One day some Jewish religious leaders arrived from Jerusalem to investigate him, and noticed that some of his disciples failed to follow the usual Jewish rituals before eating. (For the Jews, especially the Pharisees, will never eat until they have sprinkled their arms to the elbows,[a] as required by their ancient traditions. So when they come home from the market, they must always sprinkle themselves in this way before touching any food. This is but one of many examples of laws and regulations they have clung to for centuries, and still follow, such as their ceremony of cleansing for pots, pans, and dishes.)

So the religious leaders asked him, “Why don’t your disciples follow our age-old customs? For they eat without first performing the washing ceremony.”

6-7 Jesus replied, “You bunch of hypocrites! Isaiah the prophet described you very well when he said, ‘These people speak very prettily about the Lord but they have no love for him at all. Their worship is a farce, for they claim that God commands the people to obey their petty rules.’ How right Isaiah was! For you ignore God’s specific orders and substitute your own traditions. You are simply rejecting God’s laws and trampling them under your feet for the sake of tradition.

10 “For instance, Moses gave you this law from God: ‘Honor your father and mother.’ And he said that anyone who speaks against his father or mother must die. 11 But you say it is perfectly all right for a man to disregard his needy parents, telling them, ‘Sorry, I can’t help you! For I have given to God what I could have given to you.’ 12-13 And so you break the law of God in order to protect your man-made tradition. And this is only one example. There are many, many others.”

14 Then Jesus called to the crowd to come and hear. “All of you listen,” he said, “and try to understand. 15-16 [b]Your souls aren’t harmed by what you eat, but by what you think and say!”

17 Then he went into a house to get away from the crowds, and his disciples asked him what he meant by the statement he had just made.

18 “Don’t you understand either?” he asked. “Can’t you see that what you eat won’t harm your soul? 19 For food doesn’t come in contact with your heart, but only passes through the digestive system.” (By saying this he showed that every kind of food is kosher.)

20 And then he added, “It is the thought-life that pollutes. 21 For from within, out of men’s hearts, come evil thoughts of lust, theft, murder, adultery, 22 wanting what belongs to others, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, pride, and all other folly. 23 All these vile things come from within; they are what pollute you and make you unfit for God.”

24 Then he left Galilee and went to the region of Tyre and Sidon,[c] and tried to keep it a secret that he was there, but couldn’t. For as usual the news of his arrival spread fast.

25 Right away a woman came to him whose little girl was possessed by a demon. She had heard about Jesus and now she came and fell at his feet, 26 and pled with him to release her child from the demon’s control. (But she was Syrophoenician—a “despised Gentile”!)

27 Jesus told her, “First I should help my own family—the Jews.[d] It isn’t right to take the children’s food and throw it to the dogs.”

28 She replied, “That’s true, sir, but even the puppies under the table are given some scraps from the children’s plates.”

29 “Good!” he said. “You have answered well—so well that I have healed your little girl. Go on home, for the demon has left her!”

30 And when she arrived home, her little girl was lying quietly in bed, and the demon was gone.

31 From Tyre he went to Sidon, then back to the Sea of Galilee by way of the Ten Towns. 32 A deaf man with a speech impediment was brought to him, and everyone begged Jesus to lay his hands on the man and heal him.

33 Jesus led him away from the crowd and put his fingers into the man’s ears, then spat and touched the man’s tongue with the spittle. 34 Then, looking up to heaven, he sighed and commanded, “Open!” 35 Instantly the man could hear perfectly and speak plainly!

36 Jesus told the crowd not to spread the news, but the more he forbade them, the more they made it known, 37 for they were overcome with utter amazement. Again and again they said, “Everything he does is wonderful; he even corrects deafness and stammering!”

Guds bud eller människors stadgar

Fariseerna och några skriftlärda som hade kommit från Jerusalem samlades kring honom. De hade sett att några av hans lärjungar åt med orena händer, det vill säga utan att tvätta händerna. - Fariseerna liksom alla andra judar äter inte utan att ha tvättat händerna med en handfull[a] vatten. De håller fast vid de äldstes stadgar. Och när de kommer från torget[b] äter de inte utan att först ha tvättat sig. Mycket annat har de också lärt sig att iaktta, som att skölja bägare, kannor och kopparkärl. - Fariseerna och de skriftlärda frågade honom: "Varför följer inte dina lärjungar de äldstes stadgar[c] utan äter med orena händer?" Han svarade dem: "Rätt profeterade Jesaja om er, ni hycklare. Hos honom står det skrivet: Detta folk ärar mig med sina läppar, men deras hjärtan är långt ifrån mig. [d] Förgäves dyrkar de mig, eftersom de läror de förkunnar är människobud. Ni upphäver Guds bud och håller er till människors stadgar."

Han sade också till dem: "Ni upphäver fullkomligt Guds bud för att hålla fast vid era egna stadgar. 10 Mose har sagt: Hedra din far och din mor [e] och: Den som förbannar sin far eller sin mor skall straffas med döden. 11 Men ni påstår att om någon säger till sin far eller mor: Vad du kunde ha fått av mig ger jag i stället som 'korban', som offergåva,[f] 12 då tillåter ni honom inte längre att göra något för sin far eller mor. 13 Ni upphäver Guds ord genom de stadgar som ni följer och för vidare. Och mycket annat sådant gör ni."

14 Jesus kallade till sig folket på nytt och sade: "Hör på mig allesammans och förstå: 15 Ingenting som utifrån går in i människan kan göra henne oren, men det som går ut ur människan, det orenar henne."[g] 17 När han hade lämnat folket och kommit hem, frågade hans lärjungar vad han menade med denna liknelse. 18 Han svarade dem: "Är ni också oförståndiga? Inser ni inte att det som utifrån går in i människan inte kan göra henne oren, 19 eftersom det inte går in i hennes hjärta utan ner i magen och ut på avträdet?" Därmed förklarade han all mat för ren. 20 Och han tillade: "Det som går ut ur människan, det gör henne oren. 21 Ty inifrån, från människans hjärta, utgår onda tankar, otukt, stöld, mord, 22 äktenskapsbrott, girighet, ondska, svek, lösaktighet, avund, hädelse, högmod och dårskap. 23 Allt detta onda kommer inifrån och gör människan oren."

En hednisk kvinnas tro

24 Sedan begav han sig därifrån och kom till Tyrus område. Där gick han in i ett hus. Han ville inte att någon skulle få veta det, men det kunde inte hållas hemligt. 25 En kvinna, vars dotter hade en oren ande, fick höra talas om honom, och hon kom genast och föll ner för hans fötter. 26 Det var en grekisk kvinna av syrisk-fenicisk härkomst. Hon bad att Jesus skulle driva ut den onde anden ur hennes dotter. 27 Jesus sade till henne: "Låt barnen först[h] få äta sig mätta. Det är inte rätt att ta brödet från barnen och kasta det åt hundarna." 28 Hon svarade honom: "Herre, hundarna under bordet äter också av barnens smulor." 29 Då sade han till henne: "För de ordens skull säger jag dig: Gå! Den onde anden har farit ut ur din dotter." 30 Och hon gick hem och fann barnet ligga på bädden. Den onde anden hade farit ut.

Jesus botar en dövstum

31 Därefter lämnade han Tyrus område och tog vägen över Sidon och gick sedan genom Dekapolis område till Galileiska sjön. 32 Och man förde till honom en som var döv och nästan stum och bad att han skulle lägga handen på honom. 33 Då tog han honom åt sidan, bort från folkskaran, stoppade fingrarna i hans öron, spottade och rörde vid hans tunga 34 och såg upp mot himlen, suckade och sade: "Effata!" - det betyder: Öppna dig! 35 Genast öppnades hans öron och hans tunga löstes, och han talade tydligt och klart. 36 Jesus förbjöd dem att tala om detta för någon, men ju mer han förbjöd dem, desto ivrigare var de att göra det känt. 37 Och folk blev utom sig av häpnad och sade: "Allt han har gjort är gott. De döva får han att höra och de stumma att tala."

The Traditions of the Elders

The(A) Pharisees(B) and some of the scribes(C) who had come from Jerusalem(D) gathered around him. They observed that some of his disciples were eating bread with unclean(E) – that is, unwashed – hands. (For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they give their hands a ceremonial washing, keeping the tradition of the elders. When they come from the marketplace,(F) they do not eat unless they have washed.(G) And there are many other customs they have received and keep, like the washing of cups, jugs, kettles, and dining couches.[a](H)) So the Pharisees(I) and the scribes(J) asked him, ‘Why don’t your disciples live[b] according to the tradition of the elders,(K) instead of eating bread with ceremonially unclean[c] hands? ’

He answered them, ‘Isaiah(L) prophesied(M) correctly about you hypocrites,(N) as it is written:(O)

This people honours(P) me with their lips,
but their heart is far from me.
They worship me in vain,
teaching(Q) as doctrines(R) human commands.[d](S)

Abandoning the command of God, you hold on to human tradition.’[e] He also said to them, ‘You have a fine way of invalidating God’s command in order to set up[f] your tradition! 10 For Moses(T) said: Honour your father and your mother;[g](U) and Whoever speaks evil of father or mother must be put to death.[h](V) 11 But you say, “If anyone tells his father or mother: Whatever benefit(W) you might have received from me is corban” ’ (that is, an offering(X) devoted to God), 12 ‘you no longer let him do anything for his father or mother. 13 You nullify the word of God(Y) by your tradition that you have handed(Z) down. And you do many other similar things.’

14 Summoning(AA) the crowd again, he told them, ‘Listen to me, all of you, and understand:(AB) 15 Nothing that goes into a person from outside can defile him but the things that come out of a person are what defile him.’[i]

17 When he went into the house away from the crowd, his disciples asked him about the parable. 18 He said to them, ‘Are you also as lacking in understanding? Don’t you realise that nothing going into a person from the outside can defile him? 19 For it doesn’t go into his heart but into the stomach(AC) and is eliminated’ (thus he declared all foods clean(AD)). 20 And he said, ‘What comes out of a person is what defiles him. 21 For from within, out of people’s hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immoralities,(AE) thefts, murders,(AF) 22 adulteries,(AG) greed,(AH) evil actions, deceit,(AI) self-indulgence,(AJ) envy,[j] slander,(AK) pride,(AL) and foolishness.(AM) 23 All these evil things come from within and defile a person.’

A Gentile Mother’s Faith

24 He got up and departed from(AN) there to the region of Tyre.[k](AO) He entered a house and did not want anyone to know it, but he could not escape notice. 25 Instead, immediately after hearing about him, a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit(AP) came and fell at his feet.(AQ) 26 The woman was a Gentile,[l](AR) a Syrophoenician by birth, and she was asking him to cast the demon(AS) out of her daughter. 27 He said to her, ‘Let the children be fed first, because it isn’t right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.’(AT)

28 But she replied to him, ‘Lord,(AU) even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.’

29 Then he told her, ‘Because of this reply, you may go. The demon has left your daughter.’ 30 When she went back to her home, she found her child lying on the bed, and the demon was gone.

Jesus Does Everything Well

31 Again, leaving the region of Tyre,(AV) he went by way of Sidon to the Sea of Galilee,(AW) through[m] the region of the Decapolis.(AX) 32 They brought to him a deaf(AY) man who had difficulty speaking(AZ) and begged Jesus to lay his hand on(BA) him. 33 So he took him away from the crowd in private. After putting his fingers in the man’s ears and spitting,(BB) he touched his tongue. 34 Looking up to heaven,(BC) he sighed deeply and said to him, ‘Ephphatha! ’[n] (that is, ‘Be opened! ’). 35 Immediately his ears were opened,(BD) his tongue was loosened, and he began to speak clearly.(BE) 36 He ordered them to tell no one,(BF) but the more he ordered them, the more they proclaimed it.(BG)

37 They were extremely astonished and said, ‘He has done everything well.(BH) He even makes the deaf(BI) hear and the mute speak.’(BJ)
