The Syrophoenician Woman's Faith

²⁴And from there he arose and went away to the region of Tyre and Sidon.^[a] And he entered a house and did not want anyone to know, yet he could not be hidden. ²⁵But immediately a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit heard of him and came and fell down at his feet. ²⁶^(A)Now the woman was a ^(B)Gentile, ^(C)a Syrophoenician by birth. And she begged him to cast the demon out of her daughter. ²⁷And he said to her, “Let the children be ^(D)fed first, for it is not right to take the children's bread and ^(E)throw it to the dogs.” ²⁸But she answered him, “Yes, Lord; yet even the dogs under the table eat the children's ^(F)crumbs.” ²⁹And he said to her, “For this statement you may ^(G)go your way; the demon has left your daughter.” ³⁰And she went home and found the child lying in bed and the demon gone.

The Faith of a Canaanite Woman

²¹^(A)And Jesus went away from there and withdrew to the district of Tyre and Sidon. ²²And behold, ^(B)a Canaanite woman from that region came out and was crying, ^(C)“Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely oppressed by a demon.” ²³But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came and begged him, saying, ^(D)“Send her away, for she is crying out after us.” ²⁴He answered, ^(E)“I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” ²⁵But she came and ^(F)knelt before him, saying, “Lord, help me.” ²⁶And he answered, “It is not right to take the children's bread and ^(G)throw it to the dogs.” ²⁷She said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat ^(H)the crumbs that fall from their masters' table.” ²⁸Then Jesus answered her, “O woman, ^(I)great is your faith! ^(J)Let it be done for you as you desire.” ^(K)And her daughter was ^(L)healed instantly.^[a]
