²⁴ The Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”^(A)

²⁵ He answered, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need? ²⁶ In the days of Abiathar the high priest,^(B) he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which is lawful only for priests to eat.^(C) And he also gave some to his companions.”^(D)

²⁷ Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man,^(E) not man for the Sabbath.^{(F) 28} So the Son of Man^(G) is Lord even of the Sabbath.”

⁴⁵ For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve,^(A) and to give his life as a ransom for many.”^(B)

²⁷ And he has given him authority to judge^(A) because he is the Son of Man.

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial^(A)

³¹ When he was gone, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man^(B) is glorified^(C) and God is glorified in him.^(D)

⁵⁶ “Look,” he said, “I see heaven open^(A) and the Son of Man^(B) standing at the right hand of God.”

⁵ For there is one God^(A) and one mediator^(B) between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus,^(C)

⁹ But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor^(A) because he suffered death,^(B) so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.^(C)

¹⁰ In bringing many sons and daughters to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists,^(D) should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through what he suffered.^(E)

¹⁴ Since the children have flesh and blood,^(A) he too shared in their humanity^(B) so that by his death he might break the power^(C) of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil^(D)— ¹⁵ and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear^(E) of death. ¹⁶ For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham’s descendants.^{(F) 17} For this reason he had to be made like them,^[a](G) fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful^(H) and faithful high priest^(I) in service to God,^(J) and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.^{(K) 18} Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.^(L)
