Los mensajeros de Juan el Bautista
(Lc. 7.18-35)
11 Cuando Jesús terminó de dar instrucciones a sus doce discípulos, se fue de allí a enseñar y a predicar en las ciudades de ellos.
2 Y al oír Juan, en la cárcel, los hechos de Cristo, le envió dos de sus discípulos, 3 para preguntarle: ¿Eres tú aquel que había de venir, o esperaremos a otro? 4 Respondiendo Jesús, les dijo: Id, y haced saber a Juan las cosas que oís y veis. 5 Los ciegos ven, los cojos andan, los leprosos son limpiados, los sordos oyen,(A) los muertos son resucitados, y a los pobres es anunciado el evangelio;(B) 6 y bienaventurado es el que no halle tropiezo en mí.
7 Mientras ellos se iban, comenzó Jesús a decir de Juan a la gente: ¿Qué salisteis a ver al desierto? ¿Una caña sacudida por el viento? 8 ¿O qué salisteis a ver? ¿A un hombre cubierto de vestiduras delicadas? He aquí, los que llevan vestiduras delicadas, en las casas de los reyes están. 9 Pero ¿qué salisteis a ver? ¿A un profeta? Sí, os digo, y más que profeta. 10 Porque este es de quien está escrito:
He aquí, yo envío mi mensajero delante de tu faz,
El cual preparará tu camino delante de ti.(C)
11 De cierto os digo: Entre los que nacen de mujer no se ha levantado otro mayor que Juan el Bautista; pero el más pequeño en el reino de los cielos, mayor es que él. 12 Desde los días de Juan el Bautista hasta ahora, el reino de los cielos sufre violencia, y los violentos lo arrebatan. 13 Porque todos los profetas y la ley profetizaron hasta Juan.(D) 14 Y si queréis recibirlo, él es aquel Elías que había de venir.(E) 15 El que tiene oídos para oír, oiga. 16 Mas ¿a qué compararé esta generación? Es semejante a los muchachos que se sientan en las plazas, y dan voces a sus compañeros, 17 diciendo: Os tocamos flauta, y no bailasteis; os endechamos, y no lamentasteis. 18 Porque vino Juan, que ni comía ni bebía, y dicen: Demonio tiene. 19 Vino el Hijo del Hombre, que come y bebe, y dicen: He aquí un hombre comilón, y bebedor de vino, amigo de publicanos y de pecadores. Pero la sabiduría es justificada por sus hijos.
Ayes sobre las ciudades impenitentes
(Lc. 10.13-16)
20 Entonces comenzó a reconvenir a las ciudades en las cuales había hecho muchos de sus milagros, porque no se habían arrepentido, diciendo: 21 ¡Ay de ti, Corazín! ¡Ay de ti, Betsaida! Porque si en Tiro y en Sidón(F) se hubieran hecho los milagros que han sido hechos en vosotras, tiempo ha que se hubieran arrepentido en cilicio y en ceniza. 22 Por tanto os digo que en el día del juicio, será más tolerable el castigo para Tiro y para Sidón, que para vosotras. 23 Y tú, Capernaum, que eres levantada hasta el cielo, hasta el Hades[a] serás abatida;(G) porque si en Sodoma(H) se hubieran hecho los milagros que han sido hechos en ti, habría permanecido hasta el día de hoy. 24 Por tanto os digo que en el día del juicio, será más tolerable el castigo para la tierra de Sodoma,(I) que para ti.
Venid a mí y descansad
(Lc. 10.21-22)
25 En aquel tiempo, respondiendo Jesús, dijo: Te alabo, Padre, Señor del cielo y de la tierra, porque escondiste estas cosas de los sabios y de los entendidos, y las revelaste a los niños. 26 Sí, Padre, porque así te agradó. 27 Todas las cosas me fueron entregadas por mi Padre;(J) y nadie conoce al Hijo, sino el Padre, ni al Padre conoce alguno, sino el Hijo,(K) y aquel a quien el Hijo lo quiera revelar. 28 Venid a mí todos los que estáis trabajados y cargados, y yo os haré descansar. 29 Llevad mi yugo sobre vosotros, y aprended de mí, que soy manso y humilde de corazón; y hallaréis descanso para vuestras almas;(L) 30 porque mi yugo es fácil, y ligera mi carga.

Jesus und Johannes der Täufer
11 Und es geschah, als Jesus die Befehle an seine zwölf Jünger vollendet hatte, zog er von dort weg, um in ihren Städten zu lehren und zu verkündigen.
2 Als aber Johannes im Gefängnis von den Werken des Christus hörte, sandte er zwei seiner Jünger
3 und ließ ihm sagen: Bist du derjenige, der kommen soll[a], oder sollen wir auf einen anderen warten?
4 Und Jesus antwortete und sprach zu ihnen: Geht hin und berichtet dem Johannes, was ihr hört und seht:
5 Blinde werden sehend und Lahme gehen, Aussätzige werden rein und Taube hören, Tote werden auferweckt, und Armen wird das Evangelium verkündigt.
6 Und glückselig ist, wer nicht Anstoß nimmt an mir!
7 Als aber diese unterwegs waren, fing Jesus an, zu der Volksmenge über Johannes zu reden: Was seid ihr in die Wüste hinausgegangen zu sehen? Ein Rohr, das vom Wind bewegt wird?
8 Oder was seid ihr hinausgegangen zu sehen? Einen Menschen, mit weichen Kleidern bekleidet? Siehe, die, welche weiche Kleider tragen, sind in den Häusern der Könige!
9 Oder was seid ihr hinausgegangen zu sehen? Einen Propheten? Ja, ich sage euch: einen, der mehr ist als ein Prophet!
10 Denn dieser ist"s, von dem geschrieben steht: »Siehe, ich sende meinen Boten vor deinem Angesicht her, der deinen Weg vor dir bereiten soll«.[b]
11 Wahrlich, ich sage euch: Unter denen, die von Frauen geboren sind, ist kein Größerer aufgetreten als Johannes der Täufer; doch der Kleinste im Reich der Himmel ist größer als er.
12 Aber von den Tagen Johannes des Täufers an bis jetzt leidet das Reich der Himmel Gewalt, und die, welche Gewalt anwenden, reißen es an sich.
13 Denn alle Propheten und das Gesetz haben geweissagt bis hin zu Johannes.
14 Und wenn ihr es annehmen wollt: Er ist der Elia, der kommen soll.
15 Wer Ohren hat zu hören, der höre!
16 Wem soll ich aber dieses Geschlecht vergleichen? Es ist Kindern gleich, die an den Marktplätzen sitzen und ihren Freunden zurufen
17 und sprechen: Wir haben euch aufgespielt, und ihr habt nicht getanzt; wir haben euch Klagelieder gesungen, und ihr habt nicht geweint!
18 Denn Johannes ist gekommen, der aß nicht und trank nicht; da sagen sie: Er hat einen Dämon!
19 Der Sohn des Menschen ist gekommen, der isst und trinkt; da sagen sie: Wie ist der Mensch ein Fresser und Weinsäufer, ein Freund der Zöllner und Sünder! Und doch ist die Weisheit gerechtfertigt worden von ihren Kindern.
Weheruf über unbußfertige Städte
20 Da fing er an, die Städte zu schelten, in denen die meisten seiner Wundertaten geschehen waren, weil sie nicht Buße getan hatten:
21 Wehe dir, Chorazin! Wehe dir, Bethsaida! Denn wenn in Tyrus und Zidon die Wundertaten geschehen wären, die bei euch geschehen sind, so hätten sie längst in Sack und Asche Buße getan.
22 Doch ich sage euch: Es wird Tyrus und Zidon erträglicher gehen am Tag des Gerichts als euch!
23 Und du, Kapernaum, die du bis zum Himmel erhöht worden bist, du wirst bis zum Totenreich[c] hinabgeworfen werden! Denn wenn in Sodom die Wundertaten geschehen wären, die bei dir geschehen sind, es würde noch heutzutage stehen.
24 Doch ich sage euch: Es wird dem Land Sodom erträglicher gehen am Tag des Gerichts als dir!
Jesus, der Heiland für die Unmündigen und Bedrückten
25 Zu jener Zeit begann Jesus und sprach: Ich preise dich, Vater, Herr des Himmels und der Erde, dass du dies vor den Weisen und Klugen verborgen und es den Unmündigen geoffenbart hast!
26 Ja, Vater, denn so ist es wohlgefällig gewesen vor dir.
27 Alles ist mir von meinem Vater übergeben worden, und niemand erkennt den Sohn als nur der Vater; und niemand erkennt den Vater als nur der Sohn und der, welchem der Sohn es offenbaren will.
28 Kommt her zu mir alle, die ihr mühselig und beladen seid, so will ich euch erquicken[d]!
29 Nehmt auf euch mein Joch[e] und lernt von mir, denn ich bin sanftmütig und von Herzen demütig; so werdet ihr Ruhe finden für eure Seelen!
30 Denn mein Joch ist sanft und meine Last ist leicht.

John’s Questions
11 When Jesus had finished giving instructions to His twelve disciples, He went on from there to teach and to preach in their [Galilean] cities.
2 Now when [a]John [the Baptist] in prison heard about the activities of Christ, he sent word by his disciples(A) 3 and asked Him, “Are You the Expected One (the Messiah), or should we look for someone else [who will be the promised One]?”(B) 4 Jesus answered, “Go and report to John what you hear and see: 5 the blind receive [their] sight and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed [by healing] and the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.(C) 6 And blessed [joyful, favored by God] is he who does not take offense at Me [accepting Me as the Messiah and trusting confidently in My message of salvation].”(D)
Jesus’ Tribute to John
7 As these men were going away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out in the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind [which is commonplace]? 8 What did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing [entirely unsuited for the harsh desert]? Those who wear soft clothing are in the palaces of kings! 9 But what did you [really] go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and one [more eminent, more remarkable, and] [b]far more than a prophet [who foretells the future]. 10 This is the one of whom it is written [by the prophet Malachi],
‘Behold, I send My messenger ahead of You,
Who will prepare Your way before You.’(E)
11 I assure you and most solemnly say to you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater [in privilege] than he. 12 From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violent assault, and violent men seize it by force [as a precious prize]. 13 For all the prophets and the Law prophesied up until John. 14 And if you are willing to accept it, John himself is [the fulfillment of] Elijah [as the messenger] who was to come [before the kingdom].(F) 15 He who has ears to hear, let him hear and heed My words.
16 “But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like little children sitting in the market places, who call to the others, 17 and say ‘We piped the flute for you [playing wedding], and you did not dance; we wailed sad dirges [playing funeral], and you did not mourn and cry aloud.’ 18 For John came neither eating nor drinking [with others], and they say, ‘He has a demon!’ 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking [with others], and they say, ‘Look! A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners [including non-observant Jews]!’ Yet wisdom is justified and vindicated by her deeds [in the lives of those who respond to Me].”
The Unrepenting Cities
20 Then He began to denounce [the people in] the cities in which most of His miracles were done, because they did not repent [and change their hearts and lives]. 21 “Woe (judgment is coming) to you, [c]Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon [cities of the Gentiles], they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes [their hearts would have been changed and they would have expressed sorrow for their sin and rebellion against God]. 22 Nevertheless I say to you, it will be more tolerable for [the pagan cities of] Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you. 23 And you, Capernaum, are you to be exalted to heaven [for your apathy and unresponsiveness]? You will descend to Hades (the realm of the dead); for if the miracles done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. 24 But I say to you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom on the day of judgment, than for you.”
Come to Me
25 At that time Jesus said, “I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth [I openly and joyfully acknowledge Your great wisdom], that You have hidden these things [these spiritual truths] from the wise and intelligent and revealed them to infants [to new believers, to those seeking God’s will and purpose]. 26 Yes, Father, for this way was well-pleasing in Your sight. 27 All things have been handed over to Me by My Father; and no one fully knows and accurately understands the Son except the Father; and no one fully knows and accurately understands the Father except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son [deliberately] wills to reveal Him.
28 “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavily burdened [by religious rituals that provide no peace], and I will give you rest [refreshing your souls with salvation]. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me [following Me as My disciple], for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest (renewal, blessed quiet) for your souls.(G) 30 For My yoke is easy [to bear] and My burden is light.”

Jesus and John the Baptist(A)
11 After Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples,(B) he went on from there to teach and preach in the towns of Galilee.[a]
2 When John,(C) who was in prison,(D) heard about the deeds of the Messiah, he sent his disciples 3 to ask him, “Are you the one who is to come,(E) or should we expect someone else?”
4 Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what you hear and see: 5 The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy[b] are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor.(F) 6 Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.”(G)
7 As John’s(H) disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness(I) to see? A reed swayed by the wind? 8 If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings’ palaces. 9 Then what did you go out to see? A prophet?(J) Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 10 This is the one about whom it is written:
11 Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subjected to violence,[d] and violent people have been raiding it. 13 For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John.(M) 14 And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come.(N) 15 Whoever has ears, let them hear.(O)

Woe on Unrepentant Towns(S)

25 At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father,(AB) Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.(AC) 26 Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.
27 “All things have been committed to me(AD) by my Father.(AE) No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.(AF)
28 “Come to me,(AG) all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.(AH) 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,(AI) for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.(AJ) 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”(AK)
