Mga Nakaugaliang Katuruan(A)
7 Lumapit kay Jesus ang mga Pariseo kasama ang ilang tagapagturo ng Kautusan na galing pa sa Jerusalem. 2 Nakita nila ang ilan sa mga alagad niya na kumakain nang marumi ang mga kamay dahil hindi nahugasan ayon sa kaugalian ng mga Judio.
3 (Sapagkat ang mga Judio, lalo na ang mga Pariseo, ay hindi kumakain hangga't hindi muna sila nakapaghuhugas ng kamay ayon sa kaugaliang minana nila mula sa kanilang mga ninuno. 4 Hindi rin sila kumakain ng anumang galing sa palengke nang hindi muna ito hinuhugasan.[a] Marami pa silang sinusunod na katuruang minana, tulad ng paghuhugas ng mga tasa, pitsel, sisidlang tanso, [at mga higaan].[b]) 5 Kaya tinanong si Jesus ng mga Pariseo at ng mga tagapagturo ng Kautusan, “Bakit hindi sumusunod ang mga alagad mo sa mga turo ng ating mga ninuno? Kumakain sila nang hindi man lamang naghuhugas ng kamay ayon sa kaugalian.”
6 Sinagot(B) sila ni Jesus, “Mga mapagkunwari! Tama nga ang sinabi ni Isaias tungkol sa inyo, nang kanyang isulat,
‘Ang paggalang sa akin ng bayang ito ay pakunwari lamang,
sapagkat ito'y sa bibig at hindi sa puso bumubukal.
7 Walang kabuluhan ang kanilang pagsamba,
sapagkat itinuturo nilang galing sa Diyos ang kanilang mga utos.’
8 Binabaliwala ninyo ang utos ng Diyos, at ang sinusunod ninyo'y mga tradisyon ng tao.”
9 Sinabi pa ni Jesus, “Ang gagaling ninyo! Para lamang masunod ang inyong mga tradisyon, pinapawalang-bisa ninyo ang utos ng Diyos! 10 Halimbawa,(C) iniutos ni Moises na ‘Igalang mo ang iyong ama at ina’, at ‘Ang sinumang lumait sa kanyang ama o ina ay dapat patayin.’ 11 Ngunit itinuturo naman ninyo na kapag sinabi ng isang tao sa kanyang ama o ina, ‘Naihandog ko na sa Diyos[c] ang mga tulong ko sa inyo’; 12 ang taong iyon ay hindi na ninyo pinapatulong sa kanilang mga magulang. 13 Sa gayong paraan, pinapawalang-bisa ninyo ang salita ng Diyos sa pamamagitan ng mga itinuturo ninyo. At marami pa kayong ginagawang katulad nito.”
Ang Nagpaparumi sa Tao(D)
14 Muling pinalapit ni Jesus ang mga tao at sinabi sa kanila, “Makinig kayong lahat at unawain ang aking sasabihin! 15 Hindi nagiging marumi ang isang tao dahil sa pagkaing pumapasok sa kanyang bibig, kundi dahil sa lumalabas dito. [16 Makinig ang may pandinig!]”[d]
17 Iniwan ni Jesus ang mga tao, at nang makapasok na siya sa bahay, siya'y tinanong ng kanyang mga alagad tungkol sa talinghaga. 18 “Pati ba naman kayo ay hindi pa rin makaunawa?” tanong ni Jesus. “Hindi ba ninyo alam na hindi nagiging marumi ang isang tao dahil sa pagkaing ipinapasok niya sa kanyang bibig, 19 sapagkat hindi naman iyon pumapasok sa kanyang puso, kundi sa tiyan, at pagkatapos ay idinudumi.” (Sa ganitong paraan ay ipinahayag ni Jesus na ang lahat ng pagkain ay maaaring kainin.)
20 At sinabi rin niya, “Ang lumalabas sa tao ang nagpaparumi sa kanya sa paningin ng Diyos. 21 Sapagkat sa loob, sa puso ng tao, nagmumula ang masasamang isipang nag-uudyok sa kanya upang makiapid, magnakaw, pumatay, 22 mangalunya, mag-imbot, gumawa ng kasamaan tulad ng pandaraya, kahalayan, pagkainggit, paninirang-puri, pagmamayabang, at kahangalan. 23 Ang lahat ng masasamang bagay na ito ay nanggagaling sa puso at dahil sa mga ito ay nagiging marumi ang tao.”
Pinagaling ang Anak ng Babaing Taga-Tiro(E)
24 Umalis doon si Jesus at nagpunta sa lugar na malapit sa Tiro [at ng Sidon].[e] Tumuloy siya sa isang bahay doon at ayaw niyang malaman ninuman na naroon siya. Subalit hindi ganoon ang nangyari. 25 Ang pagdating niya'y nabalitaan ng isang babae na may anak na babaing sinasapian ng masamang espiritu. Pumunta agad kay Jesus ang ina at nagpatirapa sa kanyang harapan. 26 Ang babaing ito'y isang Hentil na taga-Sirofenicia. Nakiusap ito kay Jesus na palayasin ang demonyong sumapi sa kanyang anak. 27 Ngunit sinabi ni Jesus, “Kailangang ang mga anak muna ang pakainin. Hindi dapat kunin ang pagkain ng mga anak upang ihagis sa mga aso.”
28 Tugon ng babae, “Tunay nga po, Panginoon, ngunit maging ang mga asong nasa ilalim ng mesa ay kumakain ng mga nalalaglag mula sa kinakain ng mga anak.”
29 Kaya't sinabi sa kanya ni Jesus, “Dahil sa sinabi mo, maaari ka nang umuwi. Iniwan na ng demonyo ang iyong anak.”
30 Umuwi ang babae at naratnan niya sa higaan ang bata. Iniwan na nga ito ng demonyo.
Ang Pagpapagaling sa Taong Bingi at Pipi
31 Umalis si Jesus mula sa lupain ng Tiro, dumaan sa Sidon at nagtuloy sa Lawa ng Galilea. Tinahak niya ang lupain ng Decapolis. 32 Dinala ng mga tao sa kanya ang isang lalaking bingi at may kapansanan sa pagsasalita, at nakiusap sila sa kanya na ipatong niya rito ang kanyang kamay. 33 Inilayo muna ni Jesus sa karamihan ang lalaki, at isinuot ang kanyang mga daliri sa mga tainga nito. Pagkatapos, dumura si Jesus at ipinahid ito sa dila ng pipi. 34 Tumingala si Jesus sa langit, nagbuntong-hininga at sinabi sa lalaki, “Effata,” na ang ibig sabihi'y, “Mabuksan!”
35 Noon di'y nakarinig ang lalaki at nakapagsalita na nang maayos. 36 Sinabi ni Jesus sa mga tao na huwag ipamalita ito, ngunit habang pinagbabawalan niya ang mga tao ay lalo naman nila itong ipinamamalita. 37 Buong paghangang sinasabi nila, “Napakahusay ng lahat ng kanyang ginagawa! Binibigyan niya ng pandinig ang mga bingi at pinapagsalita ang mga pipi!”

The Things that Truly Please God(A)
7 When some Pharisees and some ·teachers of the law [scribes] came from Jerusalem, they gathered around Jesus. 2 They saw that some of Jesus’ ·followers [disciples] ate food with hands that were not clean, that is, they hadn’t [ceremonially] washed them. 3 ([For] The Pharisees and all the Jews never eat before washing their hands ·in the way required [L with a fist; C the meaning of the idiom is uncertain; it could mean “with a handful of water,” “with cupped hand,” “up to the wrist” or something else] by ·their unwritten laws [L the traditions of the elders]. 4 ·And when they buy something in the market, they never eat it [or, And when they come from the market (where they might have touched something “unclean”), they do not eat] until they wash themselves in a special way. They also ·follow [hold fast to; observe] many other ·unwritten laws [traditions], such as the washing of cups, pitchers, and pots.[a])
5 The Pharisees and the ·teachers of the law [scribes] asked Jesus, “Why don’t your ·followers [disciples] ·obey [walk according to] the ·unwritten laws which have been handed down to us [traditions of the elders]? Why do they eat their food with hands that are ·not clean [defiled]?”
6 Jesus answered, “Isaiah was right when he ·spoke [prophesied] about you hypocrites. ·He wrote [As it is written],
‘These people show honor to me with ·words [L their lips],
but their hearts are far from me.
7 Their worship of me is ·worthless [futile; in vain].
The things they teach are nothing but human ·rules [commandments; Is. 29:13].’
8 You ·have stopped following [neglected; abandoned] the commands of God, and you ·follow [hold on to] only human ·teachings[b] [traditions].”
9 Then Jesus said to them, “You ·cleverly ignore [are very good at ignoring/despising] the commands of God so you can follow your own ·teachings [tradition]. 10 [For] Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’ [Ex. 20:12; Deut. 5:16], and ‘Anyone who ·says cruel things to [speaks evil of; curses] his father or mother must be put to death’ [Ex. 21:17; Lev. 20:9]. 11 But you say a person can tell his father or mother, ‘I have something I could use to help you, but it is Corban—a gift to God.’ [C Corban is a Hebrew term meaning dedicated or set aside to God.] 12 You no longer let that person ·use that money [do anything] for his father or his mother. 13 By your own ·rules [tradition], which you ·teach people [have handed down], you are ·rejecting [nullifying; canceling] what God said. And you do many things like that.”
14 After Jesus called the crowd to him again, he said, “Listen to me, everyone, and understand what I am saying. 15 There is nothing people put into their bodies that ·makes them unclean [pollutes/defiles them]. [But rather] People are ·made unclean [polluted; defiled] by the things that come out of them. |16 ·Let those with ears use them and listen [see 4:23].|”[c]
17 When Jesus left the ·people [crowd] and went into the house, his ·followers [disciples] asked him about this ·story [parable; see 3:23]. 18 Jesus said, “·Do you still not understand [Are you so dull]? ·Surely you know [L Don’t you know…?] that nothing that enters someone from the outside can make that person ·unclean [polluted; defiled]. 19 [Because] It does not go into the ·mind [heart], but into the stomach. Then it goes ·out of the body [L into the sewer/latrine].” ·(When Jesus said this, he meant that no longer was any food unclean for people to eat.) [or, (In this way, Jesus cleansed all food.)]
20 And Jesus said, “The things that come out of people are the things that make them ·unclean [defiled]. 21 ·All these evil things begin inside people, in the mind [L For from within, out of human hearts, come]: evil ·thoughts [intentions; ideas], sexual sins, stealing, murder, adultery, 22 greed, ·evil actions [wickedness], ·lying [deceit], ·doing sinful things [indecency; lust; lewdness], ·jealousy [envy; L evil eye], ·speaking evil of others [slander; blasphemy], pride, and foolish living. 23 All these evil things come from inside and make people ·unclean [defiled].”
Jesus Helps a Gentile Woman(B)
24 Jesus left that place and went to the area around Tyre[d] [C a Gentile city on the coast north of Israel]. When he went into a house, he did not want anyone to know he was there, but he could not stay hidden. 25 A woman whose daughter had an ·evil [defiling; L unclean] spirit in her heard that he was there. So she ·quickly [immediately] came to Jesus and ·fell [bowed] at his feet. 26 She was ·Greek [a Gentile; C “Greek” is sometimes used for any non-Jew; Rom. 1:16], born in Phoenicia, in Syria. She ·begged [kept asking] Jesus to ·force [drive; cast] the demon out of her daughter.
27 Jesus told the woman, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and ·give [throw] it to the dogs. First let the children eat all they want.” [C “Children” refers to Israel; “dogs” to the Gentiles.]
28 But she answered, “Yes, Lord, but even the dogs under the table can eat the children’s crumbs.”
29 Then Jesus said, “Because of your answer, you may go. The demon has left your daughter.”
30 The woman went home and found her daughter lying in bed; the demon was gone.
Jesus Heals a Deaf Man(C)
31 Then Jesus left the area around Tyre and went through Sidon to Lake Galilee [T the Sea of Galilee], to the area of ·the Ten Towns [or Decapolis; C an area east of Lake Galilee that once had ten main towns; 5:20]. 32 While he was there, some people brought a man to him who was deaf and ·could not talk plainly [had a speech impediment]. The people begged Jesus to put his hand on the man to heal him.
33 Jesus led the man away from the crowd, by himself. He put his fingers in the man’s ears and then spit and touched the man’s tongue. [C The use of saliva is mentioned in other ancient accounts of healing, and elsewhere in the Gospels; see 8:23; John 9:6.] 34 Looking up to heaven, he sighed and said to the man, “Ephphatha!” (This means [C in Aramaic], “Be opened.”) 35 Instantly the man was able to hear and to use his tongue so that he spoke clearly.
36 Jesus ·commanded [ordered; instructed] the people not to tell anyone about what happened. But the more he ·commanded [ordered; instructed] them, the more they ·told about [proclaimed] it. 37 They were completely amazed and said, “Jesus does everything well. He makes the deaf hear! And ·those who can’t talk [the mute] he makes able to speak.”

7 (A)And the Pharisees and some of the scribes *gathered around Him when they had come (B)from Jerusalem, 2 and had seen that some of His disciples were eating their bread with (C)defiled hands, that is, unwashed. 3 (For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they [a]carefully wash their hands, thus observing the (D)tradition of the elders; 4 and when they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they [b]wash themselves; and there are many other things which they have received in order to observe, such as the washing of (E)cups and pitchers and copper pots.) 5 And the Pharisees and the scribes *asked Him, “Why do Your disciples not walk according to the (F)tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with (G)defiled hands?” 6 And He said to them, “Rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written:
‘(H)This people honors Me with their lips,
But their heart is far away from Me.
7 (I)But in vain do they worship Me,
Teaching as doctrines the commands of men.’
8 Leaving the commandment of God, you hold to the (J)tradition of men.”
9 And He was also saying to them, “You are good at setting aside the commandment of God in order to keep your (K)tradition. 10 For Moses said, ‘(L)Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘(M)He who speaks evil of father or mother, is to [c]be put to death’; 11 but you say, ‘If a man says to his father or his mother, whatever you might benefit from me is (N)Corban (that is to say, [d]given to God),’ 12 you no longer leave him to do anything for his father or his mother; 13 thus invalidating the word of God by your (O)tradition which you have handed down; and you do many things such as that.”
The Heart of Man
14 And after He called the crowd to Him again, He began saying to them, “Listen to Me, all of you, and understand: 15 there is nothing outside the man which can defile him if it goes into him; but the things which proceed out of the man are what defile the man. 16 [e][And if anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.”]
17 And when He had left the crowd and entered (P)the house, (Q)His disciples were asking Him about the parable. 18 And He *said to them, “Are you lacking understanding in this way as well? Do you not [f]perceive that whatever goes into the man from outside cannot defile him, 19 because it does not go into his heart, but into his stomach, and goes to the sewer?” (Thus He declared (R)all foods (S)clean.) 20 And He was saying, “(T)That which proceeds out of the man, that is what defiles the man. 21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed the evil thoughts, sexual immoralities, thefts, murders, adulteries, 22 coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, [g](U)envy, slander, [h]pride, and foolishness. 23 All these evil things proceed from within and defile the man.”
A Gentile Woman’s Faith
24 (V)Now Jesus stood up and went away from there to the region of (W)Tyre[i]. And when He had entered a house, He was wanting no one to know of it; [j]yet He could not escape notice. 25 But after hearing of Him, a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit immediately came and fell at His feet. 26 Now the woman was a [k]Greek, of Syrophoenician descent. And she kept asking Him to cast the demon out of her daughter. 27 And He was saying to her, “Let the children be satisfied first, for it is not [l]good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.” 28 But she answered and *said to Him, “Yes, Lord, but even the dogs under the table feed on the children’s crumbs.” 29 And He said to her, “Because of this [m]answer go; the demon has gone out of your daughter.” 30 And going back to her home, she found the child [n]lying on the bed, the demon having left.
The Deaf Hear, the Mute Speak
31 (X)And again He went out from the region of (Y)Tyre, and came through Sidon to (Z)the Sea of Galilee, within the region of the (AA)Decapolis. 32 And they *brought to Him one who was deaf and spoke with difficulty, and they *pleaded with Him to (AB)lay His hand on him. 33 (AC)And Jesus took him aside from the crowd, by himself, and put His fingers into his ears, and after (AD)spitting, He touched his tongue; 34 and looking up to heaven with a (AE)sigh, He *said to him, “Ephphatha!” that is, “Be opened!” 35 And his ears were opened, and the [o]impediment of his tongue [p]was removed, and he began speaking plainly. 36 And (AF)He gave them orders not to tell anyone; but the more He was ordering them, the more widely they (AG)continued to proclaim it. 37 And they were utterly astonished, saying, “He has done all things well; He makes even the deaf to hear and the mute to speak.”
