A Girl Restored to Life and a Woman Healed^(A)

^21 (B)Now when Jesus had crossed over again by boat to the other side, a great multitude gathered to Him; and He was by the sea. ^22 (C)And behold, one of the rulers of the synagogue came, Jairus by name. And when he saw Him, he fell at His feet ²³ and begged Him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter lies at the point of death. Come and ^(D)lay Your hands on her, that she may be healed, and she will live.” ²⁴ So Jesus went with him, and a great multitude followed Him and thronged Him.

²⁵ Now a certain woman ^(E)had a flow of blood for twelve years, ²⁶ and had suffered many things from many physicians. She had spent all that she had and was no better, but rather grew worse. ²⁷ When she heard about Jesus, she came behind Him in the crowd and ^(F)touched His garment. ²⁸ For she said, “If only I may touch His clothes, I shall be made well.”

²⁹ Immediately the fountain of her blood was dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of the ^[a]affliction. ³⁰ And Jesus, immediately knowing in Himself that ^(G)power had gone out of Him, turned around in the crowd and said, “Who touched My clothes?”

³¹ But His disciples said to Him, “You see the multitude thronging You, and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’ ”

³² And He looked around to see her who had done this thing. ³³ But the woman, ^(H)fearing and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth. ³⁴ And He said to her, “Daughter, ^(I)your faith has made you well. ^(J)Go in peace, and be healed of your affliction.”

^35 (K)While He was still speaking, some came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house who said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?”

³⁶ As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, He said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not be afraid; only ^(L)believe.” ³⁷ And He permitted no one to follow Him except Peter, James, and John the brother of James. ³⁸ Then He came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and saw ^[b]a tumult and those who ^(M)wept and wailed loudly. ³⁹ When He came in, He said to them, “Why make this commotion and weep? The child is not dead, but ^(N)sleeping.”

⁴⁰ And they ridiculed Him. ^(O)But when He had put them all outside, He took the father and the mother of the child, and those who were with Him, and entered where the child was lying. ⁴¹ Then He took the child by the hand, and said to her, “Talitha, cumi,” which is translated, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” ⁴² Immediately the girl arose and walked, for she was twelve years of age. And they were ^(P)overcome with great amazement. ⁴³ But ^(Q)He commanded them strictly that no one should know it, and said that something should be given her to eat.

^13 (A)Do you not know that those who minister the holy things eat of the things of the ^(B)temple, and those who serve at the altar partake of the offerings of the altar? ¹⁴ Even so ^(C)the Lord has commanded ^(D)that those who preach the gospel should live from the gospel.

¹⁵ But ^(E)I have used none of these things, nor have I written these things that it should be done so to me; for ^(F)it would be better for me to die than that anyone should make my boasting void. ¹⁶ For if I preach the gospel, I have nothing to boast of, for ^(G)necessity is laid upon me; yes, woe is me if I do not preach the gospel! ¹⁷ For if I do this willingly, ^(H)I have a reward; but if against my will, ^(I)I have been entrusted with a stewardship. ¹⁸ What is my reward then? That ^(J)when I preach the gospel, I may present the gospel ^[a]of Christ without charge, that I ^(K)may not abuse my authority in the gospel.

Serving All Men

¹⁹ For though I am ^(L)free from all men, ^(M)I have made myself a servant to all, ^(N)that I might win the more; ²⁰ and ^(O)to the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might win Jews; to those who are under the law, as under the ^[b]law, that I might win those who are under the law; ^21 (P)to ^(Q)those who are without law, as without law ^(R)(not being without ^[c]law toward God, but under ^[d]law toward Christ), that I might win those who are without law; ^22 (S)to the weak I became ^[e]as weak, that I might win the weak. ^(T)I have become all things to all men, ^(U)that I might by all means save some. ²³ Now this I do for the gospel’s sake, that I may be partaker of it with you.

Striving for a Crown

²⁴ Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? ^(V)Run in such a way that you may ^[f]obtain it. ²⁵ And everyone who competes for the prize ^[g]is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for ^(W)an imperishable crown. ²⁶ Therefore I run thus: ^(X)not with uncertainty. Thus I fight: not as one who beats the air. ^27 (Y)But I discipline my body and ^(Z)bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become ^(AA)disqualified.

Deborah

4 When Ehud was dead, ^(A)the children of Israel again did ^(B)evil in the sight of the Lord. ² So the Lord ^(C)sold them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan, who reigned in ^(D)Hazor. The commander of his army was ^(E)Sisera, who dwelt in ^(F)Harosheth Hagoyim. ³ And the children of Israel cried out to the Lord; for Jabin had nine hundred ^(G)chariots of iron, and for twenty years ^(H)he had harshly oppressed the children of Israel.

⁴ Now Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, was judging Israel at that time. ^5 (I)And she would sit under the palm tree of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in the mountains of Ephraim. And the children of Israel came up to her for judgment. ⁶ Then she sent and called for ^(J)Barak the son of Abinoam from ^(K)Kedesh in Naphtali, and said to him, “Has not the Lord God of Israel commanded, ‘Go and ^[a]deploy troops at Mount ^(L)Tabor; take with you ten thousand men of the sons of Naphtali and of the sons of Zebulun; ⁷ and against you ^(M)I will deploy Sisera, the commander of Jabin’s army, with his chariots and his multitude at the ^(N)River Kishon; and I will ^[b]deliver him into your hand’?”

⁸ And Barak said to her, “If you will go with me, then I will go; but if you will not go with me, I will not go!”

⁹ So she said, “I will surely go with you; nevertheless there will be no glory for you in the journey you are taking, for the Lord will ^(O)sell Sisera into the hand of a woman.” Then Deborah arose and went with Barak to Kedesh. ¹⁰ And Barak called ^(P)Zebulun and Naphtali to Kedesh; he went up with ten thousand men ^(Q)under^[c] his command, and Deborah went up with him.

¹¹ Now Heber ^(R)the Kenite, of the children of ^(S)Hobab the father-in-law of Moses, had separated himself from the Kenites and pitched his tent near the terebinth tree at Zaanaim, ^(T)which is beside Kedesh.

¹² And they reported to Sisera that Barak the son of Abinoam had gone up to Mount Tabor. ¹³ So Sisera gathered together all his chariots, nine hundred chariots of iron, and all the people who were with him, from Harosheth Hagoyim to the River Kishon.

¹⁴ Then Deborah said to Barak, ^[d]“Up! For this is the day in which the Lord has delivered Sisera into your hand. ^(U)Has not the Lord gone out before you?” So Barak went down from Mount Tabor with ten thousand men following him. ¹⁵ And the Lord routed Sisera and all his chariots and all his army with the edge of the sword before Barak; and Sisera alighted from his chariot and fled away on foot. ¹⁶ But Barak pursued the chariots and the army as far as Harosheth Hagoyim, and all the army of Sisera fell by the edge of the sword; not a man was ^(V)left.

¹⁷ However, Sisera had fled away on foot to the tent of ^(W)Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite; for there was peace between Jabin king of Hazor and the house of Heber the Kenite. ¹⁸ And Jael went out to meet Sisera, and said to him, “Turn aside, my lord, turn aside to me; do not fear.” And when he had turned aside with her into the tent, she covered him with a ^[e]blanket.

¹⁹ Then he said to her, “Please give me a little water to drink, for I am thirsty.” So she opened ^(X)a jug of milk, gave him a drink, and covered him. ²⁰ And he said to her, “Stand at the door of the tent, and if any man comes and inquires of you, and says, ‘Is there any man here?’ you shall say, ‘No.’ ”

²¹ Then Jael, Heber’s wife, ^(Y)took a tent peg and took a hammer in her hand, and went softly to him and drove the peg into his temple, and it went down into the ground; for he was fast asleep and weary. So he died. ²² And then, as Barak pursued Sisera, Jael came out to meet him, and said to him, “Come, I will show you the man whom you seek.” And when he went into her tent, there lay Sisera, dead with the peg in his temple.

²³ So on that day God subdued Jabin king of Canaan in the presence of the children of Israel. ²⁴ And the hand of the children of Israel grew stronger and stronger against Jabin king of Canaan, until they had destroyed Jabin king of Canaan.

The Song of Deborah

5 Then Deborah and Barak the son of Abinoam ^(Z)sang on that day, saying:

So the land had rest for forty years.
