22 Jesus replied, “Have faith in God [constantly]. 23 I assure you and most solemnly say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea!’ and [a]does not doubt in his heart [in God’s unlimited power], but believes that what he says is going to take place, it will be done for him [in accordance with God’s will].(A) 24 For this reason I am telling you, whatever things you ask for in prayer [in accordance with God’s will], believe [with confident trust] that you have received them, and they will be given to you. 25 Whenever you [b]stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him [drop the issue, let it go], so that your Father who is in heaven will also forgive you your transgressions and wrongdoings [against Him and others]. 26 [c][But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your transgressions.”]

Footnotes

  1. Mark 11:23 Jesus used this moment to emphasize to the disciples that a person’s confident, abiding faith combined with God’s power can produce absolutely amazing results, if the request is in harmony with God’s will. God is fully capable of doing that which man regards as impossible (cf 14:36; James 4:3).
  2. Mark 11:25 Standing was a common posture for prayer among the Jews (see Matt 6:5).
  3. Mark 11:26 Early mss do not contain this verse.

22 Jesus replied to them, “Have faith in God.(A) 23 I assure you:(B) If anyone says to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt(C) in his heart, but believes(D) that what he says will happen, it will be done for him.(E) 24 Therefore I tell you, all the things you pray(F) and ask for(G)—believe that you have received[a](H) them, and you will have them. 25 And whenever you stand(I) praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive(J) him, so that your Father(K) in heaven(L) will also forgive(M) you your wrongdoing. [26 But if you don’t forgive, neither will your Father in heaven(N) forgive your wrongdoing.]”[b][c]

  1. Mark 11:24 Some mss read you receive; other mss read you will receive
  2. Mark 11:26 Other mss omit bracketed text
  3. Mark 11:26 These are the only uses of this word in Mk. It means “the violation of the Law” or “stepping over a boundary” or “departing from the path” or “trespass.”

22 “Have faith in God,” Jesus answered. 23 “Truly[a] I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them.(A) 24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.(B) 25 And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.”(C) [26] [b]

Footnotes

  1. Mark 11:23 Some early manuscripts “If you have faith in God,” Jesus answered, 23 “truly
  2. Mark 11:26 Some manuscripts include here words similar to Matt. 6:15.

22-25 Jesus was matter-of-fact: “Embrace this God-life. Really embrace it, and nothing will be too much for you. This mountain, for instance: Just say, ‘Go jump in the lake’—no shuffling or hemming and hawing—and it’s as good as done. That’s why I urge you to pray for absolutely everything, ranging from small to large. Include everything as you embrace this God-life, and you’ll get God’s everything. And when you assume the posture of prayer, remember that it’s not all asking. If you have anything against someone, forgive—only then will your heavenly Father be inclined to also wipe your slate clean of sins.”
