Streitgespräche mit den religiösen Führern Israels (Kapitel 11–12)
Jesus wird als König empfangen (Matthäus 21,1‒11; Lukas 19,29‒38; Johannes 12,12‒19)
11 Jesus war mit seinen Jüngern inzwischen in die Nähe von Jerusalem gekommen. Kurz bevor sie Betfage und Betanien erreichten, zwei Ortschaften am Ölberg, schickte Jesus zwei Jünger voraus 2 mit dem Auftrag: »Geht in das Dorf da vorne! Gleich am Ortseingang werdet ihr einen jungen Esel finden, der dort angebunden ist. Auf ihm ist noch nie jemand geritten. Bindet ihn los und bringt ihn her! 3 Sollte euch jemand fragen, was ihr da tut, dann sagt einfach: ›Der Herr braucht das Tier, aber er wird es bald wieder zurückschicken.‹«
4 Sie machten sich auf den Weg und fanden den Esel draußen auf der Straße an ein Hoftor angebunden. Sie banden ihn los; 5 aber einige Leute, die dabeistanden, fragten: »Was macht ihr denn da? Warum bindet ihr den Esel los?« 6 Sie antworteten so, wie Jesus es ihnen gesagt hatte. Da ließ man sie gewähren.
7 Die Jünger brachten den jungen Esel zu Jesus, legten ihre Mäntel auf das Tier, und er setzte sich darauf. 8 Viele Leute breiteten ihre Kleider als Teppich vor ihm aus, andere legten Zweige auf den Weg, die sie von Bäumen auf den Feldern abgerissen hatten. 9 Vor und hinter ihm drängten sich die Menschen und riefen:
»Gelobt sei Gott, und gepriesen sei, der in seinem Auftrag kommt! 10 Gesegnet sei das Königreich unseres Vorfahren David, das nun kommt! Gelobt sei Gott hoch im Himmel!«
11 So zog Jesus in Jerusalem ein. Er ging in den Tempel und sah sich dort aufmerksam um. Weil es aber schon spät geworden war, kehrte er nach kurzer Zeit wieder mit seinen zwölf Jüngern nach Betanien zurück.
Der Feigenbaum (Matthäus 21,18‒19)
12 Am nächsten Morgen, als sie Betanien verließen, hatte Jesus Hunger. 13 Da sah er von weitem einen Feigenbaum, der schon Blätter hatte. Er ging hin, um zu sehen, ob auch Früchte an ihm waren.[a] Aber er fand nichts als Blätter, denn zu dieser Jahreszeit gab es noch keine Feigen. 14 Da sagte Jesus zu dem Baum: »In Zukunft soll nie wieder jemand von dir eine Frucht essen!« Auch seine Jünger hörten es.
Jesus jagt die Händler aus dem Tempel (Matthäus 21,12‒17; Lukas 19,45‒48; Johannes 2,13‒17)
15 Sie kamen nach Jerusalem, und Jesus ging in den Tempel. Dort jagte er die Händler und Käufer hinaus; die Tische der Geldwechsler und die Stände der Taubenverkäufer stieß er um. 16 Er duldete auch nicht, dass jemand irgendetwas durch den Tempelvorhof trug. 17 Zur Erklärung rief Jesus den Menschen zu: »Ihr wisst doch, was Gott in der Heiligen Schrift sagt: ›Mein Haus soll für alle Völker ein Ort des Gebets sein‹,[b] ihr aber habt eine Räuberhöhle daraus gemacht!«
18 Als die obersten Priester und die Schriftgelehrten von diesen Ereignissen hörten, überlegten sie, wie sie Jesus umbringen könnten. Sie fürchteten seinen Einfluss, denn seine Worte hinterließen einen tiefen Eindruck bei den Menschen. 19 Am Abend verließ Jesus mit seinen Jüngern die Stadt.
Von der Kraft des Glaubens (Matthäus 21,20‒22)
20 Als sie am nächsten Morgen wieder an dem Feigenbaum vorbeikamen, sahen sie, dass er völlig abgestorben war. 21 Petrus erinnerte sich und sagte: »Rabbi, sieh doch! Der Baum, den du verflucht hast, ist vertrocknet.« 22 Da antwortete Jesus: »Ihr müsst Gott ganz vertrauen! 23 Ich versichere euch: Wenn ihr glaubt und nicht im Geringsten daran zweifelt, dass es wirklich geschieht, könnt ihr zu diesem Berg sagen: ›Hebe dich von der Stelle und stürze dich ins Meer!‹, und es wird geschehen.
24 Deshalb sage ich euch: Um was ihr auch bittet – glaubt fest, dass ihr es schon bekommen habt, und Gott wird es euch geben! 25 Aber wenn ihr ihn um etwas bitten wollt, sollt ihr vorher den Menschen vergeben, denen ihr etwas vorzuwerfen habt. Dann wird euch der Vater im Himmel eure Schuld auch vergeben.[c]«
Die Frage nach der Vollmacht von Jesus (Matthäus 21,23‒27; Lukas 20,1‒8)
27 Inzwischen waren sie wieder in Jerusalem angelangt. Als Jesus im Tempel umherging, kamen die obersten Priester, die Schriftgelehrten und die führenden Männer des Volkes zu ihm 28 und stellten ihn zur Rede: »Woher nimmst du dir das Recht, so aufzutreten? Wer gab dir die Vollmacht dazu?«
29 Jesus erwiderte: »Ich will euch eine Gegenfrage stellen. Beantwortet sie mir, dann werde ich euch sagen, wer mir die Vollmacht gegeben hat. 30 War Johannes der Täufer von Gott beauftragt zu taufen oder nicht? Was meint ihr?«
31 Sie überlegten: »Wenn wir antworten: ›Gott hat ihn gesandt‹, dann wird er fragen: ›Warum habt ihr ihm dann nicht geglaubt?‹ 32 Was ist, wenn wir bestreiten, dass Gott ihn gesandt hat?« Doch sie befürchteten, deswegen Ärger mit dem Volk zu bekommen. Denn alle waren davon überzeugt, dass Johannes ein Prophet war.
33 So antworteten sie schließlich: »Wir wissen es nicht!« Darauf entgegnete Jesus: »Dann sage ich euch auch nicht, wer mir die Vollmacht gegeben hat, all diese Dinge zu tun.«

Jezus komt in Jeruzalem aan en bezoekt de tempel
11 Zij kwamen in de buurt van Jeruzalem, bij Bethfagé en Bethanië, op de helling van de Olijfberg. 2 Daar stuurde Jezus twee van zijn leerlingen vooruit. ‘Ga naar het dorp,’ zei Hij. ‘Als jullie er binnenkomen, zul je een veulen zien waar nog nooit iemand op heeft gereden. Het staat vastgebonden. 3 Maak het los en neem het mee. Als iemand vraagt waarom jullie dat doen, zeg dan: De Here heeft het nodig. Maar we brengen het gauw weer terug.’ 4 Zij gingen naar het dorp en zagen het veulen meteen. Het stond op straat, vastgebonden bij de deur van een huis. Zij maakten het los. 5 ‘Wat moet dat daar?’ riepen een paar mensen die het zagen. ‘Is dat veulen soms van u?’ 6 ‘Nee,’ zeiden de leerlingen, ‘maar de Here heeft het nodig. Wij brengen het gauw weer terug.’ Toen mochten zij het meenemen. 7 Zij brachten het veulen bij Jezus, legden hun jassen erop en Hij ging erop zitten. 8 Vele mensen spreidden nu voor Hem hun jassen op de weg uit. Anderen legden takken met bladeren voor Hem neer die zij van de bomen hadden gerukt. 9 Jezus reed midden tussen een zee van mensen die riepen: ‘Hosanna! Gezegend is Hij die komt in de naam van de Here! 10 Eer voor het nieuwe koninkrijk van onze vader David!’ En: ‘Prijs Hem tot in de hoogste hemelen!’
11 Zo reed Hij Jeruzalem binnen. Hij ging naar de tempel en bekeek daar alles. Daarna vertrok Hij met de twaalf leerlingen naar Bethanië, omdat het al laat was geworden. 12 Toen zij de volgende morgen uit Bethanië vertrokken, had Jezus honger. 13 In de verte zag Hij een vijgeboom die in blad stond. Hij liep ernaar toe om te zien of er vijgen aanzaten, maar er zaten alleen maar bladeren aan. Het was nog niet de tijd voor vijgen. 14 De leerlingen hoorden Hem tegen de boom zeggen: ‘Er zullen aan jou nooit meer vruchten komen.’
15 Zij kwamen in Jeruzalem en Jezus ging meteen naar de tempel. Hij begon de handelaars en hun klanten van het tempelplein te jagen, gooide de tafels van de geldwisselaars en de kraampjes van de duivenhandelaars omver en 16 stuurde iedereen die met allerlei spullen het plein op kwam terug. 17 ‘Luister goed, allemaal,’ zei Hij. ‘Heeft de profeet Jesaja niet geschreven dat Gods huis een huis van gebed moet zijn voor alle volken? Maar wat hebben jullie ervan gemaakt? Een rovershol!’ 18 De leidende priesters en bijbelgeleerden hoorden dit en probeerden een manier te vinden om Hem uit de weg te ruimen. Zij zagen wel dat iedereen diep onder de indruk was van zijn woorden en zij waren bang dat Hij meer invloed zou krijgen dan zij.
19 Zoals gewoonlijk ging Hij ʼs avonds met zijn leerlingen de stad uit. 20 De volgende morgen kwamen zij weer langs de vijgeboom waar Jezus geen vruchten aan had gevonden. Zij zagen dat hij helemaal verdord was. 21 Petrus dacht aan wat Jezus de vorige dag tegen de boom had gezegd. ‘Kijk eens, Meester,’ riep hij uit, ‘dit is de boom die U gisteren hebt vervloekt. Hij is helemaal dor!’ 22 Jezus zei tegen de leerlingen: ‘Heb toch geloof in God! 23 Ik verzeker jullie: als je gelooft en je tegen deze berg zou zeggen: “Ga hier vandaan en val in de zee,” dan gebeurt het absoluut! Maar denk eraan: dat kan alleen als je gelooft dat het zal gaan zoals jij zegt en er geen spoor van twijfel in je hart is. 24 Wat je in het gebed ook vraagt, je krijgt het als je gelooft dat je het al ontvangen hebt. 25 Wanneer je staat te bidden en je hebt iets tegen iemand, moet je het hem vergeven. Dan zal je hemelse Vader ook jou vergeven wat jij verkeerd hebt gedaan. 26 Als je echter niet vergeeft, zal ook je Vader in de hemel jouw zonden niet vergeven.’
27 Zij kwamen in Jeruzalem. Terwijl Hij over het tempelplein wandelde, kwamen enkele leidende priesters, bijbelgeleerden en oudsten naar Hem toe 28 en vroegen Hem: ‘Mag U dit alles wel doen? Wie heeft U daar de bevoegdheid voor gegeven?’ 29 ‘Ik heb ook een vraag,’ zei Jezus, ‘geef Mij daar eerst eens antwoord op. Dan zal Ik u vertellen wie Mij de bevoegdheid geeft dit allemaal te doen. 30 Zeg eens: doopte Johannes in opdracht van God of niet?’ 31 Zij wisten geen raad met deze vraag en zeiden tegen elkaar: ‘Als we ja zeggen, zal Hij vragen: “Waarom hebben jullie hem dan niet geloofd?” 32 Maar we kunnen ook niet nee zeggen, want dan krijgen we last met de mensen. Die zijn er allemaal van overtuigd dat Johannes de Doper een profeet was.’ 33 Daarom zeiden zij maar dat ze het niet wisten. ‘Wel,’ antwoordde Jezus, ‘dan vertel Ik u ook niet wie Mij het recht geeft dit allemaal te doen.’

Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King(A)(B)
11 As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany(C) at the Mount of Olives,(D) Jesus sent two of his disciples, 2 saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden.(E) Untie it and bring it here. 3 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.’”
4 They went and found a colt outside in the street, tied at a doorway.(F) As they untied it, 5 some people standing there asked, “What are you doing, untying that colt?” 6 They answered as Jesus had told them to, and the people let them go. 7 When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it. 8 Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. 9 Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted,
“Hosanna![a]”
10 “Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!”
“Hosanna in the highest heaven!”(H)
11 Jesus entered Jerusalem and went into the temple courts. He looked around at everything, but since it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the Twelve.(I)
Jesus Curses a Fig Tree and Clears the Temple Courts(J)(K)(L)
12 The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry. 13 Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs.(M) 14 Then he said to the tree, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard him say it.
15 On reaching Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple courts and began driving out those who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves, 16 and would not allow anyone to carry merchandise through the temple courts. 17 And as he taught them, he said, “Is it not written: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations’[c]?(N) But you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’[d]”(O)
18 The chief priests and the teachers of the law heard this and began looking for a way to kill him, for they feared him,(P) because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching.(Q)
19 When evening came, Jesus and his disciples[e] went out of the city.(R)
20 In the morning, as they went along, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots. 21 Peter remembered and said to Jesus, “Rabbi,(S) look! The fig tree you cursed has withered!”
22 “Have faith in God,” Jesus answered. 23 “Truly[f] I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them.(T) 24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.(U) 25 And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.”(V) [26] [g]
The Authority of Jesus Questioned(W)
27 They arrived again in Jerusalem, and while Jesus was walking in the temple courts, the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders came to him. 28 “By what authority are you doing these things?” they asked. “And who gave you authority to do this?”
29 Jesus replied, “I will ask you one question. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. 30 John’s baptism—was it from heaven, or of human origin? Tell me!”
31 They discussed it among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Then why didn’t you believe him?’ 32 But if we say, ‘Of human origin’ …” (They feared the people, for everyone held that John really was a prophet.)(X)
33 So they answered Jesus, “We don’t know.”
Jesus said, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.”

3 And if any man say unto you, Why do ye this? say ye that the Lord hath need of him; and straightway he will send him hither.

17 And he taught, saying unto them, Is it not written, My house shall be called of all nations the house of prayer? but ye have made it a den of thieves.
18 And the scribes and chief priests heard it, and sought how they might destroy him: for they feared him, because all the people was astonished at his doctrine.
19 And when even was come, he went out of the city.
20 And in the morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots.
21 And Peter calling to remembrance saith unto him, Master, behold, the fig tree which thou cursedst is withered away.
22 And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God.
23 For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.
24 Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.
25 And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.
26 But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.
27 And they come again to Jerusalem: and as he was walking in the temple, there come to him the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders,
28 And say unto him, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority to do these things?
29 And Jesus answered and said unto them, I will also ask of you one question, and answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things.
30 The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men? answer me.
31 And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then did ye not believe him?
32 But if we shall say, Of men; they feared the people: for all men counted John, that he was a prophet indeed.
33 And they answered and said unto Jesus, We cannot tell. And Jesus answering saith unto them, Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things.
