And He began again to teach by the seaside. And there gathered to Him a great multitude. So that He entered into a ship and sat in the sea. And all the people were by the seaside, on the land.

And He taught them many things in parables, and said to them in His doctrine,

“Hear now. Behold, there went out a sower to sow.

“And it happened that, as he sowed, some fell by the wayside. And the birds of the heaven came and devoured it up.

“And some fell on stony ground, where it had not much earth. And it quickly sprang up, because it had not depth of earth.

“But as soon as the Sun was up, it was burnt up. And because it had no root, it withered away.

“And some fell among the thorns. And the thorns grew up and choked it, so that it gave no fruit.

“Some again fell in good ground, and did yield fruit, that sprang up and grew. And it brought forth - some thirtyfold, some sixtyfold, and some a hundredfold.”

Then He said to them, “Whoever has ears to hear, let him hear.”

10 And when He was alone, those who were around Him, with the twelve, asked Him of the parable.

11 And He said to them, “To you it is given to know the mystery of the Kingdom of God. But to those who are outside, all things are done in parables,

12 “So that those seeing may see, and not discern. And those hearing may hear, and not understand; lest at any time they should turn, and their sins should be forgiven them.”

13 Again He said to them, “Do you not perceive this parable? How then shall you understand all other parables?

14 “The sower sows the Word.

15 “And these are those who receive the seed by the wayside, in whom the Word is sown. But when they have heard it, Satan comes immediately and takes away the Word that was sown in their hearts.

16 “And likewise, those who receive the seed in stony ground are those who (when they have heard the Word) immediately receive it with gladness.

17 “Yet they have no root in themselves and endure but a time. For when trouble and persecution arise for the word, they fall away immediately.

18 “Also those who receive the seed among the thorns, are those who hear the Word,

19 “but the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches and the lusts of other things enter in and choke the Word. And it is unfruitful.

20 “But those who have received seed in good ground, are those who hear the Word and receive it and bring forth fruit - one corn thirty, another sixty, and some a hundred.”

21 Also He said to them, “Does the candle come in to be put under a bushel, or under the bed, and not to be put in a candlestick?

22 “For there is nothing hidden that shall not be opened. Nor is there a secret that shall not come to light.

23 “If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.”

24 And He said to them, “Pay attention to what you hear. With whatever measure you use, it shall be measured to you. And to you who hear shall more be given.

25 “For to him who has shall it be given. And from him that has not shall be taken away even that he has.”

26 Also He said, “So is the Kingdom of God: as if a man should cast seed in the ground

27 “and should sleep and rise up night and day. And the seed should spring and grow up, he not knowing how.

28 “For the Earth brings forth fruit from itself; first the blade, then the ears; after that, full corn in the ears.

29 “And as soon as the fruit shows itself, he puts in the sickle to it. Because the harvest has come.”

30 He said moreover, “To what shall we liken the Kingdom of God? Or, with what shall we compare it?

31 “It is like a grain of mustard seed; which, when it is sown in the earth, is the least of all seeds on the Earth.

32 “But after it is sown, it grows up and is greatest of all herbs and bears great branches. So that the birds of the heaven may build under the shadow of it.”

33 And with many such parables He preached the Word to them, as they were able to hear it.

34 And He spoke nothing to them without parables. But He expounded all things to His disciples separately.

35 Now the same day, when evening had come, He said to them, “Let us pass over to the other side.”

36 And they left the multitude and entered into a ship. And there were also other little ships with Him.

37 And a great storm of wind arose. And the waves dashed into the ship, so that it was now full.

38 And He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, “Master, don’t you care that we perish!?”

39 And He arose and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace, and be still!” So, the wind ceased. And there was a great calm.

40 Then He said to them, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?”

41 And they feared exceedingly and said one to another, “Who is this, that both the wind and the sea obey Him?”

The Parable of the Sower

Again (A)he began to teach beside the sea. And a very large crowd gathered about him, (B)so that he got into a boat and sat in it on the sea, and the whole crowd was beside the sea on the land. And (C)he was teaching them many things in parables, and in his teaching he said to them: “Listen! Behold, (D)a sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seed fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured it. Other seed fell on rocky ground, where it did not have much soil, and immediately it sprang up, since it had no depth of soil. And (E)when the sun rose, it was scorched, and since it had no root, (F)it withered away. Other seed fell among (G)thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no grain. And other seeds fell into good soil and produced grain, growing up and increasing and yielding thirtyfold and sixtyfold and (H)a hundredfold.” And he said, (I)“He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

The Purpose of the Parables

10 And (J)when he was alone, those around him with the twelve asked him about the parables. 11 And he said to them, (K)“To you has been given (L)the secret of the kingdom of God, but for (M)those outside everything is in parables, 12 (N)so that

“‘they (O)may indeed see but not perceive,
    and may indeed hear but not understand,
lest they (P)should turn and be forgiven.’”

13 (Q)And he said to them, “Do you not understand this parable? How then will you understand all the parables? 14 (R)The sower sows (S)the word. 15 And these are the ones along the path, where the word is sown: when they hear, Satan immediately comes and takes away the word that is sown in them. 16 And these are the ones sown on rocky ground: the ones who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it (T)with joy. 17 And they have no root in themselves, but (U)endure for a while; then, when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately (V)they fall away.[a] 18 And others are the ones sown among thorns. They are those who hear the word, 19 but (W)the cares of (X)the world and (Y)the deceitfulness of riches and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it proves unfruitful. 20 But those that were sown on the good soil are the ones who hear the word and accept it and (Z)bear fruit, (AA)thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold.”

A Lamp Under a Basket

21 (AB)And he said to them, (AC)“Is a lamp brought in to be put under a basket, or under a bed, and not on a stand? 22 (AD)For nothing is hidden except to be made manifest; nor is anything secret except to come to light. 23 (AE)If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.” 24 And he said to them, “Pay attention to what you hear: (AF)with the measure you use, it will be measured to you, and still more will be added to you. 25 (AG)For to the one who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.”

The Parable of the Seed Growing

26 And he said, (AH)“The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground. 27 He sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows; (AI)he knows not how. 28 The earth produces by itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. 29 But when the grain is ripe, at once (AJ)he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.”

The Parable of the Mustard Seed

30 (AK)And he said, “With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable shall we use for it? 31 It is like (AL)a grain of mustard seed, which, when sown on the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth, 32 yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes larger than all the garden plants and puts out large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.”

33 (AM)With many such parables he spoke (AN)the word to them, (AO)as they were able to hear it. 34 He did not speak to them (AP)without a parable, but (AQ)privately to his own disciples he (AR)explained everything.

Jesus Calms a Storm

35 (AS)On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” 36 And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him. 37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves (AT)were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. 38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” 39 And he awoke and (AU)rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and (AV)there was a great calm. 40 He said to them, “Why are you (AW)so afraid? Have you still no faith?” 41 And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, (AX)“Who then is this, that even (AY)the wind and the sea obey him?”

Ang Sambingay bahin sa Tigsabwag

Nagtudlo pag-usab si Jesus sa daplin sa linaw. Daghan kaayong mga tawo ang nagtigom sa iyang palibot. Busa misakay siya sa sakayan nga nagpundo didto ug milingkod. Ug ang mga tawo nagpabilin sa daplin sa linaw. Daghan ang iyang gitudlo kanila pinaagi sa mga sambingay. Miingon siya, “Pamati kamo! May usa ka mag-uuma nga nagsabwag ug binhi. Nasabwag ang uban nga binhi sa daplin sa dalan, ug gituka kini sa mga langgam. Ang uban nasabwag sa kabatoan. May gamay nga yuta didto, busa dali ra nga miturok ang binhi. Apan nalawos kini sa dihang nainitan sa adlaw, ug namatay ra dayon tungod kay wala kini makagamot. Ang uban nga binhi nasabwag ug mitubo sa yuta nga may tunokon nga mga sagbot, apan sa paglabong sa mga sagbot natabonan kini, busa wala makapamunga. Ang uban usab nga binhi nasabwag sa maayo nga yuta, ug kini mitubo ug namunga. Ang uban igo-igo lang ang bunga, ang uban daghan, ug ang uban daghan kaayo.[a] Miingon pa gayod si Jesus kanila, “Kamo nga nagapaminaw, kinahanglan sabton gayod ninyo kining inyong nadungog.”

Ang Katuyoan sa mga Sambingay

10 Pagpamauli sa mga tawo, ang dose ka apostoles ug ang uban pa nga nagauban kang Jesus nangutana kaniya kon unsa ang kahulogan niadtong sambingay. 11 Miingon si Jesus kanila, “Ang mga tinago mahitungod sa paghari sa Dios gisulti kaninyo sa klaro, apan sa uban nga mga tawo ang tanan nga butang mahitungod sa paghari sa Dios gisulti pinaagi sa mga sambingay, 12 aron matuman ang gi-ingon sa kasulatan nga,

‘Magpadayon ang ilang pagtan-aw apan dili sila makakita,
ug magpadayon usab ang ilang pagpaminaw apan dili usab sila makasabot,
kay kon makasabot sila, maghinulsol sila ug pasayloon sila sa Dios.’ ”[b]

Gisaysay ni Jesus ang Sambingay bahin sa Tigsabwag

(Mat. 13:18-23; Luc. 8:11-15)

13 Unya nangutana si Jesus kanila, “Wala ba diay kamo makasabot niadto nga sambingay? Kon mao kana, unsaon ninyo pagkasabot sa uban pa nakong mga sambingay? 14 Ang kahulogan sa akong sambingay mao kini: ang gisabwag sa mag-uuma mao ang pulong sa Dios. 15 Ang mga binhi nga nasabwag sa dalan mao ang pulong sa Dios nga nadunggan sa mga tawo, apan miabot usab dayon si Satanas ug giilog niya ang pulong sa Dios nga gisabwag diha sa ilang mga kasingkasing. 16 Ang mga binhi nga nasabwag sa kabatoan nga gamay lang ug yuta mao ang pulong sa Dios nga nadunggan sa mga tawo ug diha-diha gidawat nila nga malipayon. 17 Apan kini dili kinasingkasing, busa wala molungtad ang ilang pagtuo. Sa pag-abot sa kalisod o paglutos tungod sa ilang pagdawat sa pulong sa Dios mibiya sila sa ilang pagtuo. 18 Ang mga binhi nga nasabwag didto sa mga sagbot nga tunokon mao ang pulong sa Dios nga nadunggan sa mga tawo, 19 apan tungod sa mga kabalaka sa panginabuhi ug pagpaningkamot nga makaangkon ug bahandi, ug tungod sa sobra nga pagtinguha sa uban pa nga mga kabtangan, nalimtan nila ang pulong sa Dios nga ilang nadunggan ug wala kini namunga sa ilang kinabuhi. 20 Apan ang mga binhi nga nasabwag sa maayo nga yuta mao ang pulong sa Dios nga nadungog sa mga tawo ug gidawat nila sa kinasingkasing ug namunga sa ilang kinabuhi. Ang uban igo-igo lang ang bunga, ang uban daghan, ug ang uban daghan kaayo.[c]

Ang Sambingay bahin sa Suga

(Luc. 8:16-18)

21 Human niadto mipadayon sa pagsulti si Jesus kanila, “Kon ang tawo magdagkot ug suga, dili niya kini takloban ug gantangan o kaha ibutang sa ilalom sa katre, kondili ibutang hinuon niya kini sa tungtonganan. 22 Mao kana nga wala gayoy tinago nga dili mogawas sa kaulahian, ug walay tinagoan mahitungod sa paghari sa Dios nga dili mabutyag. 23 Kamo nga nagapaminaw, kinahanglan sabton gayod ninyo kining inyong nadungog.” 24 Miingon pa gayod siya, “Paminaw kamo pag-ayo kanako. Mohatag ang Dios kaninyo ug pagsabot sumala sa inyong pagpaminaw, ug iya pa gani kining dugangan. 25 Kay ang tawo nga may pagsabot sa kamatuoran hatagan pa gayod. Apan ang tawo nga walay pagsabot sa kamatuoran, bisan ang gamay nga iyang nasabtan kuhaon pa kaniya.”

Ang Sambingay bahin sa Binhi nga Nagtubo

26 Miingon pa gayod si Jesus, “Ang paghari sa Dios sama sa tawo nga nagsabwag ug binhi diha sa iyang uma. 27 Samtang nagpadayon siya sa iyang buluhaton matag adlaw ug sa iyang pagkatulog matag gabii, ang mga binhi nga iyang gisabwag nagatubo bisan wala niya mahibaloi kon sa unsang pamaagi. 28 Ang yuta mao ang mopatubo ug mopabunga sa mga tanom: una ang dahon, sunod ang uhay, ug ang ulahi ang timgas nga bunga. 29 Ug kon hinog na, anihon sa tag-iya kay anihonon na man.”

Ang Sambingay bahin sa Binhi sa Mustasa

(Mat. 13:31-32, 34; Luc. 13:18-19)

30 Nangutana si Jesus kanila, “Sa unsa nato ikatandi ang paghari sa Dios? Unsa nga sambingay ang atong gamiton aron nga masaysay kini?” Miingon siya, 31 “Sama kini sa binhi sa mustasa.[d] Labing gamay kini sa tanan nga binhi, 32 apan kon matanom na, motubo ug molabaw pa sa tanang mga utanon nga bisan ang mga langgam makahimo sa pagsalag diha sa iyang labong nga mga sanga.”

33 Daghan pa nga mga sambingay nga sama niini ang gigamit ni Jesus sa iyang pagpanudlo sa mga tawo, sumala lang sa ilang masabtan. 34 Wala siya mosulti sa mga tawo nga dili pinaagi sa sambingay, apan gipasabot niya kining tanan sa iyang mga tinun-an kon sila na lang.

Gipahunong ni Jesus ang Bagyo

(Mat. 8:23-27; Luc. 8:22-25)

35 Sa pagkagabii na, miingon si Jesus sa iyang mga tinun-an, “Dali, motabok kita.” 36 Busa gibiyaan sa iyang mga tinun-an ang daghang mga tawo nga nagtigom, ug misakay sila didto sa sakayan nga gisakyan ni Jesus. May mga sakayan usab didto nga midungan kanila. 37 Ug sa nagalawig na sila, kalit lang mihuros ang kusog nga hangin. Sige ang hapak sa dagkong mga balod, ug hapit na mapuno sa tubig ang sakayan. 38 Apan si Jesus didto sa ulin[e] sa sakayan natulog nga nagaunlan. Gipukaw nila siya. Miingon sila, “Magtutudlo, wala ka ba mabalaka nga malunod na kita?” 39 Busa mibangon siya ug gimandoan niya ang hangin ug ang mga balod, “Hunong!” Ug mihunong ang hangin ug milinaw ang dagat. 40 Ug miingon si Jesus kanila, “Nganong nangahadlok man kamo? Wala pa ba kamoy pagtuo kanako?” 41 Nahadlok gayod sila pag-ayo ug miingon sa usag usa, “Kinsa gayod kaha kining tawhana, nga bisan ang hangin ug ang mga balod motuman man kaniya?”
