Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath(A)

23 (B)Now it happened that He went through the grainfields on the Sabbath; and as they went His disciples began (C)to pluck the heads of grain. 24 And the Pharisees said to Him, “Look, why do they do what is (D)not lawful on the Sabbath?”

25 But He said to them, “Have you never read (E)what David did when he was in need and hungry, he and those with him: 26 how he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the showbread, (F)which is not lawful to eat except for the priests, and also gave some to those who were with him?”

27 And He said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the (G)Sabbath. 28 Therefore (H)the Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath.”

Healing on the Sabbath(I)

And (J)He entered the synagogue again, and a man was there who had a withered hand. So they (K)watched Him closely, whether He would (L)heal him on the Sabbath, so that they might [a]accuse Him. And He said to the man who had the withered hand, [b]“Step forward.” Then He said to them, “Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?” But they kept silent. And when He had looked around at them with anger, being grieved by the (M)hardness of their hearts, He said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” And he stretched it out, and his hand was restored [c]as whole as the other. (N)Then the Pharisees went out and immediately plotted with (O)the Herodians against Him, how they might destroy Him.

26 Then God said, (A)“Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; (B)let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over [a]all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 So God created man (C)in His own image; in the image of God He created him; (D)male and female He created them.

(A)“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. (B)Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the (C)seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, (D)nor your stranger who is within your gates. 11 For (E)in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. 14 (A)You shall keep the Sabbath, therefore, for it is holy to you. Everyone who [a]profanes it shall surely be put to death; for (B)whoever does any work on it, that person shall be cut off from among his people. 15 Work shall be done for (C)six days, but the (D)seventh is the Sabbath of rest, holy to the Lord. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death. 16 Therefore the children of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, to observe the Sabbath throughout their generations as a perpetual covenant. 17 It is (E)a sign between Me and the children of Israel forever; for (F)in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day He rested and was refreshed.’ ”

A Man with Dropsy Healed on the Sabbath

14 Now it happened, as He went into the house of one of the rulers of the Pharisees to eat bread on the Sabbath, that they watched Him closely. And behold, there was a certain man before Him who had dropsy. And Jesus, answering, spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, (A)“Is it lawful to heal on the [a]Sabbath?”

But they kept silent. And He took him and healed him, and let him go. Then He answered them, saying, (B)“Which of you, having a [b]donkey or an ox that has fallen into a pit, will not immediately pull him out on the Sabbath day?” And they could not answer Him regarding these things.
