35 And He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, (A)“If anyone desires to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all.” 36 Then (B)He took a little child and set him in the midst of them. And when He had taken him in His arms, He said to them, 37 “Whoever receives one of these little children in My name receives Me; and (C)whoever receives Me, receives not Me but Him who sent Me.”

Jesus Forbids Sectarianism(D)

38 (E)Now John answered Him, saying, “Teacher, we saw someone who does not follow us casting out demons in Your name, and we forbade him because he does not follow us.”

39 But Jesus said, “Do not forbid him, (F)for no one who works a miracle in My name can soon afterward speak evil of Me. 40 For (G)he who is not against [a]us is on [b]our side. 41 (H)For whoever gives you a cup of water to drink in My name, because you belong to Christ, assuredly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward.

Jesus Warns of Offenses(I)

42 (J)“But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me [c]to stumble, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were thrown into the sea. 43 (K)If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life [d]maimed, rather than having two hands, to go to [e]hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched— 44 [f]where

(L)‘Their worm does not die
And the fire is not quenched.’

45 And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame, rather than having two feet, to be cast into [g]hell, [h]into the fire that shall never be quenched— 46 where

(M)‘Their worm does not die
And the fire is not quenched.’

47 And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into [i]hell fire— 48 where

(N)‘Their worm does not die
And the (O)fire is not quenched.’

Tasteless Salt Is Worthless

49 “For everyone will be (P)seasoned with fire, (Q)and[j] every sacrifice will be seasoned with salt. 50 (R)Salt is good, but if the salt loses its flavor, how will you season it? (S)Have salt in yourselves, and (T)have peace with one another.”

Greatness Is Serving(A)

35 (B)Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to Him, saying, “Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask.”

36 And He said to them, “What do you want Me to do for you?”

37 They said to Him, “Grant us that we may sit, one on Your right hand and the other on Your left, in Your glory.”

38 But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you ask. Are you able to drink the (C)cup that I drink, and be baptized with the (D)baptism that I am baptized with?”

39 They said to Him, “We are able.”

So Jesus said to them, (E)“You will indeed drink the cup that I drink, and with the baptism I am baptized with you will be baptized; 40 but to sit on My right hand and on My left is not Mine to give, but it is for those (F)for whom it is prepared.”

41 (G)And when the ten heard it, they began to be greatly displeased with James and John. 42 But Jesus called them to Himself and said to them, (H)“You know that those who are considered rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 43 (I)Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant. 44 And whoever of you desires to be first shall be slave of all. 45 For even (J)the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and (K)to give His life a ransom for many.”
