们不信，耶稣就没有在那里多行神迹。

13 That same day Jesus went out of the house(D) and sat by the lake. 2 Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat(E) and sat in it, while all the people stood on the shore. 3 Then he told them many things in parables, saying: “A farmer went out to sow his seed. 4 As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5 Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. 6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred,(F) sixty or thirty times what was sown. 9 Whoever has ears, let them hear.”(G)
10 The disciples came to him and asked, “Why do you speak to the people in parables?”
11 He replied, “Because the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven(H) has been given to you,(I) but not to them. 12 Whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them.(J) 13 This is why I speak to them in parables:
“Though seeing, they do not see;
though hearing, they do not hear or understand.(K)
14 In them is fulfilled(L) the prophecy of Isaiah:
“‘You will be ever hearing but never understanding;
you will be ever seeing but never perceiving.
15 For this people’s heart has become calloused;
they hardly hear with their ears,
and they have closed their eyes.
Otherwise they might see with their eyes,
hear with their ears,
understand with their hearts
and turn, and I would heal them.’[a](M)
16 But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear.(N) 17 For truly I tell you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see(O) but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.
18 “Listen then to what the parable of the sower means: 19 When anyone hears the message about the kingdom(P) and does not understand it, the evil one(Q) comes and snatches away what was sown in their heart. This is the seed sown along the path. 20 The seed falling on rocky ground refers to someone who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. 21 But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away.(R) 22 The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth(S) choke the word, making it unfruitful. 23 But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it. This is the one who produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.”(T)
The Parable of the Weeds
24 Jesus told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like(U) a man who sowed good seed in his field. 25 But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away. 26 When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared.
27 “The owner’s servants came to him and said, ‘Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from?’
28 “‘An enemy did this,’ he replied.
“The servants asked him, ‘Do you want us to go and pull them up?’
29 “‘No,’ he answered, ‘because while you are pulling the weeds, you may uproot the wheat with them. 30 Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.’”(V)
The Parables of the Mustard Seed and the Yeast(W)(X)
31 He told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like(Y) a mustard seed,(Z) which a man took and planted in his field. 32 Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.”(AA)
33 He told them still another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like(AB) yeast that a woman took and mixed into about sixty pounds[b] of flour(AC) until it worked all through the dough.”(AD)
34 Jesus spoke all these things to the crowd in parables; he did not say anything to them without using a parable.(AE) 35 So was fulfilled(AF) what was spoken through the prophet:
“I will open my mouth in parables,
I will utter things hidden since the creation of the world.”[c](AG)
The Parable of the Weeds Explained
36 Then he left the crowd and went into the house. His disciples came to him and said, “Explain to us the parable(AH) of the weeds in the field.”
37 He answered, “The one who sowed the good seed is the Son of Man.(AI) 38 The field is the world, and the good seed stands for the people of the kingdom. The weeds are the people of the evil one,(AJ) 39 and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest(AK) is the end of the age,(AL) and the harvesters are angels.(AM)
40 “As the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the age. 41 The Son of Man(AN) will send out his angels,(AO) and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. 42 They will throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.(AP) 43 Then the righteous will shine like the sun(AQ) in the kingdom of their Father. Whoever has ears, let them hear.(AR)
The Parables of the Hidden Treasure and the Pearl
44 “The kingdom of heaven is like(AS) treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.(AT)
45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like(AU) a merchant looking for fine pearls. 46 When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.
The Parable of the Net
47 “Once again, the kingdom of heaven is like(AV) a net that was let down into the lake and caught all kinds(AW) of fish. 48 When it was full, the fishermen pulled it up on the shore. Then they sat down and collected the good fish in baskets, but threw the bad away. 49 This is how it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous(AX) 50 and throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.(AY)
51 “Have you understood all these things?” Jesus asked.
“Yes,” they replied.
52 He said to them, “Therefore every teacher of the law who has become a disciple in the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house who brings out of his storeroom new treasures as well as old.”
A Prophet Without Honor(AZ)
53 When Jesus had finished these parables,(BA) he moved on from there. 54 Coming to his hometown, he began teaching the people in their synagogue,(BB) and they were amazed.(BC) “Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?” they asked. 55 “Isn’t this the carpenter’s son?(BD) Isn’t his mother’s(BE) name Mary, and aren’t his brothers(BF) James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? 56 Aren’t all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?” 57 And they took offense(BG) at him.
But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town and in his own home.”(BH)
58 And he did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith.

10 And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables? 11 He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. 12 For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath. 13 Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. 14 And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive: 15 for this people’s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. 16 But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear. 17 For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.
18 Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower. 19 When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side. 20 But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it; 21 yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended. 22 He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful. 23 But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.
24 Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field: 25 but while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way. 26 But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also. 27 So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares? 28 He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up? 29 But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them. 30 Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.
31 Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field: 32 which indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof.
33 Another parable spake he unto them; The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven, which a woman took, and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.
34 All these things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables; and without a parable spake he not unto them: 35 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world.
36 Then Jesus sent the multitude away, and went into the house: and his disciples came unto him, saying, Declare unto us the parable of the tares of the field. 37 He answered and said unto them, He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man; 38 the field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one; 39 the enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels. 40 As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world. 41 The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; 42 and shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. 43 Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. 44 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.
45 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls: 46 who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.
47 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a net, that was cast into the sea, and gathered of every kind: 48 which, when it was full, they drew to shore, and sat down, and gathered the good into vessels, but cast the bad away. 49 So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just, 50 and shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.
51 Jesus saith unto them, Have ye understood all these things? They say unto him, Yea, Lord. 52 Then said he unto them, Therefore every scribe which is instructed unto the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old.
53 And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these parables, he departed thence. 54 And when he was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works? 55 Is not this the carpenter’s son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas? 56 And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this man all these things? 57 And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house. 58 And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief.
