³ For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands ^[a]in a special way, holding the ^(A)tradition of the elders.

¹⁴ And I advanced in Judaism beyond many of my contemporaries in my own nation, ^(A)being more exceedingly zealous ^(B)for the traditions of my fathers.

¹³ making the word of God of no effect through your tradition which you have handed down. And many such things you do.”

⁸ Beware lest anyone ^[a]cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to ^(A)the tradition of men, according to the ^(B)basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ.

¹⁸ knowing that you were not redeemed with ^[a]corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers,

^21 (A)“Do not touch, do not taste, do not handle,” ²² which all concern things which perish with the using—^(B)according to the commandments and doctrines of men? ^23 (C)These things indeed have an appearance of wisdom in self-imposed religion, false humility, and ^[a]neglect of the body, but are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh.

⁸ For laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men—^[a]the washing of pitchers and cups, and many other such things you do.”

⁹ He said to them, “All too well ^(A)you ^[b]reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition. ¹⁰ For Moses said, ^(B)‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ^(C)‘He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.’

^5 (A)Then the Pharisees and scribes asked Him, “Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashed hands?”

^2 (A)“Why do Your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread.”

³ He answered and said to them, “Why do you also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition? ⁴ For God commanded, saying, ^(B)‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ^(C)‘He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.’ ⁵ But you say, ‘Whoever says to his father or mother, ^(D)“Whatever profit you might have received from me is a gift to God”— ⁶ then he need not honor his father ^[a]or mother.’ Thus you have made the ^[b]commandment of God of no effect by your tradition.
