A man with many bad spirits
5 Jesus and his disciples came to the other side of the lake. They came to a place where the Gerasene people lived.[a]
2-4 Jesus got out of the boat. Immediately, a man with a bad spirit in him came to him. This man lived outside, among some graves. He was very strong and nobody could hold him. People often put chains around his ankles to hold him. They wanted to keep him in a safe place. But he broke the chains that held him. 5 The man often walked in the place where the dead people were and on the hills. Every day and every night, he screamed and he used stones to cut himself.
6 He saw Jesus a long way away and he ran to meet him. He went down on his knees in front of Jesus. 7 He screamed loudly, ‘Jesus, you are the Son of the Most High God! What are you doing here? Please, promise God that you will not hurt me.’ 8 He said that because Jesus had already said to the bad spirit, ‘Come out of this man.’
9 Then Jesus asked the man, ‘What is your name?’
The man replied, ‘My name is Army because there are so many bad spirits in me.’
10 He said to Jesus many times, ‘Please do not send these bad spirits away from this place.’
11 A large group of pigs was eating on the hill. 12 The bad spirits said, ‘Jesus, send us to the pigs. Let us go into them.’ 13 Jesus let them do this. So the bad spirits came out of the man and they went into the pigs. There were about 2,000 pigs. They rushed together down the hill into the lake. All the pigs died there in the water.
14 The men who were taking care of these pigs ran away. They told the people in the town and in the villages what had happened. Then those people came to see the place for themselves. 15 They came to Jesus. They saw the man that the army of bad spirits had ruled. He was now sitting there quietly. He was wearing clothes and his mind was well again. When the people saw this, they were afraid. 16 The people who had seen this told other people what had happened to the man. They also explained what happened to the pigs. 17 Then the people who lived there said to Jesus, ‘Please go away. Leave this place.’
18 Jesus got back into the boat. The man that the bad spirits had ruled spoke to him. He told Jesus that he wanted to go with him. 19 But Jesus did not let him do this. Jesus said to him, ‘Go to your home and to your friends. Tell them what the Lord has done for you. Tell them how he has been kind to you.’ 20 So the man went away. He began to speak to many people in the region called ‘The ten cities’. He told them about the great things that Jesus had done for him. All the people were very surprised.
Jesus makes a dead girl live
21 Jesus returned to the other side of the lake in the boat. While he was by the lake, a large crowd came to him. 22 A man called Jairus came to Jesus. He was a leader at the Jewish meeting place. When he saw Jesus, he went down on his knees in front of him. 23 He said, ‘My little daughter is very ill and she will die very soon. Please come to my house and put your hands on her. Then she will be well and she will live.’ 24 So Jesus went with Jairus.
A large crowd followed Jesus. The people were pushing against him. 25 There was a sick woman who had lost blood for 12 years. 26 She had paid many doctors to help her to become well. But they could not do anything. Now she had spent all her money. She had not become well. Instead, she was now worse. 27 People had told her about Jesus. So she came in the crowd behind him and she touched his coat. 28 She said, ‘Even if I can only touch his clothes, I will become well again.’ 29 As soon as she touched Jesus' coat, the blood stopped. She felt in her body that her illness was better. She knew that she was well again.
30 Jesus knew immediately that something powerful had gone out from him. So he turned around in the crowd and he asked, ‘Who touched my clothes?’
31 His disciples replied, ‘You can see that the crowd is pushing against you. So you cannot ask who touched you!’
32 But Jesus looked around him. He wanted to see who had touched him. 33 The woman knew what had happened to her. She felt very afraid. But she came to Jesus, and she went down on her knees in front of him. Then she told him everything that had happened to her. 34 Jesus said to her, ‘Young woman, you are now well again because you believed in me. Have peace in your mind. Go now and have no more pain.’
35 While Jesus was still speaking, some men arrived from the house of Jairus. He was the leader at the Jews' meeting place. The men said to Jairus, ‘Your daughter is dead. Do not ask any longer for the teacher to come.’
36 Jesus heard what the men said to Jairus. But Jesus said to him, ‘Do not be afraid. Instead, believe.’
37 Jesus took only Peter, James and James's brother, John, with him. He would not let anyone else go with him. 38 Then they came to Jairus's house. Jesus saw that there were many people there. They were crying and they were making a loud noise. 39 Jesus went into the house and he said to the people, ‘You should not be weeping and making a noise. The child is not dead. She is asleep.’ 40 The people laughed at Jesus when he said that.
Then Jesus sent them all out of the house. He went into the place where the child was lying. The child's father and mother went with him. He also took Peter, James and John with him. 41 Then Jesus held the girl's hand. He said to her, ‘Talitha koum.’ This means, ‘Little girl, I say to you, stand up!’[b] 42 The girl stood up immediately and she walked about. She was 12 years old. The people there were very surprised. 43 Jesus said to them, ‘You must not tell anyone what has happened here. Now give the girl something to eat.’

5 And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes.
2 And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit,
3 Who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains:
4 Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him.
5 And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones.
6 But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him,
7 And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not.
8 For he said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit.
9 And he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many.
10 And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the country.
11 Now there was there nigh unto the mountains a great herd of swine feeding.
12 And all the devils besought him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them.
13 And forthwith Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits went out, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea, (they were about two thousand;) and were choked in the sea.
14 And they that fed the swine fled, and told it in the city, and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that was done.
15 And they come to Jesus, and see him that was possessed with the devil, and had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.
16 And they that saw it told them how it befell to him that was possessed with the devil, and also concerning the swine.
17 And they began to pray him to depart out of their coasts.
18 And when he was come into the ship, he that had been possessed with the devil prayed him that he might be with him.
19 Howbeit Jesus suffered him not, but saith unto him, Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee.
20 And he departed, and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him: and all men did marvel.
21 And when Jesus was passed over again by ship unto the other side, much people gathered unto him: and he was nigh unto the sea.
22 And, behold, there cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name; and when he saw him, he fell at his feet,
23 And besought him greatly, saying, My little daughter lieth at the point of death: I pray thee, come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be healed; and she shall live.
24 And Jesus went with him; and much people followed him, and thronged him.
25 And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood twelve years,
26 And had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse,
27 When she had heard of Jesus, came in the press behind, and touched his garment.
28 For she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole.
29 And straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague.
30 And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him, turned him about in the press, and said, Who touched my clothes?
31 And his disciples said unto him, Thou seest the multitude thronging thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me?
32 And he looked round about to see her that had done this thing.
33 But the woman fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth.
34 And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.
35 While he yet spake, there came from the ruler of the synagogue's house certain which said, Thy daughter is dead: why troublest thou the Master any further?
36 As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid, only believe.
37 And he suffered no man to follow him, save Peter, and James, and John the brother of James.
38 And he cometh to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and seeth the tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly.
39 And when he was come in, he saith unto them, Why make ye this ado, and weep? the damsel is not dead, but sleepeth.
40 And they laughed him to scorn. But when he had put them all out, he taketh the father and the mother of the damsel, and them that were with him, and entereth in where the damsel was lying.
41 And he took the damsel by the hand, and said unto her, Talitha cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee, arise.
42 And straightway the damsel arose, and walked; for she was of the age of twelve years. And they were astonished with a great astonishment.
43 And he charged them straitly that no man should know it; and commanded that something should be given her to eat.

5 Они переправились на другую сторону озера в Гадаринскую землю. 2 Как только Иса вышел из лодки, навстречу Ему из могильных пещер выскочил человек, одержимый нечистым духом.
3 Человек этот жил в могильных пещерах, и никто не мог связать его даже цепями: 4 его уже много раз сковывали по рукам и ногам, но он всегда разрывал цепи и разбивал кандалы на ногах. Никто не мог усмирить его. 5 Днём и ночью он бродил среди могил и по горам и с диким криком бил себя камнями. 6 Увидев Ису издалека, он подбежал к Нему, поклонился 7 и закричал во весь голос:
– Что Ты от меня хочешь, Иса, Сын Бога Высочайшего (Царственный Спаситель)? Заклинаю Тебя Всевышним, не мучь меня, – 8 потому что Иса говорил ему: «Выйди, нечистый дух, из этого человека».
9 Иса спросил:
– Как тебя зовут?
– Меня зовут Полчище[a], – ответил он, – потому что нас много.
10 И он настойчиво умолял Ису не выгонять их из тех мест. 11 А там у горы в это время паслось большое стадо свиней, 12 и нечистые духи попросили Ису:
– Позволь нам войти в этих свиней.
13 Иса позволил, и нечистые духи, выйдя из человека, вошли в свиней. Всё стадо, около двух тысяч голов, тут же ринулось с обрыва в озеро и утонуло в нём. 14 А свинопасы побежали и рассказали о случившемся в городе и в окрестностях. Сбежался народ посмотреть, что произошло. 15 Подойдя к Исе, они увидели, что бывший одержимый, в котором было полчище демонов, сидит одетый и в здравом уме, и их охватил страх. 16 Очевидцы же рассказали им, как всё произошло с одержимым и со свиньями. 17 Тогда местные жители стали просить Ису покинуть их края. 18 Когда Иса садился в лодку, то человек, который был одержим демонами, стал просить, чтобы Он взял его с Собой, 19 но Иса отказал ему.
– Ступай домой к своим родным, – сказал Он, – и расскажи им, что сделал для тебя Вечный, и какую милость Он к тебе проявил.
20 Тот пошёл и стал рассказывать в области Десяти городов о том, что сделал для него Иса. Его рассказ приводил всех в изумление.

21 Когда Иса переправился в лодке обратно на другую сторону озера, вокруг Него на берегу собралась большая толпа. 22 Тут пришёл Иаир, один из начальников молитвенного дома иудеев. Он, увидев Ису, пал к Его ногам 23 и стал умолять:
– Моя маленькая дочь умирает, приди и возложи на неё руки, чтобы она исцелилась и осталась жива.
24 Иса пошёл с ним, а за Исой следовала большая толпа и теснила Его со всех сторон. 25 Там была женщина, двенадцать лет страдавшая кровотечением. 26 Она натерпелась от многих врачей, истратила на лечение всё, что у неё было, но не получила никакой помощи, напротив, ей становилось всё хуже. 27 Она слышала об Исе, и поэтому она подошла сзади к Нему сквозь толпу и прикоснулась к Его одежде.
28 «Если я хоть к одежде Его прикоснусь, то исцелюсь», – думала она. 29 Её кровотечение сразу же остановилось, и она почувствовала, что исцелена. 30 А Иса мгновенно почувствовал, что из Него вышла сила.
Он обернулся в толпе и спросил:
– Кто прикоснулся к Моей одежде?
31 Ученики ответили Ему:
– Ты же видишь, что толпа теснит Тебя со всех сторон. Что же Ты спрашиваешь, кто к Тебе прикоснулся?
32 Но Иса обводил толпу взглядом, чтобы увидеть ту, которая это сделала. 33 Женщина, дрожа от страха и зная, что с ней произошло, подошла, пала к Его ногам и рассказала всю правду. 34 Тогда Иса сказал ей:
– Дочь Моя, твоя вера исцелила тебя. Иди с миром и будь здорова от своего недуга.
35 Пока Иса ещё говорил, пришли люди из дома Иаира, начальника молитвенного дома, и передали:
– Твоя дочь умерла, зачем ещё беспокоить Учителя?
36 Но Иса, не обращая внимания на их слова, сказал начальнику молитвенного дома:
– Не бойся, только верь!
37 Он не позволил идти с Ним никому, кроме Петира, Якуба и Иохана, брата Якуба. 38 Когда они вошли в дом начальника, Он увидел смятение. Люди плакали и причитали. 39 Иса вошёл в дом и спросил их:
– Почему вы так скорбите и плачете? Девочка не умерла, она спит.
40 Над Ним начали смеяться. Но Иса велел всем выйти, а Сам с отцом и матерью девочки и Своими спутниками вошёл в комнату, где она лежала. 41 Взяв её за руку, Иса сказал:
– Талета куми!
Это значит: «Девочка, говорю тебе: встань!»
42 Девочка сразу встала и начала ходить (ей было лет двенадцать). Все были сильно удивлены. 43 Но Иса строго наказал им, чтобы никто не узнал о случившемся, а девочку велел покормить.
