Jesus Sends Out the Twelve Apostles

^7 (A)And he called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits.

⁹ Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. ¹⁰ For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up!

The Return of the Seventy-Two

^17 (A)The seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, ^(B)even the demons are subject to us in your name!” ¹⁸ And he said to them, ^(C)“I saw Satan ^(D)fall like lightning from heaven. ¹⁹ Behold, I have given you authority ^(E)to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of ^(F)the enemy, and ^(G)nothing shall hurt you. ^20 (H)Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that ^(I)your names are written in heaven.”

10 ^(A)And he called to him his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every affliction. ^2 (B)The names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, ^(C)who is called Peter, and ^(D)Andrew his brother; ^(E)James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; ³ Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and ^(F)Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus;^{[a] 4} Simon the Zealot,^[b] and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.

Jesus Sends Out the Twelve Apostles

^5 (G)These twelve Jesus sent out, instructing them, “Go nowhere among the Gentiles and enter no town of ^(H)the Samaritans,

³ And I will grant authority to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for ^(A)1,260 days, ^(B)clothed in sackcloth.”

³ Go your way; ^(A)behold, I am sending you out as lambs in the midst of wolves. ^4 (B)Carry no moneybag, no knapsack, no sandals, and ^(C)greet no one on the road. ⁵ Whatever house you enter, first say, ^(D)‘Peace be to this house!’ ⁶ And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest upon him. But if not, ^(E)it will return to you. ⁷ And remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they provide, for ^(F)the laborer deserves his wages. Do not go from house to house. ⁸ Whenever you enter a town and they receive you, eat what is set before you. ⁹ Heal the sick in it and say to them, ^(G)‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’ ¹⁰ But whenever you enter a town and they do not receive you, go into its streets and say, ^11 (H)‘Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet we wipe off against you. Nevertheless know this, that ^(I)the kingdom of God has come near.’ ¹² I tell you, ^(J)it will be more bearable on ^(K)that day for Sodom than for that town.

10 After this the Lord appointed ^(A)seventy-two^[a] others and ^(B)sent them on ahead of him, two by two, into every town and place where he himself was about to go.

Jesus Sends Out the Twelve Apostles

9 ^(A)And he called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, ^2 (B)and he sent them out to ^(C)proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal. ^3 (D)And he said to them, “Take nothing for your journey, ^(E)no staff, nor bag, nor bread, nor money; and do not have two tunics.^{[a] 4} And whatever house you enter, stay there, and from there depart. ⁵ And wherever they do not receive you, when you leave that town ^(F)shake off the dust from your feet ^(G)as a testimony ^(H)against them.” ^6 (I)And they departed and went through the villages, preaching the gospel and healing everywhere.

¹³ And when day came, ^(A)he called his disciples ^(B)and ^(C)chose from them twelve, whom he named ^(D)apostles: ¹⁴ Simon, ^(E)whom he named Peter, and ^(F)Andrew his brother, and ^(G)James and John, and Philip, and Bartholomew, ¹⁵ and ^(H)Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called ^(I)the Zealot, ¹⁶ and ^(J)Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.
