9 And Jesus said to them, Truly and solemnly I say to you, there are some standing here who will in no way taste death before they see the kingdom of God come in [its] power.
2 Six days after this, Jesus took with Him Peter and James and John and led them up on a high mountain apart by themselves. And He was transfigured before them and became resplendent with divine brightness.
3 And His garments became glistening, intensely white, as no fuller (cloth dresser, launderer) on earth could bleach them.
4 And Elijah appeared [there] to them, accompanied by Moses, and they were [a]holding [a protracted] conversation with Jesus.
5 And [b]Peter took up the conversation, saying, Master, it is good and suitable and beautiful for us to be here. Let us make three booths (tents)—one for You and one for Moses and one for Elijah.
6 For he did not [really] know what to say, for they were in a violent fright ([c]aghast with dread).
7 And a cloud threw a shadow upon them, and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is My Son, the [[d]most dearworthy] Beloved One. Be [e]constantly listening to and obeying Him!
8 And looking around, they suddenly no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus only.
9 And as they were coming back down the mountain, He admonished and [f]expressly ordered them to tell no one what they had seen until the Son of Man should rise from among the dead.
10 So they carefully and faithfully kept the matter to themselves, questioning and disputing with one another about what rising from among the dead meant.
11 And they asked Him, Why do the scribes say that it is necessary for Elijah to come first?(A)
12 And He said to them, Elijah, it is true, does come first to restore all things and [g]set them to rights. And how is it written of the Son of Man that He will suffer many things and be utterly despised and be treated with contempt and rejected?(B)
13 But I tell you that Elijah has already come, and [people] did to him whatever they desired, as it is written of him.
14 And when they came to the [nine] disciples, they saw a great crowd around them and scribes questioning and disputing with them.
15 And immediately all the crowd, when they saw Jesus [[h]returning from the holy mount, His face and person yet glistening], they were greatly amazed and ran up to Him [and] greeted Him.
16 And He asked them, About what are you questioning and discussing with them?
17 And one of the throng replied to Him, Teacher, I brought my son to You, for he has a dumb spirit.
18 And wherever it lays hold of him [so as to make him its own], it dashes him down and convulses him, and he foams [at the mouth] and grinds his teeth, and he [[i]falls into a motionless stupor and] is wasting away. And I asked Your disciples to drive it out, and they were not able [to do it].
19 And He answered them, O unbelieving generation [without any faith]! How long [j]shall I [have to do] with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to Me.
20 So they brought [the boy] to Him, and when the spirit saw Him, at once it completely convulsed the boy, and he fell to the ground and kept rolling about, foaming [at the mouth].
21 And [Jesus] asked his father, How long has he had this? And he answered, From the time he was a little boy.
22 And it has often thrown him both into fire and into water, intending to kill him. But if You can do anything, do have pity on us and help us.
23 And Jesus said, [You say to Me], If You can do anything? [Why,] all things can be (are possible) to him who believes!
24 At once the father of the boy gave [an [k]eager, [l]piercing, inarticulate] cry with tears, and he said, Lord, I believe! [Constantly] help my [m]weakness of faith!
25 But when Jesus noticed that a crowd [of people] came running together, He rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, You dumb and deaf spirit, I charge you to come out of him and never go into him again.
26 And after giving a [hoarse, clamoring, fear-stricken] shriek of anguish and convulsing him terribly, it came out; and the boy lay [pale and motionless] like a corpse, so that many of them said, He is dead.
27 But Jesus took [[n]a strong grip of] his hand and began lifting him up, and he stood.
28 And when He had gone indoors, His disciples asked Him privately, Why could not we drive it out?
29 And He replied to them, This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer [o]and fasting.
30 They went on from there and passed along through Galilee. And He did not wish to have anyone know it,
31 For He was [engaged for the time being in] teaching His disciples. He said to them, The Son of Man is being delivered into the hands of men, and they will put Him to death; and when He has been killed, after three days He will rise [[p]from death].
32 But they did not comprehend what He was saying, and they were afraid to ask Him [what this statement meant].
33 And they arrived at Capernaum; and when [they were] in the house, He asked them, What were you discussing and arguing about on the road?
34 But they kept still, for on the road they had discussed and disputed with one another as to who was the greatest.
35 And He sat down and called the Twelve [apostles], and He said to them, If anyone desires to be first, he must be last of all, and servant of all.
36 And He took a little child and put him in the center of their group; and taking him in [His] arms, He said to them,
37 Whoever in My name and for My sake accepts and receives and welcomes one such child also accepts and receives and welcomes Me; and whoever so receives Me receives not only Me but Him Who sent Me.
38 John said to Him, Teacher, we saw a man who does not follow along with us driving out demons in Your name, and we forbade him to do it, because he [q]is not one of our band [of Your disciples].
39 But Jesus said, Do not restrain or hinder or forbid him; for no one who does a mighty work in My name will soon afterward be able to speak evil of Me.
40 For he who is not against us is for us.(C)
41 For I tell you truly, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to and bear the name of Christ will by no means fail to get his reward.
42 And whoever causes one of these little ones (these believers) who [r]acknowledge and cleave to Me to stumble and sin, it would be better (more profitable and wholesome) for him if a [huge] millstone were hung about his neck, and he were thrown into the sea.
43 And if your hand puts a stumbling block before you and causes you to sin, cut it off! It is more profitable and wholesome for you to go into life [[s]that is really worthwhile] maimed than with two hands to go to hell (Gehenna), into the fire that cannot be put out.[t]
45 And if your foot is a cause of stumbling and sin to you, cut it off! It is more profitable and wholesome for you to enter into life [that is really worthwhile] crippled than, having two feet, to be cast into hell (Gehenna)[u].
47 And if your eye causes you to stumble and sin, pluck it out! It is more profitable and wholesome for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into hell (Gehenna),
48 Where their worm [[v]which preys on the inhabitants and is a symbol of the wounds inflicted on the man himself by his sins] does not die, and the fire is not put out.(D)
49 For everyone shall be salted with fire.
50 Salt is good (beneficial), but if salt has lost its saltness, how will you restore [the saltness to] it? Have salt within yourselves, and be at peace and live in harmony with one another.

9 En Hij zei tegen hen: "Luister goed! Ik zeg jullie dat een paar van jullie niet zullen sterven voordat ze hebben gezien dat het Koninkrijk van God met kracht is gekomen."
Jezus op de berg
2 Zes dagen later nam Jezus Petrus, Jakobus en Johannes mee een hoge berg op. Alleen zij drieën waren bij Hem. 3 En ze zagen Jezus plotseling veranderen en zijn kleren werden schitterend wit. Zo wit als niemand op aarde ze zou kunnen maken. 4 En ze zagen Elia en Mozes[a] met Jezus spreken. 5 Petrus zei tegen Jezus: "Meester, het is goed dat wij hier zijn. Laten we drie tenten neerzetten: één voor U, één voor Mozes en één voor Elia." 6 Want hij wist niet wat hij moest zeggen, want ze waren erg bang. 7 Toen kwam er een wolk om hen heen. En een stem zei vanuit de wolk: "Dit is mijn Zoon, van wie Ik heel veel houd. Luister naar Hem." 8 Maar toen ze rondkeken, zagen ze alleen Jezus nog maar. Verder was er niemand meer.
9 Toen ze de berg weer afdaalden, zei Jezus streng dat ze aan niemand mochten vertellen wat ze hadden gezien. Ze mochten er pas met andere mensen over praten als de Mensenzoon uit de dood zou zijn opgestaan. 10 Ze dachten hierover na. En ze hadden het er met elkaar over wat dat betekende: uit de dood opstaan. 11 En ze vroegen aan Jezus: "Waarom zeggen de wetgeleerden dat eerst Elia moet komen?" 12 Hij antwoordde: "Ja, Elia zal eerst komen en alle dingen weer goed maken. Maar er staat ook in de Boeken over de Mensenzoon dat Hij veel moet lijden en dat de mensen niets met Hem te maken zullen willen hebben. 13 Maar Ik zeg jullie dat Elia al gekomen is. En ze hebben met hem gedaan wat ze wilden. Dat staat ook over hem in de Boeken."
Jezus geneest een zieke jongen
14 Toen kwamen ze bij de andere leerlingen terug. Ze zagen dat er een grote groep mensen om hen heen stond. Een aantal wetgeleerden was met hen ruzie aan het maken. 15 Zodra de mensen Jezus zagen, waren ze erg verbaasd. Ze liepen naar Hem toe om Hem te begroeten.
16 Jezus vroeg: "Waar hebben jullie ruzie over?" 17 Een man uit de groep antwoordde Hem: "Meester, ik kwam mijn zoon naar U toe brengen. Er zit een geest in hem die maakt dat hij niet kan praten. 18 En als de geest hem aanvalt, gooit hij de jongen op de grond. Dan gaat mijn zoon stuiptrekken. Hij krijgt schuim op zijn mond, knarst met zijn tanden en wordt helemaal stijf. Ik heb aan uw leerlingen gevraagd om de geest uit hem weg te jagen. Maar ze konden het niet." 19 Toen zei Hij tegen hen: "Wat zijn jullie toch ongelovig! Hoelang zal Ik nog bij jullie zijn? Hoelang moet Ik jullie nog verdragen? Breng hem bij Mij." 20 Ze brachten de jongen naar Jezus. Toen de geest Jezus zag, gooide hij de jongen op de grond en maakte hem aan het stuiptrekken. De jongen lag met schuim op de mond over de grond te rollen. 21 Jezus vroeg aan de vader: "Hoelang heeft hij dat al?" De vader zei: "Vanaf dat hij een klein kind was. 22 En die geest heeft hem ook al vaak in het vuur en in het water gegooid, om hem te doden. Maar als U iets kan doen, help ons dan alstublieft!" 23 Jezus zei tegen hem: " 'Als U iets kan doen?' Alles kan, als je maar geloof hebt." 24 Onmiddellijk riep de vader met tranen in de ogen: "Ik geloof, Heer! Kom mijn zwakke geloof te hulp!" 25 Toen Jezus zag dat er heel veel mensen kwamen kijken, zei Hij streng tegen de duivelse geest: "Luister, jij dove geest die maakt dat de jongen niet kan praten! Ik beveel jou uit hem weg te gaan. En je mag niet meer terugkomen!" 26 En de geest ging met veel geschreeuw en stuiptrekkingen uit hem weg. De jongen zag eruit alsof hij dood was. De mensen zeiden dan ook dat hij dood was. 27 Maar Jezus greep de jongen bij zijn hand en hielp hem overeind.
28 Toen Jezus een huis was binnen gegaan, vroegen zijn leerlingen Hem: "Waarom konden wij die geest niet wegjagen?" 29 Jezus antwoordde: "Deze soort wordt alleen verjaagd door mensen die bidden en niets eten om zich op God te richten."
30 Ze vertrokken daar en reisden door Galilea. Hij wilde niet dat iemand dat wist. 31 Want Hij wilde met zijn leerlingen spreken. Hij zei tegen hen: "De Mensenzoon zal gevangen worden genomen en gedood worden. Maar op de derde dag zal Hij uit de dood opstaan." 32 Maar ze begrepen het niet. En ze durfden Hem niet om uitleg te vragen.
De vraag wie het belangrijkste is
33 Ze kwamen in Kapernaüm en gingen naar Jezus' huis. Toen Hij thuis was, vroeg Hij hun: "Waar hadden jullie onderweg ruzie over?" 34 Ze zwegen. Want ze hadden er onderweg ruzie over gemaakt, wie van hen de belangrijkste was. 35 Hij ging zitten, riep de twaalf leerlingen bij Zich en zei tegen hen: "Als je de belangrijkste wil zijn, moet je de minst belangrijke worden. Je moet een dienaar worden van alle anderen." 36 Hij trok een kind naar Zich toe. Hij zette het midden in de kring, sloeg zijn arm om het kind heen en zei: 37 "Als je gastvrij bent voor een kind omdat je in Mij gelooft, ben je eigenlijk gastvrij voor Mij. En als je gastvrij bent voor Mij, ontvang je eigenlijk niet Mij, maar Hem die Mij heeft gestuurd."
Vóór of tegen Jezus
38 Johannes zei tegen Jezus: "Meester, we hebben iemand gezien die niet met ons meegaat, maar die toch namens U duivelse geesten uit de mensen wegjaagt. We hebben het hem verboden, omdat hij niet met ons meegaat." 39 Maar Jezus zei: "Houd hem niet tegen. Want iemand die wonderen doet omdat hij in Mij gelooft, kan niet kort daarna slechte dingen over Mij zeggen. 40 Want mensen die niet tégen ons zijn, zijn vóór ons."
Mensen die anderen verleiden om slechte dingen te doen, zullen worden gestraft
41 Jezus zei: "Als iemand die in de Messias gelooft aan jullie een beker water te drinken geeft omdat jullie leerlingen van Hem zijn, zal hij daarvoor een beloning krijgen.
42 Maar pas op als je één van deze kinderen die in Mij geloven, overhaalt om slechte dingen te doen. Het zou dan beter voor je zijn geweest, als je met een grote steen om je nek in zee was gegooid, dan dat je daarvoor de straf moet dragen."
Ongehoorzaamheid aan God
43 Jezus zei: "Als je in de verleiding komt om met je hand iets slechts te doen, hak hem dan liever af. Dan ga je met maar één hand het eeuwige leven binnen. Dat is beter dan met twee handen in het onblusbare vuur van de hel gegooid te worden. 44 Daar gaan je wormen niet dood en wordt het vuur niet geblust. 45 En als je in de verleiding komt om met je voet iets slechts te doen, hak hem dan liever af. Dan ga je met maar één voet het eeuwige leven binnen. Dat is beter dan met twee voeten in het onblusbare vuur van de hel gegooid te worden. 46 Daar gaan je wormen niet dood en wordt het vuur niet geblust. 47 En als je door iets wat je ziet in de verleiding komt om iets slechts te doen, ruk dan liever je oog uit. Dan ga je met maar één oog het Koninkrijk van God binnen. Dat is beter dan met twee ogen in de hel gegooid te worden. 48 Daar gaan je wormen niet dood en wordt het vuur niet geblust.
49 Iedereen zal met het vuur van verleidingen zout worden gemaakt. Net zoals er op elk offer zout gedaan wordt.[b] 50 Zout is goed, maar als zout niet meer zout is, waarmee kun je het dan nog zout maken? Zorg dat er zout in jullie zit. En maak geen ruzie met elkaar."

2 (D)Now after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John, and led them up on a high mountain apart by themselves; and He was transfigured before them. 3 His clothes became shining, exceedingly (E)white, like snow, such as no launderer on earth can whiten them. 4 And Elijah appeared to them with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus. 5 Then Peter answered and said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; and let us make three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah”— 6 because he did not know what to say, for they were greatly afraid.
7 And a (F)cloud came and overshadowed them; and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is (G)My beloved Son. (H)Hear Him!” 8 Suddenly, when they had looked around, they saw no one anymore, but only Jesus with themselves.
9 (I)Now as they came down from the mountain, He commanded them that they should tell no one the things they had seen, till the Son of Man had risen from the dead. 10 So they kept this word to themselves, questioning (J)what the rising from the dead meant.
11 And they asked Him, saying, “Why do the scribes say (K)that Elijah must come first?”
12 Then He answered and told them, “Indeed, Elijah is coming first and restores all things. And (L)how is it written concerning the Son of Man, that He must suffer many things and (M)be treated with contempt? 13 But I say to you that (N)Elijah has also come, and they did to him whatever they wished, as it is written of him.”
A Boy Is Healed(O)
14 (P)And when He came to the disciples, He saw a great multitude around them, and scribes disputing with them. 15 Immediately, when they saw Him, all the people were greatly amazed, and running to Him, greeted Him. 16 And He asked the scribes, “What are you discussing with them?”
17 Then (Q)one of the crowd answered and said, “Teacher, I brought You my son, who has a mute spirit. 18 And wherever it seizes him, it throws him down; he foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth, and becomes rigid. So I spoke to Your disciples, that they should cast it out, but they could not.”
19 He answered him and said, “O (R)faithless[b] generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I [c]bear with you? Bring him to Me.” 20 Then they brought him to Him. And (S)when he saw Him, immediately the spirit convulsed him, and he fell on the ground and wallowed, foaming at the mouth.
21 So He asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?”
And he said, “From childhood. 22 And often he has thrown him both into the fire and into the water to destroy him. But if You can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.”
23 Jesus said to him, (T)“If[d] you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.”
24 Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, “Lord, I believe; (U)help my unbelief!”
25 When Jesus saw that the people came running together, He (V)rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “Deaf and dumb spirit, I command you, come out of him and enter him no more!” 26 Then the spirit cried out, convulsed him greatly, and came out of him. And he became as one dead, so that many said, “He is dead.” 27 But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose.
28 (W)And when He had come into the house, His disciples asked Him privately, “Why could we not cast it out?”
29 So He said to them, “This kind can come out by nothing but (X)prayer [e]and fasting.”
Jesus Again Predicts His Death and Resurrection
30 Then they departed from there and passed through Galilee, and He did not want anyone to know it. 31 (Y)For He taught His disciples and said to them, “The Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of men, and they will (Z)kill Him. And after He is killed, He will (AA)rise the third day.” 32 But they (AB)did not understand this saying, and were afraid to ask Him.
Who Is the Greatest?(AC)
33 (AD)Then He came to Capernaum. And when He was in the house He asked them, “What was it you [f]disputed among yourselves on the road?” 34 But they kept silent, for on the road they had (AE)disputed among themselves who would be the (AF)greatest. 35 And He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, (AG)“If anyone desires to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all.” 36 Then (AH)He took a little child and set him in the midst of them. And when He had taken him in His arms, He said to them, 37 “Whoever receives one of these little children in My name receives Me; and (AI)whoever receives Me, receives not Me but Him who sent Me.”
Jesus Forbids Sectarianism(AJ)
38 (AK)Now John answered Him, saying, “Teacher, we saw someone who does not follow us casting out demons in Your name, and we forbade him because he does not follow us.”
39 But Jesus said, “Do not forbid him, (AL)for no one who works a miracle in My name can soon afterward speak evil of Me. 40 For (AM)he who is not against [g]us is on [h]our side. 41 (AN)For whoever gives you a cup of water to drink in My name, because you belong to Christ, assuredly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward.
Jesus Warns of Offenses(AO)
42 (AP)“But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me [i]to stumble, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were thrown into the sea. 43 (AQ)If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. Tasteless Salt Is Worthless

17 And one of the multitude answered and said, Master, I have brought unto thee my son, which hath a dumb spirit;
18 And wheresoever he taketh him, he teareth him: and he foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away: and I spake to thy disciples that they should cast him out; and they could not.
19 He answereth him, and saith, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him unto me.
20 And they brought him unto him: and when he saw him, straightway the spirit tare him; and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foaming.
21 And he asked his father, How long is it ago since this came unto him? And he said, Of a child.
22 And ofttimes it hath cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him: but if thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us.
23 Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.
24 And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.
25 When Jesus saw that the people came running together, he rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him.
26 And the spirit cried, and rent him sore, and came out of him: and he was as one dead; insomuch that many said, He is dead.
27 But Jesus took him by the hand, and lifted him up; and he arose.
28 And when he was come into the house, his disciples asked him privately, Why could not we cast him out?
29 And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.
30 And they departed thence, and passed through Galilee; and he would not that any man should know it.
31 For he taught his disciples, and said unto them, The Son of man is delivered into the hands of men, and they shall kill him; and after that he is killed, he shall rise the third day.
32 But they understood not that saying, and were afraid to ask him.
33 And he came to Capernaum: and being in the house he asked them, What was it that ye disputed among yourselves by the way?
34 But they held their peace: for by the way they had disputed among themselves, who should be the greatest.
35 And he sat down, and called the twelve, and saith unto them, If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all.
36 And he took a child, and set him in the midst of them: and when he had taken him in his arms, he said unto them,
37 Whosoever shall receive one of such children in my name, receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me, receiveth not me, but him that sent me.
38 And John answered him, saying, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name, and he followeth not us: and we forbad him, because he followeth not us.
39 But Jesus said, Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my name, that can lightly speak evil of me.
40 For he that is not against us is on our part.
41 For whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name, because ye belong to Christ, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward.
42 And whosoever shall offend one of these little ones that believe in me, it is better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he were cast into the sea.
43 And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:
44 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.
45 And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:
46 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.
47 And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire:
48 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.
49 For every one shall be salted with fire, and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt.
50 Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith will ye season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another.
