A man with many bad spirits
5 Jesus and his disciples came to the other side of the lake. They came to a place where the Gerasene people lived.[a]
2-4 Jesus got out of the boat. Immediately, a man with a bad spirit in him came to him. This man lived outside, among some graves. He was very strong and nobody could hold him. People often put chains around his ankles to hold him. They wanted to keep him in a safe place. But he broke the chains that held him. 5 The man often walked in the place where the dead people were and on the hills. Every day and every night, he screamed and he used stones to cut himself.
6 He saw Jesus a long way away and he ran to meet him. He went down on his knees in front of Jesus. 7 He screamed loudly, ‘Jesus, you are the Son of the Most High God! What are you doing here? Please, promise God that you will not hurt me.’ 8 He said that because Jesus had already said to the bad spirit, ‘Come out of this man.’
9 Then Jesus asked the man, ‘What is your name?’
The man replied, ‘My name is Army because there are so many bad spirits in me.’
10 He said to Jesus many times, ‘Please do not send these bad spirits away from this place.’
11 A large group of pigs was eating on the hill. 12 The bad spirits said, ‘Jesus, send us to the pigs. Let us go into them.’ 13 Jesus let them do this. So the bad spirits came out of the man and they went into the pigs. There were about 2,000 pigs. They rushed together down the hill into the lake. All the pigs died there in the water.
14 The men who were taking care of these pigs ran away. They told the people in the town and in the villages what had happened. Then those people came to see the place for themselves. 15 They came to Jesus. They saw the man that the army of bad spirits had ruled. He was now sitting there quietly. He was wearing clothes and his mind was well again. When the people saw this, they were afraid. 16 The people who had seen this told other people what had happened to the man. They also explained what happened to the pigs. 17 Then the people who lived there said to Jesus, ‘Please go away. Leave this place.’
18 Jesus got back into the boat. The man that the bad spirits had ruled spoke to him. He told Jesus that he wanted to go with him. 19 But Jesus did not let him do this. Jesus said to him, ‘Go to your home and to your friends. Tell them what the Lord has done for you. Tell them how he has been kind to you.’ 20 So the man went away. He began to speak to many people in the region called ‘The ten cities’. He told them about the great things that Jesus had done for him. All the people were very surprised.
Jesus makes a dead girl live
21 Jesus returned to the other side of the lake in the boat. While he was by the lake, a large crowd came to him. 22 A man called Jairus came to Jesus. He was a leader at the Jewish meeting place. When he saw Jesus, he went down on his knees in front of him. 23 He said, ‘My little daughter is very ill and she will die very soon. Please come to my house and put your hands on her. Then she will be well and she will live.’ 24 So Jesus went with Jairus.
A large crowd followed Jesus. The people were pushing against him. 25 There was a sick woman who had lost blood for 12 years. 26 She had paid many doctors to help her to become well. But they could not do anything. Now she had spent all her money. She had not become well. Instead, she was now worse. 27 People had told her about Jesus. So she came in the crowd behind him and she touched his coat. 28 She said, ‘Even if I can only touch his clothes, I will become well again.’ 29 As soon as she touched Jesus' coat, the blood stopped. She felt in her body that her illness was better. She knew that she was well again.
30 Jesus knew immediately that something powerful had gone out from him. So he turned around in the crowd and he asked, ‘Who touched my clothes?’
31 His disciples replied, ‘You can see that the crowd is pushing against you. So you cannot ask who touched you!’
32 But Jesus looked around him. He wanted to see who had touched him. 33 The woman knew what had happened to her. She felt very afraid. But she came to Jesus, and she went down on her knees in front of him. Then she told him everything that had happened to her. 34 Jesus said to her, ‘Young woman, you are now well again because you believed in me. Have peace in your mind. Go now and have no more pain.’
35 While Jesus was still speaking, some men arrived from the house of Jairus. He was the leader at the Jews' meeting place. The men said to Jairus, ‘Your daughter is dead. Do not ask any longer for the teacher to come.’
36 Jesus heard what the men said to Jairus. But Jesus said to him, ‘Do not be afraid. Instead, believe.’
37 Jesus took only Peter, James and James's brother, John, with him. He would not let anyone else go with him. 38 Then they came to Jairus's house. Jesus saw that there were many people there. They were crying and they were making a loud noise. 39 Jesus went into the house and he said to the people, ‘You should not be weeping and making a noise. The child is not dead. She is asleep.’ 40 The people laughed at Jesus when he said that.
Then Jesus sent them all out of the house. He went into the place where the child was lying. The child's father and mother went with him. He also took Peter, James and John with him. 41 Then Jesus held the girl's hand. He said to her, ‘Talitha koum.’ This means, ‘Little girl, I say to you, stand up!’[b] 42 The girl stood up immediately and she walked about. She was 12 years old. The people there were very surprised. 43 Jesus said to them, ‘You must not tell anyone what has happened here. Now give the girl something to eat.’

2 Und als er aus dem Schiff trat, lief ihm alsbald entgegen aus den Gräbern ein besessener Mensch mit einem unsaubern Geist,
3 der seine Wohnung in den Gräbern hatte; und niemand konnte ihn binden, auch nicht mit Ketten.
4 Denn er war oft mit Fesseln und Ketten gebunden gewesen, und hatte die Ketten abgerissen und die Fesseln zerrieben; und niemand konnte ihn zähmen.
5 Und er war allezeit, Tag und Nacht, auf den Bergen und in den Gräbern, schrie und schlug sich mit Steinen.
6 Da er aber Jesum sah von ferne, lief er zu und fiel vor ihm nieder, schrie laut und sprach:
7 Was habe ich mit dir zu tun, o Jesu, du Sohn Gottes, des Allerhöchsten? Ich beschwöre dich bei Gott, daß du mich nicht quälest!
8 Denn er sprach zu ihm: Fahre aus, du unsauberer Geist, von dem Menschen!
9 Und er fragte ihn: Wie heißt du? Und er antwortete und sprach: Legion heiße ich; denn wir sind unser viele.
10 Und er bat ihn sehr, daß er sie nicht aus der Gegend triebe.
11 Und es war daselbst an den Bergen eine große Herde Säue auf der Weide.
12 Und die Teufel baten ihn alle und sprachen: Laß uns in die Säue fahren!
13 Und alsbald erlaubte es ihnen Jesus. Da fuhren die unsauberen Geister aus und fuhren in die Säue; und die Herde stürzte sich von dem Abhang ins Meer (ihrer waren aber bei zweitausend) und ersoffen im Meer.
14 Und die Sauhirten flohen und verkündigten das in der Stadt und auf dem Lande. Und sie gingen hinaus, zu sehen, was da geschehen war,
15 und kamen zu Jesu und sahen den, der von den Teufeln besessen war, daß er saß und war bekleidet und vernünftig, und fürchteten sich.
16 Und die es gesehen hatten, sagten ihnen, was dem Besessenen widerfahren war, und von den Säuen.
17 Und sie fingen an und baten ihn, daß er aus ihrer Gegend zöge.
18 Und da er in das Schiff trat, bat ihn der Besessene, daß er möchte bei ihm sein.
19 Aber Jesus ließ es nicht zu, sondern sprach zu ihm: Gehe hin in dein Haus und zu den Deinen und verkündige ihnen, wie große Wohltat dir der HERR getan und sich deiner erbarmt hat.
20 Und er ging hin und fing an, auszurufen in den zehn Städten, wie große Wohltat ihm Jesus getan hatte; und jedermann verwunderte sich.
21 Und da Jesus wieder herüberfuhr im Schiff, versammelte sich viel Volks zu ihm, und er war an dem Meer.
22 Und siehe, da kam der Obersten einer von der Schule, mit Namen Jairus; und da er ihn sah, fiel er ihm zu Füßen
23 und bat ihn sehr und sprach: Meine Tochter ist in den letzten Zügen; Du wollest kommen und deine Hand auf sie legen, daß sie gesund werde und lebe.
24 Und er ging hin mit ihm; und es folgte ihm viel Volks nach, und sie drängten ihn.
25 Und da war ein Weib, das hatte den Blutgang zwölf Jahre gehabt
26 und viel erlitten von vielen Ärzten und hatte all ihr Gut darob verzehrt, und half ihr nichts, sondern vielmehr ward es ärger mit ihr.
27 Da die von Jesu hörte, kam sie im Volk von hintenzu und rührte sein Kleid an.
28 Denn sie sprach: Wenn ich nur sein Kleid möchte anrühren, so würde ich gesund.
29 Und alsbald vertrocknete der Brunnen ihres Bluts; und sie fühlte es am Leibe, daß sie von ihrer Plage war gesund geworden.
30 Und Jesus fühlte alsbald an sich selbst die Kraft, die von ihm ausgegangen war, und wandte sich um zum Volk und sprach: Wer hat meine Kleider angerührt?
31 Und die Jünger sprachen zu ihm: Du siehst, daß dich das Volk drängt, und sprichst: Wer hat mich angerührt?
32 Und er sah sich um nach der, die das getan hatte.
33 Das Weib aber fürchtete sich und zitterte (denn sie wußte, was an ihr geschehen war), kam und fiel vor ihm nieder und sagte die ganze Wahrheit.
34 Er sprach aber zu ihr; Meine Tochter, Dein Glaube hat dich gesund gemacht; gehe hin mit Frieden und sei gesund von deiner Plage!
35 Da er noch also redete, kamen etliche vom Gesinde des Obersten der Schule und sprachen: Deine Tochter ist gestorben; was bemühst du weiter den Meister?
36 Jesus aber hörte alsbald die Rede, die da gesagt ward, und sprach zu dem Obersten der Schule: Fürchte dich nicht, glaube nur!
37 Und ließ niemand ihm nachfolgen denn Petrus und Jakobus und Johannes, den Bruder des Jakobus.
38 Und er kam in das Haus des Obersten der Schule und sah das Getümmel und die da weinten und heulten.
39 Und er ging hinein und sprach zu ihnen: Was tummelt und weinet ihr? Das Kind ist nicht gestorben, sondern es schläft. Und sie verlachten ihn.
40 Und er trieb sie alle aus und nahm mit sich den Vater des Kindes und die Mutter die bei ihm waren, und ging hinein, da das Kind lag,
41 und ergriff das Kind bei der Hand und sprach zu ihr: Talitha kumi! das ist verdolmetscht: Mägdlein, ich sage dir stehe auf!
42 Und alsbald stand das Mägdlein auf und wandelte; es war aber zwölf Jahre alt. Und sie entsetzten sich über die Maßen.
43 Und er verbot ihnen hart, daß es niemand wissen sollte, und sagte, sie sollten ihr zu essen geben.

Jesus Restores a Demon-Possessed Man(A)(B)
5 They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes.[a] 2 When Jesus got out of the boat,(C) a man with an impure spirit(D) came from the tombs to meet him. 3 This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain. 4 For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him. 5 Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones.
6 When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of him. 7 He shouted at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me,(E) Jesus, Son of the Most High God?(F) In God’s name don’t torture me!” 8 For Jesus had said to him, “Come out of this man, you impure spirit!”
9 Then Jesus asked him, “What is your name?”
“My name is Legion,”(G) he replied, “for we are many.” 10 And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area.
11 A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside. 12 The demons begged Jesus, “Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into them.” 13 He gave them permission, and the impure spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.
14 Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened. 15 When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion(H) of demons,(I) sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. 16 Those who had seen it told the people what had happened to the demon-possessed man—and told about the pigs as well. 17 Then the people began to plead with Jesus to leave their region.
18 As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him. 19 Jesus did not let him, but said, “Go home to your own people and tell them(J) how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” 20 So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis[b](K) how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed.
Jesus Raises a Dead Girl and Heals a Sick Woman(L)
21 When Jesus had again crossed over by boat to the other side of the lake,(M) a large crowd gathered around him while he was by the lake.(N) 22 Then one of the synagogue leaders,(O) named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet. 23 He pleaded earnestly with him, “My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on(P) her so that she will be healed and live.” 24 So Jesus went with him.
A large crowd followed and pressed around him. 25 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding(Q) for twelve years. 26 She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse. 27 When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, 28 because she thought, “If I just touch his clothes,(R) I will be healed.” 29 Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.(S)
30 At once Jesus realized that power(T) had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my clothes?”
31 “You see the people crowding against you,” his disciples answered, “and yet you can ask, ‘Who touched me?’ ”
32 But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it. 33 Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth. 34 He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you.(U) Go in peace(V) and be freed from your suffering.”
35 While Jesus was still speaking, some people came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader.(W) “Your daughter is dead,” they said. “Why bother the teacher anymore?”
36 Overhearing[c] what they said, Jesus told him, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.”
37 He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James and John the brother of James.(X) 38 When they came to the home of the synagogue leader,(Y) Jesus saw a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly. 39 He went in and said to them, “Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep.”(Z) 40 But they laughed at him.
After he put them all out, he took the child’s father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was. 41 He took her by the hand(AA) and said to her, “Talitha koum!” (which means “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”).(AB) 42 Immediately the girl stood up and began to walk around (she was twelve years old). At this they were completely astonished. 43 He gave strict orders not to let anyone know about this,(AC) and told them to give her something to eat.
