What Makes People “Unclean”?
7 The Pharisees gathered around Jesus. So did some of the teachers of the law. All of them had come from Jerusalem. 2 They saw some of his disciples eating food with “unclean” hands. That means they were not washed. 3 The Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands to make them “clean.” That’s what the elders teach. 4 When they come from the market, they do not eat unless they wash. And they follow many other teachings. For example, they wash cups, pitchers, and kettles in a special way.
5 So the Pharisees and the teachers of the law questioned Jesus. “Why don’t your disciples live by what the elders teach?” they asked. “Why do they eat their food with ‘unclean’ hands?”
6 He replied, “Isaiah was right. He prophesied about you people who pretend to be good. He said,
“ ‘These people honor me by what they say.
But their hearts are far away from me.
7 Their worship doesn’t mean anything to me.
They teach nothing but human rules.’ (Isaiah 29:13)
8 You have let go of God’s commands. And you are holding on to teachings that people have made up.”
9 Jesus continued speaking, “You have a fine way of setting aside God’s commands! You do this so you can follow your own teachings. 10 Moses said, ‘Honor your father and mother.’ (Exodus 20:12; Deuteronomy 5:16) He also said, ‘Anyone who asks for bad things to happen to their father or mother must be put to death.’ (Exodus 21:17; Leviticus 20:9) 11 But you allow people to say that what might have been used to help their parents is Corban. Corban means A Gift Set Apart for God. 12 So you no longer let them do anything for their parents. 13 You make the word of God useless by putting your own teachings in its place. And you do many things like this.”
14 Again Jesus called the crowd to him. He said, “Listen to me, everyone. Understand this. 15-16 Nothing outside of a person can make them ‘unclean’ by going into them. It is what comes out of them that makes them ‘unclean.’ ”
17 Then he left the crowd and entered the house. His disciples asked him about this teaching. 18 “Don’t you understand?” Jesus asked. “Don’t you see? Nothing that enters a person from the outside can make them ‘unclean.’ 19 It doesn’t go into their heart. It goes into their stomach. Then it goes out of the body.” In saying this, Jesus was calling all foods “clean.”
20 He went on to say, “What comes out of a person is what makes them ‘unclean.’ 21 Evil thoughts come from the inside, from a person’s heart. So do sexual sins, stealing and murder. 22 Adultery, greed, hate and cheating come from a person’s heart too. So do desires that are not pure, and wanting what belongs to others. And so do telling lies about others and being proud and being foolish. 23 All these evil things come from inside a person and make them ‘unclean.’ ”
Jesus Honors a Greek Woman’s Faith
24 Jesus went from there to a place near Tyre. He entered a house. He did not want anyone to know where he was. But he could not keep it a secret. 25 Soon a woman heard about him. An evil spirit controlled her little daughter. The woman came to Jesus and fell at his feet. 26 She was a Greek, born in Syrian Phoenicia. She begged Jesus to drive the demon out of her daughter.
27 “First let the children eat all they want,” he told her. “It is not right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.”
28 “Lord,” she replied, “even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.”
29 Then he told her, “That was a good reply. You may go. The demon has left your daughter.”
30 So she went home and found her child lying on the bed. And the demon was gone.
Jesus Heals a Man Who Could Not Hear or Speak
31 Then Jesus left the area of Tyre and went through Sidon. He went down to the Sea of Galilee and into the area known as the Ten Cities. 32 There some people brought a man to Jesus. The man was deaf and could hardly speak. They begged Jesus to place his hand on the man.
33 Jesus took the man to one side, away from the crowd. He put his fingers into the man’s ears. Then he spit and touched the man’s tongue. 34 Jesus looked up to heaven. With a deep sigh, he said to the man, “Ephphatha!” That means “Be opened!” 35 The man’s ears were opened. His tongue was freed up, and he began to speak clearly.
36 Jesus ordered the people not to tell anyone. But the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it. 37 People were really amazed. “He has done everything well,” they said. “He even makes deaf people able to hear. And he makes those who can’t speak able to talk.”

7 Les pharisiens et quelques spécialistes de la loi, venus de Jérusalem, se rassemblèrent auprès de Jésus. 2 Ils virent quelques-uns de ses disciples prendre leur repas avec des mains impures, c'est-à-dire non lavées. 3 – Or, les pharisiens et tous les Juifs ne mangent pas sans s'être lavé soigneusement les mains, conformément à la tradition des anciens. 4 Et quand ils reviennent de la place publique, ils ne mangent pas avant de s'être purifiés. Ils tiennent encore à beaucoup d'autres traditions comme le lavage des coupes, des cruches et des vases de bronze. – 5 Alors les pharisiens et les spécialistes de la loi lui demandèrent: «Pourquoi tes disciples ne suivent-ils pas la tradition des anciens mais prennent-ils au contraire leur repas avec des mains non lavées?»
6 Jésus leur répondit: «Hypocrites, Esaïe a bien prophétisé sur vous, comme il est écrit: Ce peuple m'honore des lèvres, mais son cœur est éloigné de moi. 7 C'est faussement qu'ils m'honorent en donnant des enseignements qui sont des commandements humains.[a] 8 Vous abandonnez le commandement de Dieu et vous gardez la tradition des hommes [car vous lavez les pots et les coupes et vous faites beaucoup d'autres choses semblables].» 9 Il leur dit encore: «Vous rejetez très bien le commandement de Dieu pour garder votre tradition. 10 En effet, Moïse a dit: Honore ton père et ta mère[b] et: Celui qui maudira son père ou sa mère sera puni de mort[c]. 11 Mais d’après vous, si un homme dit à son père ou à sa mère: ‘Ce dont j'aurais pu t'assister est corban, c'est-à-dire une offrande à Dieu’, 12 alors il peut ne plus rien faire pour son père ou pour sa mère. 13 Vous annulez ainsi la parole de Dieu par la tradition que vous avez établie et vous faites beaucoup d'autres choses semblables.»
14 Ensuite, Jésus appela toute la foule et lui dit: «Ecoutez-moi tous et comprenez. 15 Il n'y a rien d'extérieur à l'homme qui puisse le rendre impur en pénétrant en lui, mais c'est ce qui sort de l'homme qui le rend impur. 16 [Si quelqu'un a des oreilles pour entendre, qu'il entende.]»
17 Lorsqu'il fut entré dans la maison, loin de la foule, ses disciples l'interrogèrent sur cette parabole. 18 Il leur dit: «Vous aussi, vous êtes donc sans intelligence? Ne comprenez-vous pas que rien de ce qui, de l’extérieur, entre dans l'homme ne peut le rendre impur? 19 En effet, cela n'entre pas dans son cœur, mais dans son ventre, puis est évacué dans les toilettes.» Il déclarait ainsi que tous les aliments sont purs. 20 Il dit encore: «C'est ce qui sort de l'homme qui le rend impur. 21 En effet, c'est de l’intérieur, c'est du cœur des hommes que sortent les mauvaises pensées, les adultères, l'immoralité sexuelle, les meurtres, 22 les vols, la soif de posséder, les méchancetés, la fraude, la débauche, le regard envieux, la calomnie, l'orgueil, la folie. 23 Toutes ces choses mauvaises sortent du dedans et rendent l'homme impur.»
Jésus et la femme non juive
24 Jésus partit de là et s'en alla dans le territoire de Tyr et de Sidon. Il entra dans une maison, désirant que personne ne le sache, mais il ne put rester caché, 25 car une femme dont la fillette avait un esprit impur entendit parler de lui et vint se jeter à ses pieds. 26 Cette femme était une non-Juive d'origine syro-phénicienne. Elle le pria de chasser le démon hors de sa fille. Jésus lui dit: 27 «Laisse d'abord les enfants se rassasier, car il n'est pas bien de prendre le pain des enfants et de le jeter aux petits chiens.» 28 «Oui, Seigneur, lui répondit-elle, mais les petits chiens, sous la table, mangent les miettes des enfants.» 29 Alors il lui dit: «A cause de cette parole, tu peux t’en aller: le démon est sorti de ta fille.» 30 Et quand elle rentra chez elle, elle trouva l'enfant couchée sur le lit: le démon était sorti.
31 Jésus quitta le territoire de Tyr et revint par Sidon vers le lac de Galilée en traversant la région de la Décapole. 32 On lui amena un sourd qui avait de la difficulté à parler et on le supplia de poser la main sur lui. 33 Il le prit à part loin de la foule, lui mit les doigts dans les oreilles et lui toucha la langue avec sa propre salive. 34 Puis il leva les yeux au ciel, soupira et dit: «Ephphatha» – c'est-à-dire «Ouvre-toi». 35 Aussitôt ses oreilles s'ouvrirent, sa langue se délia et il se mit à parler correctement. 36 Jésus leur recommanda de n'en parler à personne, mais plus il le leur recommandait, plus ils le proclamaient. 37 Remplis d'étonnement, ils disaient: «Il fait tout à merveille; il fait même entendre les sourds et parler les muets.»

That Which Defiles(A)
7 The Pharisees and some of the teachers of the law who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus 2 and saw some of his disciples eating food with hands that were defiled,(B) that is, unwashed. 3 (The Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they give their hands a ceremonial washing, holding to the tradition of the elders.(C) 4 When they come from the marketplace they do not eat unless they wash. And they observe many other traditions, such as the washing of cups, pitchers and kettles.[a])(D)
5 So the Pharisees and teachers of the law asked Jesus, “Why don’t your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders(E) instead of eating their food with defiled hands?”
6 He replied, “Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written:
“‘These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
7 They worship me in vain;
their teachings are merely human rules.’[b](F)
8 You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to human traditions.”(G)
9 And he continued, “You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe[c] your own traditions!(H) 10 For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and mother,’[d](I) and, ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’[e](J) 11 But you say(K) that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is Corban (that is, devoted to God)— 12 then you no longer let them do anything for their father or mother. 13 Thus you nullify the word of God(L) by your tradition(M) that you have handed down. And you do many things like that.”
14 Again Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen to me, everyone, and understand this. 15 Nothing outside a person can defile them by going into them. Rather, it is what comes out of a person that defiles them.” [16] [f]
17 After he had left the crowd and entered the house, his disciples asked him(N) about this parable. 18 “Are you so dull?” he asked. “Don’t you see that nothing that enters a person from the outside can defile them? 19 For it doesn’t go into their heart but into their stomach, and then out of the body.” (In saying this, Jesus declared all foods(O) clean.)(P)
20 He went on: “What comes out of a person is what defiles them. 21 For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come—sexual immorality, theft, murder, 22 adultery, greed,(Q) malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. 23 All these evils come from inside and defile a person.”
Jesus Honors a Syrophoenician Woman’s Faith(R)
24 Jesus left that place and went to the vicinity of Tyre.[g](S) He entered a house and did not want anyone to know it; yet he could not keep his presence secret. 25 In fact, as soon as she heard about him, a woman whose little daughter was possessed by an impure spirit(T) came and fell at his feet. 26 The woman was a Greek, born in Syrian Phoenicia. She begged Jesus to drive the demon out of her daughter.
27 “First let the children eat all they want,” he told her, “for it is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”
28 “Lord,” she replied, “even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.”
29 Then he told her, “For such a reply, you may go; the demon has left your daughter.”
30 She went home and found her child lying on the bed, and the demon gone.
Jesus Heals a Deaf and Mute Man(U)
31 Then Jesus left the vicinity of Tyre(V) and went through Sidon, down to the Sea of Galilee(W) and into the region of the Decapolis.[h](X) 32 There some people brought to him a man who was deaf and could hardly talk,(Y) and they begged Jesus to place his hand on(Z) him.
33 After he took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the man’s ears. Then he spit(AA) and touched the man’s tongue. 34 He looked up to heaven(AB) and with a deep sigh(AC) said to him, “Ephphatha!” (which means “Be opened!”). 35 At this, the man’s ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly.(AD)
36 Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone.(AE) But the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it. 37 People were overwhelmed with amazement. “He has done everything well,” they said. “He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”

2 And when they saw some of his disciples eat bread with defiled, that is to say, with unwashen, hands, they found fault.
3 For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands oft, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders.
4 And when they come from the market, except they wash, they eat not. And many other things there be, which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups, and pots, brasen vessels, and of tables.
5 Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashen hands?

25 For a certain woman, whose young daughter had an unclean spirit, heard of him, and came and fell at his feet:
26 The woman was a Greek, a Syrophenician by nation; and she besought him that he would cast forth the devil out of her daughter.
27 But Jesus said unto her, Let the children first be filled: for it is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it unto the dogs.
28 And she answered and said unto him, Yes, Lord: yet the dogs under the table eat of the children's crumbs.
29 And he said unto her, For this saying go thy way; the devil is gone out of thy daughter.
30 And when she was come to her house, she found the devil gone out, and her daughter laid upon the bed.
31 And again, departing from the coasts of Tyre and Sidon, he came unto the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the coasts of Decapolis.
32 And they bring unto him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech; and they beseech him to put his hand upon him.
33 And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spit, and touched his tongue;
34 And looking up to heaven, he sighed, and saith unto him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened.
35 And straightway his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spake plain.
36 And he charged them that they should tell no man: but the more he charged them, so much the more a great deal they published it;
37 And were beyond measure astonished, saying, He hath done all things well: he maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak.
