⁹ As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus gave them orders not to tell anyone^(A) what they had seen until the Son of Man^(B) had risen from the dead. ¹⁰ They kept the matter to themselves, discussing what “rising from the dead” meant.

⁴³ And they were all amazed at the greatness of God.

Jesus Predicts His Death a Second Time

While everyone was marveling at all that Jesus did, he said to his disciples, ⁴⁴ “Listen carefully to what I am about to tell you: The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men.”^{(A) 45} But they did not understand what this meant. It was hidden from them, so that they did not grasp it,^(B) and they were afraid to ask him about it.

¹⁸ One of them, named Cleopas,^(A) asked him, “Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”

¹⁹ “What things?” he asked.

“About Jesus of Nazareth,”^(B) they replied. “He was a prophet,^(C) powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. ²⁰ The chief priests and our rulers^(D) handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; ²¹ but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel.^(E) And what is more, it is the third day^(F) since all this took place.

The Empty Tomb^(A)

20 Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene^(B) went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance.^{(C) 2} So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved,^(D) and said, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!”^(E)
