2 Juan, que estaba en la cárcel, se enteró de los hechos de Cristo y envió a dos de sus discípulos 3 para que le preguntaran: «¿Eres tú aquel que había de venir, o esperaremos a otro?» 4 Jesús les respondió: «Vuelvan y cuéntenle a Juan las cosas que han visto y oído. 5 Los ciegos ven, los cojos andan, los leprosos son limpiados, los sordos oyen,(A) los muertos son resucitados, y a los pobres se les anuncian las buenas noticias.(B) 6 Bienaventurado el que no tropieza por causa de mí.»
7 Mientras ellos se iban, Jesús comenzó a decir a la gente acerca de Juan: «¿Qué fueron ustedes a ver al desierto? ¿Una caña sacudida por el viento? 8 ¿Qué fueron a ver? ¿A un hombre vestido con ropa elegante? Los que se visten con ropa elegante se encuentran en los palacios. 9 Pero ¿qué es lo que ustedes fueron a ver? ¿A un profeta? Yo les digo que sí, ¡y a alguien mayor que un profeta! 10 Porque éste es de quien está escrito:
“Yo envío mi mensajero delante de ti,
El cual preparará tu camino.”(C)
11 »De cierto les digo que, entre los que nacen de mujer, no ha surgido nadie mayor que Juan el Bautista. Aun así, el más pequeño en el reino de los cielos es mayor que él. 12 Desde los días de Juan el Bautista hasta ahora, el reino de los cielos sufre violencia, y los violentos lo arrebatan. 13 Y todos los profetas y la ley profetizaron hasta Juan.(D) 14 Si quieren recibirlo, él es Elías, el que había de venir.(E) 15 El que tenga oídos para oír, que oiga. 16 Pero ¿con qué compararé a esta generación? Se parece a los niños que se sientan en las plazas y les gritan a sus compañeros: 17 “Tocamos la flauta, y ustedes no bailaron; entonamos cantos fúnebres, y ustedes no lloraron.” 18 Porque vino Juan, que ni comía ni bebía, y dicen que tiene un demonio; 19 luego vino el Hijo del Hombre, que come y bebe, y lo califican de glotón y borracho, y de ser amigo de cobradores de impuestos y de pecadores. Pero a la sabiduría la reivindican sus hijos.»

2 Y al oír Juan, en la cárcel, los hechos de Cristo, le envió dos de sus discípulos, 3 para preguntarle: ¿Eres tú aquel que había de venir, o esperaremos a otro? 4 Respondiendo Jesús, les dijo: Id, y haced saber a Juan las cosas que oís y veis. 5 Los ciegos ven, los cojos andan, los leprosos son limpiados, los sordos oyen,(A) los muertos son resucitados, y a los pobres es anunciado el evangelio;(B) 6 y bienaventurado es el que no halle tropiezo en mí.
7 Mientras ellos se iban, comenzó Jesús a decir de Juan a la gente: ¿Qué salisteis a ver al desierto? ¿Una caña sacudida por el viento? 8 ¿O qué salisteis a ver? ¿A un hombre cubierto de vestiduras delicadas? He aquí, los que llevan vestiduras delicadas, en las casas de los reyes están. 9 Pero ¿qué salisteis a ver? ¿A un profeta? Sí, os digo, y más que profeta. 10 Porque este es de quien está escrito:
He aquí, yo envío mi mensajero delante de tu faz,
El cual preparará tu camino delante de ti.(C)
11 De cierto os digo: Entre los que nacen de mujer no se ha levantado otro mayor que Juan el Bautista; pero el más pequeño en el reino de los cielos, mayor es que él. 12 Desde los días de Juan el Bautista hasta ahora, el reino de los cielos sufre violencia, y los violentos lo arrebatan. 13 Porque todos los profetas y la ley profetizaron hasta Juan.(D) 14 Y si queréis recibirlo, él es aquel Elías que había de venir.(E) 15 El que tiene oídos para oír, oiga. 16 Mas ¿a qué compararé esta generación? Es semejante a los muchachos que se sientan en las plazas, y dan voces a sus compañeros, 17 diciendo: Os tocamos flauta, y no bailasteis; os endechamos, y no lamentasteis. 18 Porque vino Juan, que ni comía ni bebía, y dicen: Demonio tiene. 19 Vino el Hijo del Hombre, que come y bebe, y dicen: He aquí un hombre comilón, y bebedor de vino, amigo de publicanos y de pecadores. Pero la sabiduría es justificada por sus hijos.

2 When John,(A) who was in prison,(B) heard about the deeds of the Messiah, he sent his disciples 3 to ask him, “Are you the one who is to come,(C) or should we expect someone else?”
4 Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what you hear and see: 5 The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy[a] are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor.(D) 6 Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.”(E)
7 As John’s(F) disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness(G) to see? A reed swayed by the wind? 8 If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings’ palaces. 9 Then what did you go out to see? A prophet?(H) Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 10 This is the one about whom it is written:
11 Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subjected to violence,[c] and violent people have been raiding it. 13 For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John.(K) 14 And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come.(L) 15 Whoever has ears, let them hear.(M)
16 “To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others:
17 “‘We played the pipe for you,
and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge,
and you did not mourn.’
18 For John came neither eating(N) nor drinking,(O) and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’(P) But wisdom is proved right by her deeds.”

2 Now when John in prison heard about the activities of Christ, he sent a message by his disciples
3 And asked Him, Are You the One Who was to come, or should we keep on expecting a different one?(A)
4 And Jesus replied to them, Go and report to John what you hear and see:
5 The blind receive their sight and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed (by healing) and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up and the poor have good news (the Gospel) preached to them.(B)
6 And blessed (happy, fortunate, and [a]to be envied) is he who takes no offense at Me and finds no cause for stumbling in or through Me and is not hindered from seeing the Truth.
7 Then as these men went their way, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: What did you go out in the wilderness (desert) to see? A reed swayed by the wind?
8 What did you go out to see then? A man clothed in soft garments? Behold, those who wear soft clothing are in the houses of kings.
9 But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and one [[b]out of the common, more eminent, more remarkable, and] [c]superior to a prophet.
10 This is the one of whom it is written, Behold, I send My messenger ahead of You, who shall make ready Your way before You.(C)
11 Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
12 And from the days of John the Baptist until the present time, the kingdom of heaven has endured violent assault, and violent men seize it by force [as a precious prize—a [d]share in the heavenly kingdom is sought with most ardent zeal and intense exertion].
13 For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied up until John.
14 And if you are willing to receive and accept it, John himself is Elijah who was to come [before the kingdom].(D)
15 He who has ears to hear, let him be listening and let him consider and [e]perceive and comprehend by hearing.
16 But to what shall I liken this generation? It is like little children sitting in the marketplaces who call to their playmates,
17 We piped to you [playing wedding], and you did not dance; we wailed dirges [playing funeral], and you did not mourn and beat your breasts and weep aloud.
18 For John came neither eating nor drinking [with others], and they say, He has a demon!
19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking [with others], and they say, Behold, a glutton and a wine drinker, a friend of tax collectors and [[f]especially wicked] sinners! Yet wisdom is justified and vindicated by what she does (her deeds) and by [g]her children.
