Seconda moltiplicazione dei pani
8 (A)In quei giorni c'era di nuovo una folla grandissima, e poiché non avevano da mangiare, Gesú, chiamati a sé i discepoli, disse loro: 2 «Io ho pietà di questa gente; poiché da tre giorni sta con me e non ha da mangiare. 3 Se li rimando a casa digiuni, verranno meno per strada; perché alcuni di loro sono venuti da lontano». 4 I suoi discepoli gli risposero: «Come si potrebbe mai saziarli di pane qui, in un deserto?» 5 Egli domandò loro: «Quanti pani avete?» Essi dissero: «Sette». 6 Egli ordinò alla folla di accomodarsi per terra; e presi i sette pani, dopo aver reso grazie, li spezzò e diede ai discepoli perché li distribuissero alla folla; ed essi li distribuirono. 7 Avevano anche pochi pesciolini; ed egli, dopo aver detto la benedizione, comandò di distribuire anche quelli. 8 Tutti mangiarono e furono saziati; e dei pezzi avanzati si raccolsero sette panieri. 9 Erano circa quattromila persone. Poi Gesú li congedò.
I farisei chiedono un segno
10 (B)E, subito, salito sulla barca con i suoi discepoli, andò dalle parti di Dalmanuta.
11 Allora vennero i *farisei e si misero a discutere con lui, chiedendogli, per metterlo alla prova, un segno dal cielo. 12 Ma egli, dopo aver sospirato nel suo spirito, disse: «Perché questa generazione chiede un segno? In verità io vi dico: nessun segno sarà dato a questa generazione».
13 E, lasciatili, salí di nuovo sulla barca e passò all'altra riva.
14 I discepoli avevano nella barca solo un pane, perché avevano dimenticato di prenderne degli altri. 15 Egli li ammoniva dicendo: «Guardatevi dal lievito dei farisei e dal lievito di *Erode!» 16 Ed essi si dicevano gli uni agli altri: «È perché non abbiamo pane». 17 Gesú se ne accorse e disse loro: «Perché state a discutere del non aver pane? Non riflettete e non capite ancora? Avete il cuore indurito? 18 Avete occhi e non vedete, avete orecchi e non udite? E non vi ricordate? 19 Quando io spezzai i cinque pani per i cinquemila, quante ceste piene di pezzi raccoglieste?» Essi dissero: «Dodici». 20 «Quando spezzai i sette pani per i quattromila, quanti panieri pieni di pezzi raccoglieste?» Essi risposero: «Sette». 21 E diceva loro: «Non capite ancora?»
Gesú guarisce un cieco
22 (C)Giunsero a Betsaida; fu condotto a Gesú un cieco, e lo pregarono che lo toccasse. 23 Egli, preso il cieco per la mano, lo condusse fuori dal villaggio; gli sputò sugli occhi, pose le mani su di lui, e gli domandò: «Vedi qualche cosa?» 24 Egli aprí gli occhi e disse: «Scorgo gli uomini, perché li vedo come alberi che camminano». 25 Poi Gesú gli mise di nuovo le mani sugli occhi; ed egli guardò e fu guarito e vedeva ogni cosa chiaramente. 26 Gesú lo rimandò a casa sua e gli disse: «Non entrare neppure nel villaggio».
Pietro riconosce in Gesú il Cristo
27 (D)Poi Gesú se ne andò, con i suoi discepoli, verso i villaggi di *Cesarea di
Filippo; strada facendo, domandò ai suoi discepoli: «Chi dice la gente che io sia?» 28 Essi risposero: «Alcuni, *Giovanni il battista; altri, *Elia, e altri, uno dei *profeti. 29 Egli domandò loro: «E voi, chi dite che io sia?» E *Pietro gli rispose: «Tu sei il Cristo».
30 Ed egli ordinò loro di non parlare di lui a nessuno.
Il prezzo del discepolato
31 (E)Poi cominciò a insegnare loro che era necessario che il *Figlio dell'uomo soffrisse molte cose, fosse respinto dagli *anziani, dai capi dei *sacerdoti, dagli *scribi, e fosse ucciso e dopo tre giorni risuscitasse. 32 Diceva queste cose apertamente. Pietro lo prese da parte e cominciò a rimproverarlo. 33 Ma Gesú si voltò e, guardando i suoi discepoli, rimproverò Pietro dicendo: «Vattene via da me, Satana! Tu non hai il senso delle cose di Dio, ma delle cose degli uomini».
34 Chiamata a sé la folla con i suoi discepoli, disse loro: «Se uno vuol venire dietro a me, rinunzi a sé stesso, prenda la sua croce e mi segua. 35 Perché chi vorrà salvare la sua vita, la perderà; ma chi perderà la sua vita per amor mio e del vangelo, la salverà. 36 E che giova all'uomo se guadagna tutto il mondo e perde l'anima sua? 37 Infatti, che darebbe l'uomo in cambio della sua anima? 38 Perché se uno si sarà vergognato di me e delle mie parole in questa generazione adultera e peccatrice, anche il Figlio dell'uomo si vergognerà di lui quando verrà nella gloria del Padre suo con i santi angeli».

Feeding the Four Thousand(A)
8 In those days, (B)the multitude being very great and having nothing to eat, Jesus called His disciples to Him and said to them, 2 “I have (C)compassion on the multitude, because they have now continued with Me three days and have nothing to eat. 3 And if I send them away hungry to their own houses, they will faint on the way; for some of them have come from afar.”
4 Then His disciples answered Him, “How can one satisfy these people with bread here in the wilderness?”
5 (D)He asked them, “How many loaves do you have?”
And they said, “Seven.”
6 So He commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground. And He took the seven loaves and gave thanks, broke them and gave them to His disciples to set before them; and they set them before the multitude. 7 They also had a few small fish; and (E)having blessed them, He said to set them also before them. 8 So they ate and were filled, and they took up seven large baskets of leftover fragments. 9 Now those who had eaten were about four thousand. And He sent them away, 10 (F)immediately got into the boat with His disciples, and came to the region of Dalmanutha.
The Pharisees Seek a Sign(G)
11 (H)Then the Pharisees came out and began to dispute with Him, seeking from Him a sign from heaven, testing Him. 12 But He (I)sighed deeply in His spirit, and said, “Why does this generation seek a sign? Assuredly, I say to you, (J)no sign shall be given to this generation.”
Beware of the Leaven of the Pharisees and Herod(K)
13 And He left them, and getting into the boat again, departed to the other side. 14 (L)Now [a]the disciples had forgotten to take bread, and they did not have more than one loaf with them in the boat. 15 (M)Then He charged them, saying, “Take heed, beware of the [b]leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.”
16 And they reasoned among themselves, saying, “It is because we have no bread.”
17 But Jesus, being aware of it, said to them, “Why do you reason because you have no bread? (N)Do you not yet perceive nor understand? Is your heart [c]still hardened? 18 Having eyes, do you not see? And having ears, do you not hear? And do you not remember? 19 (O)When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments did you take up?”
They said to Him, “Twelve.”
20 “Also, (P)when I broke the seven for the four thousand, how many large baskets full of fragments did you take up?”
And they said, “Seven.”
21 So He said to them, “How is it (Q)you do not understand?”
A Blind Man Healed at Bethsaida
22 Then He came to Bethsaida; and they brought a (R)blind man to Him, and begged Him to (S)touch him. 23 So He took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the town. And when (T)He had spit on his eyes and put His hands on him, He asked him if he saw anything.
24 And he looked up and said, “I see men like trees, walking.”
25 Then He put His hands on his eyes again and made him look up. And he was restored and saw everyone clearly. 26 Then He sent him away to his house, saying, [d]“Neither go into the town, (U)nor tell anyone in the town.”
Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ(V)
27 (W)Now Jesus and His disciples went out to the towns of Caesarea Philippi; and on the road He asked His disciples, saying to them, “Who do men say that I am?”
28 So they answered, (X)“John the Baptist; but some say, (Y)Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.”
29 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”
Peter answered and said to Him, (Z)“You are the Christ.”
30 (AA)Then He strictly warned them that they should tell no one about Him.
Jesus Predicts His Death and Resurrection(AB)
31 And (AC)He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things, and be (AD)rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be (AE)killed, and after three days rise again. 32 He spoke this word openly. Then Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him. 33 But when He had turned around and looked at His disciples, He (AF)rebuked Peter, saying, “Get behind Me, Satan! For you are not [e]mindful of the things of God, but the things of men.”
Take Up the Cross and Follow Him(AG)
34 When He had called the people to Himself, with His disciples also, He said to them, (AH)“Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. 35 For (AI)whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it. 36 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? 37 Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? 38 (AJ)For whoever (AK)is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”

Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand(A)(B)(C)
8 During those days another large crowd gathered. Since they had nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples to him and said, 2 “I have compassion for these people;(D) they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. 3 If I send them home hungry, they will collapse on the way, because some of them have come a long distance.”
4 His disciples answered, “But where in this remote place can anyone get enough bread to feed them?”
5 “How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked.
“Seven,” they replied.
6 He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. When he had taken the seven loaves and given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people, and they did so. 7 They had a few small fish as well; he gave thanks for them also and told the disciples to distribute them.(E) 8 The people ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.(F) 9 About four thousand were present. After he had sent them away, 10 he got into the boat with his disciples and went to the region of Dalmanutha.
11 The Pharisees came and began to question Jesus. To test him, they asked him for a sign from heaven.(G) 12 He sighed deeply(H) and said, “Why does this generation ask for a sign? Truly I tell you, no sign will be given to it.” 13 Then he left them, got back into the boat and crossed to the other side.
The Yeast of the Pharisees and Herod
14 The disciples had forgotten to bring bread, except for one loaf they had with them in the boat. 15 “Be careful,” Jesus warned them. “Watch out for the yeast(I) of the Pharisees(J) and that of Herod.”(K)
16 They discussed this with one another and said, “It is because we have no bread.”
17 Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked them: “Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Are your hearts hardened?(L) 18 Do you have eyes but fail to see, and ears but fail to hear? And don’t you remember? 19 When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?”
“Twelve,”(M) they replied.
20 “And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?”
They answered, “Seven.”(N)
21 He said to them, “Do you still not understand?”(O)
Jesus Heals a Blind Man at Bethsaida
22 They came to Bethsaida,(P) and some people brought a blind man(Q) and begged Jesus to touch him. 23 He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. When he had spit(R) on the man’s eyes and put his hands on(S) him, Jesus asked, “Do you see anything?”
24 He looked up and said, “I see people; they look like trees walking around.”
25 Once more Jesus put his hands on the man’s eyes. Then his eyes were opened, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly. 26 Jesus sent him home, saying, “Don’t even go into[a] the village.”
Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah(T)
27 Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, “Who do people say I am?”
28 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist;(U) others say Elijah;(V) and still others, one of the prophets.”
29 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”
Peter answered, “You are the Messiah.”(W)
30 Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him.(X)
Jesus Predicts His Death(Y)

33 But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. “Get behind me, Satan!”(AG) he said. “You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”
The Way of the Cross
34 Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.(AH) 35 For whoever wants to save their life[b] will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it.(AI) 36 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? 37 Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 38 If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man(AJ) will be ashamed of them(AK) when he comes(AL) in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”
