The Demand for a Sign

¹¹ The Pharisees came and began to argue with him, asking him for a sign from heaven, to test him.^(A)

⁹ We must not put Christ^[a] to the test, as some of them did, and were destroyed by serpents.^(A)

The Sign of Jonah

³⁸ Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to him, “Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you.”^(A)

¹⁵ Now we count the arrogant happy; evildoers not only prosper, but when they put God to the test they escape.”^(A)

¹⁶ “Do not put the Lord your God to the test, as you tested him at Massah.^(A)

²² For Jews ask for signs and Greeks desire wisdom, ²³ but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to gentiles,^(A)

⁴⁸ Then Jesus said to him, “Unless you^[a] see signs and wonders you will not believe.”^(A)

¹⁶ Others, to test him, kept demanding from him a sign from heaven.^(A)

⁷ He called the place Massah^[a] and Meribah,^[b] because the Israelites quarreled and tested the Lord, saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”^(A)

⁴⁸ Has any one of the authorities or of the Pharisees believed in him?^(A)
