Jesus sa sedan till dem: ”Sannerligen säger jag er: några av er som står här kommer inte att dö förrän de har sett Guds rike komma med makt.[a]

Jesus förvandlas på berget

(Matt 17:1-13; Luk 9:28-36)

Sex dagar senare tog Jesus med sig Petrus, Jakob och Johannes till ett högt berg, där de kunde vara för sig själva. Där förvandlades han inför dem. Hans kläder blev bländande vita, vitare än något blekningsmedel i världen kan göra kläder. Och de fick se Elia och Mose stå och tala med Jesus.[b] Då sa Petrus till Jesus: ”Rabbi[c], det är gott att få vara här! Låt oss bygga tre hyddor, en åt dig och en åt Mose och en åt Elia.” Han visste inte vad han skulle säga, för de var helt skräckslagna.

Sedan kom ett moln och sänkte sig ner över dem, och en röst från molnet sa: ”Detta är min älskade Son. Lyssna på honom!”

Men då de plötsligt såg sig omkring, såg de ingen där mer, förutom Jesus.

På väg ner från berget befallde Jesus dem att inte berätta för någon vad de sett, förrän Människosonen hade uppstått från de döda. 10 Därför höll de det för sig själva men talade med varandra om vad som menades med att ”uppstå från de döda”.

11 Lärjungarna frågade honom nu: ”Varför säger de skriftlärda att Elia först måste komma?” 12 Jesus svarade: ”Elia ska komma först och ställa allt till rätta.[d] Men varför står det i Skriften att Människosonen måste lida och bli föraktad? 13 Jag säger er, att Elia redan har kommit och de behandlade honom som de ville, precis som det står skrivet om honom.[e]

Jesus botar en pojke som är besatt av en ond ande

(Matt 17:14-19; Luk 9:37-42)

14 När de hade kommit tillbaka till de övriga lärjungarna, fick de se mycket folk som hade samlats runt dem, och några skriftlärda som höll på att diskutera med dem. 15 Men när folket fick se Jesus blev de överväldigade och sprang fram till honom för att hälsa på honom. 16 Och han frågade dem: ”Vad är det ni diskuterar med dem?”

17 En man i folkhopen sa då: ”Mästare, jag har tagit med min son hit som är besatt av en ond ande som gör honom stum. 18 Varje gång anden går till attack, slår den honom till marken och får honom att tugga fradga och gnissla tänder, och han blir alldeles stel. Jag bad dina lärjungar att driva ut den onda anden, men de klarade det inte.”

19 ”Detta trolösa släkte!” svarade Jesus. ”Hur länge måste jag vara hos er? Hur länge måste jag stå ut med er? Ta hit honom till mig.”

20 Då kom de fram med honom. Men när han fick se Jesus började anden rycka och slita i honom, så att han föll till marken och vältrade sig med fradga runt munnen. 21 ”Hur länge har han varit sådan här?” frågade Jesus hans far. Han svarade: ”Ända sedan han var liten. 22 Och den har ofta kastat honom i elden eller i vattnet för att döda honom. Ha medlidande med oss och hjälp oss, om du kan!”

23 ”Om jag kan?” svarade Jesus. ”Allt är möjligt för den som tror.”

24 ”Jag tror”, utropade pojkens far. ”Hjälp min otro!”

25 Men nu såg Jesus att folk kom springande från alla håll, och därför talade han strängt till den orena anden och sa: ”Du stumma och döva ande, jag befaller dig att fara ut ur honom och aldrig mer komma tillbaka!” 26 Anden skrek och ryckte och slet i pojken men for till sist ut ur honom. Pojken låg där alldeles livlös, och många sa: ”Han är död.” 27 Men Jesus tog honom i handen och drog upp honom, och då reste han sig upp.

28 När Jesus sedan kom hem och blev ensam med sina lärjungar, frågade de honom: ”Varför kunde inte vi driva ut den?”

29 Jesus svarade: ”Den sorten kan bara drivas ut genom bön.[f]

Jesus förutsäger för andra gången att han ska dö

(Matt 17:22-23; Luk 9:43-45)

30 Sedan gick de därifrån och vandrade genom Galileen. Han försökte undvika att det skulle bli känt, 31 eftersom han undervisade sina lärjungar.

Han sa: ”Människosonen ska överlämnas till människorna, och de kommer att döda honom, men efter tre[g] dagar ska han uppstå från de döda.”

32 Men de förstod inte vad han talade om, och de vågade inte fråga heller.

Jesus förklarar vem som är störst

(Matt 18:1-5; Luk 9:46-48)

33 Så kom de till Kafarnaum, och när de var hemma, frågade han dem: ”Vad pratade ni om på vägen?” 34 Men de teg, för de hade diskuterat vem av dem som var störst.

35 Då satte han sig ner och bad de tolv att komma till honom, och han sa till dem: ”Den som vill vara den främste måste göra sig minst och bli allas tjänare.”

36 Sedan tog han ett barn och ställde det mitt ibland dem, lade armen om barnet och sa: 37 ”Den som tar emot ett sådant barn i mitt namn, han tar emot mig. Och den som tar emot mig, han tar inte emot mig utan den som har sänt mig.”

Lärjungarna förbjuder en man att göra under i Jesus namn

(Matt 10:42; Luk 9:49-50)

38 Johannes sa till Jesus: ”Mästare, vi såg en man som drev ut onda andar i ditt namn, men eftersom han inte var en av oss försökte vi stoppa honom.”

39 Då sa Jesus: ”Låt honom hållas. Ingen som gör under i mitt namn kan plötsligt efteråt börja tala illa om mig. 40 Den som inte är mot oss, han är för oss. 41 Sannerligen säger jag er: om någon bara ger er ett glas vatten att dricka därför att ni tillhör Kristus, så ska han inte gå miste om sin lön.

Jesus varnar för förförelser

(Matt 18:8-9; Luk 17:1-2)

42 Om någon förför en av dessa små som tror på mig, så skulle det vara bättre för den personen att kastas i havet med en kvarnsten runt halsen. 43 Om din hand förför dig, så hugg av den. Det är bättre att gå in i livet stympad, än att ha båda händerna i behåll och hamna i Gehenna[h], i den eld som aldrig slocknar.[i] 45 Och om din fot förför dig, så hugg av den. Det är bättre att gå in i livet handikappad, än att ha båda fötterna i behåll och kastas i Gehenna.[j]

47 Om ditt öga förför dig, så riv ut det. Det är bättre att gå in i Guds rike enögd, än att ha båda ögonen i behåll och kastas i Gehenna, 48 där

’deras maskar aldrig ska dö
    och deras eld aldrig släckas.’ [k]

49 Alla måste saltas genom eld.[l] 50 Salt är bra, men till vilken nytta är saltet om det har förlorat sin kraft? Kan man få det salt igen? Bevara er sälta och lev i fred med varandra!”[m]

And he said to them, “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see that the kingdom of God has come(A) with power.”(B)

The Transfiguration(C)(D)

After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John(E) with him and led them up a high mountain, where they were all alone. There he was transfigured before them. His clothes became dazzling white,(F) whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them. And there appeared before them Elijah and Moses, who were talking with Jesus.

Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi,(G) it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what to say, they were so frightened.)

Then a cloud appeared and covered them, and a voice came from the cloud:(H) “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!”(I)

Suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus.

As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus gave them orders not to tell anyone(J) what they had seen until the Son of Man(K) had risen from the dead. 10 They kept the matter to themselves, discussing what “rising from the dead” meant.

11 And they asked him, “Why do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?”

12 Jesus replied, “To be sure, Elijah does come first, and restores all things. Why then is it written that the Son of Man(L) must suffer much(M) and be rejected?(N) 13 But I tell you, Elijah has come,(O) and they have done to him everything they wished, just as it is written about him.”

Jesus Heals a Boy Possessed by an Impure Spirit(P)

14 When they came to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and the teachers of the law arguing with them. 15 As soon as all the people saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with wonder and ran to greet him.

16 “What are you arguing with them about?” he asked.

17 A man in the crowd answered, “Teacher, I brought you my son, who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech. 18 Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit, but they could not.”

19 “You unbelieving generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy to me.”

20 So they brought him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth.(Q)

21 Jesus asked the boy’s father, “How long has he been like this?”

“From childhood,” he answered. 22 “It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.”

23 “‘If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes.”(R)

24 Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”

25 When Jesus saw that a crowd was running to the scene,(S) he rebuked the impure spirit. “You deaf and mute spirit,” he said, “I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.”

26 The spirit shrieked, convulsed him violently and came out. The boy looked so much like a corpse that many said, “He’s dead.” 27 But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him to his feet, and he stood up.

28 After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately,(T) “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”

29 He replied, “This kind can come out only by prayer.[a]

Jesus Predicts His Death a Second Time(U)

30 They left that place and passed through Galilee. Jesus did not want anyone to know where they were, 31 because he was teaching his disciples. He said to them, “The Son of Man(V) is going to be delivered into the hands of men. They will kill him,(W) and after three days(X) he will rise.”(Y) 32 But they did not understand what he meant(Z) and were afraid to ask him about it.

33 They came to Capernaum.(AA) When he was in the house,(AB) he asked them, “What were you arguing about on the road?” 34 But they kept quiet because on the way they had argued about who was the greatest.(AC)

35 Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.”(AD)

36 He took a little child whom he placed among them. Taking the child in his arms,(AE) he said to them, 37 “Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me.”(AF)

Whoever Is Not Against Us Is for Us(AG)

38 “Teacher,” said John, “we saw someone driving out demons in your name and we told him to stop, because he was not one of us.”(AH)

39 “Do not stop him,” Jesus said. “For no one who does a miracle in my name can in the next moment say anything bad about me, 40 for whoever is not against us is for us.(AI) 41 Truly I tell you, anyone who gives you a cup of water in my name because you belong to the Messiah will certainly not lose their reward.(AJ)

Causing to Stumble

42 “If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble,(AK) it would be better for them if a large millstone were hung around their neck and they were thrown into the sea.(AL) 43 If your hand causes you to stumble,(AM) cut it off. It is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go into hell,(AN) where the fire never goes out.(AO) [44] [b] 45 And if your foot causes you to stumble,(AP) cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than to have two feet and be thrown into hell.(AQ) [46] [c] 47 And if your eye causes you to stumble,(AR) pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell,(AS) 48 where

“‘the worms that eat them do not die,
    and the fire is not quenched.’[d](AT)

49 Everyone will be salted(AU) with fire.

50 “Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can you make it salty again?(AV) Have salt among yourselves,(AW) and be at peace with each other.”(AX)

Yeshua was telling them, “Amen, I tell you, there are some standing here who will never taste death until they see the kingdom of God come with power!”

A Glimpse of His Glory

After six days, Yeshua takes with Him Peter and Jacob and John, and brings them up a high mountain by themselves. And He was transfigured before them. His clothes became radiant and brilliantly white, whiter than any launderer on earth could bleach them. Then Elijah appeared to them with Moses, and they were talking with Yeshua.

Peter responds to Yeshua, “Rabbi, it’s good for us to be here. Let’s make three sukkot—one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” (He didn’t know what to say, for they were terrified.)

Then a cloud came, overshadowing them;[a] and out of the cloud came a voice, “This is My Son, whom I love. Listen to Him!” [b] Suddenly when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Yeshua.

As they were coming down from the mountain, Yeshua ordered them not to tell anyone what they had seen, until the Son of Man rose up from the dead. 10 They kept this word to themselves, discussing among themselves what it is to rise up from the dead. 11 And they questioned Him, saying, “Why do the Torah scholars say that Elijah must come first?”

12 Now He told them, “Indeed Elijah comes first;[c] he restores all things. And how is it written that the Son of Man must suffer much and be treated with contempt? [d] 13 I tell you that Elijah has come, and they did to him whatever they wanted, just as it is written about him.”[e]

The Secret of Prayer

14 When they came to the disciples, they saw a big crowd around them and the Torah scholars arguing with them. 15 Suddenly, when the whole crowd saw Yeshua, they were amazed and began running to greet Him. 16 He questioned them, “What are you arguing about with them?”

17 And a man from the crowd answered Him, “Teacher, I brought You my son, who has a spirit that makes him mute. 18 Whenever it seizes him, it throws him down; he foams at the mouth, grinds his teeth, and becomes stiff. I told Your disciples to drive it out, but they couldn’t!”

19 And answering them, He said, “Oh faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring him to Me.”

20 They brought the boy to Yeshua. When the spirit saw Him, immediately it threw the boy into a convulsion. The boy fell to the ground and began rolling around and foaming at the mouth. 21 Yeshua asked the father, “How long has this been happening to him?”

“Since he was a child,” the man answered. 22 “It has often thrown him into fire or water to destroy him. But if You can do anything, have compassion and help us!”

23 “‘If You can’?” Yeshua said to him. “All things are possible for one who believes!”

24 Immediately the boy’s father cried out, “I believe! Help my unbelief!”

25 When Yeshua saw that a crowd was gathering fast, He rebuked the unclean spirit, telling it, “I command you, deaf and mute spirit, come out of him and do not ever enter him again!”

26 After howling and shaking the boy wildly, it came out. The boy became so much like a corpse that many were saying, “He’s dead!” 27 But Yeshua took him by the hand and lifted him, and the boy stood up.

28 After Yeshua came into the house, His disciples began questioning Him in private, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”

29 And He said to them, “This kind cannot come out except by prayer.”[f]

30 They left from there and passed through the Galilee. Yeshua didn’t want anyone to know, 31 for He was teaching His disciples and telling them, “The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill Him. And after He is killed, three days later He will rise up.” 32 But the disciples didn’t understand this statement, and they were afraid to question Him about it.

The Secret of Childlike Humility

33 Then they came to Capernaum. And when Yeshua was in the house, He began to ask the disciples, “What were you discussing on the way?” 34 But they kept quiet, because on the way they had argued with one another about who was the greatest.

35 Sitting down, He called the Twelve and said to them, “If any man wants to be first, he shall be least of all and the servant of everyone.” 36 Taking a small child, He set him in the midst of them. And taking him in His arms, He said to them, 37 “Whoever welcomes one of these children in My name, welcomes Me; and whoever welcomes Me, welcomes not Me but the One who sent Me.”

38 John said to Him, “Teacher, we saw someone driving out demons in Your name, and we tried to stop him because he wasn’t following us.”

39 But Yeshua responded, “Don’t stop him! No one who does a miracle in My name will be able soon afterward to speak evil about Me. 40 He who is not against us is for us. 41 For whoever gives you a cup of water to drink in My name because you belong to Messiah, amen I tell you, he will never lose his reward.”

42 “But whoever causes one of these little ones who trust in Me to stumble, it would be better for him to have a heavy millstone put around his neck and to be thrown into the sea!”

The Secret of Salt

43 “And if your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off! It is better for you to enter into life crippled than, having two hands, to go to Gehenna,[g] into the unquenchable fire. (44)  [h] 45 And if your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off! It’s better for you to enter life lame than, having your two feet, to be thrown into Gehenna. (46)  47 If your eye causes you to stumble, tear it out! It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than, having two eyes, to be thrown into Gehenna, 48 where

‘their worm does not die
and the fire is not quenched.’[i]

49 “For everyone will be salted with fire. 50 Salt is good; but if the salt becomes unsalty, with what will you flavor it? Have salt in yourselves, and keep shalom with one another.”
