The Yeast of the Pharisees and Herod

¹⁴The disciples had forgotten to bring bread, except for one loaf they had with them in the boat. ¹⁵“Be careful,” Jesus warned them. “Watch out for the yeast^(A) of the Pharisees^(B) and that of Herod.”^(C)

¹⁶They discussed this with one another and said, “It is because we have no bread.”

¹⁷Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked them: “Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Are your hearts hardened?^(D) ¹⁸Do you have eyes but fail to see, and ears but fail to hear? And don’t you remember? ¹⁹When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?”

“Twelve,”^(E) they replied.

²⁰“And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?”

They answered, “Seven.”^(F)

²¹He said to them, “Do you still not understand?”^(G)

⁸Among the gods^(A) there is none like you,^(B) Lord;
    no deeds can compare with yours.
⁹All the nations you have made
    will come^(C) and worship^(D) before you, Lord;
    they will bring glory^(E) to your name.
¹⁰For you are great^(F) and do marvelous deeds;^(G)
    you alone^(H) are God.

¹¹Teach me your way,^(I) Lord,
    that I may rely on your faithfulness;^(J)
give me an undivided^(K) heart,
    that I may fear^(L) your name.
¹²I will praise you, Lord my God, with all my heart;^(M)
    I will glorify your name forever.
¹³For great is your love toward me;
    you have delivered me^(N) from the depths,
    from the realm of the dead.^(O)

¹⁴Arrogant foes are attacking me, O God;
    ruthless people are trying to kill me—
    they have no regard for you.^(P)
¹⁵But you, Lord, are a compassionate and gracious^(Q) God,
    slow to anger,^(R) abounding^(S) in love and faithfulness.^(T)
¹⁶Turn to me^(U) and have mercy^(V) on me;
    show your strength^(W) in behalf of your servant;
save me, because I serve you
    just as my mother did.^(X)
¹⁷Give me a sign^(Y) of your goodness,
    that my enemies may see it and be put to shame,
    for you, Lord, have helped me and comforted me.
