¹⁶ And when the scribes ^[a]and Pharisees saw Him eating with the tax collectors and sinners, they said to His disciples, “How is it that He eats and drinks with tax collectors and sinners?”

^10 (A)for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

¹¹ The Pharisee ^(A)stood and prayed thus with himself, ^(B)‘God, I thank You that I am not like other men—extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector.

¹⁵ But he who is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is rightly judged by no one.

⁹ Then there arose a loud outcry. And the scribes of the Pharisees’ party arose and protested, saying, ^(A)“We find no evil in this man; ^[a]but ^(B)if a spirit or an angel has spoken to him, ^(C)let us not fight against God.”

⁷ But when they saw it, they all ^[a]complained, saying, ^(A)“He has gone to be a guest with a man who is a sinner.”

The Discipline of God^(A)

^3 (B)For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, ^(C)lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls.

² And the Pharisees and scribes complained, saying, “This Man ^[a]receives sinners ^(A)and eats with them.” ³ So He spoke this parable to them, saying:

^4 (B)“What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one which is lost until he finds it? ⁵ And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. ⁶ And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, ^(C)‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep ^(D)which was lost!’ ⁷ I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents ^(E)than over ninety-nine ^[b]just persons who ^(F)need no repentance.
