⁹ He said to them, “All too well ^(A)you ^[a]reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition.

²¹ I do not set aside the grace of God; for ^(A)if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died ^[a]in vain.”

¹⁶ “As for the word that you have spoken to us in the name of the Lord, ^(A)we will not listen to you! ¹⁷ But we will certainly do ^(B)whatever has gone out of our own mouth, to burn incense to the ^(C)queen of heaven and pour out drink offerings to her, as we have done, we and our fathers, our kings and our princes, in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. For then we had plenty of ^[a]food, were well-off, and saw no trouble.

³ He answered and said to them, “Why do you also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition? ⁴ For God commanded, saying, ^(A)‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ^(B)‘He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.’ ⁵ But you say, ‘Whoever says to his father or mother, ^(C)“Whatever profit you might have received from me is a gift to God”— ⁶ then he need not honor his father ^[a]or mother.’ Thus you have made the ^[b]commandment of God of no effect by your tradition.

¹³ Therefore the Lord said:

¹³ making the word of God of no effect through your tradition which you have handed down. And many such things you do.”

³ For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands ^[a]in a special way, holding the ^(A)tradition of the elders.
