Das Leiden und Sterben Jesu Christi
Der Plan der obersten Priester und Schriftgelehrten
14 Es war aber zwei Tage vor dem Passah und dem Fest der ungesäuerten Brote. Und die obersten Priester und die Schriftgelehrten suchten, wie sie ihn mit List ergreifen und töten könnten;
2 sie sprachen aber: Nicht während des Festes, damit kein Aufruhr unter dem Volk entsteht!
Die Salbung Jesu in Bethanien
3 Und als er in Bethanien im Haus Simons des Aussätzigen war und zu Tisch saß, da kam eine Frau mit einem Alabasterfläschchen voll Salböl, echter, kostbarer Narde[a]; und sie zerbrach das Alabasterfläschchen und goss es aus auf sein Haupt.
4 Es wurden aber etliche unwillig bei sich selbst und sprachen: Wozu ist diese Verschwendung des Salböls geschehen?
5 Man hätte dies doch um mehr als 300 Denare verkaufen und den Armen geben können! Und sie murrten über sie.
6 Jesus aber sprach: Lasst sie! Warum bekümmert ihr sie? Sie hat ein gutes Werk an mir getan.
7 Denn die Armen habt ihr allezeit bei euch, und ihr könnt ihnen Gutes tun, wann immer ihr wollt; mich aber habt ihr nicht allezeit.
8 Sie hat getan, was sie konnte; sie hat meinen Leib im Voraus zum Begräbnis gesalbt.
9 Wahrlich, ich sage euch: Wo immer dieses Evangelium verkündigt wird in der ganzen Welt, da wird man auch von dem sprechen, was diese getan hat, zu ihrem Gedenken!
Der Verrat des Judas
10 Da ging Judas Ischariot, einer von den Zwölfen, hin zu den obersten Priestern, um ihn an sie zu verraten.
11 Sie aber waren erfreut, als sie das hörten, und versprachen, ihm Geld zu geben. Und er suchte eine gute Gelegenheit, um ihn zu verraten.
Das letzte Passahmahl
12 Und am ersten Tag der ungesäuerten Brote, als man das Passahlamm schlachtete, sprachen seine Jünger zu ihm: Wo willst du, dass wir hingehen und das Passah zubereiten, damit du es essen kannst?
13 Und er sendet zwei seiner Jünger und spricht zu ihnen: Geht in die Stadt; da wird euch ein Mensch begegnen, der einen Wasserkrug trägt; dem folgt,
14 und wo er hineingeht, da sagt zu dem Hausherrn: Der Meister lässt fragen: Wo ist das Gastzimmer, in dem ich mit meinen Jüngern das Passah essen kann?
15 Und er wird euch einen großen Obersaal zeigen, der mit Polstern belegt und hergerichtet ist; dort bereitet es für uns zu.
16 Und seine Jünger gingen hin und kamen in die Stadt und fanden es, wie er ihnen gesagt hatte; und sie bereiteten das Passah.
17 Und als es Abend geworden war, kam er mit den Zwölfen.
18 Und als sie zu Tisch saßen und aßen, sprach Jesus: Wahrlich, ich sage euch: Einer von euch, der mit mir isst, wird mich verraten!
19 Da fingen sie an, betrübt zu werden, und fragten ihn einer nach dem anderen: Doch nicht ich? Und der Nächste: Doch nicht ich?
20 Er aber antwortete und sprach zu ihnen: Einer von den Zwölfen, der mit mir [das Brot] in die Schüssel eintaucht!
21 Der Sohn des Menschen geht zwar dahin, wie von ihm geschrieben steht; aber wehe jenem Menschen, durch den der Sohn des Menschen verraten wird! Es wäre für jenen Menschen besser, wenn er nicht geboren wäre!
Die Einsetzung des Mahles des Herrn
22 Und während sie aßen, nahm Jesus Brot, sprach den Segen, brach es, gab es ihnen und sprach: Nehmt, esst! Das ist mein Leib.
23 Und er nahm den Kelch, dankte und gab ihnen denselben; und sie tranken alle daraus.
24 Und er sprach zu ihnen: Das ist mein Blut, das des neuen Bundes, welches für viele vergossen wird.
25 Wahrlich, ich sage euch: Ich werde nicht mehr von dem Gewächs des Weinstocks trinken bis zu jenem Tag, da ich es neu trinken werde im Reich Gottes.
Die Ankündigung der Verleugnung durch Petrus
26 Und nachdem sie den Lobgesang gesungen hatten, gingen sie hinaus an den Ölberg.
27 Und Jesus spricht zu ihnen: Ihr werdet in dieser Nacht alle an mir Anstoß nehmen; denn es steht geschrieben: »Ich werde den Hirten schlagen, und die Schafe werden sich zerstreuen«.[b]
28 Aber nach meiner Auferweckung will ich euch nach Galiläa vorangehen.
29 Petrus aber sagte zu ihm: Wenn auch alle an dir Anstoß nehmen, doch nicht ich!
30 Und Jesus spricht zu ihm: Wahrlich, ich sage dir: Heute, in dieser Nacht, ehe der Hahn zweimal kräht, wirst du mich dreimal verleugnen!
31 Er aber sagte desto mehr: Wenn ich auch mit dir sterben müsste, werde ich dich nicht verleugnen! Das Gleiche sagten aber auch alle.
Gethsemane
32 Und sie kommen zu einem Grundstück namens Gethsemane[c]. Und er spricht zu seinen Jüngern: Setzt euch hier hin, bis ich gebetet habe!
33 Und er nahm Petrus und Jakobus und Johannes mit sich; und er fing an, zu erschrecken, und ihm graute sehr.
34 Und er sprach zu ihnen: Meine Seele ist tief betrübt bis zum Tod. Bleibt hier und wacht!
35 Und er ging ein wenig weiter, warf sich auf die Erde und betete, dass, wenn es möglich wäre, die Stunde an ihm vorüberginge.
36 Und er sprach: Abba, Vater! Alles ist dir möglich; nimm diesen Kelch von mir! Doch nicht, was ich will, sondern was du willst!
37 Und er kommt und findet sie schlafend. Und er spricht zu Petrus: Simon, schläfst du? Konntest du nicht eine Stunde wachen?
38 Wacht und betet, damit ihr nicht in Versuchung kommt! Der Geist ist willig, aber das Fleisch ist schwach.
39 Und er ging wiederum hin, betete und sprach dieselben Worte.
40 Und als er zurückkam, fand er sie wieder schlafend; denn die Augen waren ihnen schwer geworden. Und sie wussten nicht, was sie ihm antworten sollten.
41 Und er kommt zum dritten Mal und spricht zu ihnen: Schlaft ihr noch immer und ruht? — Es ist genug! Die Stunde ist gekommen. Siehe, der Sohn des Menschen wird in die Hände der Sünder ausgeliefert.
42 Steht auf, lasst uns gehen! Siehe, der mich verrät, ist nahe.
Die Gefangennahme Jesu
43 Und sogleich, als er noch redete, erschien Judas, der einer der Zwölf war, und mit ihm eine große Schar mit Schwertern und Stöcken, [gesandt] von den obersten Priestern und den Schriftgelehrten und den Ältesten.
44 Der ihn verriet, hatte ihnen aber ein Zeichen gegeben und gesagt: Der, den ich küssen werde, der ist"s; den ergreift und führt ihn sicher ab!
45 Und als er nun kam, trat er sogleich auf ihn zu und sprach: Rabbi, Rabbi!, und küsste ihn.
46 Sie aber legten ihre Hände an ihn und nahmen ihn fest.
47 Einer aber von denen, die dabeistanden, zog das Schwert, schlug den Knecht des Hohenpriesters und hieb ihm ein Ohr ab.
48 Und Jesus begann und sprach zu ihnen: Wie gegen einen Räuber seid ihr ausgezogen mit Schwertern und Stöcken, um mich gefangen zu nehmen?
49 Täglich war ich bei euch im Tempel und lehrte, und ihr habt mich nicht ergriffen. Doch damit die Schriften erfüllt werden —!
50 Da verließen ihn alle und flohen.
51 Und ein gewisser junger Mann folgte ihm, der ein Leinengewand auf dem bloßen Leib trug; und die jungen Männer ergriffen ihn,
52 er aber ließ das Leinengewand zurück, und entblößt[d] floh er von ihnen.
Jesus vor dem Hohen Rat
53 Und sie führten Jesus ab zum Hohenpriester; und alle obersten Priester und die Ältesten und die Schriftgelehrten kamen bei ihm zusammen.
54 Und Petrus folgte ihm von ferne bis hinein in den Hof des Hohenpriesters; und er saß bei den Dienern und wärmte sich am Feuer.
55 Die obersten Priester aber und der ganze Hohe Rat suchten ein Zeugnis gegen Jesus, um ihn zu töten, und sie fanden keines.
56 Denn viele legten ein falsches Zeugnis gegen ihn ab, doch stimmten die Zeugnisse nicht überein.
57 Und es standen etliche auf, legten ein falsches Zeugnis gegen ihn ab und sprachen:
58 Wir haben ihn sagen hören: Ich will diesen mit Händen gemachten Tempel zerstören und in drei Tagen einen anderen aufbauen, der nicht mit Händen gemacht ist.
59 Aber auch so war ihr Zeugnis nicht übereinstimmend.
60 Und der Hohepriester stand auf, trat in die Mitte, fragte Jesus und sprach: Antwortest du nichts auf das, was diese gegen dich aussagen?
61 Er aber schwieg und antwortete nichts. Wieder fragte ihn der Hohepriester und sagte zu ihm: Bist du der Christus[e], der Sohn des Hochgelobten?
62 Jesus aber sprach: Ich bin"s. Und ihr werdet den Sohn des Menschen sitzen sehen zur Rechten der Macht und kommen mit den Wolken des Himmels!
63 Da zerriss der Hohepriester seine Kleider und sagte: Was brauchen wir weitere Zeugen?
64 Ihr habt die Lästerung gehört. Was meint ihr? Und sie fällten alle das Urteil, dass er des Todes schuldig sei.
65 Und etliche fingen an, ihn anzuspucken und sein Angesicht zu verhüllen und ihn mit Fäusten zu schlagen und zu ihm zu sagen: Weissage! Und die Diener schlugen ihn ins Angesicht.
Die Verleugnung durch Petrus
66 Und während Petrus unten im Hof war, kam eine von den Mägden des Hohenpriesters.
67 Und als sie Petrus sah, der sich wärmte, blickte sie ihn an und sprach: Auch du warst mit Jesus, dem Nazarener!
68 Er aber leugnete und sprach: Ich weiß nicht und verstehe auch nicht, was du sagst! Und er ging in den Vorhof hinaus, und der Hahn krähte.
69 Und als die Magd ihn sah, begann sie wieder und sprach zu den Umstehenden: Dieser ist einer von ihnen!
70 Er aber leugnete wiederum. Und ein wenig nachher sprachen die Umstehenden nochmals zu Petrus: Wahrhaftig, du bist einer von ihnen! Denn du bist ein Galiläer, und deine Sprache ist gleich.
71 Er aber fing an, [sich] zu verfluchen[f] und zu schwören: Ich kenne diesen Menschen nicht, von dem ihr redet!
72 Da krähte der Hahn zum zweiten Mal; und Petrus erinnerte sich an das Wort, das Jesus zu ihm gesagt hatte: Ehe der Hahn zweimal kräht, wirst du mich dreimal verleugnen. Und er begann zu weinen.

Complot contre Jésus-Christ
14 La fête de Pâque et des pains sans levain devait avoir lieu deux jours après. Les principaux sacrificateurs et les scribes cherchaient les moyens d’arrêter Jésus par ruse, et de le faire mourir. 2 Car ils disaient: Que ce ne soit pas pendant la fête, afin qu’il n’y ait pas de tumulte parmi le peuple.
Marie de Béthanie oint Jésus
3 Comme Jésus était à Béthanie, dans la maison de Simon le lépreux, une femme entra, pendant qu’il se trouvait à table. Elle tenait un vase d’albâtre, qui renfermait un parfum de nard pur de grand prix; et, ayant rompu le vase, elle répandit le parfum sur la tête de Jésus. 4 Quelques-uns exprimèrent entre eux leur indignation: A quoi bon perdre ce parfum? 5 On aurait pu le vendre plus de trois cents deniers, et les donner aux pauvres. Et ils s’irritaient contre cette femme. 6 Mais Jésus dit: Laissez-la. Pourquoi lui faites-vous de la peine? Elle a fait une bonne action à mon égard; 7 car vous avez toujours les pauvres avec vous[a], et vous pouvez leur faire du bien quand vous voulez, mais vous ne m’avez pas toujours. 8 Elle a fait ce qu’elle a pu; elle a d’avance embaumé mon corps pour la sépulture. 9 Je vous le dis en vérité, partout où la bonne nouvelle sera prêchée, dans le monde entier, on racontera aussi en mémoire de cette femme ce qu’elle a fait.
Judas décide de trahir Jésus
10 Judas Iscariot, l’un des douze, alla vers les principaux sacrificateurs, afin de leur livrer Jésus. 11 Après l’avoir entendu, ils furent dans la joie, et promirent de lui donner de l’argent. Et Judas cherchait une occasion favorable pour le livrer.
La dernière Pâque
12 Le premier jour des pains sans levain, où l’on immolait la Pâque, les disciples de Jésus lui dirent: Où veux-tu que nous allions te préparer la Pâque? 13 Et il envoya deux de ses disciples, et leur dit: Allez à la ville; vous rencontrerez un homme portant une cruche d’eau, suivez-le. 14 Où qu’il entre, dites au maître de la maison: Le maître dit: Où est le lieu où je mangerai la Pâque avec mes disciples? 15 Et il vous montrera une grande chambre haute, meublée et toute prête: c’est là que vous nous préparerez la Pâque. 16 Les disciples partirent, arrivèrent à la ville, et trouvèrent les choses comme il le leur avait dit; et ils préparèrent la Pâque.
17 Le soir étant venu, il arriva avec les douze. 18 Pendant qu’ils étaient à table et qu’ils mangeaient, Jésus dit: Je vous le dis en vérité, l’un de vous, qui mange avec moi, me livrera. 19 Ils commencèrent à s’attrister, et à lui dire, l’un après l’autre: Est-ce moi? 20 Il leur répondit: C’est l’un des douze, qui met avec moi la main dans le plat. 21 Le Fils de l’homme s’en va selon ce qui est écrit de lui. Mais malheur à l’homme par qui le Fils de l’homme est livré! Mieux vaudrait pour cet homme qu’il ne soit pas né.
Institution de la Cène
22 Pendant qu’ils mangeaient, Jésus prit du pain; et, après avoir rendu grâces, il le rompit, et le leur donna, en disant: Prenez, ceci est mon corps. 23 Il prit ensuite une coupe; et, après avoir rendu grâces, il la leur donna, et ils en burent tous. 24 Et il leur dit: Ceci est mon sang, le sang de l’alliance, qui est répandu pour beaucoup[b]. 25 Je vous le dis en vérité, je ne boirai plus jamais du fruit de la vigne, jusqu’au jour où je le boirai nouveau dans le royaume de Dieu.
Jésus avertit Pierre de son reniement
26 Après avoir chanté les cantiques, ils se rendirent à la montagne des Oliviers.
27 Jésus leur dit: Vous serez tous scandalisés; car il est écrit: Je frapperai le berger, et les brebis seront dispersées[c]. 28 Mais, après que je serai ressuscité, je vous précéderai en Galilée. 29 Pierre lui dit: Quand tous seraient scandalisés, je ne serai pas scandalisé. 30 Et Jésus lui dit: Je te le dis en vérité, toi, aujourd’hui, cette nuit même, avant que le coq chante deux fois, tu me renieras trois fois. 31 Mais Pierre reprit plus fortement: Quand il me faudrait mourir avec toi, je ne te renierai pas. Et tous dirent la même chose.
Agonie et arrestation de Jésus dans le jardin de Gethsémané
32 Ils allèrent ensuite dans un lieu appelé Gethsémané[d], et Jésus dit à ses disciples: Asseyez-vous ici, pendant que je prierai. 33 Il prit avec lui Pierre, Jacques et Jean, et il commença à éprouver de la frayeur et des angoisses. 34 Il leur dit: Mon âme est triste jusqu’à la mort; restez ici, et veillez. 35 Puis, ayant fait quelques pas en avant, il se jeta contre terre, et pria que, s’il était possible, cette heure s’éloigne de lui. 36 Il disait: Abba, Père, toutes choses te sont possibles, éloigne de moi cette coupe! Toutefois, non pas ce que je veux, mais ce que tu veux. 37 Et il vint vers les disciples, qu’il trouva endormis, et il dit à Pierre: Simon, tu dors! Tu n’as pu veiller une heure! 38 Veillez et priez, afin que vous ne tombiez pas en tentation; l’esprit est bien disposé, mais la chair est faible. 39 Il s’éloigna de nouveau, et fit la même prière. 40 Il revint, et les trouva encore endormis; car leurs yeux étaient appesantis. Ils ne surent que lui répondre. 41 Il revint pour la troisième fois, et leur dit: Dormez maintenant, et reposez-vous! C’est assez! L’heure est venue; voici, le Fils de l’homme est livré aux mains des pécheurs. 42 Levez-vous, allons; voici, celui qui me livre s’approche.
43 Et aussitôt, comme il parlait encore, arriva Judas, l’un des douze, et avec lui une foule armée d’épées et de bâtons, envoyée par les principaux sacrificateurs, par les scribes et par les anciens. 44 Celui qui le livrait leur avait donné ce signe: Celui à qui je donnerai un baiser, c’est lui; saisissez-le, et emmenez-le sûrement. 45 Dès qu’il fut arrivé, il s’approcha de Jésus, disant: Rabbi! Et il lui donna un baiser. 46 Alors ces gens mirent la main sur Jésus, et le saisirent.
47 Un de ceux qui étaient là, tirant l’épée, frappa le serviteur du souverain sacrificateur, et lui emporta l’oreille.
48 Jésus, prenant la parole, leur dit: Vous êtes venus, comme après un brigand, avec des épées et des bâtons, pour vous emparer de moi. 49 J’étais tous les jours parmi vous, enseignant dans le temple, et vous ne m’avez pas saisi. Mais c’est afin que les Ecritures soient accomplies.
50 Alors tous l’abandonnèrent, et prirent la fuite.
51 Un jeune homme le suivait, n’ayant sur le corps qu’un drap. On se saisit de lui; 52 mais il lâcha son vêtement, et se sauva tout nu.
Jésus comparaît devant Caïphe et le sanhédrin
53 Ils emmenèrent Jésus chez le souverain sacrificateur, où s’assemblèrent tous les principaux sacrificateurs, les anciens et les scribes. 54 Pierre le suivit de loin jusque dans l’intérieur de la cour du souverain sacrificateur; il s’assit avec les serviteurs, et il se chauffait près du feu.
55 Les principaux sacrificateurs et tout le sanhédrin cherchaient un témoignage contre Jésus, pour le faire mourir, et ils n’en trouvaient point; 56 car plusieurs rendaient de faux témoignages contre lui, mais les témoignages ne s’accordaient pas. 57 Quelques-uns se levèrent, et portèrent un faux témoignage contre lui, disant: 58 Nous l’avons entendu dire: Je détruirai ce temple fait de main d’homme, et en trois jours j’en bâtirai un autre qui ne sera pas fait de main d’homme. 59 Même sur ce point-là leur témoignage ne s’accordait pas. 60 Alors le souverain sacrificateur, se levant au milieu de l’assemblée, interrogea Jésus, et dit: Ne réponds-tu rien? Qu’est-ce que ces gens déposent contre toi? 61 Jésus garda le silence, et ne répondit rien. Le souverain sacrificateur l’interrogea de nouveau, et lui dit: Es-tu le Christ, le Fils du Dieu béni? 62 Jésus répondit: Je le suis. Et vous verrez le Fils de l’homme assis à la droite de la puissance de Dieu, et venant sur les nuées du ciel[e]. 63 Alors le souverain sacrificateur déchira ses vêtements, et dit: Qu’avons-nous encore besoin de témoins? 64 Vous avez entendu le blasphème. Que vous en semble? Tous le condamnèrent comme méritant la mort. 65 Et quelques-uns se mirent à cracher sur lui, à lui voiler le visage et à le frapper à coups de poing, en lui disant: Devine! Et les serviteurs le reçurent en lui donnant des soufflets.
Le triple reniement de Pierre
66 Pendant que Pierre était en bas dans la cour, il vint une des servantes du souverain sacrificateur. 67 Voyant Pierre qui se chauffait, elle le regarda, et lui dit: Toi aussi, tu étais avec Jésus de Nazareth. 68 Il le nia, disant: Je ne sais pas, je ne comprends pas ce que tu veux dire. Puis il sortit pour aller dans le vestibule. [Et le coq chanta. ] 69 La servante, l’ayant vu, se mit de nouveau à dire à ceux qui étaient présents: Celui-ci est de ces gens-là. Et il le nia de nouveau. 70 Peu après, ceux qui étaient présents dirent encore à Pierre: Certainement tu es de ces gens-là, car tu es Galiléen. 71 Alors il commença à faire des imprécations et à jurer: Je ne connais pas cet homme dont vous parlez. 72 Aussitôt, pour la seconde fois, le coq chanta. Et Pierre se souvint de la parole que Jésus lui avait dite: Avant que le coq chante deux fois, tu me renieras trois fois. Et en y réfléchissant, il pleurait.

Jesus Anointed at Bethany(A)(B)(C)
14 Now the Passover(D) and the Festival of Unleavened Bread were only two days away, and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were scheming to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him.(E) 2 “But not during the festival,” they said, “or the people may riot.”
3 While he was in Bethany,(F) reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head.(G)
4 Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another, “Why this waste of perfume? 5 It could have been sold for more than a year’s wages[a] and the money given to the poor.” And they rebuked her harshly.
6 “Leave her alone,” said Jesus. “Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. 7 The poor you will always have with you,[b] and you can help them any time you want.(H) But you will not always have me. 8 She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial.(I) 9 Truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world,(J) what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”
10 Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve,(K) went to the chief priests to betray Jesus to them.(L) 11 They were delighted to hear this and promised to give him money. So he watched for an opportunity to hand him over.
The Last Supper(M)(N)
12 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, when it was customary to sacrifice the Passover lamb,(O) Jesus’ disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to go and make preparations for you to eat the Passover?”
13 So he sent two of his disciples, telling them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him. 14 Say to the owner of the house he enters, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 15 He will show you a large room upstairs,(P) furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there.”
16 The disciples left, went into the city and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover.
17 When evening came, Jesus arrived with the Twelve. 18 While they were reclining at the table eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me—one who is eating with me.”
19 They were saddened, and one by one they said to him, “Surely you don’t mean me?”
20 “It is one of the Twelve,” he replied, “one who dips bread into the bowl with me.(Q) 21 The Son of Man(R) will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”
22 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it(S) and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take it; this is my body.”
23 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it.(T)
24 “This is my blood of the[c] covenant,(U) which is poured out for many,” he said to them. 25 “Truly I tell you, I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”(V)
26 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.(W)

27 “You will all fall away,” Jesus told them, “for it is written:
28 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”(Z)
29 Peter declared, “Even if all fall away, I will not.”
30 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “today—yes, tonight—before the rooster crows twice[e] you yourself will disown me three times.”(AA)
31 But Peter insisted emphatically, “Even if I have to die with you,(AB) I will never disown you.” And all the others said the same.
Gethsemane(AC)
32 They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 He took Peter, James and John(AD) along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. 34 “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,”(AE) he said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.”
35 Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour(AF) might pass from him. 36 “Abba,[f] Father,”(AG) he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup(AH) from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”(AI)
37 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour? 38 Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.(AJ) The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”(AK)
39 Once more he went away and prayed the same thing. 40 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him.
41 Returning the third time, he said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour(AL) has come. Look, the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 42 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”
Jesus Arrested(AM)
43 Just as he was speaking, Judas,(AN) one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders.
44 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.” 45 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Rabbi!”(AO) and kissed him. 46 The men seized Jesus and arrested him. 47 Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.
48 “Am I leading a rebellion,” said Jesus, “that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts,(AP) and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”(AQ) 50 Then everyone deserted him and fled.(AR)
51 A young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, was following Jesus. When they seized him, 52 he fled naked, leaving his garment behind.
Jesus Before the Sanhedrin(AS)(AT)
53 They took Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders and the teachers of the law came together. 54 Peter followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest.(AU) There he sat with the guards and warmed himself at the fire.(AV)
55 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin(AW) were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find any. 56 Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree.
57 Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him: 58 “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with human hands and in three days will build another,(AX) not made with hands.’” 59 Yet even then their testimony did not agree.
60 Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” 61 But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer.(AY)
Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”(AZ)
62 “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”(BA)
63 The high priest tore his clothes.(BB) “Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked. 64 “You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?”
They all condemned him as worthy of death.(BC) 65 Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, “Prophesy!” And the guards took him and beat him.(BD)
Peter Disowns Jesus(BE)
66 While Peter was below in the courtyard,(BF) one of the servant girls of the high priest came by. 67 When she saw Peter warming himself,(BG) she looked closely at him.
“You also were with that Nazarene, Jesus,”(BH) she said.
68 But he denied it. “I don’t know or understand what you’re talking about,”(BI) he said, and went out into the entryway.[g]
69 When the servant girl saw him there, she said again to those standing around, “This fellow is one of them.” 70 Again he denied it.(BJ)
After a little while, those standing near said to Peter, “Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.”(BK)
71 He began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know this man you’re talking about.”(BL)
72 Immediately the rooster crowed the second time.[h] Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows twice[i] you will disown me three times.”(BM) And he broke down and wept.

14 After two days was the feast of the passover, and of unleavened bread: and the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might take him by craft, and put him to death.
2 But they said, Not on the feast day, lest there be an uproar of the people.
3 And being in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at meat, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious; and she brake the box, and poured it on his head.
4 And there were some that had indignation within themselves, and said, Why was this waste of the ointment made?
5 For it might have been sold for more than three hundred pence, and have been given to the poor. And they murmured against her.
6 And Jesus said, Let her alone; why trouble ye her? she hath wrought a good work on me.
7 For ye have the poor with you always, and whensoever ye will ye may do them good: but me ye have not always.
8 She hath done what she could: she is come aforehand to anoint my body to the burying.
9 Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her.

17 And in the evening he cometh with the twelve.
18 And as they sat and did eat, Jesus said, Verily I say unto you, One of you which eateth with me shall betray me.
19 And they began to be sorrowful, and to say unto him one by one, Is it I? and another said, Is it I?
20 And he answered and said unto them, It is one of the twelve, that dippeth with me in the dish.
21 The Son of man indeed goeth, as it is written of him: but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! good were it for that man if he had never been born.
22 And as they did eat, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and brake it, and gave to them, and said, Take, eat: this is my body.
23 And he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them: and they all drank of it.
24 And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many.
25 Verily I say unto you, I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine, until that day that I drink it new in the kingdom of God.
26 And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.
27 And Jesus saith unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered.
28 But after that I am risen, I will go before you into Galilee.
29 But Peter said unto him, Although all shall be offended, yet will not I.
30 And Jesus saith unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this day, even in this night, before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice.
31 But he spake the more vehemently, If I should die with thee, I will not deny thee in any wise. Likewise also said they all.
32 And they came to a place which was named Gethsemane: and he saith to his disciples, Sit ye here, while I shall pray.
33 And he taketh with him Peter and James and John, and began to be sore amazed, and to be very heavy;
34 And saith unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death: tarry ye here, and watch.
35 And he went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him.
36 And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.
37 And he cometh, and findeth them sleeping, and saith unto Peter, Simon, sleepest thou? couldest not thou watch one hour?
38 Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak.
39 And again he went away, and prayed, and spake the same words.
40 And when he returned, he found them asleep again, (for their eyes were heavy,) neither wist they what to answer him.
41 And he cometh the third time, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: it is enough, the hour is come; behold, the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.
42 Rise up, let us go; lo, he that betrayeth me is at hand.
43 And immediately, while he yet spake, cometh Judas, one of the twelve, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.
44 And he that betrayed him had given them a token, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he; take him, and lead him away safely.
45 And as soon as he was come, he goeth straightway to him, and saith, Master, master; and kissed him.
46 And they laid their hands on him, and took him.
47 And one of them that stood by drew a sword, and smote a servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.
48 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Are ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and with staves to take me?
49 I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and ye took me not: but the scriptures must be fulfilled.
50 And they all forsook him, and fled.
51 And there followed him a certain young man, having a linen cloth cast about his naked body; and the young men laid hold on him:
52 And he left the linen cloth, and fled from them naked.
53 And they led Jesus away to the high priest: and with him were assembled all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes.
54 And Peter followed him afar off, even into the palace of the high priest: and he sat with the servants, and warmed himself at the fire.
55 And the chief priests and all the council sought for witness against Jesus to put him to death; and found none.
56 For many bare false witness against him, but their witness agreed not together.
57 And there arose certain, and bare false witness against him, saying,
58 We heard him say, I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands.
59 But neither so did their witness agree together.
60 And the high priest stood up in the midst, and asked Jesus, saying, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee?
61 But he held his peace, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, and said unto him, Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?
62 And Jesus said, I am: and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.
63 Then the high priest rent his clothes, and saith, What need we any further witnesses?
64 Ye have heard the blasphemy: what think ye? And they all condemned him to be guilty of death.
65 And some began to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to buffet him, and to say unto him, Prophesy: and the servants did strike him with the palms of their hands.
66 And as Peter was beneath in the palace, there cometh one of the maids of the high priest:
67 And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked upon him, and said, And thou also wast with Jesus of Nazareth.
68 But he denied, saying, I know not, neither understand I what thou sayest. And he went out into the porch; and the cock crew.
69 And a maid saw him again, and began to say to them that stood by, This is one of them.
70 And he denied it again. And a little after, they that stood by said again to Peter, Surely thou art one of them: for thou art a Galilaean, and thy speech agreeth thereto.
71 But he began to curse and to swear, saying, I know not this man of whom ye speak.
72 And the second time the cock crew. And Peter called to mind the word that Jesus said unto him, Before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice. And when he thought thereon, he wept.
