Jesus Rejected at Nazareth
6 (A)He went away from there and came to (B)his hometown, and his disciples followed him. 2 And (C)on the Sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue, and (D)many who heard him were astonished, saying, “Where did this man get these things? What is the wisdom given to him? How are such mighty works done by his hands? 3 (E)Is not this (F)the carpenter,[a] the son of Mary and (G)brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?” And (H)they took offense at him. 4 And Jesus said to them, (I)“A prophet is not without honor, except in his hometown and among his relatives and in his own household.” 5 And (J)he could do no mighty work there, except that (K)he laid his hands on a few sick people and healed them. 6 And (L)he marveled because of their unbelief.
(M)And he went about among the villages teaching.
Jesus Sends Out the Twelve Apostles
7 (N)And he called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. 8 He charged them to take nothing for their journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in their belts— 9 but to (O)wear sandals and not put on two tunics.[b] 10 And he said to them, “Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you depart from there. 11 And if any place will not receive you and they will not listen to you, when you leave, (P)shake off the dust that is on your feet (Q)as a testimony against them.” 12 (R)So they went out and (S)proclaimed (T)that people should repent. 13 (U)And they cast out many demons and (V)anointed with oil many who were sick and healed them.
The Death of John the Baptist
14 (W)King Herod heard of it, for Jesus'[c] name had become known. Some[d] said, (X)“John the Baptist[e] has been raised from the dead. That is why these miraculous powers are at work in him.” 15 (Y)But others said, “He is Elijah.” And others said, “He is (Z)a prophet, like one of the prophets of old.” 16 But when Herod heard of it, he said, “John, whom I beheaded, has been raised.” 17 (AA)For it was Herod who had sent and seized John and (AB)bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, because he had married her. 18 (AC)For John had been saying to Herod, (AD)“It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife.” 19 And Herodias had a grudge against him and wanted to put him to death. But she could not, 20 for Herod (AE)feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he kept him safe. When he heard him, he was greatly perplexed, and yet he (AF)heard him gladly.
21 But an opportunity came when Herod (AG)on his birthday (AH)gave a banquet for his nobles and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee. 22 For when Herodias's daughter came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests. And the king said to the girl, “Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it to you.” 23 And he vowed to her, “Whatever you ask me, I will give you, (AI)up to half of my kingdom.” 24 And she went out and said to her mother, “For what should I ask?” And she said, “The head of John the Baptist.” 25 And she came in immediately with haste to the king and asked, saying, “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.” 26 And the king was exceedingly sorry, but because of his oaths and his guests he did not want to break his word to her. 27 And immediately the king sent an executioner with orders to bring John's[f] head. He went and beheaded him in the prison 28 and brought his head on a platter and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother. 29 When his (AJ)disciples heard of it, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.
Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand
30 (AK)(AL)The apostles returned to Jesus and told him all that they had done and taught. 31 And he said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.” For many were coming and going, and (AM)they had no leisure even to eat. 32 (AN)And they went away in (AO)the boat to a desolate place by themselves. 33 Now many saw them going and (AP)recognized them, and they ran there on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them. 34 When he went ashore he (AQ)saw a great crowd, and (AR)he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. And he began to teach them many things. 35 And when it grew late, his disciples came to him and said, “This is a desolate place, and the hour is now late. 36 (AS)Send them away to go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.” 37 But he answered them, (AT)“You give them something to eat.” And (AU)they said to him, (AV)“Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii[g] worth of bread and give it to them to eat?” 38 And he said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” And when they had found out, they said, (AW)“Five, and two fish.” 39 Then he commanded them all to sit down in groups on the green grass. 40 So they sat down in groups, by hundreds and by fifties. 41 And taking the five loaves and the two fish, he (AX)looked up to heaven and (AY)said a blessing and broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples to set before the people. And he divided the two fish among them all. 42 And they all ate and were satisfied. 43 And they took up twelve baskets full of broken pieces and of the fish. 44 And those who ate the loaves were five thousand men.
Jesus Walks on the Water
45 (AZ)Immediately he (BA)made his disciples get into (BB)the boat and go before him to the other side, (BC)to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd. 46 And after he had taken leave of them, (BD)he went up on the mountain to pray. 47 And when (BE)evening came, the boat was out on the sea, and he was alone on the land. 48 And he saw that they were making headway painfully, for the wind was against them. And about (BF)the fourth watch of the night[h] he came to them, walking on the sea. (BG)He meant to pass by them, 49 but when they saw him walking on the sea they thought it was a ghost, and cried out, 50 for they all saw him and (BH)were terrified. But immediately he spoke to them and said, (BI)“Take heart; it is I. (BJ)Do not be afraid.” 51 And he got into the boat with them, and the wind ceased. And they were utterly astounded, 52 for (BK)they did not understand about the loaves, but their hearts (BL)were hardened.
Jesus Heals the Sick in Gennesaret
53 (BM)When they had crossed over, they came to land at (BN)Gennesaret and moored to the shore. 54 And when they got out of the boat, the people immediately (BO)recognized him 55 and ran about the whole region and began to bring (BP)the sick people (BQ)on their beds to wherever they heard he was. 56 And wherever he came, in villages, cities, or countryside, (BR)they laid the sick in the marketplaces and implored him that they might touch even (BS)the fringe of his garment. And (BT)as many as touched it were made well.

Jesus förkastas i sin hemstad
6 Han gick därifrån och kom till sin hemstad, och hans lärjungar följde honom. 2 När det blev sabbat undervisade han i synagogan. Många som hörde honom häpnade och frågade: "Var får han detta ifrån, och vad är det för visdom han har fått, så att han kan göra sådana mäktiga gärningar med sina händer? 3 Är det inte snickaren, Marias son och bror till Jakob och Joses och Judas och Simon? Bor inte hans systrar här hos oss?" Och de tog anstöt av honom. 4 Men Jesus sade till dem: "En profet föraktas alltid i sin hemstad, bland sina släktingar och i sin egen familj." 5 Och han kunde inte göra någon kraftgärning där. Bara några få sjuka botade han genom att lägga händerna på dem. 6 Och han förundrade sig över deras otro.
Jesus sänder ut de tolv
Sedan gick Jesus omkring i byarna där i trakten och undervisade. 7 Och han kallade till sig de tolv och sände ut dem två och två och gav dem makt över de orena andarna. 8 Han befallde dem att inte ta med sig något annat på vägen än en stav - inte bröd eller lädersäck eller pengar i bältet. 9 Sandaler fick de ha, men inte två livklädnader.[a] 10 Han sade också till dem: "När ni kommer in i ett hus, så stanna där tills ni går vidare. 11 Och om man på någon plats inte tar emot er eller hör på er, så gå därifrån och skaka av dammet under era fötter till ett vittnesbörd mot dem." 12 De gick ut och predikade att människorna skulle omvända sig, 13 och de drev ut många onda andar och smorde många sjuka med olja och botade dem.
Johannes Döparens död
14 Jesu namn hade nu blivit känt, och kung Herodes[b] fick höra att det var Johannes Döparen som hade uppstått från de döda och att dessa krafter därför verkade i honom. 15 En del sade att han var Elia, och andra att han var en profet, lik någon av profeterna. 16 När Herodes hörde detta sade han: "Johannes, han som jag har halshuggit, har uppstått."
17 Herodes hade nämligen låtit gripa och binda Johannes och sätta honom i fängelse för Herodias skull, hustru till hans bror Filippus. Henne hade Herodes gift sig med, 18 men Johannes hade sagt till honom: "Det är inte tillåtet[c] för dig att ha din brors hustru." 19 Herodias hatade honom och ville döda honom, men hon kunde inte, 20 eftersom Herodes hade respekt för Johannes. Han visste att Johannes var en rättfärdig och helig man och skyddade honom. Och när han hörde honom blev han många gånger villrådig. Ändå lyssnade han gärna på honom.
21 Så kom en dag ett lämpligt tillfälle, när Herodes firade sin födelsedag och ställde till fest för sina stormän och överstar och de främsta männen i Galileen. 22 Då kom Herodias dotter in och dansade, och Herodes och hans bordsgäster blev så förtjusta att kungen sade till den lilla flickan: "Be mig om vad du vill, så skall du få det." 23 Han svor på det och sade till henne: "Allt vad du ber om skall jag ge dig, ända till hälften av mitt rike." 24 Då gick hon ut och frågade sin mor: "Vad skall jag be om?" Hon svarade: "Johannes Döparens huvud." 25 Flickan skyndade in till kungen och bad: "Jag vill att du genast ger mig Johannes Döparens huvud på ett fat." 26 Kungen blev mycket bedrövad över sin ed inför gästerna, men han ville inte avvisa henne. 27 Han skickade därför genast i väg en bödel och befallde honom att bära fram Johannes Döparens huvud. Denne gick då och halshögg Johannes i fängelset. 28 Och han bar fram hans huvud på ett fat och gav det åt den lilla flickan, och hon gav det åt sin mamma. 29 Johannes lärjungar fick höra det, och de kom och tog hans döda kropp och lade den i en grav.
Jesus mättar fem tusen män
30 Apostlarna samlades nu hos Jesus och berättade för honom allt vad de hade gjort och vad de hade lärt folket. 31 Han sade till dem: "Kom med mig till en öde plats där vi kan vara ensamma, och vila er lite." Det var så många som kom och gick att de inte ens fick tid att äta. 32 Så for de i båten till en öde plats för att få vara för sig själva. 33 Men folk såg att de for och många fick veta det, och de skyndade dit till fots från alla städerna och kom före dem. 34 När Jesus steg ur båten, fick han se en stor skara människor. Han förbarmade sig över dem, eftersom de var som får utan herde, och han undervisade dem grundligt.
35 Det var redan sent på dagen, när hans lärjungar kom fram till honom och sade: "Den här platsen ligger ödsligt till, och det är redan sent. 36 Sänd i väg folket, så att de kan gå till gårdarna och byarna här omkring och köpa sig något att äta." 37 Men han svarade: "Ge ni dem att äta." De frågade honom: "Skall vi gå och köpa bröd för två hundra denarer och ge dem att äta?" 38 Han sade till dem: "Hur många bröd har ni? Gå och se efter." De tog reda på det och sade: "Fem bröd och två fiskar." 39 Då befallde han att alla skulle slå sig ner i gröngräset i skilda matlag. 40 De satte sig ner i grupper om hundra eller femtio. 41 Och han tog de fem bröden och de två fiskarna, såg upp mot himlen, tackade Gud och bröt bröden och gav åt sina lärjungar, för att de skulle sätta fram åt folket. Han delade också ut de två fiskarna så att alla fick. 42 Och alla åt och blev mätta. 43 Sedan plockade lärjungarna upp brödstyckena och det som blev över av fiskarna, tolv korgar fulla. 44 Det var fem tusen män som hade ätit.
Jesus går på vattnet
45 Strax därefter befallde Jesus sina lärjungar att stiga i båten och i förväg fara över till Betsaida på andra sidan sjön, medan han sände i väg folket. 46 Och när han hade skilts från dem, gick han upp på berget för att be. 47 På kvällen var båten mitt ute på sjön, och Jesus var ensam kvar på land. 48 Han såg hur medtagna lärjungarna var av rodden, därför att de hade vinden emot sig. Vid fjärde nattväkten kom han till dem, gående på sjön. Han skulle just gå förbi dem, 49 men när de fick se honom gå på sjön, trodde de att det var en vålnad, och de skrek. 50 Ty alla såg honom och blev förskräckta. Men han talade genast till dem: "Var lugna. Det är jag. Var inte rädda." 51 Sedan steg han upp i båten till dem, och vinden lade sig. De var utom sig av häpnad, 52 ty de hade inte förstått detta med bröden. Deras hjärtan var hårda.
Sjuka bärs till Jesus
53 De for över sjön och kom till Gennesaret och lade till där. 54 Så snart de steg ur båten, kände man igen Jesus. 55 Och folk skyndade ut i hela den trakten och förde de sjuka på bårar till den plats där de hörde att han var. 56 Överallt där han gick in, i byar, städer eller gårdar, lade man de sjuka på de öppna platserna och bad att de åtminstone skulle få röra vid hörntofsen på hans mantel. Och alla som rörde vid honom blev friska.

2 And when the sabbath day was come, he began to teach in the synagogue: and many hearing him were astonished, saying, From whence hath this man these things? and what wisdom is this which is given unto him, that even such mighty works are wrought by his hands?
3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him.
4 But Jesus, said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house.

6 And he marvelled because of their unbelief. And he went round about the villages, teaching.

11 And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence, shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.
12 And they went out, and preached that men should repent.

19 Therefore Herodias had a quarrel against him, and would have killed him; but she could not:

21 And when a convenient day was come, that Herod on his birthday made a supper to his lords, high captains, and chief estates of Galilee;
22 And when the daughter of the said Herodias came in, and danced, and pleased Herod and them that sat with him, the king said unto the damsel, Ask of me whatsoever thou wilt, and I will give it thee.
23 And he sware unto her, Whatsoever thou shalt ask of me, I will give it thee, unto the half of my kingdom.
24 And she went forth, and said unto her mother, What shall I ask? And she said, The head of John the Baptist.
25 And she came in straightway with haste unto the king, and asked, saying, I will that thou give me by and by in a charger the head of John the Baptist.
26 And the king was exceeding sorry; yet for his oath's sake, and for their sakes which sat with him, he would not reject her.

28 And brought his head in a charger, and gave it to the damsel: and the damsel gave it to her mother.
29 And when his disciples heard of it, they came and took up his corpse, and laid it in a tomb.
30 And the apostles gathered themselves together unto Jesus, and told him all things, both what they had done, and what they had taught.
31 And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.
32 And they departed into a desert place by ship privately.
33 And the people saw them departing, and many knew him, and ran afoot thither out of all cities, and outwent them, and came together unto him.
34 And Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things.
35 And when the day was now far spent, his disciples came unto him, and said, This is a desert place, and now the time is far passed:
36 Send them away, that they may go into the country round about, and into the villages, and buy themselves bread: for they have nothing to eat.
37 He answered and said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they say unto him, Shall we go and buy two hundred pennyworth of bread, and give them to eat?
38 He saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? go and see. And when they knew, they say, Five, and two fishes.
39 And he commanded them to make all sit down by companies upon the green grass.
40 And they sat down in ranks, by hundreds, and by fifties.
41 And when he had taken the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and brake the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before them; and the two fishes divided he among them all.
42 And they did all eat, and were filled.
43 And they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments, and of the fishes.
44 And they that did eat of the loaves were about five thousand men.
45 And straightway he constrained his disciples to get into the ship, and to go to the other side before unto Bethsaida, while he sent away the people.
46 And when he had sent them away, he departed into a mountain to pray.
47 And when even was come, the ship was in the midst of the sea, and he alone on the land.
48 And he saw them toiling in rowing; for the wind was contrary unto them: and about the fourth watch of the night he cometh unto them, walking upon the sea, and would have passed by them.
49 But when they saw him walking upon the sea, they supposed it had been a spirit, and cried out:
50 For they all saw him, and were troubled. And immediately he talked with them, and saith unto them, Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid.
51 And he went up unto them into the ship; and the wind ceased: and they were sore amazed in themselves beyond measure, and wondered.
52 For they considered not the miracle of the loaves: for their heart was hardened.
53 And when they had passed over, they came into the land of Gennesaret, and drew to the shore.
54 And when they were come out of the ship, straightway they knew him,
55 And ran through that whole region round about, and began to carry about in beds those that were sick, where they heard he was.
56 And whithersoever he entered, into villages, or cities, or country, they laid the sick in the streets, and besought him that they might touch if it were but the border of his garment: and as many as touched him were made whole.
