Betrayal and Arrest in Gethsemane(A)

43 (B)And immediately, while He was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, with a great multitude with swords and clubs, came from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. 44 Now His betrayer had given them a signal, saying, “Whomever I (C)kiss, He is the One; seize Him and lead Him away safely.”

45 As soon as he had come, immediately he went up to Him and said to Him, “Rabbi, Rabbi!” and kissed Him.

46 Then they laid their hands on Him and took Him. 47 And one of those who stood by drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.

48 (D)Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs to take Me? 49 I was daily with you in the temple (E)teaching, and you did not seize Me. But (F)the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”

50 (G)Then they all forsook Him and fled.

A Young Man Flees Naked

51 Now a certain young man followed Him, having a linen cloth thrown around his naked body. And the young men laid hold of him, 52 and he left the linen cloth and fled from them naked.

Jesus Faces the Sanhedrin(H)

53 (I)And they led Jesus away to the high priest; and with him were (J)assembled all the (K)chief priests, the elders, and the scribes. 54 But (L)Peter followed Him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. And he sat with the servants and warmed himself at the fire.

55 (M)Now the chief priests and all the council sought testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, but found none. 56 For many bore (N)false witness against Him, but their testimonies [a]did not agree.

57 Then some rose up and bore false witness against Him, saying, 58 “We heard Him say, (O)‘I will destroy this temple made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands.’ ” 59 But not even then did their testimony agree.

60 (P)And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, saying, “Do You answer nothing? What is it these men testify against You?” 61 But (Q)He kept silent and answered nothing.

(R)Again the high priest asked Him, saying to Him, “Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?”

62 Jesus said, “I am. (S)And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.”

63 Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, “What further need do we have of witnesses? 64 You have heard the (T)blasphemy! What do you think?”

And they all condemned Him to be deserving of (U)death.

65 Then some began to (V)spit on Him, and to blindfold Him, and to beat Him, and to say to Him, “Prophesy!” And the officers [b]struck Him with the palms of their hands.

Peter Denies Jesus, and Weeps(W)

66 (X)Now as Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came. 67 And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, “You also were with (Y)Jesus of Nazareth.”

68 But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you are saying.” And he went out on the porch, and a rooster crowed.

69 (Z)And the servant girl saw him again, and began to say to those who stood by, “This is one of them.” 70 But he denied it again.

(AA)And a little later those who stood by said to Peter again, “Surely you are one of them; (AB)for you are a Galilean, [c]and your [d]speech shows it.

71 Then he began to curse and swear, “I do not know this Man of whom you speak!”

72 (AC)A second time the rooster crowed. Then Peter called to mind the word that Jesus had said to him, “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” And when he thought about it, he wept.

Jesus Arrested(A)

43 Just as he was speaking, Judas,(B) one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders.

44 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.” 45 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Rabbi!”(C) and kissed him. 46 The men seized Jesus and arrested him. 47 Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.

48 “Am I leading a rebellion,” said Jesus, “that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts,(D) and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”(E) 50 Then everyone deserted him and fled.(F)

51 A young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, was following Jesus. When they seized him, 52 he fled naked, leaving his garment behind.

Jesus Before the Sanhedrin(G)(H)

53 They took Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders and the teachers of the law came together. 54 Peter followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest.(I) There he sat with the guards and warmed himself at the fire.(J)

55 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin(K) were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find any. 56 Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree.

57 Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him: 58 “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with human hands and in three days will build another,(L) not made with hands.’” 59 Yet even then their testimony did not agree.

60 Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” 61 But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer.(M)

Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”(N)

62 “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”(O)

63 The high priest tore his clothes.(P) “Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked. 64 “You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?”

They all condemned him as worthy of death.(Q) 65 Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, “Prophesy!” And the guards took him and beat him.(R)

Peter Disowns Jesus(S)

66 While Peter was below in the courtyard,(T) one of the servant girls of the high priest came by. 67 When she saw Peter warming himself,(U) she looked closely at him.

“You also were with that Nazarene, Jesus,”(V) she said.

68 But he denied it. “I don’t know or understand what you’re talking about,”(W) he said, and went out into the entryway.[a]

69 When the servant girl saw him there, she said again to those standing around, “This fellow is one of them.” 70 Again he denied it.(X)

After a little while, those standing near said to Peter, “Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.”(Y)

71 He began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know this man you’re talking about.”(Z)

72 Immediately the rooster crowed the second time.[b] Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows twice[c] you will disown me three times.”(AA) And he broke down and wept.
