Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection

21 (A)From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that (B)he must go to Jerusalem and (C)suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on (D)the third day be raised. 22 And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord![a] This shall never happen to you.” 23 But he turned and said to Peter, (E)“Get behind me, Satan! You are (F)a hindrance[b] to me. For you (G)are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”

Take Up Your Cross and Follow Jesus

24 Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him (H)deny himself and (I)take up his cross and follow me. 25 For (J)whoever would save his life[c] will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 26 For (K)what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or (L)what shall a man give in return for his soul? 27 (M)For the Son of Man is going to come with (N)his angels in the glory of his Father, and (O)then he will repay each person according to what he has done. 28 Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not (P)taste death (Q)until they see the Son of Man (R)coming in his kingdom.”

The Transfiguration

17 (S)And after six days Jesus took with him (T)Peter and James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was (U)transfigured before them, and (V)his face shone like the sun, and (W)his clothes became white as light. And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. And Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you and one for Moses and one for (X)Elijah.” He was still speaking when, behold, (Y)a bright cloud overshadowed them, and (Z)a voice from the cloud said, (AA)“This is my beloved Son,[d] with whom I am well pleased; (AB)listen to him.” When (AC)the disciples heard this, (AD)they fell on their faces and were terrified. But Jesus came and (AE)touched them, saying, “Rise, and (AF)have no fear.” And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only.

(AG)And as they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, (AH)“Tell no one the vision, until the Son of Man is raised from the dead.” 10 And the disciples asked him, “Then why do the scribes say (AI)that first Elijah must come?” 11 He answered, “Elijah does come, and (AJ)he will restore all things. 12 But I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but (AK)did to him whatever they pleased. (AL)So also the Son of Man will certainly suffer at their hands.” 13 (AM)Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them of John the Baptist.
