¹⁵ “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”

¹⁶ Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”^(A)

¹⁷ Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood,^(B) but by my Father in heaven.^{(C) 18} And I tell you that you are Peter,^[a](D) and on this rock I will build my church,^(E) and the gates of Hades^[b] will not overcome it. ¹⁹ I will give you the keys^(F) of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be^[c] bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be^[d] loosed in heaven.”^{(G) 20} Then he ordered his disciples not to tell anyone^(H) that he was the Messiah.

Jesus Predicts His Death^(I)

²¹ From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem^(J) and suffer many things^(K) at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law,^(L) and that he must be killed^(M) and on the third day^(N) be raised to life.^(O)

²² Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. “Never, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to you!”

²³ Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan!^(P) You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”

²⁴ Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.^{(Q) 25} For whoever wants to save their life^[e] will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.^{(R) 26} What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? ²⁷ For the Son of Man^(S) is going to come^(T) in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.^(U)

²⁸ “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”

²⁰ “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”

Peter answered, “God’s Messiah.”^(A)

Jesus Predicts His Death

²¹ Jesus strictly warned them not to tell this to anyone.^{(B) 22} And he said, “The Son of Man^(C) must suffer many things^(D) and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law,^(E) and he must be killed^(F) and on the third day^(G) be raised to life.”^(H)

²³ Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.^{(I) 24} For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it.^{(J) 25} What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self? ²⁶ Whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them^(K) when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.^(L)

Jesus Predicts His Death^(A)

³¹ He then began to teach them that the Son of Man^(B) must suffer many things^(C) and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law,^(D) and that he must be killed^(E) and after three days^(F) rise again.^{(G) 32} He spoke plainly^(H) about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.

³³ But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. “Get behind me, Satan!”^(I) he said. “You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”

The Way of the Cross

³⁴ Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.^{(J) 35} For whoever wants to save their life^[a] will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it.^{(K) 36} What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? ³⁷ Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? ³⁸ If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man^(L) will be ashamed of them^(M) when he comes^(N) in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”
