Jesus Feeds More than Four Thousand People(A)
8 At that time, after a large crowd again had gathered together with nothing to eat, Jesus[a] called his disciples and told them, 2 “I have compassion for the crowd, because they’ve already been with me for three days and have nothing to eat. 3 If I send them away to their homes hungry, they’ll faint on the road. Some of them have come a long distance.”
4 His disciples answered him, “Where could anyone get enough bread to feed these people out here in the wilderness?”
5 He asked them, “How many loaves of bread do you have?”
“Seven,” they said.
6 So he ordered the crowd to sit down on the ground. Then he took the seven loaves and gave thanks. He broke them in pieces and kept giving them to his disciples to distribute. So they served them to the crowd. 7 They also had a few small fish. He blessed them and said that the fish[b] should also be distributed. 8 The people[c] ate and were filled. Then the disciples[d] picked up the leftover pieces—seven large baskets full. 9 Now about 4,000 men were there. Then he sent them on their way. 10 Immediately he got into a boat with his disciples and went to the region of Dalmanutha.[e]
Interpreting the Time(B)
11 The Pharisees arrived and began arguing with Jesus.[f] They tested him by demanding from him a sign from heaven. 12 He sighed deeply in his spirit and remarked, “Why do those living today[g] demand a sign? I tell all of you[h] with certainty, no sign will be given to this generation.” 13 Leaving them, he got into a boat again and crossed to the other side.
The Yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees(C)
14 Now the disciples[i] had forgotten to take any bread along, but they had one loaf with them in the boat. 15 Jesus[j] had been warning them, “Watch out! Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod!”[k]
16 So they were discussing with one another the fact that they didn’t have any bread. 17 Knowing this, Jesus[l] asked them, “Why are you discussing the fact that you don’t have any bread? Don’t you understand or perceive yet? Are your hearts hardened? 18 Do you have eyes, but fail to see? Do you have ears, but fail to hear?[m] Don’t you remember? 19 When I broke the five loaves for the 5,000, how many baskets did you fill with leftover pieces?”
They told him, “Twelve.”
20 “When I broke[n] the seven loaves[o] for the 4,000, how many large baskets did you fill with the leftover pieces?”
They told him, “Seven.”
21 Then he asked them, “Don’t you understand yet?”
Jesus Heals a Blind Man in Bethsaida
22 As they came to Bethsaida, some people[p] brought a blind man to Jesus[q] and begged him to touch him.[r] 23 Jesus[s] took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village. He spit into his eyes, placed his hands on him, and asked him, “Do you see anything?”
24 The man[t] looked up and said, “I see people, but they look like trees walking around.” 25 Then Jesus[u] placed his hands on the man’s[v] eyes again, and he saw clearly. His sight was restored, and he saw everything perfectly, even from a distance.
26 Then Jesus[w] sent him home, saying, “Don’t go into the village or tell anyone in the village.”[x]
Peter Declares His Faith in Jesus(D)
27 Then Jesus and his disciples set out for the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he was asking his disciples, “Who do people say I am?”
28 They answered him, “Some say[y] John the Baptist, others Elijah, and still others one of the prophets.”
29 Then he began to ask them, “But who do you say I am?”
Peter answered him, “You are the Messiah!”[z] 30 Jesus[aa] sternly ordered them not to tell anyone about him.
Jesus Predicts His Death and Resurrection(E)
31 Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man would have to suffer a great deal and be rejected by the elders, the high priests, and the scribes. Then he would be killed, but after three days he would rise again. 32 He was speaking about this matter quite openly.
Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. 33 But turning and looking at his disciples, Jesus[ab] rebuked Peter, saying, “Get behind me, Satan, because you’re not thinking God’s thoughts, but human thoughts!”
34 Then Jesus[ac] called the crowd to himself along with his disciples and told them, “If anyone wants to follow me, he must deny himself, pick up his cross, and follow me continuously, 35 because whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and for the gospel will save it. 36 What profit will a person have if he gains the whole world and forfeits his life? 37 Indeed, what can a person give in exchange for his life? 38 If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes with the holy angels in his Father’s glory.”

Four Thousand Fed
8 In those days, when there was again a large crowd [gathered before Him] and they had nothing to eat, Jesus called His disciples and told them,(A) 2 “I feel compassion for the crowd; they have been with Me now for three days and have nothing [left] to eat. 3 If I send them away to their homes hungry, they will faint [from exhaustion] on the road; because some of them have come a long way.” 4 His disciples replied to Him, “Where will anyone be able to find enough bread here in this isolated place to feed these people?” 5 He asked them, “How many loaves [of bread] do you have?” They said, “Seven.” 6 He directed the people to sit down on the ground; and taking the seven loaves, He gave thanks and broke them, and [repeatedly] gave them to His disciples to set before them, and they served the crowd. 7 They also had a few small fish; and when Jesus had blessed them [and given thanks], He ordered these [fish] to be set before them as well. 8 And the people ate and were satisfied; and they picked up seven large baskets full of the broken pieces that were left over. 9 About four thousand [men] were there [besides women and children]; and He sent them away. 10 Then immediately He got into the boat with His disciples and went to the district of [a]Dalmanutha.
11 The Pharisees came out and began to argue [contentiously and debate] with Him, demanding from Him a sign from heaven, to test Him [because of their unbelief]. 12 He groaned and sighed deeply in His spirit and said, “Why does this generation demand a sign? I assure you and most solemnly say to you, [b]no sign will be given to this generation!” 13 Leaving them, He again boarded the boat and left for the other side.
14 Now the disciples had forgotten to bring bread, and they had only one loaf with them in the boat. 15 Jesus repeatedly ordered them, saying, “Watch out! Beware of the [c]leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.” 16 They began discussing this with one another, saying, “It is because we have no bread [that He said this].” 17 Jesus, aware of this [discussion], said to them, “Why are you discussing [the fact] that you have no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Are your hearts hardened?(B) 18 Though you have eyes, do you not see? And though you have ears, do you not hear and listen [to what I have said]? And do you not remember,(C) 19 when I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces you picked up?” They answered, “Twelve.” 20 “And [when I broke] the seven [loaves] for the four thousand, how many large baskets full of broken pieces did you pick up?” And they answered, “Seven.” 21 And He was saying to them, “Do you still not understand?”
22 Then they came to Bethsaida; and some people brought a blind man to Jesus and begged Him to touch him. 23 Taking the blind man by the hand, He led him out of the village; and after spitting on his eyes and laying His hands on him, He asked him, “Do you see anything?” 24 And he looked up and said, “I see people, but [they look] like trees, walking around.” 25 Then again Jesus laid His hands on his eyes; and the man stared intently and [his sight] was [completely] restored, and he began to see everything clearly. 26 And He sent him to his home, saying, “Do not even enter the village.”
Peter’s Confession of Christ
27 Then Jesus and His disciples went out to the villages of [d]Caesarea Philippi; and on the way He asked His disciples, “Who do people say that I am?”(D) 28 They answered Him, “John the Baptist; and others say Elijah; but others, one of the prophets.” 29 And He asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter replied to Him, “You [in contrast to the others] are the Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed).” 30 Then Jesus strictly warned them not to tell anyone about Him.
31 And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must [of necessity] suffer many things and be rejected [as the Messiah] by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and must be put to death, and after three days rise [from death to life].(E) 32 He was stating the matter plainly [not holding anything back]. Then Peter took Him aside and began to reprimand Him. 33 But turning around [with His back to Peter] and seeing His disciples, He rebuked Peter, saying, “Get behind Me, Satan; for your mind is not set on God’s will or His values and purposes, but on what pleases man.”
34 Jesus called the crowd together with His disciples, and said to them, “If anyone wishes to follow Me [as My disciple], he must deny himself [set aside selfish interests], and [e]take up his cross [expressing a willingness to endure whatever may come] and follow Me [believing in Me, conforming to My example in living and, if need be, suffering or perhaps dying because of faith in Me]. 35 For whoever wishes to save his life [in this world] will [eventually] lose it [through death], but whoever loses his life [in this world] for My sake and the gospel’s will save it [from the consequences of sin and separation from God].(F) 36 For what does it benefit a man to gain the whole world [with all its pleasures], and forfeit his soul? 37 For what will a man give in exchange for his soul and eternal life [in God’s kingdom]? 38 For whoever is ashamed [here and now] of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”

16 Ei au început să vorbească unii cu alţii şi să spună: „Ne zice aşa pentru că nu avem pâini!“ 17 Înţelegând aceasta, Isus le-a zis:
– De ce vorbiţi între voi că n-aveţi pâini? Tot nu pricepeţi, nici nu înţelegeţi? Aveţi inima împietrită? 18 Aveţi ochi, dar nu vedeţi şi aveţi urechi, dar nu auziţi?[c] Nu vă mai amintiţi, 19 atunci când am frânt cele cinci pâini la cei cinci mii de oameni, câte coşuri pline cu firimituri aţi adunat?
– Douăsprezece, I-au răspuns ei.
20 – Iar când am frânt cele şapte pâini la cei patru mii de bărbaţi, câte coşuri pline cu firimituri aţi adunat?
– Şapte, au răspuns ei.
21 Atunci El le-a zis:
– Tot nu înţelegeţi?
Isus vindecă un orb la Betsaida
22 Au venit în Betsaida. I-au adus un orb şi L-au rugat să Se atingă de el. 23 Isus l-a luat pe orb de mână şi l-a dus afară din sat. A scuipat pe ochii acestuia, Şi-a pus mâinile peste el şi l-a întrebat:
– Vezi ceva?
24 Omul s-a uitat şi a zis:
– Văd nişte oameni, dar mi se par ca nişte copaci care umblă!
25 Atunci Isus Şi-a pus din nou mâinile peste ochii acestuia, iar omul a privit ţintă şi i-a revenit vederea; acum el vedea toate lucrurile clar. 26 Isus l-a trimis acasă, spunându-i:
– Să nu intri în sat (şi nici să nu spui cuiva în sat)[d]!
Mărturisirea de credinţă a lui Petru
27 Isus şi ucenicii Lui s-au dus spre satele Cezareii lui Filip[e]. Pe drum, Isus i-a întrebat pe ucenicii Săi:
– Cine zic oamenii că sunt Eu?
28 Ei I-au răspuns:
– Unii zic că eşti Ioan Botezătorul, alţii zic că eşti Ilie, iar alţii zic că eşti unul dintre profeţi.
29 – Dar voi cine ziceţi că sunt Eu? i-a mai întrebat El.
Petru a răspuns:
– Tu eşti Cristosul!
30 Isus i-a avertizat să nu spună nimănui despre El.
Isus vorbeşte despre moartea şi învierea Sa
31 Apoi a început să-i înveţe că Fiul Omului trebuie să sufere mult[f] şi să fie respins de către bătrâni[g], de către conducătorii preoţilor şi de către cărturari, să fie omorât, iar după trei zile să învie. 32 Le vorbea deschis despre aceasta. Petru însă L-a luat deoparte şi a început să-L mustre.
33 Dar Isus S-a întors, s-a uitat la ucenicii Săi şi l-a mustrat pe Petru, zicând: „Înapoia Mea, Satan[h], căci tu nu te gândeşti la lucrurile lui Dumnezeu, ci la lucrurile oamenilor!“
34 Apoi a chemat mulţimea şi pe ucenicii Săi şi le-a zis: „Dacă vrea cineva să vină după Mine, să se lepede de sine, să-şi ia crucea şi să Mă urmeze! 35 Căci oricine vrea să-şi salveze viaţa[i], o va pierde, dar cel ce-şi pierde viaţa pentru Mine şi pentru Evanghelie, o va salva. 36 Şi la ce i-ar folosi unui om să câştige întreaga lume, dacă şi-ar pierde sufletul? 37 Sau ce va da un om în schimbul sufletului său? 38 Căci de cel ce îi va fi ruşine de Mine şi de cuvintele Mele, în această generaţie adulteră şi păcătoasă, de acela Îi va fi ruşine şi Fiului Omului când va veni în slava Tatălui Său, cu sfinţii îngeri.“
