1-3 On another occasion when he went into the synagogue, there was a man there whose hand was shrivelled, and they were watching Jesus closely to see whether he would heal him on the Sabbath day, so that they might bring a charge against him. Jesus said to the man with the shrivelled hand, “Stand up and come out here in front!”

Then he said to them, “Is it right to do good on the Sabbath day, or to do harm? Is it right to save life or to kill?”

5-6 There was a dead silence. Then Jesus, deeply hurt as he sensed their inhumanity, looked round in anger at the faces surrounding him, and said to the man, “Stretch out your hand!” And he stretched it out, and the hand was restored as sound as the other one. The Pharisees walked straight out and discussed with Herod’s party how they could have Jesus put out of the way.

Jesus’ enormous popularity

7-11 Jesus now retired to the lake-side with his disciples. A huge crowd of people followed him, not only from Galilee, but from Judea, Jerusalem and Idumea, some from the district beyond the Jordan and from the neighbourhood of Tyre and Sidon. This vast crowd came to him because they had heard about the sort of things he was doing. So Jesus told his disciples to have a small boat kept in readiness for him, in case the people should crowd him too closely. For he healed so many people that all those who were in pain kept pressing forward to touch him with their hands. Evil spirits, as soon as they saw him, acknowledged his authority and screamed, “You are the Son of God!”

12 But he warned them repeatedly that they must not make him known.

Jesus chooses the twelve apostles

13-19 Later he went up on to the hill-side and summoned the men whom he wanted, and they went up to him. He appointed a band of twelve to be his companions, whom he could send out to preach, with power to drive out evil spirits. These were the twelve he appointed: Peter (which was the new name he gave Simon), James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother (He gave them the name of Boanerges, which means the “Thunderers”.) Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Patriot, and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.

Jesus exposes an absurd accusation

20-21 Then he went indoors, but again such a crowd collected that it was impossible for them even to eat a meal. When his relatives heard of this, they set out to take charge of him, for people were saying, “He must be mad!”

22-27 The scribes who had come down from Jerusalem were saying that he was possessed by Beelzebub, and that he drove out devils because he was in league with the prince of devils. So Jesus called them to him and spoke to them in a parable—“How can Satan be the one who drives out Satan? If a kingdom is divided against itself, it cannot last either. And if Satan leads a rebellion against Satan—his days are certainly numbered. No one can break into a strong man’s house and steal his property, without first tying up the strong man hand and foot. But if he did that, he could ransack the whole house.

28-29 “Believe me, all men’s sins can be forgiven and their blasphemies. But there can never be any forgiveness for blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. That is an eternal sin.”

30 He said this because they were saying, “He is in the power of an evil spirit.”

The new relationships in the kingdom

31-32 Then his mother and his brothers arrived. They stood outside the house and sent a message asking him to come out to them. There was a crowd sitting round him when the message was brought telling him, “Your mother and your brothers are outside looking for you.”

33 Jesus replied, “And who are really my mother and my brothers?”

34 And he looked round at the faces of those sitting in a circle about him.

35 “Look!” he said, “my mother and my brothers are here. Anyone who does the will of God is brother and sister and mother to me.”

治好手枯的人

群眾跟隨耶穌

耶穌和門徒退到湖邊,有一大群人從加利利來跟隨祂。 還有很多人聽見耶穌所做的一切,就從猶太、耶路撒冷、以土買、約旦河東,甚至泰爾和西頓一帶來找祂。 耶穌見人多,就吩咐門徒為祂預備一條小船,以免人群擁擠祂。 10 因為祂醫好了很多人,凡有疾病的人都想擠過來摸祂。 11 每當污鬼看見祂,就俯伏在祂面前,大喊:「你是上帝的兒子!」 12 耶穌卻嚴厲地吩咐牠們不要洩露祂的身分。

選立十二使徒

13 耶穌上了山,把合自己心意的人召集到跟前, 14 從中選出十二個人,設立他們為使徒,讓他們跟隨自己,並且差遣他們出去傳道, 15 賜他們趕鬼的權柄。

16 這十二位使徒是:西門——耶穌給他取名叫彼得、 17 西庇太的兒子雅各和雅各的兄弟約翰——耶穌給他們取名叫「半尼其」,就是「雷霆之子」的意思、 18 安得烈、腓力、巴多羅買、馬太、多馬、亞勒腓的兒子雅各、達太、激進黨人西門、 19 及後來出賣耶穌的加略人猶大。

耶穌和別西卜

20 耶穌剛進家門,人群又聚集起來,以致祂和門徒連吃飯的時間也沒有。 21 祂的親屬聽見這個消息,就出來要拉住祂,因為人們說祂瘋了。

22 從耶路撒冷下來的律法教師說:「祂被別西卜附體。」又說:「祂是靠鬼王趕鬼。」

23 耶穌叫他們來,用比喻對他們說:「撒旦怎能驅逐撒旦呢? 24 一個國內部自相紛爭,必然崩潰。 25 一個家內部自相紛爭,必然破裂。 26 同樣,撒旦如果與自己為敵,自相紛爭,就站立不住,必然滅亡。 27 沒有人能進入壯漢家裡搶奪他的財物,除非先把那壯漢捆綁起來,才有可能搶劫他的家。

28 「我實在告訴你們,世人一切的罪和褻瀆的話都可以得到赦免, 29 唯有褻瀆聖靈的人永遠得不到赦免,他們要永遠擔罪。」 30 耶穌這樣說是因為他們誣衊祂被污鬼附身。

誰是耶穌的親人

31 這時候,耶穌的母親和兄弟來了,他們站在外面,託人叫耶穌。 32 有許多人圍坐在耶穌身邊,他們告訴祂說:「看啊!你的母親和兄弟在外面找你。」

33 耶穌說:「誰是我的母親?誰是我的弟兄?」 34 然後祂望著周圍坐著的人說:「看啊!我的母親、我的弟兄在這裡。 35 凡遵行上帝旨意的人就是我的弟兄、姊妹和母親。」

Jesus Heals on the Sabbath

Another time Jesus went into the synagogue,(A) and a man with a shriveled hand was there. Some of them were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely(B) to see if he would heal him on the Sabbath.(C) Jesus said to the man with the shriveled hand, “Stand up in front of everyone.”

Then Jesus asked them, “Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?” But they remained silent.

He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored. Then the Pharisees went out and began to plot with the Herodians(D) how they might kill Jesus.(E)

Crowds Follow Jesus(F)

Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the lake, and a large crowd from Galilee followed.(G) When they heard about all he was doing, many people came to him from Judea, Jerusalem, Idumea, and the regions across the Jordan and around Tyre and Sidon.(H) Because of the crowd he told his disciples to have a small boat ready for him, to keep the people from crowding him. 10 For he had healed many,(I) so that those with diseases were pushing forward to touch him.(J) 11 Whenever the impure spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, “You are the Son of God.”(K) 12 But he gave them strict orders not to tell others about him.(L)

Jesus Appoints the Twelve(M)

13 Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to him those he wanted, and they came to him.(N) 14 He appointed twelve[a](O) that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach 15 and to have authority to drive out demons.(P) 16 These are the twelve he appointed: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter),(Q) 17 James son of Zebedee and his brother John (to them he gave the name Boanerges, which means “sons of thunder”), 18 Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot 19 and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.

Jesus Accused by His Family and by Teachers of the Law(R)(S)

20 Then Jesus entered a house, and again a crowd gathered,(T) so that he and his disciples were not even able to eat.(U) 21 When his family[b] heard about this, they went to take charge of him, for they said, “He is out of his mind.”(V)

22 And the teachers of the law who came down from Jerusalem(W) said, “He is possessed by Beelzebul!(X) By the prince of demons he is driving out demons.”(Y)

23 So Jesus called them over to him and began to speak to them in parables:(Z) “How can Satan(AA) drive out Satan? 24 If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25 If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand. 26 And if Satan opposes himself and is divided, he cannot stand; his end has come. 27 In fact, no one can enter a strong man’s house without first tying him up. Then he can plunder the strong man’s house.(AB) 28 Truly I tell you, people can be forgiven all their sins and every slander they utter, 29 but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; they are guilty of an eternal sin.”(AC)

30 He said this because they were saying, “He has an impure spirit.”

31 Then Jesus’ mother and brothers arrived.(AD) Standing outside, they sent someone in to call him. 32 A crowd was sitting around him, and they told him, “Your mother and brothers are outside looking for you.”

33 “Who are my mother and my brothers?” he asked.

34 Then he looked at those seated in a circle around him and said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! 35 Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.”
