³⁹ When he had entered, he said to them, “Why do you make a commotion and weep? The child is not dead but sleeping.”

¹⁰ But Paul went down and bending over him took him in his arms and said, “Do not be alarmed, for his life is in him.”^(A)

¹⁰ who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep we may live with him.^(A)

The Coming of the Lord

¹³ But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about those who have died,^[a] so that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. ¹⁴ For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have died.^[b](A)

³⁰ For this reason many of you are weak and ill, and some have died.^[a]

¹¹ After saying this, he told them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going there to awaken him.” ¹² The disciples said to him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will be all right.”^{[a] 13} Jesus, however, had been speaking about his death, but they thought that he was referring merely to sleep.

² Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth^[a] shall awake, some to everlasting life and some to shame and everlasting contempt.^(A)
