The Message
A Meal for Four Thousand
8 1-3 At about this same time he again found himself with a hungry crowd on his hands. He called his disciples together and said, “This crowd is breaking my heart. They have stuck with me for three days, and now they have nothing to eat. If I send them home hungry, they’ll faint along the way—some of them have come a long distance.”
4 His disciples responded, “What do you expect us to do about it? Buy food out here in the desert?”
5 He asked, “How much bread do you have?”
“Seven loaves,” they said.
6-10 So Jesus told the crowd to sit down on the ground. After giving thanks, he took the seven bread loaves, broke them into pieces, and gave them to his disciples so they could hand them out to the crowd. They also had a few fish. He pronounced a blessing over the fish and told his disciples to hand them out as well. The crowd ate its fill. Seven sacks of leftovers were collected. There were well over four thousand at the meal. Then he sent them home. He himself went straight to the boat with his disciples and set out for Dalmanoutha.
11-12 When they arrived, the Pharisees came out and started in on him, badgering him to prove himself, pushing him up against the wall. Provoked, he said, “Why does this generation clamor for miraculous guarantees? If I have anything to say about it, you’ll not get so much as a hint of a guarantee.”
Contaminating Yeast
13-15 He then left them, got back in the boat, and headed for the other side. But the disciples forgot to pack a lunch. Except for a single loaf of bread, there wasn’t a crumb in the boat. Jesus warned, “Be very careful. Keep a sharp eye out for the contaminating yeast of Pharisees and the followers of Herod.”
16-19 Meanwhile, the disciples were finding fault with each other because they had forgotten to bring bread. Jesus overheard and said, “Why are you fussing because you forgot bread? Don’t you see the point of all this? Don’t you get it at all? Remember the five loaves I broke for the five thousand? How many baskets of leftovers did you pick up?”
They said, “Twelve.”
20 “And the seven loaves for the four thousand—how many bags full of leftovers did you get?”
“Seven.”
21 He said, “Do you still not get it?”
22-23 They arrived at Bethsaida. Some people brought a sightless man and begged Jesus to give him a healing touch. Taking him by the hand, he led him out of the village. He put spit in the man’s eyes, laid hands on him, and asked, “Do you see anything?”
24-26 He looked up. “I see men. They look like walking trees.” So Jesus laid hands on his eyes again. The man looked hard and realized that he had recovered perfect sight, saw everything in bright, twenty-twenty focus. Jesus sent him straight home, telling him, “Don’t enter the village.”
The Messiah
27 Jesus and his disciples headed out for the villages around Caesarea Philippi. As they walked, he asked, “Who do the people say I am?”
28 “Some say ‘John the Baptizer,’” they said. “Others say ‘Elijah.’ Still others say ‘one of the prophets.’”
29 He then asked, “And you—what are you saying about me? Who am I?”
Peter gave the answer: “You are the Christ, the Messiah.”
30-32 Jesus warned them to keep it quiet, not to breathe a word of it to anyone. He then began explaining things to them: “It is necessary that the Son of Man proceed to an ordeal of suffering, be tried and found guilty by the elders, high priests, and religion scholars, be killed, and after three days rise up alive.” He said this simply and clearly so they couldn’t miss it.
32-33 But Peter grabbed him in protest. Turning and seeing his disciples wavering, wondering what to believe, Jesus confronted Peter. “Peter, get out of my way! Satan, get lost! You have no idea how God works.”
34-37 Calling the crowd to join his disciples, he said, “Anyone who intends to come with me has to let me lead. You’re not in the driver’s seat; I am. Don’t run from suffering; embrace it. Follow me and I’ll show you how. Self-help is no help at all. Self-sacrifice is the way, my way, to saving yourself, your true self. What good would it do to get everything you want and lose you, the real you? What could you ever trade your soul for?
38 “If any of you are embarrassed over me and the way I’m leading you when you get around your fickle and unfocused friends, know that you’ll be an even greater embarrassment to the Son of Man when he arrives in all the splendor of God, his Father, with an army of the holy angels.”

Jesus alimenta mais de quatro mil pessoas

8 Em outra ocasião, uma outra grande multidão se reuniu e não tinham nada para comer. Jesus, então, chamou seus discípulos e disse-lhes:
2 —Sinto muita pena de toda esta gente; já faz três dias que estão comigo e não têm nada para comer. 3 Se eu mandá-los embora sem comer eles morrerão pelo caminho, pois alguns deles têm vindo de muito longe. 4 Os seus discípulos perguntaram:
—Mas onde poderíamos encontrar comida suficiente para toda essa multidão no meio deste deserto?
5 Mas Jesus lhes perguntou:
—Quantos pães vocês têm?
Eles responderam:
—Sete.
6 Então, ordenando à multidão que se sentasse no chão, Jesus pegou os sete pães, agradeceu a Deus, partiu-os e os deu aos seus discípulos, que os distribuíram entre a multidão. 7 E, como tinham também alguns peixinhos, Jesus agradeceu a Deus por eles e os deu aos discípulos para que também fossem distribuídos entre o povo. 8 Todos comeram e ficaram satisfeitos e, em seguida, recolheram sete cestos cheios com os pedaços que sobraram. 9 Havia mais ou menos quatro mil pessoas. Depois disso Jesus mandou que todos fossem para suas casas. 10 Logo depois disto Jesus entrou num barco com os seus discípulos e partiu para a região de Dalmanuta.
Algumas pessoas duvidam da autoridade de Jesus

11 Os fariseus chegaram e começaram a discutir com ele e, com o propósito de testá-lo, lhe pediram que lhes mostrasse algum sinal do céu. 12 Mas Jesus, dando um suspiro profundo, disse:
—Por que é que esta geração pede um sinal? Digo a verdade a vocês: nenhum sinal será mostrado para esta geração.
13 Depois, deixando-os, voltou para o barco e partiu para o outro lado do lago.
Os discípulos de Jesus não o entendem
(Mt 16.5-12)
14 Aconteceu que os discípulos tinham se esquecido de levar pão e tinham somente um pão com eles no barco. 15 Jesus, então, chamando a atenção deles, disse:
—Olhem, tenham cuidado com o fermento dos fariseus e de Herodes.
16 Eles começaram a discutir entre si sobre qual seria o significado das palavras de Jesus, e diziam:
—Ele está dizendo isso porque nós não temos pão.
17 Jesus entendeu o que estava acontecendo com eles e lhes disse:
—Por que vocês estão discutindo por não ter pão? Ainda não entenderam? Será que as mentes de vocês são tão estreitas assim? 18 Vocês têm olhos mas não veem; têm ouvidos mas não ouvem! Será que já se esqueceram? 19 Quando eu reparti os cinco pães entre aquelas cinco mil pessoas, quantos cestos vocês encheram com o que sobrou?
—Doze—responderam eles.
20 —E quando eu reparti os sete pães para aquelas quatro mil pessoas, quantos cestos vocês encheram com o que sobrou?
—Sete—responderam eles.
21 Então Jesus lhes disse:
—Vocês ainda não entenderam?
Jesus cura um cego de Betsaida
22 Depois disso eles chegaram a Betsaida. Lá as pessoas levaram a ele um cego e lhe imploraram para que tocasse nele. 23 Jesus levou o cego pela mão e o guiou para fora da vila. Depois, lhe cuspiu nos olhos e, colocando as mãos sobre ele, lhe perguntou:
—Você está vendo alguma coisa?
24 Ele olhou e respondeu:
—Sim, estou vendo pessoas; e elas se parecem com árvores, mas estão andando.
25 Jesus colocou novamente as mãos nos olhos do homem. E quando o homem abriu de novo os olhos, sua visão foi restabelecida e podia ver tudo claramente. 26 Depois disto Jesus mandou que fosse para casa, dizendo:
—Não vá para a vila.
A confissão de Pedro
(Mt 16.13-20; Lc 9.18-21)
27 Jesus e seus discípulos partiram para as vilas situadas ao redor da cidade de Cesareia de Filipe. No caminho, Jesus perguntou a seus discípulos:
—Quem as pessoas dizem que eu sou?
28 Eles responderam:
—Alguns dizem que é João Batista; outros dizem que é Elias; e outros, ainda, dizem que é um dos profetas.
29 Então Jesus lhes perguntou:
—E vocês? Quem vocês dizem que eu sou?
E Pedro respondeu:
—É o Cristo.
30 Ao ouvir isto, Jesus lhes ordenou que não dissessem nada a ninguém a respeito dele.
Jesus fala de sua morte pela primeira vez
(Mt 16.21-28; Lc 9.22-27)
31 Depois Jesus começou a ensinar a seus discípulos, dizendo:
—É necessário que o Filho do Homem sofra muitas coisas, que seja rejeitado pelos líderes, pelos líderes dos sacerdotes e pelos professores da lei, que seja morto e que ressuscite no terceiro dia.
32 Jesus disse estas coisas claramente a eles. Mas Pedro o chamou de lado e começou a repreendê-lo. 33 Então Jesus se virou e, olhando para os discípulos, repreendeu a Pedro, dizendo:
—Afaste-se de mim, Satanás[a]! Você não está interessado nas coisas de Deus, mas nas coisas humanas.
34 Depois de convocar a multidão e os seus discípulos, lhes disse:
—Se alguém quiser vir comigo, tem que negar a si mesmo, pegar a sua cruz e me seguir. 35 Pois todo aquele que quiser salvar a sua vida a todo custo, irá perdê-la; mas aquele que perder a sua vida por minha causa e por causa das Boas Novas, irá salvá-la. 36 Que vantagem terá alguém em ganhar o mundo inteiro e perder a sua alma? 37 O que pode um homem dar em troca de sua alma? 38 As pessoas de hoje em dia são pecadoras. Elas têm sido infiéis a Deus. Enquanto vocês estiverem morando no meio delas, não tenham vergonha de mim nem das coisas que ensino. Se acontecer isso, então eu, o Filho do Homem, também terei vergonha de vocês quando eu vier na glória de meu Pai com os santos anjos.

8 Por aquellos días se reunió otra vez mucha gente. Como no tenían qué comer, Jesús llamó a sus discípulos y les dijo:
2 — Me da lástima esta gente. Ya hace tres días que están conmigo y no tienen nada que comer. 3 Si los despido y los dejo ir a sus casas en ayunas, van a desfallecer por el camino. Y algunos han venido de lejos.
4 Los discípulos le contestaron:
— Pero ¿de dónde podrá uno sacar pan para dar de comer a todos estos en este lugar apartado?
5 Jesús les preguntó:
— ¿Cuántos panes tienen ustedes?
Ellos contestaron:
— Siete.
6 Jesús dispuso que la gente se sentara en el suelo. Luego tomó los siete panes, dio gracias a Dios, los partió y se los fue dando a sus discípulos para que ellos los distribuyeran. Y los discípulos los distribuyeron entre la gente. 7 Tenían además unos cuantos peces; Jesús los bendijo y mandó que los repartieran. 8 Todos comieron hasta quedar satisfechos, y todavía se recogieron siete espuertas de los trozos sobrantes de pan. 9 Luego Jesús despidió a la multitud, que era de unas cuatro mil personas. 10 A continuación subió a la barca con sus discípulos y se dirigió a la región de Dalmanuta.
Petición de una señal milagrosa (Mt 16,1-4)
11 Llegaron los fariseos y se pusieron a discutir con Jesús. Para tenderle una trampa, le pidieron que hiciera alguna señal milagrosa de parte de Dios. 12 Pero Jesús, suspirando profundamente, dijo:
— ¿Por qué pide esta gente una señal milagrosa? ¡Les aseguro que no se les dará señal alguna! 13 Y, dejándolos, se embarcó de nuevo y pasó a la otra orilla del lago.
El pan y la levadura de los fariseos y de Herodes (Mt 16,5-12)
14 Los discípulos habían olvidado llevar pan. Solamente tenían uno en la barca. 15 Jesús les recomendó:
— Miren, cuídense de la levadura de los fariseos y de Herodes.
16 Los discípulos comentaban unos con otros: “Esto lo dice porque no hemos traído pan”. 17 Pero, dándose cuenta de ello, Jesús les dijo:
— ¿Por qué están comentando que les falta el pan? ¿Tan embotada tienen la mente que no son capaces de entender ni comprender nada? 18 ¡Ustedes tienen ojos, pero no ven; tienen oídos, pero no oyen! ¿Ya no se acuerdan 19 de cuando repartí cinco panes entre cinco mil personas? ¿Cuántos cestos llenos de trozos sobrantes recogieron?
Le contestaron:
— Doce.
20 — Y cuando repartí siete panes entre cuatro mil personas, ¿cuántas espuertas de trozos sobrantes recogieron?
Le contestaron:
— Siete.
21 Y Jesús les dijo:
— ¿Y aún siguen sin entender?
Curación de un ciego en Betsaida
22 Cuando llegaron a Betsaida, le presentaron a Jesús un ciego y le pidieron que lo tocase. 23 Jesús tomó de la mano al ciego y lo condujo fuera de la aldea. Allí le untó los ojos con saliva, puso las manos sobre él y le preguntó:
— ¿Ves algo?
24 El ciego abrió los ojos y dijo:
— Veo a la gente. Son como árboles que andan. 25 Jesús le puso otra vez las manos sobre los ojos, y entonces el ciego comenzó a ver perfectamente. Estaba curado y hasta de lejos podía ver todo con toda claridad. 26 Después Jesús lo mandó a su casa, encargándole que ni siquiera entrase en la aldea.
Declaración de Pedro acerca de Jesús (Mt 16,13-20; Lc 9,18-21)
27 Jesús y sus discípulos se fueron a las aldeas de Cesarea de Filipo. Por el camino les preguntó:
— ¿Quién dice la gente que soy yo?
28 Ellos contestaron:
— Unos dicen que eres Juan el Bautista; otros, que Elías, y otros, que alguno de los profetas.
29 Jesús volvió a preguntarles:
— Y ustedes, ¿quién dicen que soy?
Entonces Pedro declaró:
— ¡Tú eres el Mesías!
30 Pero Jesús les mandó que no hablaran a nadie sobre él.
III.— REVELACIÓN DE JESÚS COMO MESÍAS SUFRIENTE (8,31—16,8)
Hacia Jerusalén (8,31—10,52)
Jesús anuncia por primera vez su muerte y su resurrección (Mt 16,21-23; Lc 9,22)
31 Entonces Jesús empezó a explicarles que el Hijo del hombre tenía que sufrir mucho; que había de ser rechazado por los ancianos del pueblo, los jefes de los sacerdotes y los maestros de la ley; que luego lo matarían, pero que al tercer día resucitaría. 32 Les hablaba con toda claridad. Pedro entonces, llevándolo aparte, comenzó a reprenderlo. 33 Pero Jesús se volvió y, mirando a sus discípulos, reprendió a su vez a Pedro, diciéndole:
— ¡Apártate de mí, Satanás! ¡Tú no piensas como piensa Dios, sino como piensa la gente!
34 Luego Jesús convocó a la gente y a sus propios discípulos y les dijo:
— Si alguno quiere ser discípulo mío, deberá olvidarse de sí mismo, cargar con su cruz y seguirme. 35 Porque el que quiera salvar su vida, la perderá; pero el que entregue su vida por mi causa y por la causa de la buena noticia, ese la salvará. 36 Pues ¿de qué le sirve a uno ganar el mundo entero si pierde su propia vida? 37 ¿O qué podrá dar una persona a cambio de su vida? 38 Pues bien, si alguno se avergüenza de mí y de mi mensaje delante de esta gente infiel y pecadora, también el Hijo del hombre se avergonzará de él cuando venga rodeado de la gloria de su Padre y acompañado de los santos ángeles.

Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand(A)(B)(C)
8 During those days another large crowd gathered. Since they had nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples to him and said, 2 “I have compassion for these people;(D) they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. 3 If I send them home hungry, they will collapse on the way, because some of them have come a long distance.”
4 His disciples answered, “But where in this remote place can anyone get enough bread to feed them?”
5 “How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked.
“Seven,” they replied.
6 He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. When he had taken the seven loaves and given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people, and they did so. 7 They had a few small fish as well; he gave thanks for them also and told the disciples to distribute them.(E) 8 The people ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.(F) 9 About four thousand were present. After he had sent them away, 10 he got into the boat with his disciples and went to the region of Dalmanutha.
11 The Pharisees came and began to question Jesus. To test him, they asked him for a sign from heaven.(G) 12 He sighed deeply(H) and said, “Why does this generation ask for a sign? Truly I tell you, no sign will be given to it.” 13 Then he left them, got back into the boat and crossed to the other side.
The Yeast of the Pharisees and Herod
14 The disciples had forgotten to bring bread, except for one loaf they had with them in the boat. 15 “Be careful,” Jesus warned them. “Watch out for the yeast(I) of the Pharisees(J) and that of Herod.”(K)
16 They discussed this with one another and said, “It is because we have no bread.”
17 Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked them: “Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Are your hearts hardened?(L) 18 Do you have eyes but fail to see, and ears but fail to hear? And don’t you remember? 19 When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?”
“Twelve,”(M) they replied.
20 “And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?”
They answered, “Seven.”(N)
21 He said to them, “Do you still not understand?”(O)
Jesus Heals a Blind Man at Bethsaida
22 They came to Bethsaida,(P) and some people brought a blind man(Q) and begged Jesus to touch him. 23 He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. When he had spit(R) on the man’s eyes and put his hands on(S) him, Jesus asked, “Do you see anything?”
24 He looked up and said, “I see people; they look like trees walking around.”
25 Once more Jesus put his hands on the man’s eyes. Then his eyes were opened, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly. 26 Jesus sent him home, saying, “Don’t even go into[a] the village.”
Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah(T)
27 Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, “Who do people say I am?”
28 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist;(U) others say Elijah;(V) and still others, one of the prophets.”
29 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”
Peter answered, “You are the Messiah.”(W)
30 Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him.(X)
Jesus Predicts His Death(Y)
31 He then began to teach them that the Son of Man(Z) must suffer many things(AA) and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law,(AB) and that he must be killed(AC) and after three days(AD) rise again.(AE) 32 He spoke plainly(AF) about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.
33 But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. “Get behind me, Satan!”(AG) he said. “You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”
The Way of the Cross
34 Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.(AH) 35 For whoever wants to save their life[b] will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it.(AI) 36 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? 37 Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 38 If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man(AJ) will be ashamed of them(AK) when he comes(AL) in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”
