¹¹ Whenever the impure spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, “You are the Son of God.”^(A)

²⁸ When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell at his feet, shouting at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me,^(A) Jesus, Son of the Most High God?^(B) I beg you, don’t torture me!”

⁴¹ Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, “You are the Son of God!”^(A) But he rebuked^(B) them and would not allow them to speak,^(C) because they knew he was the Messiah.

²³ Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an impure spirit cried out, ²⁴ “What do you want with us,^(A) Jesus of Nazareth?^(B) Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”^(C)

²⁹ “What do you want with us,^(A) Son of God?” they shouted. “Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?”^(B)

³ The tempter^(A) came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God,^(B) tell these stones to become bread.”

¹⁹ You believe that there is one God.^(A) Good! Even the demons believe that^(B)—and shudder.

¹⁷ She followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, “These men are servants of the Most High God,^(A) who are telling you the way to be saved.”

¹³ Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits^(A) tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed. They would say, “In the name of the Jesus^(B) whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out.” ¹⁴ Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this. ¹⁵ One day the evil spirit answered them, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?” ¹⁶ Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding.

¹⁷ When this became known to the Jews and Greeks living in Ephesus,^(C) they were all seized with fear,^(D) and the name of the Lord Jesus was held in high honor.

³¹ The demons begged Jesus, “If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs.”
