Traditions and Commandments

(A)Now when the Pharisees gathered to him, with some of the scribes (B)who had come from Jerusalem, they saw that some of his disciples ate with hands that were (C)defiled, that is, unwashed. (For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands properly,[a] holding to (D)the tradition of (E)the elders, and when they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash.[b] And there are many other traditions that they observe, such as (F)the washing of (G)cups and pots and copper vessels and dining couches.[c]) And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, “Why do your disciples not walk according to (H)the tradition of (I)the elders, (J)but eat with (K)defiled hands?” And he said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you (L)hypocrites, as it is written,

(M)“‘This people honors me with their lips,
    but their heart is far from me;
in vain do they worship me,
    teaching as (N)doctrines the commandments of men.’

You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men.”

And he said to them, “You have a fine way of (O)rejecting the commandment of God in order to establish your tradition! 10 For Moses said, (P)‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, (Q)‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’ 11 But you say, ‘If a man tells his father or his mother, “Whatever you would have gained from me is Corban”’ (that is, given to God)[d] 12 then you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother, 13 thus (R)making void the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And many such things you do.”

What Defiles a Person

14 And he called the people to him again and said to them, (S)“Hear me, all of you, and understand: 15 (T)There is nothing outside a person that by going into him can defile him, but the things that come out of a person are what defile him.”[e] 17 And when he had entered (U)the house and left the people, (V)his disciples asked him about the parable. 18 And he said to them, “Then (W)are you also without understanding? Do you not see that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him, 19 since it enters not his heart (X)but his stomach, and is expelled?”[f] ((Y)Thus he declared all foods clean.) 20 And he said, (Z)“What comes out of a person is what defiles him. 21 For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, (AA)murder, adultery, 22 coveting, wickedness, deceit, (AB)sensuality, (AC)envy, (AD)slander, (AE)pride, (AF)foolishness. 23 (AG)All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.”

The Syrophoenician Woman's Faith

24 And from there he arose and went away to the region of Tyre and Sidon.[g] And he entered a house and did not want anyone to know, yet he could not be hidden. 25 But immediately a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit heard of him and came and fell down at his feet. 26 (AH)Now the woman was a (AI)Gentile, (AJ)a Syrophoenician by birth. And she begged him to cast the demon out of her daughter. 27 And he said to her, “Let the children be (AK)fed first, for it is not right to take the children's bread and (AL)throw it to the dogs.” 28 But she answered him, “Yes, Lord; yet even the dogs under the table eat the children's (AM)crumbs.” 29 And he said to her, “For this statement you may (AN)go your way; the demon has left your daughter.” 30 And she went home and found the child lying in bed and the demon gone.

Jesus Heals a Deaf Man

31 (AO)Then he returned from the region of Tyre and went through Sidon to (AP)the Sea of Galilee, in the region of the (AQ)Decapolis. 32 And they brought to him (AR)a man who was deaf and (AS)had a speech impediment, and they begged him to (AT)lay his hand on him. 33 And (AU)taking him aside from the crowd privately, he put his fingers into his ears, and (AV)after spitting touched his tongue. 34 And (AW)looking up to heaven, (AX)he sighed and said to him, “Ephphatha,” that is, “Be opened.” 35 (AY)And his ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly. 36 And (AZ)Jesus[h] charged them to tell no one. But (BA)the more he charged them, the more zealously they proclaimed it. 37 And they were (BB)astonished beyond measure, saying, “He has done all things well. He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”

O que contamina o ser humano

(Mt 15.1-20)

Um dia, chegaram de Jerusalém uns fariseus e especialistas na Lei para falarem com Jesus. E notaram que alguns dos seus discípulos comiam com as mãos impuras, isto é, sem as lavarem. (Porque os judeus, sobretudo os que são fariseus, nunca comem sem lavar ritualmente as mãos, conforme o exigem as antigas tradições[a]. E quando voltam da rua para casa, devem sempre lavar-se deste modo antes de tocar em qualquer comida. Este é apenas um entre os muitos exemplos das leis a que se agarraram, tais como o ritual de purificação de vasilhas, panelas e pratos.) Os fariseus e especialistas na Lei perguntaram-lhe: “Porque não seguem os teus discípulos os costumes dos antigos e comem com as mãos impuras?”

Jesus respondeu: “Fingidos! Bem falou Isaías, o profeta, a vosso respeito:

‘Este povo honra-me de mim com os lábios,
mas o seu coração está longe de mim.
Os seus atos de adoração são vazios,
porque ensinam doutrinas criadas por homens.’[b]

Isaías bem tinha razão! Porque vocês desprezam as ordens expressas de Deus para porem no seu lugar as vossas próprias tradições. Rejeitam os mandamentos bem claros de Deus para manter as vossas próprias tradições.

10 Por exemplo: Moisés ordenou-vos da parte de Deus: ‘Honra o teu pai e a tua mãe’,[c] acrescentando que ‘todo aquele que falar contra o pai ou a mãe deverá ser morto.’[d] 11-12 Mas vocês dizem: ‘Mesmo que os teus pais estejam a passar mal, podes dar a Deus o dinheiro que seria para o sustento deles.’ 13 Assim ofendem a Lei divina para defender as vossas tradições criadas por homens. E isto é só um exemplo, porque há muitos mais.”

14 Então chamou de novo a multidão e disse-lhe: “Escutem todos o que vos digo e procurem entender. 15 Não há nada exterior ao homem que ao entrar nele o torne impuro; antes o que sai dele é que o torna impuro.” 16 Quem tem ouvidos para ouvir ouça.

17 Depois de deixar aquele povo, entrou numa casa e os discípulos perguntaram-lhe o que queria dizer com a parábola que acabara de contar. 18 “Então não entendem?”, perguntou-lhes. “Não percebem que nada do que vem do exterior e entra no homem pode torná-lo impuro? 19 Pois não vai para o coração, mas para o estômago e é lançado na latrina.” Com estas palavras, Jesus queria dizer que todos os alimentos ficam puros, independentemente de se lavarem as mãos.

20 E acrescentou: “O que sai do homem é que o torna impuro. 21 Porque do seu íntimo, do seu coração, vêm os maus pensamentos, imoralidades sexuais, roubos, homicídios, 22 adultérios, cobiça, maldades, engano, indecências, inveja, calúnia, orgulho e coisas insensatas. 23 Todas essas coisas más procedem do íntimo da pessoa; são elas que tornam o homem impuro.”

A fé da estrangeira

(Mt 15.21-28)

24 Depois, saiu da Galileia e foi para a região de Tiro e Sídon, mas não conseguiu esconder que estava ali. Como de costume, a notícia da sua chegada depressa se espalhou. 25 Imediatamente foi procurado por uma mulher cuja filha estava possuída por um espírito impuro. Como tinha já ouvido falar em Jesus, aproximou-se dele e prostrou-se aos seus pés, 26 pedindo-lhe muito que livrasse a filha do poder do demónio. Tratava-se de uma siro-fenícia, uma estrangeira, e por isso desprezada pelos judeus. 27 Jesus disse-lhe: “Primeiro tenho que ajudar os da minha família, os judeus. Não está certo tirar o pão aos filhos e lançá-la aos cães.”

28 Ela replicou: “Senhor, até os cachorrinhos comem, debaixo da mesa, das migalhas dos filhos.”

29 “Estás certa! Respondeste tão bem que já curei a tua filhinha!” 30 E quando chegou a casa, encontrou a filha sossegada, na cama; o demónio tinha-a deixado.

A cura do surdo-mudo

(Mt 15.29-31)

31 De Tiro foi para Sídon, voltando em seguida ao mar da Galileia pelo caminho das Dez Cidades. 32 E trouxeram-lhe um surdo que tinha um defeito na fala e todos lhe pediam que pusesse as mãos sobre o homem e o curasse. 33 Então Jesus, afastando-o da multidão, pôs os dedos nos ouvidos do homem e, cuspindo, tocou-lhe na língua com a sua saliva. 34 Levantando os olhos para o céu, suspirou e ordenou: “Effata!”, que significa “Abram-se!” 35 No mesmo instante, o homem começou a ouvir e a falar perfeitamente.

36 Jesus recomendou à multidão que não espalhasse a notícia; mas quanto mais proibia, mais o facto se divulgava. 37 Porque toda a gente sentia enorme espanto, dizendo a cada instante: “Tudo o que faz é maravilhoso! Os surdos ouvem e os mudos falam!”

Then came together unto him the Pharisees, and certain of the scribes, which came from Jerusalem.

And when they saw some of his disciples eat bread with defiled, that is to say, with unwashen, hands, they found fault.

For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands oft, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders.

And when they come from the market, except they wash, they eat not. And many other things there be, which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups, and pots, brasen vessels, and of tables.

Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashen hands?

He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.

Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.

And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.

10 For Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, Whoso curseth father or mother, let him die the death:

11 But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free.

12 And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother;

13 Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.

14 And when he had called all the people unto him, he said unto them, Hearken unto me every one of you, and understand:

15 There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man.

16 If any man have ears to hear, let him hear.

17 And when he was entered into the house from the people, his disciples asked him concerning the parable.

18 And he saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also? Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him;

19 Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats?

20 And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.

21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,

22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:

23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

24 And from thence he arose, and went into the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and entered into an house, and would have no man know it: but he could not be hid.

25 For a certain woman, whose young daughter had an unclean spirit, heard of him, and came and fell at his feet:

26 The woman was a Greek, a Syrophenician by nation; and she besought him that he would cast forth the devil out of her daughter.

27 But Jesus said unto her, Let the children first be filled: for it is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it unto the dogs.

28 And she answered and said unto him, Yes, Lord: yet the dogs under the table eat of the children's crumbs.

29 And he said unto her, For this saying go thy way; the devil is gone out of thy daughter.

30 And when she was come to her house, she found the devil gone out, and her daughter laid upon the bed.

31 And again, departing from the coasts of Tyre and Sidon, he came unto the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the coasts of Decapolis.

32 And they bring unto him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech; and they beseech him to put his hand upon him.

33 And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spit, and touched his tongue;

34 And looking up to heaven, he sighed, and saith unto him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened.

35 And straightway his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spake plain.

36 And he charged them that they should tell no man: but the more he charged them, so much the more a great deal they published it;

37 And were beyond measure astonished, saying, He hath done all things well: he maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak.
