9 Then Jesus said to the people, “I tell you the truth, some people standing here will not ·die [L taste death] before they see the kingdom of God ·come [arrive] with power.” [C “Seeing the kingdom of God” may refer to the Transfiguration that follows (9:1–8), Jesus’ resurrection, or the destruction of Jerusalem in ad 70.]
The Transfiguration on the Mountain(A)
2 Six days later, Jesus took Peter, James, and John [L and led them] up on a high mountain by themselves. ·While they watched [In their presence; In front of them], Jesus’ appearance was ·changed [transformed; T transfigured]. 3 His clothes became shining white, whiter than any ·person [launderer on earth] could ·make them [bleach them]. 4 Then Elijah and Moses appeared to them, talking with Jesus. [C God had given the Law through Moses, and Elijah was an important prophet (see 6:1); together they signify that Jesus fulfills the OT.]
5 Peter said to Jesus, “·Teacher [L Rabbi], it is good that we are here. Let us make three ·tents [shelters; shrines; tabernacles; Lev. 23:42]—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” [C Perhaps Peter wanted to prolong their stay or to commemorate their visit.] 6 Peter did not know what to say, because he and the others were so frightened.
7 Then a cloud came and ·covered [overshadowed; Ex. 24:15] them, and a voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my ·Son, whom I love [dearly loved Son; Ps. 2:7; Gen. 22:2; Mark 1:11]. Listen to him [Deut. 18:15; Acts 3:22]!”
8 Suddenly Peter, James, and John looked around, but they saw only Jesus there alone with them.
9 As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus ·commanded [instructed] them not to tell anyone about what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead.
10 So they ·obeyed Jesus [kept this statement/matter to themselves], but they discussed what he meant about rising from the dead.
11 Then they asked Jesus, “Why do the ·teachers of the law [scribes] say that Elijah must come first [Mal. 3:1; 4:5]?”
12 Jesus answered, “·They are right to say that Elijah must come first and [L Elijah is indeed coming, and he will] ·make everything the way it should be [restore/prepare everything]. But why does the Scripture say that the Son of Man will suffer much and ·that people will treat him as if he were nothing [be despised; be treated with contempt; be rejected; Is. 52:13—53:12]? 13 [L But] I tell you that Elijah has already come. And ·people [L they] did to him whatever they wanted to do, just as ·the Scriptures said it would happen [it is written about him].”
Jesus Heals a Sick Boy(B)
14 When Jesus, Peter, James, and John came back to the other ·followers [disciples], they saw a great crowd around them and the ·teachers of the law [scribes] arguing with them. 15 But as soon as the crowd saw Jesus, the people were ·surprised [amazed] and ran to welcome him.
16 Jesus asked, “What are you arguing about?”
17 A man [in the crowd] answered, “Teacher, I brought my son to you. He has an evil spirit in him that ·stops him from talking [makes him mute]. 18 When the spirit attacks him, it throws him on the ground. Then my son foams at the mouth, grinds his teeth, and becomes ·very stiff [rigid]. I asked your ·followers [disciples] to ·force [drive; cast] the evil spirit out, but they couldn’t.”
19 Jesus answered, “You ·people have no faith [unbelieving/faithless generation]. How long must I stay with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring the boy to me.”
20 So ·the followers [L they] brought him to Jesus. As soon as the evil spirit saw Jesus, it ·made the boy lose control of himself [threw the boy into convulsions], and he fell down and rolled on the ground, foaming at the mouth.
21 Jesus asked the boy’s father, “How long has this been happening?”
The father answered, “Since ·he was very young [childhood]. 22 The spirit often throws him into a fire or into water to ·kill [destroy] him. If you can do anything for him, please have ·pity [compassion] on us and help us.”
23 Jesus said to the father, “You said, ‘If you can!’ All things are possible for the one who believes.”
24 Immediately the father cried out, “I do believe! Help ·me to believe more [me not to doubt; me overcome my unbelief; L my unbelief]!”
25 When Jesus saw that a crowd was quickly gathering, he ·ordered [rebuked] the ·evil [defiling; L unclean] spirit, saying, “You deaf and mute spirit, I command you to come out of this boy and never enter him again!”
26 The evil spirit screamed and ·caused the boy to fall on the ground again [convulsed him violently]. Then the spirit came out. The boy looked as if he were dead, and many people said, “He is dead!” 27 But Jesus took hold of the boy’s hand and helped him to stand up.
28 When Jesus went into the house, his ·followers [disciples] began asking him privately, “Why couldn’t we ·force [drive; cast] that evil spirit out?”
29 Jesus answered, “That kind of spirit can only be forced out by prayer.”[a]
Jesus Again Talks About His Death(C)
30 Then Jesus and his ·followers [disciples] left that place and went through Galilee. He didn’t want anyone to know where he was, 31 because he was teaching his ·followers [disciples]. He said to them, “The Son of Man will be ·handed over [delivered over; betrayed] to ·people [L human hands], and they will kill him [C the “handing over” may be Judas’ betrayal or God’s actions in “giving up” his Son to accomplish salvation; Rom. 4:25]. After three days, he will rise from the dead.” 32 But they did not understand what Jesus meant, and they were afraid to ask him.
Who Is the Greatest?(D)
33 Jesus and his ·followers [disciples] went to Capernaum. When they went into a house there, he asked them, “What were you ·arguing about [discussing] on the road?” 34 But they did not answer, because their ·argument [discussion] on the road was about which one of them was the greatest.
35 Jesus sat down and called ·the twelve apostles [the Twelve] to him. He said, “Whoever wants to be ·the most important [first] must be last of all and servant of all.”
36 Then Jesus took a small child and had ·him [or her; C the Greek here does not specify gender] stand among them. Taking the child in his arms, he said, 37 “Whoever ·accepts [welcomes; receives] a child like this in my name [C as a representative or follower of Jesus] accepts me. And whoever ·accepts [welcomes; receives] me accepts [not only me, but] the One who sent me.” [C Children had low social status, so the saying indicates concern for the lowly.]
Anyone Not Against Us Is for Us(E)
38 Then John said, “Teacher, we saw someone using your name [C invoking your authority] to ·force [drive; cast] demons out of a person. We told him to stop, because he does not belong to our group.”
39 But Jesus said, “Don’t stop him, because anyone who uses my name to do powerful things will not ·easily [quickly] say evil things about me. 40 Whoever is not against us is ·with [for] us. 41 I tell you the truth, whoever gives you a drink of water because you belong to the ·Christ [Messiah] will ·truly get [L certainly not lose] his reward.
42 “If someone causes one of these little children who believes in me to ·sin [lose faith; stumble], it would be better for that person to have a ·large stone [large millstone; L millstone of a donkey] tied around his neck and be ·drowned [L thrown] in the sea. 43 If your hand causes you ·to sin [lose faith; stumble], cut it off. It is better for you ·to lose part of your body and live forever [L to enter life maimed] than to have two hands and go to ·hell [L Gehenna; C a valley outside of Jerusalem where in the OT period children were sacrificed to a pagan god; later used as a burning trash heap; a metaphor for hell], where the fire never goes out. |44 In hell the worm does not die; the fire is never put out.|[b] 45 If your foot causes you to ·sin [lose faith; stumble], cut it off. It is better for you ·to lose part of your body and to live forever [L to enter life crippled] than to have two feet and be thrown into ·hell [Gehenna; v. 43]. |46 In hell the worm does not die; the fire is never put out.|[c] 47 If your eye causes you to ·sin [lose faith; stumble], take it out. [C The meaning of this proverb is uncertain; it may mean that the testing of believers purifies (fire) and preserves (salt); or it may refer to believers as God’s covenant people, since salt and fire were part of the OT sacrificial system; see Lev. 2:3; Num. 18:9.]
50 “Salt is good, but if the salt loses its salty taste, you cannot make it salty again. So, ·be full of salt [L have salt in/among yourselves; C salt here may symbolize fellowship within the covenant], and have peace with each other.”

Transfiguración de Jesús (Mt 17,1-13; Lc 9,28-36)
2 Seis días después, Jesús tomó a Pedro, Santiago y Juan y los llevó aparte a ellos solos a un monte alto. Allí se transfiguró en presencia de ellos. 3 Su ropa se volvió de una blancura resplandeciente, tal como ningún batanero de este mundo sería capaz de blanquearla. 4 Y los discípulos vieron a Elías y a Moisés, que estaban conversando con Jesús. 5 Entonces Pedro dijo a Jesús:
— ¡Maestro, qué bien estamos aquí! Hagamos tres cabañas: una para ti, otra para Moisés y otra para Elías.
6 Es que no sabía lo que decía, porque estaban aterrados. 7 En esto quedaron envueltos por una nube de la que salía una voz:
— Este es mi Hijo amado. Escuchadlo.
8 En aquel instante miraron a su alrededor y ya no vieron a nadie sino únicamente a Jesús solo con ellos. 9 Mientras bajaban del monte, Jesús les ordenó que no contaran a nadie lo que habían visto, hasta que el Hijo del hombre hubiera resucitado. 10 Y, en efecto, ellos guardaron este secreto, aunque discutían qué sería aquello de “resucitar”. 11 Entonces le preguntaron:
— ¿Por qué dicen los maestros de la ley que Elías tiene que venir primero?
12 Jesús les contestó:
— Es cierto que Elías ha de venir primero para ponerlo todo en orden. Pero, por otra parte, ¿no dicen las Escrituras que el Hijo del hombre ha de sufrir mucho y que ha de ser ultrajado? 13 En cuanto a Elías, os aseguro que ya vino; pero ellos lo maltrataron a su antojo, tal como dicen las Escrituras sobre él.
Curación de un muchacho poseído por el demonio (Mt 17,14-21; Lc 9,37-43)
14 Cuando volvieron a donde estaban los otros discípulos, vieron que había mucha gente reunida con ellos y que estaban discutiendo con los maestros de la ley. 15 Al ver a Jesús, la gente se quedó sorprendida y corrieron todos a saludarlo. 16 Jesús preguntó a sus discípulos:
— ¿De qué estáis discutiendo con ellos?
17 Uno de entre la gente le contestó:
— Maestro, te he traído a mi hijo, que está poseído por un espíritu mudo. 18 Cuando menos se espera, se apodera de él y lo derriba al suelo, haciéndole arrojar espuma por la boca y rechinar los dientes hasta que se queda rígido. Pedí a tus discípulos que lo expulsaran, pero no lo han conseguido.
19 Jesús exclamó:
— Gente incrédula, ¿hasta cuándo habré de estar entre vosotros? ¿Hasta cuándo tendré que soportaros? Traedme al muchacho.
20 Se lo llevaron y, cuando el espíritu vio a Jesús, en seguida se puso a zarandear con violencia al muchacho, que cayó al suelo revolcándose y echando espuma por la boca. 21 Jesús preguntó al padre:
— ¿Cuánto tiempo hace que le pasa esto?
Le contestó:
— Desde niño. 22 Muchas veces ese espíritu lo arroja al fuego o al agua para matarlo. Si puedes, ten compasión de nosotros y ayúdanos.
23 Jesús le contestó:
— ¡Cómo “si puedes”! Para el que tiene fe, todo es posible.
24 Entonces el padre del muchacho exclamó:
— ¡Yo tengo fe, pero ayúdame a tener más!
25 Jesús, al ver que se aglomeraba la gente, increpó al espíritu impuro, diciéndole:
— ¡Espíritu mudo y sordo, te ordeno que salgas de él y que no vuelvas a entrar en él jamás!
26 El espíritu, gritando y haciendo que el muchacho se retorciera con violencia, salió de él dejándolo como muerto, de manera que, en efecto, todos los presentes lo consideraban muerto. 27 Pero Jesús lo tomó de la mano y lo levantó, y el muchacho quedó en pie.
28 Más tarde, cuando los discípulos entraron en casa, preguntaron aparte a Jesús:
— ¿Por qué nosotros no pudimos expulsar ese demonio?
29 Jesús les contestó:
— Este es un género de demonio que nadie puede expulsar si no es por medio de la oración.
Jesús anuncia por segunda vez su muerte y su resurrección (Mt 17,22-23; Lc 9,43b-45)
30 Se fueron de allí y pasaron por Galilea. Jesús no quería que nadie lo supiera, 31 porque estaba dedicado a instruir a sus discípulos. Les explicaba que el Hijo del hombre iba a ser entregado a hombres que lo matarían, y que al tercer día resucitaría. 32 Pero ellos no entendían nada de esto. Y tampoco se atrevían a preguntarle.
El más importante en el Reino (Mt 18,1-5; Lc 9,46-48)
33 Llegaron a Cafarnaún y, una vez en casa, Jesús les preguntó:
— ¿Qué discutíais por el camino?
34 Ellos callaban, porque por el camino habían venido discutiendo acerca de quién de ellos sería el más importante. 35 Jesús entonces se sentó, llamó a los Doce y les dijo:
— Si alguno quiere ser el primero, colóquese en último lugar y hágase servidor de todos.
36 Luego puso un niño en medio de ellos y, tomándolo en brazos, les dijo:
37 — El que recibe en mi nombre a uno de estos niños, a mí me recibe; y el que me recibe a mí, no sólo me recibe a mí, sino al que me ha enviado.
Quien no está contra nosotros, está a nuestro favor (Lc 9,49-50)
38 Juan le dijo:
— Maestro, hemos visto a uno que estaba expulsando demonios en tu nombre y se lo hemos prohibido, porque no es de los nuestros.
39 Jesús contestó:
— No se lo prohibáis, porque nadie puede hacer milagros en mi nombre y al mismo tiempo hablar mal de mí. 40 El que no está contra nosotros, está a nuestro favor. 41 Y el que os dé a beber un vaso de agua porque sois del Mesías, os aseguro que no quedará sin recompensa.
Los que inducen al pecado (Mt 18,6-9)
42 A quien sea causa de pecado para uno de estos pequeños que creen en mí, más le valdría que lo arrojaran al mar con una piedra de molino atada al cuello. 43 Si tu mano va a ser causa de que caigas en pecado, córtatela. Porque más te vale entrar manco en la vida eterna que con tus dos manos ir a parar a la gehena, al fuego que nunca se apaga, [44 donde el gusano que los roe no muere y el fuego no se extingue]. 45 Y si tu pie va a ser causa de que caigas en pecado, córtatelo. Porque más te vale entrar cojo en la vida eterna que con tus dos pies ser arrojado a la gehena, [46 donde el gusano que los roe no muere y el fuego no se extingue]. 47 Y si tu ojo va a ser causa de que caigas en pecado, arrójalo lejos de ti. Porque más te vale entrar tuerto en el reino de Dios que con tus dos ojos ser arrojado a la gehena, 48 donde el gusano que los roe no muere y el fuego no se extingue. 49 Todo ha de ser salado al fuego. 50 La sal es buena, pero si se vuelve insípida, ¿cómo recobrará su sabor? ¡Tened sal en vosotros mismos y vivid en paz unos con otros!

The Transfiguration(C)(D)
2 After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John(E) with him and led them up a high mountain, where they were all alone. There he was transfigured before them. 3 His clothes became dazzling white,(F) whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them. 4 And there appeared before them Elijah and Moses, who were talking with Jesus.
5 Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi,(G) it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” 6 (He did not know what to say, they were so frightened.)
7 Then a cloud appeared and covered them, and a voice came from the cloud:(H) “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!”(I)
8 Suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus.
9 As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus gave them orders not to tell anyone(J) what they had seen until the Son of Man(K) had risen from the dead. 10 They kept the matter to themselves, discussing what “rising from the dead” meant.
11 And they asked him, “Why do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?”
12 Jesus replied, “To be sure, Elijah does come first, and restores all things. Why then is it written that the Son of Man(L) must suffer much(M) and be rejected?(N) 13 But I tell you, Elijah has come,(O) and they have done to him everything they wished, just as it is written about him.”
Jesus Heals a Boy Possessed by an Impure Spirit(P)
14 When they came to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and the teachers of the law arguing with them. 15 As soon as all the people saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with wonder and ran to greet him.
16 “What are you arguing with them about?” he asked.
17 A man in the crowd answered, “Teacher, I brought you my son, who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech. 18 Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit, but they could not.”
19 “You unbelieving generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy to me.”
20 So they brought him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth.(Q)
21 Jesus asked the boy’s father, “How long has he been like this?”
“From childhood,” he answered. 22 “It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.”
23 “‘If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes.”(R)
24 Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”
25 When Jesus saw that a crowd was running to the scene,(S) he rebuked the impure spirit. “You deaf and mute spirit,” he said, “I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.”
26 The spirit shrieked, convulsed him violently and came out. The boy looked so much like a corpse that many said, “He’s dead.” 27 But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him to his feet, and he stood up.
28 After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately,(T) “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”
29 He replied, “This kind can come out only by prayer.[a]”
Jesus Predicts His Death a Second Time(U)
30 They left that place and passed through Galilee. Jesus did not want anyone to know where they were, 31 because he was teaching his disciples. He said to them, “The Son of Man(V) is going to be delivered into the hands of men. They will kill him,(W) and after three days(X) he will rise.”(Y) 32 But they did not understand what he meant(Z) and were afraid to ask him about it.
33 They came to Capernaum.(AA) When he was in the house,(AB) he asked them, “What were you arguing about on the road?” 34 But they kept quiet because on the way they had argued about who was the greatest.(AC)
35 Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.”(AD)
36 He took a little child whom he placed among them. Taking the child in his arms,(AE) he said to them, 37 “Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me.”(AF)
Whoever Is Not Against Us Is for Us(AG)
38 “Teacher,” said John, “we saw someone driving out demons in your name and we told him to stop, because he was not one of us.”(AH)
39 “Do not stop him,” Jesus said. “For no one who does a miracle in my name can in the next moment say anything bad about me, 40 for whoever is not against us is for us.(AI) 41 Truly I tell you, anyone who gives you a cup of water in my name because you belong to the Messiah will certainly not lose their reward.(AJ)
Causing to Stumble
42 “If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble,(AK) it would be better for them if a large millstone were hung around their neck and they were thrown into the sea.(AL) 43 If your hand causes you to stumble,(AM) cut it off. It is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go into hell,(AN) where the fire never goes out.(AO) [44] [b] 45 And if your foot causes you to stumble,(AP) cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than to have two feet and be thrown into hell.(AQ) [46] [c] 47 And if your eye causes you to stumble,(AR) pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell,(AS) 48 where
49 Everyone will be salted(AU) with fire.
50 “Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can you make it salty again?(AV) Have salt among yourselves,(AW) and be at peace with each other.”(AX)
