The Yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees(A)

14 Now the disciples[a] had forgotten to take any bread along, but they had one loaf with them in the boat. 15 Jesus[b] had been warning them, “Watch out! Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod!”[c]

16 So they were discussing with one another the fact that they didn’t have any bread. 17 Knowing this, Jesus[d] asked them, “Why are you discussing the fact that you don’t have any bread? Don’t you understand or perceive yet? Are your hearts hardened? 18 Do you have eyes, but fail to see? Do you have ears, but fail to hear?[e] Don’t you remember? 19 When I broke the five loaves for the 5,000, how many baskets did you fill with leftover pieces?”

They told him, “Twelve.”

20 When I broke[f] the seven loaves[g] for the 4,000, how many large baskets did you fill with the leftover pieces?”

They told him, “Seven.”

21 Then he asked them, “Don’t you understand yet?”

Beware the Leaven of the Pharisees and Herod

14 And they had forgotten to take bread, and except for one loaf, they did not have any[a] with them in the boat. 15 And he ordered them, saying, “Watch out! Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod!” 16 And they began to discuss with one another that they had no bread. 17 And knowing this,[b] he said to them, “Why are you discussing that you have no bread? Do you not yet perceive or understand? Have your hearts been hardened? 18 Although you[c] have eyes, do you not see? And although you[d] have ears, do you not hear? And do you not remember? 19 When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand how many baskets full of broken pieces did you pick up?” They said to him, “Twelve.” 20 “When I also[e] broke[f] the seven loaves[g] for the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you pick up?” And they said to him, “Seven.” 21 And he said to them, “Do you not yet understand?”
