^40 (A)There were also women looking on ^(B)from afar, among whom were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the Less and of Joses, and Salome, ⁴¹ who also ^(C)followed Him and ministered to Him when He was in Galilee, and many other women who came up with Him to Jerusalem.

Jesus Buried in Joseph’s Tomb^(D)

^42 (E)Now when evening had come, because it was the Preparation Day, that is, the day before the Sabbath, ⁴³ Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent council member, who ^(F)was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, coming and taking courage, went in to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. ⁴⁴ Pilate marveled that He was already dead; and summoning the centurion, he asked him if He had been dead for some time. ⁴⁵ So when he found out from the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph. ^46 (G)Then he bought fine linen, took Him down, and wrapped Him in the linen. And he laid Him in a tomb which had been hewn out of the rock, and rolled a stone against the door of the tomb. ⁴⁷ And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses observed where He was laid.

He Is Risen^(H)

16 Now ^(I)when the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome ^(J)bought spices, that they might come and anoint Him. ^2 (K)Very early in the morning, on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen. ³ And they said among themselves, “Who will roll away the stone from the door of the tomb for us?” ⁴ But when they looked up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away—for it was very large. ^5 (L)And entering the tomb, they saw a young man clothed in a long white robe sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed.

^6 (M)But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He is risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid Him. ⁷ But go, tell His disciples—and Peter—that He is going ^[a]before you into Galilee; there you will see Him, ^(N)as He said to you.”

⁸ So they went out ^[b]quickly and fled from the tomb, for they trembled and were amazed. ^(O)And they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

Mary Magdalene Sees the Risen Lord^(P)

^9 [c]Now when He rose early on the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, ^(Q)out of whom He had cast seven demons. ^10 (R)She went and told those who had been with Him, as they mourned and wept. ^11 (S)And when they heard that He was alive and had been seen by her, they did not believe.

Jesus Appears to Two Disciples^(T)

¹² After that, He appeared in another form ^(U)to two of them as they walked and went into the country. ¹³ And they went and told it to the rest, but they did not believe them either.

The Great Commission^(V)

^14 (W)Later He appeared to the eleven as they sat at the table; and He rebuked their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who had seen Him after He had risen. ^15 (X)And He said to them, “Go into all the world ^(Y)and preach the gospel to every creature. ^16 (Z)He who believes and is baptized will be saved; ^(AA)but he who does not believe will be condemned. ¹⁷ And these ^(AB)signs will follow those who ^[d]believe: ^(AC)In My name they will cast out demons; ^(AD)they will speak with new tongues; ^18 (AE)they^[e] will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; ^(AF)they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

Christ Ascends to God’s Right Hand^(AG)

¹⁹ So then, ^(AH)after the Lord had spoken to them, He was ^(AI)received up into heaven, and ^(AJ)sat down at the right hand of God. ²⁰ And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them ^(AK)and confirming the word through the accompanying signs. Amen.

^31 (A)For He taught His disciples and said to them, “The Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of men, and they will ^(B)kill Him. And after He is killed, He will ^(C)rise the third day.” ³² But they ^(D)did not understand this saying, and were afraid to ask Him.

³³ They will scourge Him and kill Him. And the third day He will rise again.”

^34 (A)But they understood none of these things; this saying was hidden from them, and they did not know the things which were spoken.

^9 (A)Then they returned from the tomb and told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. ¹⁰ It was Mary Magdalene, ^(B)Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them, who told these things to the apostles. ^11 (C)And their words seemed to them like ^[a]idle tales, and they did not believe them.

⁴⁵ And ^(A)He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures.

⁴⁶ Then He said to them, ^(B)“Thus it is written, ^[a]and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, ⁴⁷ and that repentance and ^(C)remission of sins should be preached in His name ^(D)to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. ⁴⁸ And ^(E)you are witnesses of these things.

The Empty Tomb^(A)

20 Now the ^(B)first day of the week Mary Magdalene went to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the ^(C)stone had been taken away from the tomb. ² Then she ran and came to Simon Peter, and to the ^(D)other disciple, ^(E)whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him.”

⁸ Then the ^(A)other disciple, who came to the tomb first, went in also; and he saw and believed. ⁹ For as yet they did not ^[a]know the ^(B)Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead.
