Jesus Appears to Two Disciples

^12 (A)After these things ^(B)he appeared in ^(C)another form to two of them, as they were walking into the country. ^13 (D)And they went back and told the rest, but they did not believe them.

The Great Commission

¹⁴ Afterward ^(E)he appeared ^(F)to the eleven themselves as they were reclining at table, and he rebuked them for their ^(G)unbelief and ^(H)hardness of heart, because ^(I)they had not believed those who saw him after he had risen.

On the Road to Emmaus

¹³ That very day ^(A)two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles^[a] from Jerusalem, ¹⁴ and they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened. ¹⁵ While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them. ^16 (B)But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. ¹⁷ And he said to them, “What is this conversation that you are holding with each other as you walk?” And they stood still, looking sad. ¹⁸ Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?” ¹⁹ And he said to them, “What things?” And they said to him, “Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was ^(C)a prophet ^(D)mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, ²⁰ and ^(E)how our chief priests and ^(F)rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him. ²¹ But we had hoped that he was ^(G)the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now ^(H)the third day since these things happened. ²² Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. ^(I)They were at the tomb early in the morning, ²³ and ^(J)when they did not find his body, they came back saying that ^(K)they had even seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive. ^24 (L)Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see.” ²⁵ And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! ^26 (M)Was it not necessary that ^(N)the Christ should suffer these things and enter into ^(O)his glory?” ²⁷ And ^(P)beginning with ^(Q)Moses and ^(R)all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.

²⁸ So they drew near to the village to which they were going. ^(S)He acted as if he were going farther, ²⁹ but they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, for it is toward evening and ^(T)the day is now far spent.” So he went in to stay with them. ³⁰ When he was at table with them, he took the bread and ^(U)blessed and broke it and gave it to them. ^31 (V)And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And ^(W)he vanished from their sight. ³² They said to each other, ^(X)“Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he ^(Y)opened to us the Scriptures?” ³³ And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem. And they ^(Z)found the eleven and ^(AA)those who were with them gathered together, ³⁴ saying, “The Lord has risen indeed, and ^(AB)has appeared to Simon!” ³⁵ Then they told what had happened on the road, and ^(AC)how he was known to them in ^(AD)the breaking of the bread.

Jesus Appears to His Disciples

³⁶ As they were talking about these things, ^(AE)Jesus himself stood among them, and said to them, “Peace to you!” ³⁷ But they were ^(AF)startled and ^(AG)frightened and ^(AH)thought they saw a spirit. ³⁸ And he said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? ³⁹ See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. ^(AI)Touch me, and see. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” ⁴⁰ And when he had said this, ^(AJ)he showed them his hands and his feet. ⁴¹ And while they still disbelieved ^(AK)for joy and were marveling, ^(AL)he said to them, “Have you anything here to eat?” ⁴² They gave him a piece of broiled fish,^{[b] 43} and he took it and ate before them.

Jesus Appears to the Disciples

^19 (A)On the evening ^(B)of that day, the first day of the week, ^(C)the doors being locked where the disciples were ^(D)for fear of the Jews,^[a] Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, ^(E)“Peace be with you.” ²⁰ When he had said this, ^(F)he showed them his hands and his side. Then ^(G)the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. ²¹ Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As ^(H)the Father has sent me, ^(I)even so I am sending you.” ²² And when he had said this, he ^(J)breathed on them and said to them, ^(K)“Receive the Holy Spirit. ^23 (L)If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.”

Jesus and Thomas

²⁴ Now ^(M)Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin,^[b] was not with them when Jesus came. ²⁵ So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, ^(N)“Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.”

²⁶ Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. ^(O)Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ^(P)“Peace be with you.” ²⁷ Then he said to Thomas, ^(Q)“Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” ²⁸ Thomas answered him, ^(R)“My Lord and my God!” ²⁹ Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? ^(S)Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

The Purpose of This Book

^30 (T)Now Jesus did many other signs ^(U)in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; ^31 (V)but these are written so that you may ^(W)believe that Jesus is the Christ, ^(X)the Son of God, and that by believing ^(Y)you may have life ^(Z)in his name.

Jesus Appears to Seven Disciples

21 After this Jesus ^(AA)revealed himself ^(AB)again to the disciples by ^(AC)the Sea of Tiberias, and he revealed himself in this way. ² Simon Peter, ^(AD)Thomas (called the Twin), Nathanael of ^(AE)Cana in Galilee, ^(AF)the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples were together. ³ Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We will go with you.” They went out and got into the boat, but ^(AG)that night they caught nothing.

⁴ Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples ^(AH)did not know that it was Jesus. ^5 (AI)Jesus said to them, “Children, do you have any fish?” They answered him, “No.” ^6 (AJ)He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in, because of the quantity of fish. ⁷ That disciple ^(AK)whom Jesus loved therefore said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, ^(AL)he put on his outer garment, for he was ^(AM)stripped for work, and ^(AN)threw himself into the sea. ⁸ The other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, but about a hundred yards^[c] off.

⁹ When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire in place, with fish laid out on it, and bread. ¹⁰ Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.” ¹¹ So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, 153 of them. And although there were so many, the net was not torn. ¹² Jesus said to them, ^(AO)“Come and ^(AP)have breakfast.” Now ^(AQ)none of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. ¹³ Jesus came and ^(AR)took the bread and gave it to them, and so with the fish. ^14 (AS)This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.

Jesus and Peter

¹⁵ When they had ^(AT)finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, ^(AU)“Simon, ^(AV)son of John, ^(AW)do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed ^(AX)my lambs.” ¹⁶ He said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, ^(AY)“Tend ^(AZ)my sheep.” ¹⁷ He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him ^(BA)the third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, ^(BB)you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed ^(BC)my sheep. ^18 (BD)Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, ^(BE)you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go.” ¹⁹ (This he said to show ^(BF)by what kind of death he was to glorify God.) And after saying this he said to him, ^(BG)“Follow me.”

Jesus and the Beloved Apostle

²⁰ Peter turned and saw ^(BH)the disciple whom Jesus loved following them, ^(BI)the one who also had leaned back against him during the supper and had said, “Lord, who is it that is going to betray you?” ²¹ When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, “Lord, what about this man?” ²² Jesus said to him, “If it is my will that he remain ^(BJ)until ^(BK)I come, what is that to you? ^(BL)You follow me!” ²³ So the saying spread abroad among ^(BM)the brothers^[d] that this disciple was not to die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he was not to die, but, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you?”

²⁴ This is the disciple ^(BN)who is bearing witness about these things, and who has written these things, and ^(BO)we know ^(BP)that his testimony is true.

²⁵ Now ^(BQ)there are also many other things that Jesus did. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that ^(BR)the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.
