⁶ He answered and said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you ^(A)hypocrites, as it is written:

¹³ Therefore the Lord said:

¹⁶ They profess to ^(A)know God, but ^(B)in works they deny Him, being ^[a]abominable, disobedient, ^(C)and disqualified for every good work.

³¹ So ^(A)they come to you as people do, they ^(B)sit before you as My people, and they ^(C)hear your words, but they do not do them; ^(D)for with their mouth they show much love, but ^(E)their hearts pursue their own gain.

^7 (A)Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy about you, saying:

¹³ “But ^(A)woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut up the kingdom of heaven against men; for you neither go in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in. ^14 [a]Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! ^(B)For you devour widows’ houses, and for a pretense make long prayers. Therefore you will receive greater condemnation.

¹⁵ “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel land and sea to win one proselyte, and when he is won, you make him twice as much a son of ^[b]hell as yourselves.

Faith Without Works Is Dead^(A)

^14 (B)What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? ^15 (C)If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, ¹⁶ and ^(D)one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? ¹⁷ Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

^5 (A)having a form of godliness but ^(B)denying its power. And ^(C)from such people turn away!

^39 (A)Then the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees make the outside of the cup and dish clean, but ^(B)your inward part is full of ^[a]greed and wickedness. ⁴⁰ Foolish ones! Did not ^(C)He who made the outside make the inside also? ^41 (D)But rather give alms of ^[b]such things as you have; then indeed all things are clean to you.

^42 (E)“But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and ^(F)pass by justice and the ^(G)love of God. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone. ^43 (H)Woe to you Pharisees! For you love the ^[c]best seats in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces. ^44 (I)Woe to you, ^[d]scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! ^(J)For you are like graves which are not seen, and the men who walk over them are not aware of them.”
